STAR TREK: MISSION TO HORATIUS
by Mack Reynolds. B&W illustrations by Sparky Moore. Condition: UNREAD 1999 Pocket hardcover (pictorial boards, no DJ issued), first printing. Content: Mission to Horatius, the very first Star Trek novel, is only mediocre as a story, but its nostalgia potential is vast. In the introduction, editor John Ordover dedicates this authentic facsimile hardcover edition, complete with cheesily wonderful original illustrations, to "every Star Trek fan who was ever 8 years old." If that's you, switch off your late-century cynicism and return to 1968, when the starship Enterprise's weekly voyages were pushing the frontiers of mainstream America firmly into science fiction territory. The Enterprise has been on patrol too long--the crew is restless and irritable (especially that cranky old charmer Dr. McCoy), the engines are straining, and food is running low. But Captain Kirk is under sealed orders to head to the far away Horatius system to answer a mysterious distress call from some decidedly anti-Federation colonists. When our intrepid crew tries to help, they run afoul of stone-age creeps, drugged fanatics, and oppressed clones. To make matters worse, they (you guessed it) face a moral conflict with Federation General Order One, the so-called Prime Directive, which mandates noninterference with native cultures. With the reissue of charming oldies like Mission to Horatius, classic Trek will live long and prosper. [1 copy available]

STAR TREK: SAREK
by A. C. Crispin. Series cover art. Condition: UNREAD 1995 Pocket paperback original, first edition, first printing. Liight edgewear with rubbings alone bottom third front hinge. Content: Crispin has packed everything a die-hard Trekkie could want into this lighthearted romp with characters from the original series. Spock's father Sarek must uncover the origins of a plot to defame the Vulcans, for the dastardly scheme is only the first step in a plan to destroy the Federation. Needless to say, all of Sarek's respected diplomatic skills are needed to combat the villains. But Sarek is torn between doing his duty to the Federation or forsaking his beloved human wife Amanda, who is on her deathbed. Several subplots, including an interspecies romance between Kirk's nephew Peter and a Klingon girl add spice to the galactic stew. A lagniappe (for those readers who don't mind heavy sentimentality) is the addition of Amanda's journals, which are full of exotic details about life on Vulcan and heartfelt recollections of Sarek's and Spock's lives. Most of the best-loved characters put in appearances, and there are some amusing variations on the better known "trademark" lines. A rather jarring twist results when the normally repressed Spock becomes excessively emotional about his mother's demise. 405 pages. [1 copy available]

STAR TREK: THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES (TV Series)
by David Gerrold. B&W Illustrations by Tim Kirk. B&W "on-set" photo section. Condition: Good+ 1973 Ballantine Books original paperback, first printing. Edgewear with hinge crease. Interior clean & tight but tanning. Vertical crease back cover. Captain Kirk & tribbles cover. Content: This book by its own admission, "The Complete Story of One of Star Trek's Most Popular Episodes," which happens to have the same title as this book. The author is David Gerrold, who shares with us the story of his television script, including where it came from, how it was written, how it was eventually filmed and finally got onto the air as an episode of "Star Trek." Consequently, since this book is the true story of how a young college student earned some degree of fame and even fortune as the writer of what is clearly the funniest "Star Trek" episode of all time, it proves itself to be of as much interest to those interested in writing television shows in Hollywood as those who are confirmed Trekkies. STAR TREK ENTERPRISE: SHOCKWAVE (Series Novelization)
by Paul Ruditis. Written by Rick Berman & Brannon Braga. Condition: NEW 2002 Pocket Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: "The Vulcan Science Directorate has concluded that time travel is impossible." -- T'Pol The Starship Enterprise™ NX-01 has carried its crew farther into the reaches of space than any human has ever travelled. Commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer, they have charted new stars, explored planets, and made first contact with races previously unknown to even the Vulcans. And while it's true that they have made mistakes along the way, the crew of Enterprise have tried to live up to Starfleet's creed -- to boldly go. The Paraagan deep-space colony was just another first contact, unusual only in two aspects: it was a matriarchal society, and the planet's upper atmosphere was filled with a highly volatile gas. But the officers of Enterprise knew how to handle their shuttlepod, and they understood the Paraagan landing protocols. As the shuttlepod descended into the planet's atmosphere, they closed the plasma vents, certain that nothing could escape and ignite the gas. Thirty-six hundred colonists were vaporized in the blast. Every building, every living thing, everything on the surface was destroyed in the fireball. But how could it have happened? Every reading shows that the pod's vents were shut. Nevertheless, it could only have been the Enterprise crew who caused the destruction. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
