FRIENDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE / AMIGOS DEL OTRO LADO (Bilingual Children's Story)
by Gloria Anzaldua. Wonderful color illustrations by Consuelo Mendez. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1994 Children's Book Press soft cover, no printing given. Problem: light edgewear bottom edge with a shelfwear "near-crease" back cover. Interior clean & tight. Content: A straightforward bilingual depiction of the variety of responses to Mexican ``illegals'' by Chicanos already living in Texas. Though her friends' first reaction on seeing Joaqu¡n is hostility toward the young mojadito (wetback), Prietita warns them off and befriends him, planning to take him to the herb woman for treatment for the sores he hides under long sleeves. A visit from the Border Patrol hastens the event; the herb woman hides Joaqu¡n and his mother until the danger is past, then shows Prietita how to help her new friend. What's special about this simple story is the realism with which the circumstances are presented. The migra represent the law, and there's nothing negative in their depiction (``even'' the Chicano migra laughs when someone makes a joke), but Prietita's kindness is clearly what is valued here. In M‚ndez's powerful mixed-media illustrations, freely drawn graphite lines define the strong, planar faces and the poverty of the surroundings; appropriately, pervasive bleak gray is only somewhat tempered by the hot, bright colors of Latino clothing and the desert. An authentic portrayal; an excellent basis for discussion of an important issue. Both the Author and the Illustrator are from South Texas. (Ages 4-10) [1 copy only]

JOSE FELICIANO'S FELIZ NAVIDAD: Two Stories Celebrating Christmas
by Jose Feliciano. Vivid & vibrant color cover art & interior art by David Diaz. Condition: NEW 2003 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards depicting guitar) and DJ (in mylar jacket). Content: Like an oversized, multipaged, bilingual Christmas card, this gorgeous production's minimal text consists of the lyrics to Feliciano's famous song and emphatically wishes readers both Feliz Navidad and a Merry Christmas. Beautifully designed pages feature Diaz's characteristic stylized paintings and song lyrics in large, faux hand-lettered font. The pictures make reference to and contrast many Christmas traditions and symbols, and show that all cultures emphasize families and friends celebrating together. Two introductory pages introduce the parranda as a long-standing tradition in Puerto Rico and (somewhat gratuitously) a paragraph explains that "Christmas crosses all cultural boundaries." The subtitle depends on a very close reading of the pictures to decipher the two stories. Wonderful for kids and adults - recommended for ages 4 - 8. Gift wrapping available. [3 copies available]

A SPOON FOR EVERY BITE/ Una Cuchara Para Cada Bocado (Bilingual Story)
by Joe Hayes. Great Southwestern color illustrations by Rebecca Leer. Condition: NEW 2004 Cinco Puntos Press (El Paso) soft cover, first edition, first printing. Content: A rich man is asked to be the godparent to the son of a couple. When he agrees, the couple invites him over for dinner--but only after they have saved their money to buy a third spoon in order to entertain their guest. The man is amused that these people are so poor that they didn't even have three spoons, but his amusement turns to envy when his hosts tell him that they have a friend who uses a different new spoon for every bite he eats. Determined to keep up with this competition, he wastes his entire fortune buying spoons, sending the used ones to the poor couple. Left destitute, the distraught man goes to see the couple, demanding to know how their story could be true. The answer is surprising--and clever. The Spanish translation is every bit as good as the English original, thus making this critically acclaimed story available to an entirely new audience. Leer's acrylic illustrations make use of subdued desert colors while emphasizing facial expressions with humor and expertise. [1 copy available]
