ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND MEN OF WAR-TIMES: Some Personal Recollections of War and Politics During the Lincoln Administration
by A. K. McClure. Introduction by James A. Rawley. B&W era photos. Condition: NEW 1996 Bison Books Trade Paperback, fourth edition. Perfect. Content: First published in 1892. An associate of Abraham Lincoln offers an intimate view of the president's relations with military men and top politicians, placing particular emphasis on the election campaigns of 1860 and 1864. A. K. McClure, a Republican powerbroker and later editor of the Philadelphia Times, reveals how Lincoln replaced Vice President Hannibal Hamlin with the Southern Democrat Andrew Johnson on the 1864 ticket. According to McClure, Lincoln kept his hand hidden in order not to offend Hamlin and his New England supporters. In 1892, the publication of Abraham Lincoln and Men of War-Times caused an angry exchange of letters (included in this edition) between McClure and the late president's secretary, John G. Nicolay. APHRODITE DESPERATE MISSION (John Gresham Military Library Selection)
by Jack Olsen. B&W charts illustrate. Introduction by John Gresham. Condition: NEW 2004 ibooks Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Reissue of 1970 edition. Content: Billed as "the only full and complete account of the death of Lt. Joseph Kennedy, Jr., President John F. Kennedy's brother." But this book is more than that. This is the incredible and true story of the World War II top secret mission to destroy Nazi V-2 ballistic rocket bases designed to rain ballistic missile death on London and New York City. Born in desperation and carried out with foolhardy courage and at the cost of brave men's lives, Mission aphrodite was a real-life Guns of Navarone scheme that called for volunteers to guide B-17 drone planes packed with explosives into the Nazi V-2 rocket bases. These missions would lay the groundwork for America's own guided missile program. Joe Kennedy flew one of these planes. [1 copy available]

THE DAY KENNEDY WAS SHOT
by Jim Bishop. Condition: UNREAD 1973 Bantam paperback, third printing. Tiny edgewear with light tanning to interior page edges. Content: Reviewer: "im Bishop is an outstanding writer and his format using hours of the day (i.e., 7:00 am, 8:00 am, etc.) took you to where everyone was at that time--Lee, JFK, the FBI Agent responsibile for Oswald, Jackie, the football, Ruby, etc,. His research was in-depth and made you never question its validity. I lived in Dallas when this event took place, but was too young to know what was happening. Jim Bishop took back to Dallas on that day and gave me more than I ever expected to receive from the book. This book will make you feel like a history buff. His excellent writing ability led me to purchase another of his books--"The Day Lincoln was Shot"--This one is "Ditto". [Note: I was at the Hotel Texas that morning, and Bishop's details, although he certainly knew more than did I, ring true - I like and trust this book. It's everything known in 1973.] [1 copy available]

THE JFK ASSASSINATION: The Facts and the Theories
by Carl Oglesby. Foreword by Norman Mailer. Condition: Pre-read 1992 Signet paperback, first printing. Spine crease with edge wear and light tanning. Content: Reviewer: "First, it must be said that this book is misleadingly packaged. The cover copy promises a disinterested, comprehensive overview of the JFK assassination and all the competing theories of how it happened. Instead, it's a collection of essays, journalism, and reviews spanning two decades, covering the assassination in particular and secret government in general, written by a left-leaning political analyst who presents his own ideas and opinions (except for a truly perfunctory afterword entitled, all-too-aptly, "Round up the Usual Suspects"). As such, however, it is an excellent book. If you've never read Carl Oglesby, you should try him. His work is characterized by laser-like intelligence and crystalline, energetic writing. He is always a pleasure to read. If I had to characterize him in terms of better known writers, I'd call him a cross between Robert Christgau and Renata Adler (in terms of both content -- Christgau for politics, Adler for analytic ability -- and style). This is an ideal starting place. After this, scramble to find a copy of The Yankee and Cowboy War, his major work. For me at least, the lack of a steadily accumulating body of work by Oglesby over the last two decades is a gap in our national intellectual life. With any luck, the Y2K coup will get him writing again." Questions welcome [1 copy available]

