ANTRIM IS MY STEPFATHER'S NAME: The Boyhood of Billy the Kid (Historical Monograph # 9) [SIGNED BY AUTHOR]
by Jerry Weddle. Foreword by Robert Utley. B&W era photos illustrate. Condition: FLAT SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Good-Good+, 1993 Arizona Historical Society soft cover, second printing. The book may look and feel new, but it was my research book and I have highlighted text & put checkmarks in the margins. Content: This is one of the best BTK books in publication, IMHO. This thoroughly researched work offers a new—and refreshingly realistic—look at the famous outlaw. Having combed interviews, memoirs, and primary documents, Weddle examines the family and community that produced Billy. He also debunks a number of misconceptions and falsehoods. Billy's childhood buddies in Silver City, New Mexico, remembered a smart, ambitious youth with a strong, loving mother and a distant stepfather. Acquaintances at Camp Grant, Arizona Territory, knew a resourceful teenager versed in the lawless ways of frontier survival. Both perspectives add up to a vivid and very human story. Previously unpublished photographs round out this volume. "Jerry Weddle, master researcher and consummate grassroots historian, has made a major contribution to Billy the Kid scholarship. This book is must reading for anyone interested in the historical Billy."—Professor Paul Andrew Hutton, Executive Director, The Western History Association Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

BILLY THE KID: The Good Side of a Bad Man
by Lee Priestley with Marquita Peterson. About a dozen wonderful B&W drawings by Peterson. Condition: UNREAD 1993 Yucca Tree Press Trade Paperback, revised printing. Content: This may be the last unexamined aspect of the life and legend of Billy the Kid. Author Priestley and artist Peterson believe they have discovered why Billy the Kid is still remembered and celebrated more than one hundred years after his death. Priestley skillfully weaves the story from the letters and tattered memories of those who know the legend best. She spent a lifetime talking with old-timers and corresponding with the Kid's friends (and enemies). Interesting and worth the read. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

BILLY THE KID: His Life and Legend
by Jon Tuska. Most likely there are illustrations. Condition: NEW (still shrink-wrapped) 1997 Univ. of New Mexico Press Trade Paperback. Since the book is still wrapped, I have no idea of the printing number nor illustrations. Content: This book is a tour de force of western scholarship, a carefully documented biography complete with bibliographical essays on historical scholarship, fiction, films, culture criticism, and a complete chronology of William Bonnie's life and death. Jon Tuska's careful scholarship and analysis of sources refutes the mythical embellishments that have surrounded Billy the Kid. He concludes that in order for such a legend to arise, it is necessary for a historical character to have qualities that permit ambiguous interpretations of his behavior. Billy The Kid is the definitive work on a legend of the American West by a gifted, painstaking scholar of western culture. Reviewer: "But the best aspect of the book for historians and perhaps for Tuska's future books on Billy the Kid is his determination that to get the true story of what happened during the Lincoln County War, researchers need to focus more on the actions of Alexander A. McSween and Susan Hammer McSween and answering questions like, what happened to the Fritz inheritance money? What happened to John H. Turnstall's numerous high investments? Tuska's work suggests Susan McSween's financial success might have come from extortion from the Fritz and Turnstall estate. Tuska's theories ring true, and make the reader want more. From his suggestions, the reader almost anticipates another book from Tuska exploring these issues. Readers should follow Tuska's career and future writings about Billy the Kid." Questions welcome. A FITTING DEATH FOR BILLY THE KID
by Ramon F. Adams. A few B&W era photos. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1981 University of Oklahoma Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing of the 1960 first edition. Rubbings along (with a small "cut") front cover flap crease with 2-3 small rubbings back DJ cover. Content: When Adams first published this book, he inaugurated a new genre in the literature of the American West: he set out to write not so much a biography as a commentary on a myth, sifting legend and tall tale and outright lie to arrive a the truth about the seemingly immortal Billy. Adams, a noted critic of western writing (see Burs Under The Saddle) and bibliographer of books on the West, succeeded so well that in the intervening years not one fact about Billy that he established has been disproved, and not one "reasonable conclusion" has been discarded - though alas the myths continue to flourish in some media. What outraged Adams was that no lawless character of the early West had had so much information passed around about him or had his posthumous reputation so dishonestly embellished as William H. Bonney (and other aliases). Adams placed the Kid squarely in the sights of his literary revolver and blasted away at the fantastic stories told about him under the guise of fact. When we know the truth about Billy's end, we tend to agree that it was, indeed, a fitting death. MY GIRLHOOD AMONG OULAWS
