THE BUNNY WHO FOUND EASTER
by Charlotte Zolotow. Beautiful color illustrations by Helen Craig. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Houghton Mifflin soft cover, first printing. Short "repaired" tear top edge back cover. Interior perfect. Content: First published nearly 40 years ago, Zolotow's ingenuous paean to spring, a time "when everything lovely begins once again," indeed feels reborn with Craig's winsome illustrations. Combining full-page spreads with smaller panels and spots, her ink, watercolor and colored-pencil art draws from a sumptuous palette of Easter egg colors that reaches full bloom at tale's end, when spring finally catches up to the lonely bunny in search of companionship. When a sleepy owl tells the solo bunny that "there are always rabbits at Easter," he attempts to hunt the place down. Youngsters will be tickled by this misunderstanding and will enjoy having a leg up on the long-eared fellow. Equally gratifying are Craig's renderings of the antics of a diminutive mouse who trails and apes the wandering bunny. In the spirit of a true quest, both travelers are rewarded for their journey: each ends up with a loving mate - and seven offspring. Snuggling with his brood, "The bunny's heart throbbed with happiness at this wonderful earthsmelling sunlit bunny-filled world." Like the endearing protagonist, Zolotow's unabashedly sweet, endearing tale of new life finds its match with Craig's gentle landscapes and cuddly characters. Ages 4-8. Questions welcome. Content: Reviewer: "First of all, this book just looks fun! It is shaped, has many bright colors, and it SPARKLES!! This is a book that you will not mind reading several times. It also has a great message. It begins with, "The colors in this basket are my own special way for me to tell the story of that first Easter Day." Kids will hear the true story of Easter in a fun, colorful way. By using the many colors commonly found in Easter baskets, the author takes us through the entire Easter story. From the green palm leaves, to the purple wine, to the red blood, to the brown cave, to the white angel, to the yellow sun. Each section is presented in rhyming format. In addition, the children depicted in this book are very diverse, which is an added bonus. This book shows Asian, Black, white, and biracial children, all experiencing the love of Jesus. My Easter BAsket and the True Story of Easter

THE VERY FIRST EASTER
by Paul L. Maier. Wonderful color paintings by Francisco Ordaz. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Concordia large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), 5th printing. Content: Reviewer: This book follows the same format as Paul Maier's companion book, The Very First Christmas. Maier embeds the story of the first Easter inside the story of a 10-year-old boy named Christopher, who lives with his mother and father, a forest ranger, in a remote area of America's western mountains. As Christopher and his parents are sitting around the table dying Easter eggs, Christopher wonders aloud what the true story of Easter is. His Dad picks up the Bible and the two of them begin to read aloud from the book of Luke. The narrative follows their discussion as they read, with Christopher asking questions that any child might typically ask -- "How do we know Jesus was really God?" "Why did they hang people on crosses, Dad?" "But if Jesus had a solid body and wasn't a ghost, how did he get through the walls?" Maier's format works well in this setting. Quotations from Luke tell the story, but the discussion between Christopher and his Dad explain the Easter story in a way that seems natural and easy to understand. While the text of this book is quite good, what makes this book a excellent addition to the Easter collection is the outstanding artwork of Francisco Ordaz. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