AN ORAL HISTORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN:
John G. Nicolay's Interviews and Essays

by John G. Nicolay. Edited by Michael Burlingame. B&W photos. Condition: NEW 1996 Southern Illinois University Press Hardcover & DJ. Tiny "ding" bottom back cover corner. Still shrink-wrapped but will cover DJ in mylar on request. Content: Nicolay had trained as a journalist had known Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, and served in the Lincoln administration as chief White House secretary from 1861 to 1865. He eventually published a ten-volume biography on Lincoln (which he co-wrote with John Hay). As part of the preparation for the biography, Nicolay interviewed those in Springfield and in Washington who had known Lincoln. Now over 100 years later, 39 of those never-before-published interviews appear for the first time. He interviewed such Springfield friends of Lincoln as his first two law partners. At the Illinois capital in 1875, he talked to a number of others, including Orville H. Browning (U. S. Senator and Lincoln's close friend and advisor for over 35 years). Briefer and more narrowly focused than the Springfield interviews, the Washington interviews deal with the formation of Lincoln's cabinet, his relations with Congress, his behavior during the war, his humor, and his grief. Michael Burlingame has done a masterful job in selecting and editing these hidden treasures of first-person narratives on the life and person of Abraham Lincoln. The insights revealed in this book about Lincoln's marriage, his attitudes toward the issues and personalities of the day, and the controversies that continually surrounded his presidency are invaluable. RUSH TO JUDGMENT: A Critique of the Warren Commission's Inquiry Into the Murders of President John F. Kennedy, Officer J. D. Tippit; and Lee Harvey Oswald (Important New Material Added)
by Mark Lane. Introduction by Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper. Condition: UNREAD, but far from perfect, 1967 Fawcett Crest paperback, first printing. Cover shows edgewear and light creases around top edge. Rubbings along front hinge. Interior is clean and tight but tanning. [There is a lesser copy available, also.] Content: New York lawyer, Mark Lane, wrote this book as a defense brief, of sorts, for Lee Harvey Oswald. and is a classic in the JFK assassination investigation, shows how Americans were lulled by the Warren Commission into believing in the "Lone Nut" theory. Lane did what the Commission didn't: that is, to take seriously those people who went against the Commission's thesis statement. Lane painstakingly re-interviewed those witnesses, and interviewed other witnesses who were not called to testify before the Commission. On this basis, Lane leads us, with great authority, to his conclusion that the Warren Report is, at best, a seriously flawed document, and that there is a great deal of evidence to prove that more than one shooter participated in the murder John F. Kennedy. It is a disturbing conclusion that still reverberates today. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE TRIAL OF LEE HARVEY OSWALD
directed by David Greene. 192 run time (in LP mode). Condition: Very good 1990 Good Times VHS tape from private collection. Tape is in excellent condition, but the box corners show shelfwear. GUARANTEED. Content: Suppose Lee Harvey Oswald had lived to stand trial for the assassination of President Kennedy. This 1977 made-for-TV movie brings this hypothetical scenario to life as a riviting courtroom battle that confronts the controversial questions that still haunt the American public. Did Oswald act alone? Or was there a conspiracy that may have included the involvement of the FBI, CIA and organized crime? Reviewer: "Not only is the movie filmed on location (which alone makes it worth the price), it gives us both sides of the coin - conspiracy and lone gunman theories - in glorious color. Just the thought that if Oswald would have lived to stand trial makes this movie intriguing, even before you watch it. The acting is good, the reenactment of events (the assassination, the killing of Officer J. D. Tippit, etc.) are better than those in Stone's JFK and the thought-provoking innuendos are more than enough to keep one entertained throughout. One note: the names of some of the major witnesses and players in the assassination have been changed for whatever reason, but this does not detract from the drama as it unfolds. All in all, it is a wonderful movie." The movie was written by Robert Thompson and starred Lorne Green, Ben Gazzara, an excellent performance by John Pleshette (as Oswald), Frances McCain, Lawrence Pressman, Marisa Pavan, and William Jordan. Excellent movie! [1 copy available]

WHEN I THINK OF BOBBY: A Personal Memoir of the Kennedy Years
by Warren Rogers. B&W photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1994 HarperPerennial Trade Paperback, first printing. Remainder mark bottom edges. Content: On the 25th anniversary of Robert Kennedy's death, syndicated columnist Rogers--an old friend of the Kennedys -- offers a fond, adulatory remembrance of RFK as family man. the author tries ``to capture the essence of the character, curiosity, wit, honesty, and love of family that propelled a remarkable man.'' Rogers vividly depicts a deeply religious man, profoundly devoted to his country, wife, and many children. There's little discussion here of RFK as public man, except for Rogers's certainty that, had he lived, Kennedy would have been elected President in 1968 and would have profoundly altered the course of recent American history. Rogers also presents the human side of Kennedy's rivalry with Teamster president Jimmy Hoffa, showing the two to be strangely similar in many ways, but he doesn't probe into the ways that Kennedy, as as attorney general, pursued organized crime. Though generally lighthearted, the narrative takes melancholy turns with its account of RFK's severe depression after hearing of his brother's death, and with the author's eyewitness description of Kennedy's assassination after winning the 1968 California primary. A simple, affecting tribute, genuinely sentimental without descending into mawkishness. [1 copy available]