by Lily Klasner. Edited by Eve Ball. B&W era photos illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-used (by me) 1988 Univ. of Arizona Press Trade Paperback, fourth printing. Small "ding" bottom front cover at spine with light edge wear. This was my book when I was doing research on BTK and many pages have check marks in the margins. No spine crease. Content: Born in Texas in 1862, Lily Klasner assumed leadership of her family at the age of 13, after her father was murdered. In this memoir, Lily recalls her experiences with Billy the Kid and other desperados--who often stopped over at the Klasner ranch in Pecos--and sets the record straight on a number of popular misrepresented events concerning them. Reviewer: "I found this book to be very informative, not so much as accurate history, but as a history of what life was like in Lincoln County in the late 19th Century and early 20th. Very insightful in terms of how people made a living and how they dealt with the everyday lawlessness and violence of that era. I'd recommend it highly to those who want not just to know the facts of that period, but how it felt personally to live through it. Very good insights into the Chisum family and events surrounding the Lincoln Country war and all the players, including Billy the Kid." MYSTERIES & MIRACLES OF NEW MEXICO: Guide Book to the Genuinely Bizarre in the Land of Enchantment
by Jack Kutz. Cover art and interior B&W illustrations by Mary Schold Robert. Condition: UNREAD 1990 Rhombus (Corrales) Trade Paperback, second printing. Very light edge wear with a very strange, pale "lighter-than-black" sport on the back cover - tag removal mark? Interior perfect. Content: Reviewer: "This is a terrific little book on some of the more bizarre people, places, occurrences in New Mexico. Of course there is a chapter devoted to Roswell (actually there are 3 UFO related chapters including the chapter on cattle mutilations). Then there are the stories about stashed gold and money, Native American women warriors, mystery inscriptions on rocks, spirit world windows (worthy of Keel himself), New Mexican witches, and the mystery surrounding Billy the Kid. It's a smallish book (217 pages) and would be highly suited for an "in-flight" read the next time you fly the friendly skies. It definitely makes you want to visit all the places mentioned within the book. Every one of its chapters addresses a specific topic or story, and at the end of every chapter the book gives directions to whatever it was talking about, and also recommends other sources for further reading on the same subject. THE SAGA OF BILLY THE KID [Legends of the West series]
by Walter Noble Burns. 1 B&W photo of The Kid. Condition: UNREAD 1992 Longmeadow Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), reissue of the 1926 edition. Light tanning to page edges. Content: John Chisum was one of the most important figures in the life of William Bonney, aka Henry Bonney, aka Billy the Kid. In this book, we learn more about John Chisum than had ever before been written and how he influenced Billy the Kid. We travel through the old west and fight with Billy in the Lincoln County War between the cattle barons. Later, Billy refused to honor the truce negotiated by Governor Wallace and kills Sheriff Pat Garrett. This is a great book on the old west and one of the most famous outlaws of all time. [While I believe much of this book is "fantasy," there is a very interesting section on Paulita Maxwell Jaramilla - who Burns believes had BTK's child - all of which was (and still is, if true) kept secret. Many authors have used Burns' account of BTK as either a foundation for truth or as a straw man. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SHERIFF WILLIAM BRADY: Tragic Hero of the Lincoln County War
by Donald R. Lavash. Excellent selection of B&W era photos and maps. Condition: UNREAD 1986 Sunstone Press (Santa Fe) Trade Paperback, first edition, no printing given. Pale diagonal crease bottom back cover corner. Content: Was Sheriff William Brady a willing pawn in the hands of a crooked political faction or was he an honest man dedicated to law and order? After his extensive research, Donald R. Lavash thinks Brady deserves a more realistic evaluation of his part in the Lincoln County Was in New Mexico. In 1873, crime and violence were rampant in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Land fraud, cattle and horse stealing were common. Outlaws, including Billy the Kid, swarmed in to join hands with dishonest citizens. Although Brady tried to