THE DREAMKEEPER
text & color illustrations by Robert Ingpen. Illustrations are colorful and detailed. Condition: Gently pre-read 1995 Vanwell (Canada) hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), no printing given. Inscription on top title page. Content: Written in the form of a letter to his granddaughter, Ingpen's fanciful picture book chronicles an imaginary being who "catches the creatures of our dreams when they escape to reality" and returns them to a place called the Dreamtree. In less able hands, such a premise could rapidly decline into New Age-ish nonsense; instead, myth and lore collide to create a promising fantasy. Mystical, dreamlike and occasionally nightmarish, Ingpen's detailed illustrations blend pencil sketches and watercolors to flesh out the imagery evoked in his hand-lettered text. He shows the elaborate traps used by the Dreamkeeper; the shoes with the special backwards soles to mystify those who would try and track him; the charms, tokens and lures that are his stock in trade - even the solar-powered remote control used by his goblin assistant to "unwind invisibility." Sharp-eyed readers will recognize some familiar faces among the inhabitants of the Dreamtree -- the Frog Prince, Long John Silver and the White Rabbit, among others. A most unusual book Questions welcome. Ages 4 - 8. [1copy available]

MR. MISTOFFELEES with Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
poems by T. S. Eliot. Color illustrations and cover by Errol Le Cain. Condition: Very good +, gently pre-read (if at all) 1991 Harcourt Brace hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first US Edition, First Printing. I believe this book is "unread" but it has had shelfwear handling. Wonderful, vivid color illustrations by Errol Le Cain, his last book. Content: The poems for this book are from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats - the basis for the Broadway musical, Cats. Published posthumously, Le Cain's last book proves a rousing finale. Mr. Mistoffelees, the magical conjuring cat, is among the liveliest and most winsome of all of Eliot's felines. As rendered here, he is a majestic and beguiling figure indeed, with Cheshire-like, glinting eyes, a playing-card collar, a magnificent midnight-blue cape displaying the moon and stars and an irresistible aura of intrigue, cunning and self-satisfaction. The cat-burglars Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer provide a fitting second act, ingenious and even mysterious in their own rough-and-tumble way. Throughout, Le Cain not only captures awondrous range of expressions but indulges his considerable fancy for extravagant, whimsical patterns. The result is a visually rich bookthat celebrates Eliot's verbal acrobatics and contributes a few capers of its own. All ages. Questions welcome. [1copy available]

MULTICULTURAL PLAYS FOR CHILDREN: Volume 1: Grades K - 3
by Pamela Gerke. Cover art by Irene Kelly. Condition: UNREAD 1996 Smith and Kraus hardcover (library binding - pictorial boards), second printing. This is an Ex-Library book with all markings, but it was never checked out. Interior clean & tight. Content: Scripts for 10 plays to be put on by or for primary-grade children, along with a valuable introduction featuring notes on how to go about using drama with young children and techniques for altering the plays for different groups and production conditions. Each script features background information on the story, rehearsal time, running time, cast size and gender, as well as appendixes for pronunciation of vocabulary, directions for construction of sets, props and costumes lists, and notes on the use of music and sound. The plays could well be used by secondary-school drama classes for performances for younger students as well as the younger children themselves. The selections were created from folktales from literary traditions (sources are cited in the bibliography). The Little Red Hen, Anansi, and Vasilisa appear, as well as variants of stories such as "The Bremen Town Musicians." The playwright has worked to keep these as authentic as possible. Vi Hilbert, an Upper Skagit elder, has written a preface attesting to the authenticity of the Skagit tale and to the value of drama for keeping storytelling traditions alive. This is a valuable collection for libraries doing programming with children. Plays from Liberia, France, China, Ireland, Italy, the US, & Mexico. [1 copy available]

OF SWANS, SUGARPLUMS, AND SATIN SLIPPERS: Ballet Stories for Children (Blue Ribbon Book)
by Violette Verdy. Wonderful soft, dreamy color illustrations by Marcia Brown. Condition: UNREAD 1996 Scholastic soft cover, first printing. Light shelf wear. Content: Although there are a number of retellings of the most frequently performed ballets, this collection by a former principal ballerina captures the tone and character of each dance. For example, the great "white" ballets, Giselle and Swan Lake, are told in the romantic tradition. Coppelia is given a more lighthearted and matter-of-fact treatment. The notes that precede each of the tales are most interesting for their history and insights. Brown's paintings, done in watercolor, pastel, and pencil, dress the pages with sets and costumes that readers might experience in live performances. Each story has three or four illustrations, not always well-placed, that depict the high points. This collection, which also includes The Firebird and The Nutcracker, will serve as a good written and visual introduction to six staples of the classical repertoire. Questions welcome.
