Royal Diaries: Cleopatra

The Royal Diaries: THE LADY OF PALENQUE: Flower of Bacal (Mesoamerica, A.D. 749)
by Anna Kirwan. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2004 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards), first printing. Name loose end page and gilt fore edge. Interior clean & tight. Content: This entry in the Royal Diaries series takes readers to 749 C.E. Mesoamerica. Thirteen-year-old princess ShahnaK'in Yaxchel Pacal is chosen to marry the King of Xuchpi (Copan). First, though, the spoiled princess faces a long journey to her new home, which, as it turns out, brings her face to face with everything from natural disasters to human enemies. The text is dense, and Kirwan's descriptive prose has an archaic flavor; readers may struggle with the vocabulary and transliterated names. What readers will like best is ShahnaK'in herself, an animated, independent character, whose commentary incorporates interesting details of Mayan culture (including descriptions of shrunken heads and body piercing that may make some readers shudder) as well as a sense of universal issues -- from homesickness to developing self-reliance. Supporting materials include historical background, a family tree, and notes Recommended for ages 9 - 12. [1 copy available]

The Royal Diaries: ISABEL: Jewel of Castilla, Spain, 1466 (Historical Fiction)
by Carolyn Mayer. B&W maps, photos, illustrations. Condition: NEW 2000 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), fourth printing. Gilt edges. Content: Bristling with palace intrigue, this entry in the Royal Diaries series tells the story of the pious, determined, soon-to-be Queen Isabel of Castilla during a volatile period in history. Known to American children as the royal who sponsored Christopher Columbuss journey to the New World, Isabel had a rocky adolescence. Ripped from her family and banished to Segovia by her half-brother, King Enrique of Castilla, Isabel endured a tedious life. The country was in turmoil; both Enrique and his half- brother Alfonso had claimed the crown. Although the rocky political terrain of what would later become part of Spain is touched upon in Isabel's fictionalized diary, the book centers on her marriage prospects )Enrique arranged several matches for his half- sister, based largely on his need to secure power). Wishing to marry Fernando, Prince of Aragon and King of Sicily, Isabel took matters into her own hands, scheming royally until her dream became a reality in 1469. [2 copies available.}

Royal Diaries, Queen Isabella

The Royal Diaries: MARIE ANTOINETTE, Princess of Versailles, Austria-France, 1769 (Historical Fiction)
by Kathryn Lasky. B&W maps, photos, illustrations. Condition: NEW 2000 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), fourth printing. Gilt edges. Content: Lasky takes historical fact and weaves it into a sympathetic account of an adolescent Marie Antoinette. Antonia's diary begins shortly before her politically arranged betrothal and marriage to Louis Auguste, Dauphin of France. It describes her struggles with strange new customs, in particular the elaborate French Court etiquette. The descriptions of Versailles and palace life hold true to fact and fit well into the diary of the Dauphine experiencing her new country. The diary also does a believable job of taking Marie Antoinette from a girl of 13 to a young woman of 15. Antonia goes from playing childhood games to become Marie Antoinette, future queen, playing political games with Madame du Barry. At the conclusion of the novel, an epilogue continues the story to its historical completion. Notes and a family tree are useful for readers who know little of 18th-century royalty and politics. Royal Diaries, Marie Antoinette

The Royal Diaries: NZINGHA: WARRIOR QUEEN OF MATAMBA, Angola, Africa, 1595 (Historical Fiction)
by Patricia McKissack. B&W maps & illustrations. Condition: NEW 2000 Scholastic haradcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first printing. Content: Nzingha, an Angolan princess in the 16th and 17th centuries, was born in a land in which women were predestined to be subservient to men's whims. Nzingha, however, broke that rule and, following her father's footsteps, became a leader after his death. Through fictionalized diary entries, readers learn that Queen Nzingha is knowledgeable, intelligent, and brave. She is opposed to Portuguese slavery and European ways of life, although she secretly learns the outsiders' language and uses it to her advantage. The diary format will appeal to readers and the author's use of time lines, seasons, and actual place names makes the story believable and interesting. While the ending is too abrupt, this is still a good addition to the series. The maps, photos, glossary, illustrations, and genealogical trees enhance the presentation. [1 copy available]