stem the growing tide of anarchy, his efforts ended when he was ambushed by Billy the Kid and his gang. This book is not only a biography of a man but the history of an era in the American Southwest. Reviewer, Jim Hammond: "Since I'm engaged in research for a planned novel, I wanted to read every side in the Lincoln County War, and there the book did not disappoint. The background on Brady including County Cavan, Ireland was particularly useful. However I have to take issue with some of the authors conclusions. His characterization of both Tunstall and McSween goes contrary to most historians, and his proof, if it could be called that, is tainted. The conflict over Emil Fritz's estate, was the pretext the Murphy-Dolan-Riley contingent used to "legally" put McSween and their ultimate target, Tunstall, in harm's way. Granted, Sheriff Brady's assassination was brutal and cowardly, but it was not Tunstall-McSween's actions that put him in Billy the Kid's guunsight, put his unfailing support for the corrupt Murphy-Dolan-Rilay gang that sealed his doom. Nonetheless, it is a good read, heavily researched, and provides a different viewpoint of the troubles of Lincoln County. Recommended with reservations." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SUCH MEN AS BILLY THE KID: The Lincoln County War Reconsidered
by Joel Jacobsen. B&W era photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1994 Univ. of Nebraska Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Content: The Lincoln County War was a tawdry little conflict between competing economic and political factions in New Mexico during the 1870s. The war entered American mythology primarily due to the exploits (real or imagined) of Henry McCarty, also known as William Antrim or Billy Bonney--or, of course, Billy the Kid. Jacobsen, an assistant attorney general in New Mexico, lays out his case much like a legal brief. Evidence is examined in a meticulous manner, and he builds from specific events to general conclusions. While his analysis of the key players and their actions is rational and often interesting, those seeking a romantic perspective or higher truths will be sorely disappointed. Still, some of the lesser-known characters emerge as rather striking figures, particularly Alexander McSween, an attorney and a key leader of the faction opposing the entrenched political interests in Lincoln County. Despite the title, Billy the Kid is given short shrift here, since Jacobsen feels he was actually a rather minor player in the events, despite the efforts of dime novelists. Jacobsen's work doesn't enthrall or inspire, but he has provided a solid work of historical research and an interesting perspective on a piece of Americana. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

A TEXAS COW BOY OR FIFTEEN YEARS ON THE HURRICANE DECK OF A SPANISH PONY: Taken From Real Life (Classics of the Old West series)
by Chas. A. Siringo. A few B&W drawings illustrate, but no credit given. Condition: UNREAD 1980 Time Life hardcover (padded boards - no DJ issued), no printing given. Part of the Classics of the Old West series. There is a gold embossed "Library of" sticker inside front cover as well as an original book plate. Gilt edges. Ribbon marker. It appears to be a facsimile edition. Content: Charles A. Siringo (1855-1928) was born in Matagorda County, Texas. His books include Lone Star Cowboy, History of "Billy the Kid," and Riata and Spurs. He worked as a film advisor and died in Hollywood in 1928. After a nomadic childhood, Charles Siringo signed on as a teenage cowboy for the noted Texas cattle king, Shanghai Pierce, and began a life that embraced all the hard work, excitement, and adventure readers today associate with the cowboy era. He "rid the Chisholm trail," driving 2,500 heads of cattle from Austin to Kansas; knew Tascosa--now a historic monument--when it was home to raucous saloons, red light districts, and a fair share of violence; and led a posse of cowboys in pursuit of Billy the Kid and his gang. First published in 1885, Siringo's chronicle of his life as a itchy-footed boy, cowhand, range detective, and adventurer was one the first classics about the Old West and helped to romanticize the West and its myth of the American cowboy. Will Rogers declared, "That was the Cowboy's Bible when I was growing up." The most interesting part, IMHO, is the description of the capture of Billy the Kid - he was there and his description of events does not entirely back up Garrett's claims. A Western classic. by Philip J. Rasch. Intro by Robert Utley. Edited by Robert K. DeArment. Cover painting by Gary Zaboly. Content: This is a collection of Rasch articles on the participants in the Lincoln County War - including many of the "minor" players. Notes follow each "article" and there is a detailed Index. Rasch published his large amount of articles in what many people consider "obscure" periodicals and DeArment researched all of the old journals for Rasch's work, placing them into this book.
