BARD: The Odyssey of the Irish (Historical Fiction/Fantasy)
by Morgan Llywelyn. Cover art by Don Maitz. Condition: Gently pre-read 1987 TOR paperback, second printing. Small edgewear and very pale spine crease. Interior clean & tight. Content: Reviewer: "This is what a novel based on Celtic legends should look like. Llywelyn certainly knows how to write, but where she goes above and beyond the call of duty is her willingness to extensively research scholarly and oftentimes dry sources. Likely, she heard the legends of Ireland's past growing up, yet she nevertheless presents extensive bibliographies at the end of her novels. Bard is no exception. While artistic license is taken in order to draw the modern reader into the tale, it is clear that Llywelyn knows what she is doing, breathing new life into the people of Ireland's mythological tradition while remaining faithful to the source. An exciting retelling of the events of The Book of Invasions." [1 copy available]

BORN OF THE SUN (Historical Fiction)
by Joan Wolf. Condition: UNREAD 1989 New American Library hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). The DJ has a small chip top edge at spine and the interior page edges have light tanning. Remainder. Content: Sixth-century Britain hasn't often been used as the setting for a novel--little is known about the period--but Wolf has taken names and dates from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and built a story around them. The love story of Celtic princess Niniane and Saxon prince Ceawlin is the heart of the novel. When Ceawlin is forced into exile, he and Niniane find refuge with her people. Ceawlin, a gifted leader, gains the loyalty of both Celt and Briton; his destiny is to unite two peoples in one kingdom. The plotting is excellent and the main characters and their love story appealing. [1 copy available]

CELTIC ART: The Methods of Construction
by George Bain. B&W line drawings & photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 1973 Dover softcover edition, no printing given. I'm sure this is a much later printing thatn 1973 - the condition of the book is too good for that date. But who knows. Tiny edgewear top cover edge. Content: Reviewer: "This is a good introduction to Celtic Art and patterns, plus he covers its history and shows you how to even difficult patterns. Drawing Celtic Artwork is not easy, a gifted artist and craftsman Bain makes it look easy but its not. Howeverf if you practice the basic patterns you can get pretty good at it in a reasonable period of time. I have several of Aidan Meehan's books and this one is by far the best for beginners imho. Use Meehans works when you can replicate a good many of the patterns found here. It is also a fine resource for the more elaborate patterns which are not covered very well in other works. Many of these patterns can be transferred to leather, clay etc, you name it. Overall if you only get one book on Celtic Art get this one and with a bit of practice your effort will be rewarded." THE CELTIC BOOK OF SEASONAL MEDITATIONS:
Celebrate the Traditions of the Ancient Celts

