BECOMING A TIGER: How Baby Animals Learn to Live in the Wild
by Susan McCarthy. Condition: UNREAD 2004 HarperCollins hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Remainder mark bottom edges. Content: Reviewer: "Becoming a Tiger is really about animal behavior of all sorts, instinctual as well as learned, that of adult animals as well as of young. The book is completely understandable picked up anywhere and with no knowledge of what came before or interest in what comes after. What McCarthy has done is given us a series of short animal behavior stories taken from scientific literature but run through her considerable wit and sprightly -- even sassy -- literary style. The author has a thesis of sorts, but the true message of this book is that anyone who believes animal behavior to be simplistic or consistent across species is ridiculously mistaken and that no one will ever go broke betting on the complexity of the natural world." CATS IN BOOKS: A Celebration of Cat Illustration Through the Ages
selected by Rodney Dale. Beautiful era color and B&W photos and drawings. Condition: NEW 1997 Harry Abrams hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), assumed first printing. Content: Dale shows his cat-loving credentials right from the start -- and why not? "Pussydom," as he puts it, is a marvelous thing, and artists have long been inspired by feline grace and danger (his first example being a stalking, elongated beast from the 8th-century Lindisfarne Gospels). Dale's high-gloss survey packs in fine art from da Vinci and Dürer as well as some startling children's book illustrations. It also extends to this century's ailurophiles, from Dr. Seuss's skinny troublemaker to Ronald Searle's chubbies to B. Kliban's none-too-slim smart alec. And the author manages to include a surprising amount of fact amid this quadruped fancy. Here he is, for example, on Cardinal Richelieu: "It is, perhaps, disappointing to learn that, as soon as his current set of kittens started to grow up and lose their playfulness, the careworn cardinal pensioned them off and sent for some new ones." This is a wonderful book and a great gift item. [1 copy available]

A CHORUS OF BUFFALO: A Personal Portrait Of An American Icon
by Ruth Rudner. Beautiful cover photo by David Meunch. Condition: NEW 2003 Marlowe Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Contrary to popular belief, the American buffalo is not extinct - but it is in trouble. In this passionate volume, Rudner mixes lyrical anecdotes and meditative essays to explore the buffalo's fragile existence, its uncertain future and the politics swirling around the iconic animal. Because buffalo sometimes carry brucellosis, a bovine disease that can cause incurable, debilitating undulant fever in humans and irregular fertility in cattle - and because ranchers are required to kill off entire cattle herds at the first sign of it - the roaming rights of buffalo occupy a central place in Western agricultural politics. Traveling across bison country, Rudner interviews the interested parties, watches the buffalo roam and weighs the merits of all sides. In the end, she comes down on the side of those environmental groups and private citizens who want public lands to be made available to free-ranging bison. Ranchers' fears, she argues, are exaggerated; indeed, there is no known instance of brucellosis transmission from wild buffalo to grazing domestic cattle. Rudner's reverence for the magnificent creature shines through her descriptions of firsthand encounters - on the Dakota prairie, in Yellowstone backcountry, on a Chippewa/Cree reservation (where only five buffalo remain) and on a Sioux reservation (where a thriving herd of more than 400 buffalo live). Throughout, she evenhandedly considers the often-conflicting views of environmentalists, ranchers, park rangers, biologists, animal rights groups, Indians who eat buffalo meat and backpackers who, like herself, view the buffalo as a living link to nature's wildness. THE FAITHFUL ELEPHANTS: A True Story of Animals, People and War
translated from the Japanese by Tomoko Tsuchiya Dykes. Color illustrations by Ted Lewin. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Trumpet soft cover, first printing. Content: This book has a true message about war - but is a heart-rending, gut-wrenching story for people who love animals and don't watch them eating each other on Animal Planet. A zookeeper narrates the story of how there came to be graves at the zoo: when Tokyo was showered with bombs during the bleak days of World War II, the authorities feared that if the zoo were destroyed, the animals might accidentally be freed and wreak havoc on the city. So they decided that all the zoo animals would be killed. But the elephants wouldn't eat the poisonous food they were offered, and the needles in the syringes containing poison broke before they could penetrate the elephants' rough skin. So the elephants were starved to death, a slow and painful process watched by the zookeepers who loved them. An upsetting story for children or adults, this powerfully conveys the deadly side effects of war. Lewin's watercolors show the massive gray bodies in their state of decline; it is impossible not to appreciate the heartbreak of the animals' plight. But this is a book that provokes questions about the nature of death and dying (children may read into this that some may be killed for the greater good of all), and so should be chosen with care. All ages. [NOTE: The Japanese version of this book states that to show the people of Japan that in this war, people would have to be ready to sacrifice anything for their country. If it was necessary, the lives of animals or even other people would have to be given up for the good of Japan. The US version does not include this tidbit.} Questions welcome. [1 copy only]

