AUGUSTUS (Ancient culture and Society series)
by A. H. M. Jones. B&W map section. Condition: UNREAD 1971 Norton Trade Paperback Edition, printing given is "0" - apx. 1990s? Remainder bottom edges. Content: Reviewer: "This book is a little dry and bland, yet it is also valuably thorough and complete. The first few chapters detail the upbringing and rise of Octavian (later Augustus) through politics and service to Rome under the banner of his adopted father, Caesar. The next chapters detail the governmental and constitutional process by which he gradually assumed absolute power over Rome in a way that seems to conform with Roman constitutional precepts. Jones does a good job of painting a portrait of Augustus from Julius Caesar's death to Augustus's own death. What Jones reveals is that Augustus was a wise ruler who tried to conceal his absolute power by putting on the trappings of a Republic, a man who prevented people from worshipping him while he was alive to prevent resentment from the nobles. Jones also shows how Augustus played a part in the great boom of literature and art during his reign (Livy, Horace, Virgil, and Ovid all lived during Augustus's reign). Although his cautious nature prevented him from being a great military leader like his adoptive father, he nonetheless ended many civil wars that plagued the empire before his arrival." BIOGRAPHICAL DISCTIONARY OF ANCIENT GREEK & ROMAN WOMEN
Notable Women From Sappho to Helen

by Marjorie Lightman & Benjamin Lightman. B&W illustrations. Condition: NEW 1999 Checkmark large soft cover, first printing. Content: Biographical sketches for 447 women living throughout the Greek and Roman worlds from the seventh century B.C.E. to early fourth century C.E. are presented in this volume. The work is intended for all interested readers and is suitable for both popular and scholarly interests. The purpose is to expand the "understanding of circumstances that shaped a woman and her life" in antiquity. Content is organized alphabetically by the names most commonly used in ancient literature, then chronologically in the case of similarly named subjects. Subjects include the familiar, such as Aspasia, Boadicea, and Sappho, and the lesser known, such as the Arete (fifth-fourth century B.C.E.), a Greek philosopher; and Marcia (first century B.C.E.), wife of Cato the Younger. Entries include the subject's name(s), dates (if known), cultural identity, home, description, citations to source material, and cross-references. Length ranges from a few lines (e.g., Cleito) to several pages (e.g., Cleopatra VII). This is an excellent work, providing not only information about the lives of individual women but broad insight into the circumstances surrounding their lives. Much of the information it contains is unique and not included in other reference sources on the Greek and Roman world. Recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries. CITY: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction
by David Macaulay. B&W line drawings illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1975 Houghton Mifflin over-size softcover [11.9 x 9.3 x 0.4], no edition given. Light tanning to white cover edges, but not to interior pages, small edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Detailed drawings. Content: Reviewer: "David Macaulay's works are always entertaining, educational and literate, and this is no exception. A multitude of black-and-white line drawings illustrate the story of Roman urban planners as they design and construct a new city on the Roman empire's frontier. Every stage is explained thoroughly using text, illustrations and charts, from developing a master plan through construction. Tools are explained, cross-sections are used to good effect and specific projects such as a house, a road, a bridge and aqueduct, the forum and central market, public baths, the sewer system and an amphitheater and theater are represented. The book ends with a one-page glossary. If you or a student you know is interested in Roman engineering [or Roman history], this would be a marvelous book to give." Recommended for ages 9 - 11, but I think it's a bit too detailed and is probably better for ages 13 +. [1 copy available]

THE CIVIL WAR