by Claire Hamilton. Celtic knot cover art by Kathryn Sky-Peck. B&W celtic know watrmarks interior illus. Condition: NEW 2003 Red Wheel/Weiser small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: The idea of this book is to provide the reader with points of meditation and inspiration based on the seasons of the year and Celtic sources. The book is pocket sized, making it easy to take along. And the meditation pieces mostly cover one page, sometimes two at most. This allows for brief meditations if the time is limited, say at lunch time or early morning. The mediations are mostly derived from myths and legends of the Celtic people. Some of the material may have a lead-in to the meditative passages. Shapeshifting, for example, is basically outlined, and then a poem on shapeshifting is offered for meditation. The meditations are grouped according to their content, focusing on the four seasons. As the Celts were very seasonally focused in their practices, the material presented is well placed for the associations. Each section is introduced with some background, a basic overview of the holidays associated with the season, and some facts that explain why some material is included in the section. by Proinsias Mac Cana. B&W and color photos illustrate. Condition: Very good, pre-read 1970 Hamlyn large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no edition given. No major problems, just an older, pre-read book. CELTIC TREE MYSTERIES: Secrets of the Ogham
by Steve Blamires. B&W drawings and charts illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Llewellyn Trade Paperback, second printing. Content: Blamires constructs for his readers a base camp in the history and use of the ogham before launching an expedition toward complete understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the ogham and the trees they represent. Quite a quest, but Blamires succeeds. Where other popular forms of magic can be slanted toward development of only one aspect, Blamires's study of the threefold nature of the ogham insures that the body of practical magical knowledge gathered on this journey will be useful in all levels of existence. This book begins with "The Origins of Ogham," the series of notches or lines that are carved into standing stones, providing us with important clues to their magical history. Mr. Blamires then introduces us to the Tree Ogham, with insights into its uses and combinations. In Part Two, "Celtic Tree Mysteries" explains the three levels of threes--in the Celtic Triad tradition -- and shares important information about each kind of tree that is used in this form of spiritual practice. Mixing history, magic, and practical work, Mr. Blamires keeps the reader well-grounded while sharing profound Celtic spiritual mysteries. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE CELTIC YEAR: A Celebration of Celtic Christian Saints, Sites and Festivals
by Shirley Toulson. B&W photos, drawings, maps. Drawings by Brian Partridge. Condition: NEW 2002 Vega (London) Trade Paperback, reprint. Perfect. Content: This illustrated book includes the lives of the Celtic saints as well as descriptions of the major Celtic sites and festivals, and traditional prayers and blessings of the Celtic Church. Reviewer: "One of the important things about Celtic spirituality (and the reason so many people are embracing it) is that the Celts, unlike others in the "Western" world, saw the goodness of God in all His creation. They lived in the world and they loved it. So Shirley Toulson takes us through the year as the Celts lived it, celebrating their saints from the great three of Columba, Patrick, and Brigit to the more obscure, the great seasonal feasts--holidays--such as Beltain and Samhain, and of course the holy days as well. Well illustrated, containing maps to many of the holy places (of which the Celtic lands have so many), and lots of literary excerpts, poems, and prayers, this is a book to enjoy year after year. Organized by month and season rather than day, as the Celts lived and we should too, this is a book to keep close and consult often." [1 copy available]

THE CELTS
by Frank Delaney. Wonderful B&W maps & photos, drawings plus color photo section. Condition: Gently pre-read 1987 Little Brown Trade Paperback, first US Edition. Although there is a library stamp inside front & back covers, this book was never shelved in a library - I know this for sure. Light edgewear. Content: They have been called "one of the great barbarian peoples of the world." An impression of the Celts persists that portrays them as wild, excitable, warlike, ferocious, and uncivilized - in their later manifestations much given to drink, song, and entertainment. This is a personal quest in which Delaney discovers the truth about his forefathers. From the plains of Hungary, through Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany, and France, into Scotland, Wales, and the west of Ireland, he traces the origins, growth, flowering and eventual decline of a people whose very name conjures up romance and adventure. This was a companion book to Delaney's BBC series on the Celts. While some of the information is dated, more than the majority of the history is current. Questions welcome [1 copy available]

THE CELTS
by Ferhrd Herm. B&W photo section with B&W maps throughout. Condition: UNREAD c. 1975 St. Martin's Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no edition given. I believe this may have been a special printing or perhaps a history book club edition. Content: Reviewer: "If you are looking for a good general introduction to the culture of the Celts, this is a good starting place. The book goes over the few contemporary historical accounts of the Celts (Greek and Roman), a little of the archaeology, the mythology and the art. Mr. Herm does not attempt to be the final resource on the Celts, but tries to give people an idea of their complex society. The Celts did not write their own history, so we have to be content with contemporary Greek and Roman writings on their culture. What they wrote about tells as much about the ancient Greeks and Romans as it does about the Celts. The author tries to define at what point in time we can delineate a Celtic culture, plus he tries to put the Celts into context of other contemporary "barbaric" cultures such as the Scythians and Ilyrians. There is also a discussion of current (mid 1970s) theories about the origins of the Indo-European cultures, which the Celts belonged to, and where the pre-Indo-European cultures originated.. While some of this information may be dated, it is still an important source for Celtic history. Questions welcome [2 copies available]

