BUILDING THE GREAT PYRAMID (Companion to BBC/Discovery Chanel series)
by Kevin Jackson and Jonathan Stamp. Beautiful color photos & drawings illustrate. Condition: NEW 2003 Firefly Books (UK) softcover, first printing. Tiny edgewear bottom edge. Content: The book looks at the building techniques used to create the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt and its history, both the pyramid's, and the theories about it. Reviewer: "It is 481 feet tall, 756 feet long at its base, and consists of 2.3 million blocks of stone weighing two and a half tons each. One of the mysteries of the Great Pyramid of Giza is: How did the ancient Egyptians, with their primitive technology, build it? Jackson & Stamp assert that the builders were young peasants conscripted into the pharaoh's service-and that, though Herodotus said 100,000 men were needed-in fact, probably no more than 4,000 men completed the job. Realistic computer images show workers cutting stone in the quarry, hauling the huge stones up a ramp and setting them in place. Other color and duotone archival images reveal the inside of the pyramid, including the king's burial chamber and the low-ceilinged main entranceway. The authors put the pyramid in context, discussing ancient Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife in general, and t he funeral rites for the pharaoh in particular. Among the more striking images here is a photo of the mummy of Ramses II, so hardened it appears to be made of stone. This is an excellent beginning for anyone interested in the culture of ancient Egypt and the pyramids." [2 copies available]

CLEOPATRA
by Ernle Bradford Detailed B&W photos & maps. Condition: NEW 2001 Penguin Classic Biography large softcover, first printing. Pale tag removal mark top front cover corner. . Interior perfect. Content: Cleopatra was an intellectual, an astute politician, and a powerful Queen of Egypt, but most people remember her primarily as a seductress. In this illuminating biography, Ernle Bradford suggests that Cleopatra's prurient reputation was likely manufactured by the conquering Romans to discredit her name after her death. Cleopatra's whole life was devoted to Egypt. Even though she was probably Greek, not Egyptian, by birth, she was the first of her dynasty to learn the language of the country over which she ruled. Only seventeen years old when she came to the throne in 51 B.C., she watched the savage struggle then raging between Caesar and Pompey and hoped that Rome would destroy itself in the process. Bradford's detailed exploration of the powers of this legendary queen is captivating and illuminating. [1 copy available]

by Bridget McDermott. Foreword by Joann Gletcher. Beautiful color photos & drawings illustrate. Condition: NEW 2001 Chronicle Books softcover, first printing. Content: McDermott offers the reader a delightfully illustrated introduction to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. Egyptian hieroglyphs are not simple pictographs; they form a phonetic writing system, so some knowledge of grammar and vocabulary is essential to deciphering the texts. DISEASE (Egyptian Bookshelf)
by Joyce Filer. B&W autopsy and other photos. Small color photo section. Condition: NEW 1996 University of Texas Press Trade Paperback first printing. Content: Disease and sickness were among the more unpleasant fact of life in ancient Egypt and Nubia, where many of the illnesses we encounter today, such as tuberculosis, leprosy, and malaria, were already flourishing. Drawing extensively on the evidence provided by human remains, texts, statuary, and other works of art, Joyce Filer describes some of the health problems suffered by king and commoner alike. She examines the case of individuals such as Seneb, an achondroplastic dwarf who achieved high status as a court official during the Old Kingdom, or the young child whose crippling bone disease was revealed by its mummified remains. Dental disease, chest complaints, and parasitic infection from the waters of the Nile were a common part of Egyptian daily life. Set against the background of the ancient Egyptian environment, the author produces a detailed picture of diet and domestic arrangements and of both good and bad health. From the predynastic to the early Christian period, the effects of ill health and the constant threat of infectious disease on the life of the individual is assessed in the wider context of Egyptian society. EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHS FOR EVERYONE: An Introduction to the Writing of Ancient Egypt
by Joseph and Lenore Scott. B&W drawings, photos, and maps illustrate. Condition: NEW 1994 Barnes & Noble hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), fourth priting. [A reissue of a 1968 edtion.] Content: In this book you will learn how hieroglyphic writing can be read. This is not a mere "do-it-yourself" guide to language learning, but rather a careful and engrossing explanation at how the written language of Egyptian hieroglyphs developed. It covers the uses and techniques of this ancient form of communication. Hieroglyphs go back in Egyptian history to at least 3100 B.C.E. "Ancient Egyptians believed that when a person's name was written or carved in stone, the spirit could reside there forever after the individual had died. It was the pathway to life eternal. Destroy a person's name wherever it appeared, and he would no longer exist. His memory, and chance for eternal life, were obliterated. Even gods were subject to the same rule. Some odd twists occurred in Egyptian history pursuing this belief." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

