ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND MEN OF WAR-TIMES: Some Personal Recollections of War and Politics During the Lincoln Administration
by A. K. McClure. Introduction by James A. Rawley. B&W era photos. Condition: NEW 1996 Bison Books Trade Paperback, fourth edition. Perfect. Content: First published in 1892. An associate of Abraham Lincoln offers an intimate view of the president's relations with military men and top politicians, placing particular emphasis on the election campaigns of 1860 and 1864. A. K. McClure, a Republican powerbroker and later editor of the Philadelphia Times, reveals how Lincoln replaced Vice President Hannibal Hamlin with the Southern Democrat Andrew Johnson on the 1864 ticket. According to McClure, Lincoln kept his hand hidden in order not to offend Hamlin and his New England supporters. In 1892, the publication of Abraham Lincoln and Men of War-Times caused an angry exchange of letters (included in this edition) between McClure and the late president's secretary, John G. Nicolay. ANDREW JACKSON AND HIS INDIAN WARS
by Robert V. Remini. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 2001 Viking hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: "I want to assure the reader that it is not my intention to excuse or exonerate Andrew Jackson for the role he played in the removal of Native Americans west of the Mississippi River. My purpose is simply to explain what happened and why": so writes Remini, who won the National Book Award for his three-volume biography of the seventh president. This provocative book is sure to create controversy for scholars, the Native American community and lay historians, among others. Jackson was the president who "removed" the five "civilized" tribes from the South and forced them westward across the Mississippi River. Existing studies portray Jackson as a villain. Not so, says Remini, who examines Jackson's life to show that he was a product of his age, nothing more, nothing less. Indian tribes sided with the British during the Revolution, then repeatedly confronted the first generation of settlers who moved into the western frontier Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi. Jackson vaulted to national prominence when he bloodily crushed the British-allied Creek tribe in 1814 during the War of 1812. Then, with or without presidential approval, Southern District Commander Jackson invaded Spanish-held Florida; acting as an "Indian commissioner," he proceeded to lever indigenous people off their ancestral lands in exchange for territory farther west. The idea, Remini says, was first espoused by Thomas Jefferson and was supported by the vast majority of frontier Americans. Despite or, indeed, because of its grave, catastrophic results, Jackson's policy deserves to be judged in light of early 19th-century America, argues Remini. He further contends that Jackson's removal policy may have actually saved the tribes from being exterminated. Expert reviewers, pundits and descendants may feel otherwise. Questions welcome. THE DAY KENNEDY WAS SHOT
by Jim Bishop. Condition: UNREAD 1973 Bantam paperback, third printing. Tiny edgewear with light tanning to interior page edges. Content: Reviewer: "im Bishop is an outstanding writer and his format using hours of the day (i.e., 7:00 am, 8:00 am, etc.) took you to where everyone was at that time--Lee, JFK, the FBI Agent responsibile for Oswald, Jackie, the football, Ruby, etc,. His research was in-depth and made you never question its validity. I lived in Dallas when this event took place, but was too young to know what was happening. Jim Bishop took back to Dallas on that day and gave me more than I ever expected to receive from the book. This book will make you feel like a history buff. His excellent writing ability led me to purchase another of his books--"The Day Lincoln was Shot"--This one is "Ditto". [Note: I was at the Hotel Texas that morning, and Bishop's details, although he certainly knew more than did I, ring true - I like and trust this book. It's everything known in 1973.] [1 copy available]

THE JFK ASSASSINATION: The Facts and the Theories
by Carl Oglesby. Foreword by Norman Mailer. Condition: Pre-read 1992 Signet paperback, first printing. Spine crease with edge wear and light tanning. Content: Reviewer: "First, it must be said that this book is misleadingly packaged. The cover copy promises a disinterested, comprehensive overview of the JFK assassination and all the competing theories of how it happened. Instead, it's a collection of essays, journalism, and reviews spanning two decades, covering the assassination in particular and secret government in general, written by a left-leaning political analyst who presents his own ideas and opinions (except for a truly perfunctory afterword entitled, all-too-aptly, "Round up the Usual Suspects"). As such, however, it is an excellent book. If you've never read Carl Oglesby, you should try him. His work is characterized by laser-like intelligence and crystalline, energetic writing. He is always a pleasure to read. If I had to characterize him in terms of better known writers, I'd call him a cross between Robert Christgau and Renata Adler (in terms of both content -- Christgau for politics, Adler for analytic ability -- and style). This is an ideal starting place. After this, scramble to find a copy of The Yankee and Cowboy War, his major work. For me at least, the lack of a steadily accumulating body of work by Oglesby over the last two decades is a gap in our national intellectual life. With any luck, the Y2K coup will get him writing again." Questions welcome [1 copy available]