by Lucan. Translated by Nicholas Rowe. Edited by Sarah Brown and Charles Martindale. Cover art: Caesar before Alexandria by Gianantonio Pellegrini. B&W illustrations. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Everyman Trade Paperback, no printing given. Content: Marcus Annaeus Lucanus was born in Spain in C.E. 39 and was the nephew of Seneca the Younger. This is Lucan's only surviving work and is a sweeping historical epic about the civil wars between Pompey and Caesar, written in 10 books, which both Shelley and Macauley admired.. Reviewer: "The epic was written during the reign of Nero in the first century AD, and it is characterized by its vehement condemnation of civil war and imperialistic sentiments--this possibly caused Lucan's later fall out of Nero's favor. The primary characters in the epic are Julius Caesar, who is portrayed as a destructive warmonger, and Pompey (Magnus), who is described as ambitious and over his prime. The vivid descriptions of the wars in this work are exciting and at the same time sobering since Lucan's narrative never fails to reveal those attributes of civil war which invoke the most disturbing of feelings. For all this, Lucan's "Civil War" is recommended, and also because the Oxford World Classics always present reliable translations, and this particular edition retains Lucan's charming and long-winded verse that courses so smoothly through the hearts and minds reader's who are fortunate enough to come into contact with it. COOKERY AND DINING IN IMPERIAL ROME: A Bibliography, Critical Review and Translation of the Ancient Book Known as Apicus de re Coquinaria
by Apicius. Edited & translated by Joseph Dommers Vehling. 49 B&W illustrations. Condition: NEW 1997 Dover Trade Paper edition, no printing given . Most likely printed in c. late 1990s or early 2000s. Tiny edge wear. Content: Oldest known cookbook in existence offers readers a clear picture of what foods Romans ate, how they prepared them. Actual recipes—from fig fed pork and salt fish balls in wine sauce to pumpkin Alexander style, nut custard turnovers and rose pie. Reviewer: "What I find most praiseworthy about this book is Dommers Vehling's obvious interest in gastronomy in general and in ancient cookery in particular. He makes a fairly honest attempt to fill in some of the background for the reader. And although he may be guilty of having his own point of view, we must remember that he was writing over sixty years ago. Dommers also gives the Latin names of the recipes, makes comments on many of them and makes references to other translations." [1 copy available]

by Agnes Carr Vaughan. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1995 Barnes & Noble hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Name loose end page. Content: Originally published c. 1965, this is still a history classic. Nearly 1000 years befoe the founding of Rome, a great civilization flourished in central Italy between the Tiber and Arno Rivers. Its origins were clouded in mystery. Were its people, as Heredotus claimed, invaders from elsewehre in the Mediterranean - perhaps even pirates? Or were they ancient natives of the Italian peninsula, as the philosopher Dionysys suggested? And what is the exact significance of the huge man-made, earthen mounds which stud the landscape of this region, Etruria? ". . .a golden race of mortal men. . . GLADIATOR
by Richard Watkins. Excellent, historically correct charcoal illustrtions by the Author. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Houghton Mifflin hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Light edge wear to DJ edges (shelf wear). Content: The rectangular picture-book format is perfect for a book that describes the incredibly long history of the Roman games. In Watkins's dramatic and realistic charcoal-and-pencil drawings, placed against stark white pages, readers see the bizarre equipment of the gladiators, the exotic animals brought to the arenas, and the complex architecture and advanced technology involved in the construction of the great amphitheaters of the Roman Empire. The 12 brief chapters nicely balance the pictures with amazing facts about the 7 centuries of official arena shows. The horror of blood sports is not shown in the precisely detailed drawings but lies in the statistical information about the numbers of victims and the long popularity of death-centered entertainments. Watkins's research in recent and scholarly books of history reveals the political uses of the games, the central role of the hundreds of amphitheaters throughout the Empire, and the reluctance of both people and government to give up the games. The glamour of the gladiators as superheroes will draw readers to learn about the contests, the weapons, the bloodshed, and the inhumanity of a culture that for centuries celebrated death as public sport. Watkins handles a difficult subject well, stressing the games as so fixed in the history and politics of the Roman world that reminders of their long duration can be seen today. If any single title can turn sports-minded young people into students of history, this is the book to do it. Grades 7-9+. [1 copy available]

THE IDES OF MARCH (Historical Fiction)