The selections date from the Old Kingdom to medieval times, the majority being based on religious themes. Reviewer: "Virtually every amulet and talisman is covered, along with their proper use and materials they were made from. As always, the introduction and stories Budge gives are fascinating as well, giving tales not generally told in modern times and the various mechanics of how the Egyptian priests and magicians performed their magic. One can see why Budge's work is still in print, as he offers the reader a maximum of research and scholarship with none of the new-age BS that is so common in such books written today." EGYPTIAN RELIGION: Egyptian Ideas of the Future Lilfe
by Sir E. A. Wallis Budge. B&W drawings illustrate. Condition: NEW 1987 Arkana Trade Paperback, 3rd printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: A prolific Victorian Egyptologist explores, in this class book first published in 1899, the position of Ra, Osiris, Set, and Isis among the diverse pantheon of numerous deities of ancient Egypt, as well as their domination of the collective imagination of this sophisticated civilization. Hymns from The Book of the Dead illustrate the beliefs of the Egyptian peoples regarding the afterlife, judgment after death, resurrection, and immortality. The writings of Budge are considered somewhat controversial today because of his use of an archaic system of translation, but useful illustrations and an abundance of information make them necessary resources for students of the ancient world as well as those of the evolution of historical study. Conveying the beauty and power of the religion of ancient Egypt, this fascinating book remains an important work today. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE FACE OF TUTANKHAMUM
by Christopher Frayling. B&W photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1992 Faber and Faber (UK) large soft cover (298 pages), no printing given. Light edge wear with pale diagonal crease bottom front cover corner. Medium size tag removal mark bottom back cover. Interior clean & tight. Content: In a five-part series for the BBC, the author of this book presents the case of King Tut to mark the 70th anniversary of the opening of his tomb. This book uses extracts from the diaries of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter who led the expeditionary team. The staggering wealth of their discovery, and the legend of the curse of the tomb unleashed a worldwide craze for all things Egyptian, and the style invaded our popular culture, influencing everything from the architecture of cinemas to what we saw on the big screen itself. Reviewer: "In this collection of stories ranging from Carter's discovery of the tomb to the abuse the Pharaoh's remains have been subjected to at the time of Professor Derry's autopsy in 1925, Frayling provides a vivid glimpse of the effect it had on popular imagination. The discovery itself has been sufficiently covered in other publications but the societal impact on film and literature is of considerable interest. So is the Forbes' theory about Tutankhamen's death as a result of a crushing injury to the chest. This assumption is, however, unlikely because the absence of the sternum upon which the theory rests, was in all probability a postmortem artifact and resulted from Carter's attempt to free the gold mask (which covered part of the chest) from the consolidated unguents which had been poured over the body in great profusion. On the whole the book makes a nice present for people interested in Tutankhamen." Of course, some of the information is a bit dated, but the history of the tomb and the world-wide fad that accompanied it are still fascinating. [1 copy available]

HATCHEPSUT: The Female Pharoah
by .Joyce Tyldesley. 2 B&W photo sections with B&W drawings throuhout. Condition: Very good + 1996 Viking-Penguin (London) hardcover & DJ first edition, first printing. Book has been gently pre-read and the interior is clean & tight. The DJ has tiny edgewear top spine edge and is enclosed in a mylar jacket. Content: Egyptian Queen Hatchepsut, who died in 1482 B.C. after more than 20 years of peaceful rule, proclaimed herself pharaoh during her reign. She depicted herself, in temple paintings, as a man who hunted, fished and even sported the pharaoh's hallmark false beard. Was she, then, as many historians have speculated, a cross-dresser or merely power-hungry and eager to outshine the half-brother whom she married, King Tuthmosis II? There's absolutely no evidence to suggest she "came out" as a transvestite, concludes English archeologist Tyldesley, and the fact that Hatchepsut retained her female name "suggests that she did not see herself as wholly, or even partially, male." In this highly conjectural biography, Hatchepsut emerges as a conformist queen consort who, once her husband died, blossomed as a pragmatic ruler, bringing Egypt an oasis of stable government. Excellent and detailed. [1 copy available]