JEFFERSON ABROAD
by Thomas Jefferson. Edited by Douglas Wilson & Lucia Stanton. Condition: NEW 1999 Modern Library hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Jefferson, best known as the author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and as our third president, was an extraordinarily accomplished man with wide-ranging interests. From 1784 to 1789, he was America's envoy to France, during which time he also traveled widely on the European continent. From his extensive writings during these years, editors Wilson and Stanton (both with the International Center for Jefferson Studies in Monticello) have selected and annotated 110 of Jefferson's writings, mostly letters but also reports and papers on current developments in art, science, and agriculture in France and other European countries. In these graceful and engaging writings, the editors believe, he revealed much of his personality and thought. [1 copy available]

THOMAS JEFFERSON TRAVELS: Selected Writings 1784 - 1789
by Thomas Jefferson. Edited by Anthony Brandt. B&W maps. Condition: UNREAD 2006 National Geographic hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. DJ shows edge wear. Content: Powerfully written in Jefferson’s own words, the book traces his journeys throughout Europe during his five-year residency in Paris, where he replaced Benjamin Franklin as U.S. Minister to France. His insightful, sophisticated impressions give readers a new perspective on European life in the 18th century. Jefferson’s eloquent observations of his tours through southern France, northern Italy, Germany and Holland shed light on those places in history and deepen our understanding of one of the most progressive, cosmopolitan men of his age. He knew most of the leading lights of the liberal French aristocracy, which gave him a marvelous perch from which to watch the French Revolution begin. He conferred with the Marquis de Lafayette on the French Declaration of the Rights of Man. The letters trace how Jefferson’s friendships with Adams and Abigail Adams developed; they reveal all that we really know of his love affair with the artist Maria Cosway; they show his interest in architecture developing and maturing, and they demonstrate his extraordinary skill in diplomacy. Brandt also addresses the question of whether Jefferson’s possible sexual relationship with Sally Hemings began in Paris. “This is a man whose mind grew wings,” Brandt writes, presenting Jefferson as a man no longer possible to idolize, but impossible not to like. LINCOLN'S MEN: How President Lincoln Became Father to an Army and a Nation
by William C. Davis. Condition: UNREAD 1999 Free Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: William C. Davis offers a biography of the relationship between President Lincoln and his Union soldiers--a study based on letters found in more than 600 manuscript collections, some of them private. Lincoln, of course, didn't know his troops personally, but he related to them through his own brief experience in arms (the Black Hawk War) and the duty of his office. The bluecoats, by contrast, all knew about Lincoln, and as Davis shows in this engaging book, viewed him as a kind of father figure. Davis tracks the war chronologically, highlighting events that inspired ordinary soldiers to comment upon their commander in chief, such as his spats with General McClellan, calls for more recruits, and decision to free the slaves. It's impossible to argue that the men were all of one mind; time and again, Davis reveals the diversity of their views. "Thank the Lord for this!" wrote one Ohio private after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Another, however, was downright furious. His colorful opinion--written colloquially and without regard for modern grammar--is characteristic of the best Civil War letter writers: "[It] caused me an hour's hearty laugh, two hours tender cry, four hours big with mad, and I am swearing in all the languages known to Americans and Europeans." On the whole, however, Davis advances a convincing claim that the troops admired Lincoln for the greatness with which we honor him today. [1 copy available]