by Thornton Wilder (Our Town). Condition: Gently pre-read, IF at all, 1950 Harper & Brothers Trade Paperback, no printing given. Binder's glue strings down spine with edge wear. This is is a brilliant epistolary novel set in Julius Caesar's Rome. Thornton Wilder called it "a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic." Through vividly imagined letters and documents, Wilder brings to life a dramatic period of world history and one of history's most magnetic, elusive personalities. In this inventive narrative, the Caesar of history becomes Caesar the human being. Wilder also resurrects the controversial figures surrounding Caesar -- Cleopatra, Catullus, Cicero, and others. IMPERIAL EXITS: Being An Account of the Varied and Violent Deaths of the Roman Emperors
by Julius Cicatrix and Martin Rowson. Hilarious B&W illustrations - but no credit given. Condition: UNREAD 1996 St. Martin's hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first U.S. edition, first printing. Content: "This is a viciously vile realization of the untimely ends of some of the great names of imperial Rome." Reviewer: "It is interesting to see all the intrigues of leadership in ancient Rome. Being emperor, while thought to be a cushy arrangement, was actually one of the most dangerous jobs at the time. Needless to say, most people didn't hang on to the position for long. Intra-family murders and marriages, poisonings, insanity, cowardice, conceit, and sheer incompetence led to the early demise of most Roman rulers. The illustrations that accompany each account are absolutely hilarious! Recommended reading for anyone who has an interest in ancient Roman history. Excellent way to spend an afternoon. OVID'S HEROINES; A Verse Translation of the Heroides
by Daryl Hine. Condition: UNREAD 1992 Yale Univ. Press Trade Paperback, first printing. Light rubbings hinges. Interior perfect. Content: The "Heroides", written by Ovid some 2000 years ago, consists of a series of imaginary letters by legendary females of antiquity to their hapless lovers or husbands. The verse letters - purportedly penned by such heroines as Helen, Medea, Penelope, Dido, and Sappho - are the outpourings of women who have been cruelly victimized, yet they are written in the witty and ironic tone for which Ovid is famous. As a source of inspiration for other poets, as a model for the episotolary novel and the dramatic monologue, and as feminine footnotes to Greek prehistory, the letters have fascinated readers from Ovid's time to the present. The "Heroides" is now available in a verse translation written by the poet Daryl Hine. His rhymed couplets convey Ovid's unmistakable voice, by turns frivolous and pathetic, learned and racy. Each of the 21 letters (18 by women and 3 by thier lovers) is preceded by a translator's note identifying the writer and her lover and sketching the relevant background. A chronological rearrangement of the poems, to accord with mythological time, is intended to enhance their value as a companion to any reading of classical literature and mythology. ROMAN ART (Universe History of Art Series)
by Helga Von Heintze. B&W photos with some color photos. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1979 Universe hardcover (DJ missing), no printing given. There is a strange impression top of the first 5 pages. No idea what it is. Not bad, but there. Content: Reviewer: "The author profiles the development of Roman architecture, relief sculpture, paintings and mosaics, statues, and portrait s culpture from Etruscan times to the end of the fourth century A.D. Her discussion is limited to the art forms just mentioned; therefore, additional art-related topics such as jewelry, pottery, and coins are not within the scope of this book. Rather than delineate the chapters by historical period, von Heintze dedicates each chapter to a specific art form and then proceeds to discuss the evolution of that art form in time. As a valuable aid to the reader, the book includes 192 illustrations (14 of these in color) of Roman artwork with excellent profiles of each. The text itself is concise and parallels art technique with historical developments very well. In addition, the author balances her discussions of Roman historical periods according to the degree of artistic activity in each period and surviving pieces of art. Therefore, the reader will expect more extensive coverage of artistic production during the 200 years or so of the Pax Romana. "Roman Art" served its purpose of bringing to a full circle my understanding and knowledge of ancient Roman civilization and its legacy in today's Western culture. Questions welcome. ROMAN BRITAIN (British Museum Book)
