THE BUNNY WHO FOUND EASTER
by Charlotte Zolotow. Beautiful color illustrations by Helen Craig. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Houghton Mifflin soft cover, first printing. Short "repaired" tear top edge back cover. Interior perfect. Content: First published nearly 40 years ago, Zolotow's ingenuous paean to spring, a time "when everything lovely begins once again," indeed feels reborn with Craig's winsome illustrations. Combining full-page spreads with smaller panels and spots, her ink, watercolor and colored-pencil art draws from a sumptuous palette of Easter egg colors that reaches full bloom at tale's end, when spring finally catches up to the lonely bunny in search of companionship. When a sleepy owl tells the solo bunny that "there are always rabbits at Easter," he attempts to hunt the place down. Youngsters will be tickled by this misunderstanding and will enjoy having a leg up on the long-eared fellow. Equally gratifying are Craig's renderings of the antics of a diminutive mouse who trails and apes the wandering bunny. In the spirit of a true quest, both travelers are rewarded for their journey: each ends up with a loving mate - and seven offspring. Snuggling with his brood, "The bunny's heart throbbed with happiness at this wonderful earthsmelling sunlit bunny-filled world." Like the endearing protagonist, Zolotow's unabashedly sweet, endearing tale of new life finds its match with Craig's gentle landscapes and cuddly characters. Ages 4-8. Questions welcome. THE DUMB BUNNIES' EASTER
by Sue Denim. Crazy, vivid color illustrations by Dav Pilkey - some made with Hamburger Helper (???). Condition: UNREAD 1998 Scholastic soft cover, 7th printing. Tiny edge wear. The illustrations--done by an artist who describes his medium as "watercolors, India ink, acrylics, and Hamburger Helper"--match the story perfectly: pink, buck-toothed, and round in the middle, the bunnies are goofy indeed. SMOKY'S SPECIAL EASTER PRESENT
by Dorothea Lachner. Clever, cute, colorful illustrations by Christa Unzner. Translation from the German by marianne Martens. Condition: Gently pre-read 1996 North-South hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. DJ shows light shelf wear with tiny "repaired" tear bottom edge. Interior clean. Content: When Emma wishes for a special present from the Easter Bunny, her scruffy pet rabbit travels to the city to seek the perfect gift. Smoky slips onto the bus, resists a basket of fresh carrots, and narrowly escapes becoming an Easter gift himself before discovering that he can't buy a thing without money. After a dangerous trip through the park, he ends up in the middle of a traffic jam, where Emma's father miraculously rescues him and takes him home. Emma exclaims, "Having you back is the best Easter present of all!" This story, imported from Switzerland, has been translated into smooth, readable language. However, the predictable plot meanders from event to event without ever building dramatic tension or emotion. The contrived ending is disappointing, and Emma's reaction pat. The watercolor illustrations are washed across textured paper in pastel colors. Smoky is not the typical ideal of a cute bunny?his coat, mostly charcoal black on white, with black spots, gives him an unkempt look. Yet his posture and expressions sometimes express strong emotion, such as fear at being surrounded by a group of growling dogs, or contentment at being reunited with his mistress. Questions welcome. THE VERY FIRST EASTER
by Paul L. Maier. Wonderful color paintings by Francisco Ordaz. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Concordia large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), 5th printing. Content: Reviewer: This book follows the same format as Paul Maier's companion book, The Very First Christmas. Maier embeds the story of the first Easter inside the story of a 10-year-old boy named Christopher, who lives with his mother and father, a forest ranger, in a remote area of America's western mountains. As Christopher and his parents are sitting around the table dying Easter eggs, Christopher wonders aloud what the true story of Easter is. His Dad picks up the Bible and the two of them begin to read aloud from the book of Luke. The narrative follows their discussion as they read, with Christopher asking questions that any child might typically ask -- "How do we know Jesus was really God?" "Why did they hang people on crosses, Dad?" "But if Jesus had a solid body and wasn't a ghost, how did he get through the walls?" Maier's format works well in this setting. Quotations from Luke tell the story, but the discussion between Christopher and his Dad explain the Easter story in a way that seems natural and easy to understand. While the text of this book is quite good, what makes this book a excellent addition to the Easter collection is the outstanding artwork of Francisco Ordaz. Questions welcome. [2 copies available]