MRS. KENNEDY GOES ABROAD
by Vibhuti Patel. Intro by John Kenneth Galbraith. Beautiful color paintings by Jacqueline Duheme. Decorated end pages. Condition: Gently pre-read, IF at all, 1998 Artisan hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. No problems, just may be pre-read. Content: This is a wonderful piece of Camelot for the younger generation - and even adults who remember the magic of the White House then will love this book. Jacqueline Kennedy - American icon and inimitable symbol of strength and beauty. Her majestic elegance is captured in this delightful gift book, Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad, by French painter, illustrator, and lifelong friend of the First Lady, Jacqueline Duheme. When President and Mrs. Kennedy traveled to Paris in 1961 Mme Duheme began painting scenes from their historic trip. These intricate miniatures impressed President Kennedy, and so Mme Duheme offered the series as a gift. Delighted, Mrs. Kennedy, who herself always enjoyed painting as a pastime, invited Mme Duheme to visit her at the White House and in Cape Cod. Later, upon Jacqueline's request, Mme Duheme accompanied the First Lady and her sister Princess Lee Radziwill on their diplomatic tour through India and Pakistan via Rome. From a visit with the pope at the Vatican to a walk through Nehru's gardens, from a camel ride in Karachi to lunch with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, Mme Duheme illustrated the unforgettable moments of the trip. Now in Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad, these exquisite watercolors are published for the first time--along with line drawings, photographs from Mme Duheme's collection, and nostalgic text drawn from the recollections and reportage of the time. Also included is an introduction by John Kenneth Galbraith, who was a personal friend of Mrs. Kennedy's and, as ambassador to India, accompanied her on her 1962 trip. Beautifully designed and printed, this intimate portrait is a treasure for all those who appreciate the style and grace of the Kennedy era. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

RUSH TO JUDGMENT: A Critique of the Warren Commission's Inquiry Into the Murders of President John F. Kennedy, Officer J. D. Tippit; and Lee Harvey Oswald (Important New Material Added)
by Mark Lane. Introduction by Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper. Condition: UNREAD, but far from perfect, 1967 Fawcett Crest paperback, first printing. Cover shows edgewear and light creases around top edge. Rubbings along front hinge. Interior is clean and tight but tanning. [There is a lesser copy available, also.] Content: New York lawyer, Mark Lane, wrote this book as a defense brief, of sorts, for Lee Harvey Oswald. and is a classic in the JFK assassination investigation, shows how Americans were lulled by the Warren Commission into believing in the "Lone Nut" theory. Lane did what the Commission didn't: that is, to take seriously those people who went against the Commission's thesis statement. Lane painstakingly re-interviewed those witnesses, and interviewed other witnesses who were not called to testify before the Commission. On this basis, Lane leads us, with great authority, to his conclusion that the Warren Report is, at best, a seriously flawed document, and that there is a great deal of evidence to prove that more than one shooter participated in the murder John F. Kennedy. It is a disturbing conclusion that still reverberates today. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE TRIAL OF LEE HARVEY OSWALD
directed by David Greene. 192 run time (in LP mode). Condition: Very good 1990 Good Times VHS tape from private collection. Tape is in excellent condition, but the box corners show shelfwear. GUARANTEED. Content: Suppose Lee Harvey Oswald had lived to stand trial for the assassination of President Kennedy. This 1977 made-for-TV movie brings this hypothetical scenario to life as a riviting courtroom battle that confronts the controversial questions that still haunt the American public. Did Oswald act alone? Or was there a conspiracy that may have included the involvement of the FBI, CIA and organized crime? Reviewer: "Not only is the movie filmed on location (which alone makes it worth the price), it gives us both sides of the coin - conspiracy and lone gunman theories - in glorious color. Just the thought that if Oswald would have lived to stand trial makes this movie intriguing, even before you watch it. The acting is good, the reenactment of events (the assassination, the killing of Officer J. D. Tippit, etc.) are better than those in Stone's JFK and the thought-provoking innuendos are more than enough to keep one entertained throughout. One note: the names of some of the major witnesses and players in the assassination have been changed for whatever reason, but this does not detract from the drama as it unfolds. All in all, it is a wonderful movie." The movie was written by Robert Thompson and starred Lorne Green, Ben Gazzara, an excellent performance by John Pleshette (as Oswald), Frances McCain, Lawrence Pressman, Marisa Pavan, and William Jordan. Excellent movie! [1 copy available]

THE VELVET GLOVE: A Life of Dolly Madison
by Noel Gerson. Condition: Gently pre-read to page 28 and abandoned, 1975 Thomas Nelson hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition. The color on the jacket is weak and does show a few rubbings as well as a small chip bottom DJ spine. Interior is clean & tight. Content: This is the biography of the woman about whom the term "First Lady" was first applied. She was a gourmet cook, fashion plate, and wit. It was she who saved Stuart's portrait of Washington and priceless documents when the British burned Washington. IMHO, she is one of the most fascinating first ladies in American History - the others being Abigail Adams, Jacqueline Kennedy, and now, Michelle Obama. Good reading and a life well lived.