by T. W. Potter. Beautiful color photos plus B&W photos and drawings. Condition: NEW 1997 Harvard University Press softcover, second edition, first printing. Content: In AD 43 the emperor Claudius ordered an army of 40,000 to invade Britain. In AD 410 the emperor Honorius informed the population of Britain that they now had to defend themselves; there was no longer any Roman army to protect them, nor a Roman authority to administer the country. The four centuries during which the Roman presence in Britain rose, flourished, and then declined changed every aspect of life. Industry, trade, government, the arts and learning--even the physical appearance of the country--were all revolutionized, and the effects are still apparent nearly 2000 years later. This revised and updated edition of "Roman Britain" outlines with clarity and authority this critical period of history, and illustrates it fully with pictures of the surviving objects of the period, largely from the incomparable collections of the British Museum. ROMAN CIVILIZATION SOURCE BOOK II: THE EMPIRE
edited with Introduction and Notes by Naphtali Lewis & Meyer Reinhold. Condition: Pre-read 1988 Harper large Trade Paperback (652 pages), 24th printing. Spine crease with edge wear and moderate tanning to page edges. Some underlining and highlighting. Content: The editors havae translated some two hundred selections hitherto unavailable in English which recreates a documentary picture of a world state so vast and so rich in achievement and documentation as the Roman Empire. This anthology of original sources contains excerpts both from classical historians (generally writing during the early Empire) and from letters, monuments, governmental decrees, laws and inscriptions. This isn't an introduction to Roman Civilization: the editorial comments help set the context but you need to know the political history and the geography in broad outline already, or be learning it as you read this book. The selections fill in the details, and give you some sense of how the Romans and their subject peoples of various periods throughout Rome's hundreds of years of history thought of themselves and their times, on matters of foreign and domestic policy, social order, religion, and Rome's place in the world. ROMAN SOCIETY IN THE LAST CENTURY OF THE WESTERN EMPIRE

Edge wear with pale spine crease. There is no tanning to interior pages. Several pages show underlining. Content: This is a dramatic reconstruction of the religious and intellectual life of the Roman Empire during the dying days of paganism. Dill recounts the conflicts of paganism with Christianity, indicates the reasons why paganism fought so bitterly to survive, and suggests the reasons why Christianity was ultimately triuimphant. For 2500 years it lay buried under silt and mud, until a team from the University of Philadelphia began an eight-year search for the site. This is the story of that search - an exciting documentary of an archaeological investigation using sophisticated techniques and equipment. It is also a fascinating pen-picture of the city and its Greek colonist inhabitants. The site was discovered in December of 1968. (1 copy available)

SENECA IN ENGLISH
edited by Don Share. Tranlations by various persons. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1998 Penguin Classics Trade Paperback, first printing. Light tanning to page edges. Content: Envied by Caligula, exiled by Claudius, and finally executed by his pupil Nero, the playwright and philosopher Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BC - AD 65) wrote in a violent, epigrammatic and extreme style which has often seemed excessive to those living in calmer times. Like his plays, the life of Seneca contains the dramatic elements of modern tragedy. Shakespeare adapted Senecan principles in his plays, and Seneca's works were imitated by a wide range of later writers. This superb selection of translations, adaptations, and variations--from the 1550s to the 1990s--vividly demonstrates Seneca's continuing presence in English drama and poetry. Questions welcome. THE TWELVE CAESARS
by Michael Grant. B&W photo section. Condition: Gently pre-read to page 108 & abandoned 1997 Phoenix Trade Papaerback, no printing given. One dog earred page tip. Content: The personalities of the Twelve Caesars of ancient Rome - Julius Caesar and the first eleven Roman emperors to follow him - had a profound influence upon the world. Grant penetrates the fog of superstition and rumour that has gathered around these astonishingly powerful men who governed an empire comparable in its magnitude and diversity to the United States or the former Soviet Union. Using original documents - inscription, papyri, buildings, works of art and coins - the author investigates how the Caesars wielded such vast might, how they coped or failed to cope with their task, and considers the effects their intensely demanding public careers had on their private lives.