DICTIONARY OF CELTIC MYTHOLOGY
by James MacKillop. Unfortunately no graphics. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1998 Oxford University Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. The DJ has 2 repaired short, thin box-cutter "cuts." 402 pages. Content: In compiling this volume, MacKillop, an English professor who specializes in Celtic studies, drew not only upon texts written in Irish and Welsh but also on Breton, Cornish, Manx, and Scottish Gaelic sources and traditions. In addition to gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, creatures, and other mythological figures, the approximately 4,000 entries cover real and imaginary places, archaeological sites, animals and plants, narrative cycles, and ideas. Entries, which frequently include variant spellings and etymologies, vary in length from a single identifying phrase to more than four pages, but the majority are one or two paragraphs. Asterisks within the text of an article indicate those terms that are treated further in separate entries, and numerous cross-references guide the user from alternate titles, names, and spellings to the forms used by MacKillop. Supplementing the dictionary portion of the work are a general guide to pronunciation of the various Celtic languages and a 13-page bibliography of selected sources pertaining to Celtic literature and culture. Especially helpful is a topical index that classifies entries under 36 broad categories, such as concepts, games, literary forms, monsters, rituals and curses, and saints. THE DRUID KING: A Novel
by Norman Spinrad. Condition: NEW 2003 Knopf hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, assumed first printing. Content: Science fiction author Spinrad switches genres, refashioning an intriguing legend into an epic piece of historical fiction. When Julius Caesar set his sights westward, determined to expand the Roman Empire into Gaul, only one man stood in his way: Vercingetorix. Dubbed the king of the Druids, Vercingetorix accomplished the seemingly impossible when he united the disparate tribes of Gaul into a fighting force determined to prevent the Romans from encroaching any further into Gallic territory. A crafty leader and a fearless warrior who, ironically, had been trained as a youth in the Roman army, he organized a brilliant resistance that briefly threatened the military prowess of Rome. In fact, much is made of the fact that Caesar had to enlist the aid of the Teutons, a Germanic tribe, in order to crush the Gallic rebellion. Spinrad breathes new life into a mythical figure, reimagining the adventures and the motivations of a larger-than-life superhero. Replete with action and intrigue, this fictional biography is distinguished by the attention paid to the details of the Celtic, Latin, and Germanic cultures. [1 copy available]

by Aidan Meehan. B&W patterns & designs. Condition: NEW 1999 Thames & Hudson large softcover [11.0 x 8.5 x 0.3 (64 pages)], first printing. Content: The Lindisfarne Gospels is an eighth-century masterpiece of Celtic illumination. After careful study, Aidan Meehan has beautifully redrawn more than fifty designs that appear on its pages. THE MABINOGION
translated by Gwyn Jones and Thomas Jones. Condition: NEW 1977 J. M. Dent (London) paperback, revised edition.. Tiny edgewear with light tanning to page edges. Content: While the Celtic Arthurian legends are popular, this work is almost unknown outside of academic circles. The work is divided into 11 disparate tales. Only the four of the first section are explicitly "branches of the Mabinogi," or stories of a youth. The youth in question, according to a tradition followed by Gwyn Jones in her introduction, is Pryderi, the son of a Welsh King, Pwyll. However, the cyfarwyddi, or Welsh bards who told the tales, added so many digressions to them that Pryderi became a secondary character in a sea of folktales. Particularly interesting is the motif of the chastised wife. Pryderi's mother, Rhiannon, is punished twice. In the first tale, she is falsely accused of eating her son (who has been spirited away) and must offer herself to be ridden like a horse at the court of Arbeth. In the third tale, she and Pryderi are both put under enchantment by Llwyd, a king of the Otherworld, and are only rescued by a ruse of Manawydan, the Briton who married Rhiannon after Pwyll died. Manawydan threatens to hang a mouse who has been eating his wheat, when Llwyd appears to him and confesses that the mouse is his wife. The other tales and romances allude both to the world of the Mabinogi and Arthur's Britain. Among the best is "Culhwch and Olwen," which contains a genealogical catalogue trumping anything in Genesis. The Mabinogion is not as easy to read as some of the more popular Celtic legends, but it's worth it. [1 copy available]