THE HERETIC PHARAOH: The Life of Akhenaten
by .Joy Collier. B&W photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1970 Dorset Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Ahkenaten is unique in the 3,000-year history of Ancient Egypt. He stands out not because he was a great or powerfu ruler - he allowed all of Egypt's possessions in what is now Syria to be conquered by the Hittites without raiing a hand and permitted his goernment to be run almost completely by his ministers - but because he was a mystic who in his religious fanaticism devoted his life to promulgating what is possibly the world's oldest example of monotheism. He changed his name from Amenhotep IV, publicly renounced the polytheistic religoin of his ancestors, moved from Thebes and built a new capital at a remote site in the desert. The passion that led h im to take these drastic steps were eventually paralled by a darker one that not only destroyed the religion he worked so harad to establish but contributed to his own downfall. [While this book is out-of-date ini some ares of Akhenaten's life, it is still one of the standards in the history of the Pharaohs and worth reading.] [1 copy available]

THE KEYS OF EGYPT: The Obsession to Decipher Egyptian Hieroglyphs
by .Lesley and Roy Adkins. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 2000 HarperCollins hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Jean-François Champollion's biography is neatly interwoven with Napoleonic history and the functions of Egyptian hieroglyphs in The Keys of Egypt. A gifted bookseller's son born in Revolutionary France, Champollion was to become "gripped by energetic enthusiasm" for Egypt. By the age of 12, he was studying several ancient languages, and, amid a "wave of Egyptomania," he would beat rivals to discover the key to deciphering hieroglyphs. If this was a race, it was a marathon. The breakthrough came after "20 years of obsessive hard work," not through the quick-fix solution often thought to have been provided by the Rosetta stone. The Keys of Egypt details Champollion's life and work, which were hampered by politics, poverty, and an almost hypochondriacal series of health problems. Its sources include letters and journals, the authors having undertaken researches in major libraries and museums. Chapters on Champollion's travels in Italy and Egypt include a good smattering of excerpts from his writings. Although no bibliography is given, there is a helpful passage on various levels of further reading. Highly instructive and fast-paced, The Keys of Egypt is perhaps less dramatic than it might be in portraying troubled times and groundbreaking discovery. It is, however, a clearly expressed and wide-ranging book explaining the complexity of hieroglyphic interpretation and revealing the man whose achievements "meant the discovery of a whole new civilization." Content: The building of the pyramids at Giza, Cleopatra’s momentous meeting with Julius Caesar, the founding of Alexandria, the Battle of Actium stand famously among the scores of critical events that shaped the history of ancient Egypt from 3150 B.C., when the rival kingdoms of the land were first unified, to its conquest by Rome in 30 B.C. In this new Mammoth volume’s variety of firsthand accounts - from papyri, chiseled tablets, court records, temple texts, graffiti, classical Greek and Roman histories - the ancient Egyptian way of life is unfolded in colorful detail with dramatic immediacy. Reconstructing the history of the land ruled by thirty-two dynasties of pharaohs, these selections chronicle in vivid, unforgettable particulars the everyday customs and spiritual life of the people. Here are hymns to victory and songs of love; tales of coronation, conspiracy, and rebellion; accounts of floods and famine; reports on hunting wild cattle and mining in Sinai; prescriptions for contraception and spells for the afterlife; dietary habits and dress codes; trials for tomb robbery and pharaonic punishments for stealing from the gods. Over 150 historical documents in addition to more recent explorations illuminate the civilization that flourished along the Nile in the ancient world. The weakness of this book is in the illustrated Glosary. (519 pages) Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

The MUMMY: A History of the Extraordinary Practices of Ancient Egypt
by E. A. Wallis Budge. 90 B&W line drawings illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read c. 1992 Wings Books/Random House hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 5th printing. Light tanning to page edges. Content: Originally published in 1893 and revised in 1925, this book is still one of the staples of Ancient Egyptian history. This volume exhaustively discusses the details of mummies in Egyptian society. Preservation of the body was the chief end and aim of every Egyptian who wished to attain everlasting life. It is to the cult of the dead, the predominant feature of which was the preservation of the mummy, that we owe most of our knowledge of the Egyptians for a period of about 5,000 years. Egypt lives again through its dead and Budge gives the reader a complete picture of mummies and their history. [1 copy available]

