THE JOURNAL OF PROFESSOR ABRAHAM VAN HELSING
edited and with critical commentary by Professor Allen C. Kupfer. B& W drawings Keith Birdsong. Condition: UNREAD 2006 TOR paperback edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: This book is one heck of a spoof on the vampire & Van Helsing legends. Kupfer asserts that he found this journal, complete with notes from his grandfather, Daniel, in his grandmother's house after she died. The journal begins with Van Helsing's first exposure to vampires, when he attends a lecture given by a Dr. Borescu. Leaving his beloved wife, Rita, in Amsterdam, Van Helsing travels with Borescu back to his native Romania, where the skeptical professor has a face-to-face encounter with a lovely but deadly vampiress known as Malia. After tragedy strikes in Romania, Van Helsing leaves for home by train. When vampires attack the train, it appears that Malia is not going to let Van Helsing go without a fight. He arrives home only to face a great personal tragedy and the realization that he may never be able to escape the vampires. The book is inventive but does require some knowledge of Dracula and vampire legends. [1 copy available]

VAMPIRES (Monster Chronicles)
by Stephen Krensky. Color photos & movie stills plus B&W drawings. Condition: NEW 2007 Lerner soft cover, first printing. Content: With its high-interest subject and conversational tone, this title in the new Monster Chronicles series is a candidate for reluctant as well as strong readers. Veteran writer Krensky introduces vampire habits and history, based on folklore and legends across cultures. Later chapters address historical reports of vampire attacks, famous fictional vampires, real-life suspects, and vampires' enduring popularity. Some readers will find Krensky's glibness a little off-putting, and because he plays up the spine-tingling effects with comments implying vampires are real and on the loose, the book may be a problematic choice for school projects. However, the topic, the strong visuals (including lots of movie stills), and the casual voice will attract plenty of readers. [1 copy available]

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (VHS movie)
directed by Roy Ward Baker. Movie stills back cover. Condition: 1993 Orion release of the 1970 film, in EP mode, 89 minutes running time. The tape itself is in excellent condition having been viewed only once, but the top corners of the box show a bit of shelf wear. Content: Reviewer: "This movie is generally considered to be the best of the Hammer Films "Carmilla Trilogy" and the most faithful to J. Sheridan LeFanu's original story. Here, a frankly lesbian Carmilla Karnstein spends most of the film seducing and drinking the blood of several lovely young ladies in eighteenth century Austria. Like most Hammer productions this film relies heavily on stylism, and because the film is largely a straightforward retelling of LeFanu's tale, the storyline never sags. The sexual element is very much in evidence, serving as the underpinning of this film. There are a fair number of bare breasts and nubile bodies upon which Carmilla feeds, and the dialogue (much of it lifted from LeFanu) is classically Victorian and tastefully erotic. Considered one of the best of the genre." This edition of the movie contains two scenes that have been previously deleted from other releases. The first scene is in the prologue with the decapitation of the vampire woman. The second scene is at the climax with several cuts reinstated between Peter Cushing and the demise of Carmilla. With these scenes finally added and a reproduction at standard play, this video is a must for any serious Hammer horror film fan. The film stars Ingrid Pitt, George Cole, Kate O'Mara, Peter Cushing, Dawn Addams, Madeline Smith, and Ferdy Mayne. [1 copy available]

VAMPIRES: THE OCCULT TRUTH
by Konstantinos. Condition: NEW 2004 Llewellyn Trade Paprback, 13th printing. No, this isn't fiction - but . . . Content: Feeling drained? Perhaps you are the unwitting victim of a psychic vampire. Want to know more? In this his second book, Konstantinos explores the folklore surrounding the blood-drinking vampire and, more importantly, exposes the threat of 20th century vampires which feed on psychic energy. I found this amalgam of stories from the past with Konstantinos' experiences in the present appealing to both the folklorist and the occultist sides of my curiosity. Konstantinos' theories will be considered controversial by many, but I don't feel that they can be summarily dismissed. Includes information about historic vampires, namely Vlad Tepes, Elizabeth Bathory, Gilles de Rais, Fritz Haarmann, and John George Haigh. [1 copy available]