MERLIN: Priest of Nature
by Jean Markale. B&W decorations. Condition: NEW 1995 Inner Traditions Trade Paperback, second printing. Tiny, tiny edgewear. Content: Was Merlin a mythical character or a real person? If he was a real person, when and where did he live? In this provocative survey of all the known literary and historical sources, Jean Markale pieces together a compelling story of who and what Merlin might have been. Combining his investigation of the sources with fragments of Celtic mythology, Druidic culture, and the esoteric tradition, Markale draws an enlightening portrait of the archetypal Wild Man and shaman known as Merlin, who lived in the Lowlands of Scotland late in the sixth century, some fifty years after the reign of King Arthur. In a state of divine madness Merlin sought refuge in the forest, where he inherited the gift of prophecy. With him was his companion, Vivian, an essential element of the Merlin legend. Their sacred clearing in the woods -- described in some legends as an invisible castle of glass or air -- was the site of their ecstatic journey of enlightenment and union with nature. From his place in the Cosmic Tree and outside of time, Merlin the enchanter challenges us to reexamine our way of life. When the Merlin legend resurfaced in the twelth century, his message of the universal brotherhood of all beings and things called out to a rapidly urbanizing society that was losing touch with nature. His warning, which went unheeded, is no less relevant to us today than it was at the dawn of the modern era. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE RISE OF THE CELTS (The History of Civilization series)
by H. Hubert. Translated from the French by M.R. Dobie. B&W maps, charts, & archeological drawings illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read 1988 Dorset Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. B&W maps, archeological drawings illustrate. The book edges show small shelfwear and the DJ shows edgewear top and bottom edges and corners. Better than it sounds. Content: The DJ refers to this book as "volume 1," but I have not see that in any other notes on this book. In this classic of ethnology, a noted scholar traces the origins, history, and influence of the Celts on Indo-European peoples. Beginning with the earliest archaeological and linguistic evidence, he tracks the migration of Celts into Europe and as far west as the British Isles. An exceptionally thorough treatment of Celtic languages shows how their relationship to other tongues reveals information about Celtic origins and migrations. In addition, archaeological evidence -- weapons, armor, pottery, and decorative ornament--from a variety of cultures is reviewed (particularly artifacts from Switzerland's Iron Age settlement of La Tène), and the expansion of the Celts in the British Isles and abroad during the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Period is explored. Unabridged reprint of the classic updated 1934 edition. 141 line illustrations. 4 halftones. 12 maps. [Note: of course, some of this information is a bit dated, i.e., not covering the recent discovery of Celtic "mummies" in the desert of China, but well worth the read.] Questions welcome. THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DRUIDS
by Tadhg MacCrossan. Condition: NEW 1995 Llewellyn slim papaerback, second edition, first printing. Content: Reviewer: "Not only does this book tell one what the Druids are, but also and importantly it dispels many false beliefs and rumors and tells one what Druids are not. Druids are identified as the highest rank of learned men among the Celtic people. One skilled in the rituals, laws and customs of the people, and skilled in magical arts, poetry songs and verses. We see also, through comparison, the close relationship between the Druids and the `Eriloz or Erulians' (Rune Masters) of the Germanic people. MacCrossan has also identified the female Druids, called Ueleda or Bendrui, acting as priestesses of the Goddess representing the European virtues: (1) Wisdom or poetry and learning, (2) Physical strength or health and courage, and (3) Productivity, fertility and sexuality. We see also an introduction to the three Realms and the Druidic concept of time. Celtic Magic is discussed and how a Druid's spell would be accomplished by singing a certain kind of song. And we see mention of manufacture of the Druid's Gem (ovum anguinum). We are given introduction to the festivals of the Druids and even a discussion of their clothing or vestments - dispelling the idea that Druids need wear full white robes. Finally we are left with a discussion of `Neo-Druidism' its modern developments and a glimpse at where the future may take us. Questions welcome. [2 copies available]

WOMEN OF THE CELTS
by Jean Markale. Translated by A. Mygind, C. Hauch, & P. Henry. Cover art by Joanna Zamojdo & Judy Jensen. Condition: UNREAD 1986 Inner Traditions Trade Paperback, 5th printing. Tiny spot on fore edges. Interior perfect. Content: Markale discusses the role of women in the various Celtic societies without generalizing or idealizing; he spends many pages on each of the Celtic lands, and focuses on specific legal codes that concerned women's rights and limitations. His studies reveal a people caught somewhere between equality and sexism; women still held nearly equal rights with men but were losing ground. He then launches into several chapters of comparative mythology, seeking common archetypes that can be found in many Celtic stories, such as "The Submerged Princess", "The Great Queen", "Our Lady of the Night", "The Rebellion of the Flower-Daughter", and "The Lady of the Orchard." He draws parallels between the various stories and looks for the psychological undertones. Interesting and informative work. [1 copy available]