MUMMY: The Inside Story
by John H. Taylor. . Great vivid color graphics & photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2004 Abrams large soft cover, first printing. Content: Utilizing striking images from Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning, this book takes readers through the process of investigating the nearly 3000-year-old mummified remains of Nesperennub. The text describes each step in the examination, looking at the coffin and hieroglyphs first, and then moving to the specifics of the body and the objects that accompany it. Along with descriptions of the process, readers learn what scientists make of the find and why they draw these conclusions. The first few sections about the discovery of the mummy and the meaning of the hieroglyphs are fairly dry, but they set the stage for the more exciting examination of the body and the intriguing details that come to light. CT images and X rays vividly depict the findings described. Often readers see multiple views of the same feature, showing how the three-dimensional images can reveal subtle new insights. Some have led scientists to new knowledge about Egyptian life, while others have given rise to theories that have yet to be confirmed. Nesperennub has a snake-shaped amulet above his eye socket, a small round hole through his skull, and a clay bowl stuck to his head. It's fascinating to learn how scientists speculate about the origins of these items, which might have involved religious practices, illness, or even, in the case of the bowl, an embalmer's error. There are many excellent mummy books available, but this one explores the impact and potential of cutting-edge technology especially well. Excellent! Grades 5 - 9+. [2 copies available]

THE MUMMY CASE: An Amelia Peabody Mystery (Historical Fiction)
by Elizabeth Peters. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2000 Warner Books paperback, reissue, second nprinting. Tiny edge wear with shelf wear "near-crease" and thin binder's glue string down spine. Interior clean & tight. Content: Fun seems to be guaranteed whenever the prolific Peters brings Amelia Peabody (Curse of the Pharaohs, etc.) back for another 19th-century mix of archaeology, comedy, and murder-mystery. This time the Victorian Wonder Woman is in Cairo, where she finds the murdered body of antiquities dealer Abd el Affi - and catches a glimpse of a likely suspect. . . who turns up later as a worker at Nazghunah, site of the latest dig for Amelia and her Egyptologist-husband, handsome and forthright Radcliffe Emerson. Could the presence of a probable killer have a link to someone in the neighborhood? Amelia considers several possibilities: a Frenchman named De Morgan is working at the nearby Pyramids of Dashoor; a menancing Copt priest is in a neighboring village - as is a Christian missionary sect headed by fanatical, unprepossessing Brother Ezekiel (an American); and hovering in the background are a voluptuous Bavarian baroness and a monocled prince. Then, however, Amelia's chief suspect is found dead, strange things are happening with mummy cases. . . and there'll be perilous tangles before Amelia exposes all. But the sleuthing here, as usual, is a minor attraction - as Peters again comes up with witty period ambience, good-naturedly ironic comedy (featuring Amelia's small son Ramses, a lovable monster of towering erudition), and a crisp sense of style that rarely flags. James has drawn on the evidence of paintings and inscriptions from tombs and temples, from official archives, private correspondence, accounts, and dispatches. THE PRIVATE LIVES OF THE PHARAOHS
by Joyce Tyldesley. B&W photo section with time line charts and B&W decorations. Condition: PLEASE READ / UNREAD, but not perfect, 2000 TV Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Edge wear to DJ edges. Content: Egyptian civilization, preserved for two thousand years, left a mysterious legacy in the form of human remains, monumental buildings, inscrutable writings, and elaborate tombs. But until recently, Egyptian mummies were considered to be little more than curiosities. Much of our understanding of Egyptian civilization has been gleaned from nineteenth century tomb robbers and twentieth century filmmakers. This book highlights the exciting new developments in medical science that are allowing Egyptologists to extract information from mummified Egyptians. Recent scientific advances, including DNA analysis, endoscopy, and CAT scans, are allowing Egyptologists to bring Egypt's dead "back to life." The once-hidden evidence extracted from their bones, hair, and rehydrated skin is unlocking the mysteries of the pyramids, showing us the secrets of Tutankahamen's court, and revealing the use of recreational drugs in the royal household. The result is a breathtaking new look at the Pharaohs and their monumental civilization. Renowned Egyptologist Joyce Tyldesley describes the major secrets that forensic scientists have been able to retrieve from Egypt's famed mummies. Questions welcome [1 copy available]

I don't think this book has been read, but it does have spine creases but at the photo inserts. Interior very clean & tight with light tanning to interior page edges. Content: Reviewer: "After his sailing from South America to Easter Island Thor has decided (after his visit to the pyramids in Egypt, where he saw the papyrus boats and after he saw that there were some Egyptian coins and pottery in South America) to make a papyrus boat and sail over Atlantic. He first employed two workers from Chad, where they were seen to make papyrus boats for lakes. They have sailed from egypt but the boat didn't manage to reach the American coast due to construction failure (as it was seen later, the boat was too heavy and they forgot to include the binding rope). Second attempt was made afterwards, this time the builders were Indians and they have constructed lighter boat. This one lasted till they reached American shore and has proven the theory that if Pharaoh has ordered to sail to America, the task could be achieved thanks to knowledge of ocean streams (and they had that knowledge for sure). We won't deprive Columbus for his "discovery" of America for quite some time. After all, he was the first after many years who sailed there where almost forgotten kings once made trade, allies and foes. we are slightly realizing that our ancestors weren't so barbaric and stupid as we thought of them, they were in some views even some steps ahead of us. Can we accept this fact or not?" This is a great true story - and so is Kon-Tiki. I know it's not really ancient history, but . . . [1 copy available]

by Albert Churchward. Intro by Dr. John Henrik Clarke. B&W photos and drawings illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1994 A&B Trade Paperback, second printing. Light edge wear with 3 very pale impressions front cover. Content: Reviewers: "African people developed signs and symbols as a way of communicating and delivering messages. It is most unfortunate that most people who today are members of secret societies have no in-depth knowledge of the history of the society and the unifying role it played in the early intellectual life of the Nile Valley." "In order to gain a true conception of the origin & evolution of Freemasonry, its Signs, Symbols, and all its Rituals & Ceremonies, one must have also a knowledge of the origin & evolution of the Human Race, with all the Totemic Mysteries performed in Sign Language by Primitive Man. The author will teach knowledge of the Periodic Laws of the corpuscles, The Divine Laws of the Universe, for the reader to understand how and why progressive evolution is constantly and for ever taking place to reach that "higher type of Homo." and "Churchward was strait [sic] to the point that civilization came from Africa. UNWRAPPING A MUMMY (Egyptian Bookshelf)
by John H. Taylor. B&W "autopsy" and other photos. Small color photo section. Condition: NEW 1996 University of Texas Press Trade Paperback first printing. Content: Horemkenesi was an Egyptian priest and official who lived at Thebes in the eleventh century B.C. The unwrapping and scientific examination of his mummified body provided a rare opportunity to study the remains of a known historical figure using the most sophisticated technology and methods of analysis. By combining the results of this study with information from inscriptions on Horemkenesi's coffin and rock graffiti recording his work in the cemeteries of Thebes, it is possible to build up a fascinating picture of the life, death, and mummification of an ancient Egyptian. The first part of this book considers Horemkenesi's life and work against the backdrop of Upper Egypt in the troubled times of the early 20th Dynasty. The second part concentrates on the unwrapping of the mummy: its careful planning, how the delicate operation was carried out, and what discoveries were made. What did Horemkenesi look like? How old was he at death? What was the state of his health? Why did the embalmers not remove his brain, and why were his internal organs missing? These and other questions are answered in this stimulating book. [1 copy available]

WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE ON THE BANKS OF THE NILE: Egypt 3050 - 30 BC
by Editors of Time Life. Beautiful color photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Time Life large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Content: This book relies on hieroglyphics, charms, paintings, and even written prayers to re-create what life was like in the land of the pyramids. Rather than attempt to summarize the entire history of Egypt, the chapters focus on personal accounts of specific people who have been dead for thousands of years. For example, in 2002 B.C., a farmer named Hekanakht was sent away from his family to fulfill ceremonial and administrative duties. Through his letters home, readers learn of his struggles to settle domestic squabbles and maintain his farm from afar. Accounts of pharaohs, warriors, and commoners are included. Much emphasis is given to the role of women. These primary-source documents create a moving and immediate picture of these ancient people. Full-color photos work well with the text, showing carvings, sculpture, and portraits of the Egyptians whose stories are told along with artifacts relating to their lives. The text is meaty; nonreaders scared off by the adult format will miss the best part-reconfiguring in their imaginations the past as its participants described it. The best use of this book may be by teachers to supplement a study unit with succinct, shared passages transcribed from the past. A fascinating volume that can't help but make readers wonder if human emotions will survive as well on paper and e-mail as these amazing messages have done in clay and stone. Grades 7 through adult. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