GHOSTS OF TSAVO: Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africa
And THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS movie (VHS)

by Philip Caputo. B&W and color photo section. . Condition: NEW 2002 National Geographic hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Although the 1996 movie was based on Patterson's own account of the lion incident, this book helps with the understanding of the "incident" and the real maneless lions of Tsavo. In 1898, two maneless male lions killed and devoured 135 Indian and African workers constructing a railroad bridge over the Tsavo River in Kenya. It took Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson, the engineer in charge of the project, nine months to hunt and kill the beasts, an ordeal recounted in his 1907 book, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, and later the subject of two films, 1952's Bwana Devil and 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness. A century later, the story of Ghost and Darkness still fascinates and terrifies. Were they just rogue lions, or were they the "missing genetic link" between the prehistoric cave cats who hunted early humans and the modern African lion? Caputo seeks answers to this intriguing question as he accompanies two separate expeditions to study the maneless lions of Tsavo. Read the book; see the movie; take your heart medication! The 1996 movie was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred the great Val Kilmer, Michael Douglas, Tom Wilkinson, John Kani, Bernard Hill, and the great African actor Henry Cele. Not to be missed! GOOD NATURED: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals
by Frans De Waal. Three B&W photo sections. Condition: NEW 1996 Harvard University Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Content: Frans de Waal, ethologist and primatologist, asks us to reconsider human morality in light of moral aspects that can be identified in animals. Within the complex negotiations of human society, a moral action may involve thoughts and feelings of guilt, reciprocity, obligation, expectations, rules, or community concern. De Waal finds these aspects of morality prevalent in other animal societies, mostly primate, and suggests that the two philosophical camps supporting nature and nurture may have to be disbanded in order to adequately understand human morality. A theoretician, de Waal is meticulous in his research, cautious not to extrapolate too much from his findings, and logically sound in his arguments. He also writes with precision and a flair for the dramatic, carrying readers along with graceful ease and vivid examples. One of the most interesting and endearing sections in on a baby rhesus born retarded of an older mother and how the other members of her "family" take turns caring for her. [1 copy available]

GORILLAS IN THE MIST
by Dian Fossey. Three B&W photo sections. B&W drawings by Jay Matternas. Sigourney Weaver movie still front cover. Condition: UNREAD 1988 Houghton Mifflin Trade Paperback, movie edition. Tiny edgewear. Content: In 1963, an occupational therapist from Kentucky, in uncertain health and spirits, traveled to central Africa in the quixotic hope of seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. Dian Fossey had read everything she could about the reclusive and much-feared animal, and she returned from her trip convinced that most of the books were wrong. During her seven-week stay in Africa, Fossey had a chance encounter with the famed primatologists Mary and Louis Leakey, who encouraged her to follow her dream of living among the mountain gorillas and learning their ways. In 1967 she did just that, setting up a camp on the slopes of the 14,000-foot Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and studying four gorilla families there. Although it took them some time to accept Fossey's presence among them, she was immediately impressed by their peaceful nature and by their generous, guileless behavior--so unlike the images found in popular culture. But, Fossey discovered, despite their peaceable way of life, the gorillas had many enemies in the form of poachers who hunted them for their hands, skins, and heads--ghastly remains sold to the tourist market. Much of Fossey's thoughtful but often rightly angry memoir Gorillas in the Mist is a well-reasoned plea for the protection of the gorillas and the suppression of the poachers' black market. That argument found a wide audience when her book was published in 1983, but Fossey's work remains unfinished: she was murdered, probably by those very poachers, in 1985, and today there are fewer than 650 mountain gorillas in the wild. To read this book is a first step for anyone concerned with their preservation, and that of other wild species everywhere. The wonderful 1988 movie was directed by Michael Apted and starred Sigourney Weaver, Bryan Brown, Julie Harris, John Omirah Miluwi, Iain Cuthbertson, & Gordon Masten. A classic - both the book & the movie. [1 copy available]

A GUIDE TO THE CARNIVORES OF CENTRAL AMERICA: Natural History, Ecology, & Conservation
by Carlos L. De La Rosa and Claudia C. Nocke. Wonderful B&W drawings of the animals & maps. Condition: NEW 2000 University of Texas Press Trade Papaerback, first edition, first printing. Content: Carnivores such as pumas, jaguars, and ocelots have roamed the neotropical forests of Central America for millennia. Enshrined in the myths of the ancient Maya, they still inspire awe in the region's current inhabitants, as well as in the ecotourists and researchers who come to experience Central America's diverse and increasingly endangered natural environment. This book is one of the first field guides dedicated to the carnivores of Central America. It describes the four indigenous families -- wild cats, raccoons and their relatives, skunks and their relatives, and wild canids -- and their individual species that live in the region. The authors introduce each species by recounting a first-person encounter with it, followed by concise explanations of its taxonomy, scientific name, English and Spanish common names, habitat, natural history, and conservation status. Range maps show the animal's past and current distribution, while Claudia Nocke's black-and-white drawings portray it visually. The concluding chapter looks to the carnivores' future, including threats posed by habitat destruction and other human activities, and describes some current conservation programs. Designed for citizens of and visitors to Central America, as well as specialists, this book offers an excellent introduction to a group of fascinating, threatened, and still imperfectly understood animals. HEN'S TEETH AND HORSE'S TOES: Further Reflections in Natural History
by Stephen Jay Gould. B&W illustrations & photos. Condition: NEW 1982 W. W. Norton paperback, first printing. Pale tanning to white cover edges, but none to interior pages (excellent paper!). Content: What color is a zebra? Does the changing size of a Hershey bar hold a lesson of adaptive significance? Did an asteroid bring mass extinction to the earth 65 million years ago? Why do animals walk, fly, swim and slither but never roll? Human beings not withstanding, why are the females of most species larger than the males? Behind each question and each answer lie concepts central to science and in particular to an understanding of evolution, the centerpiece of biology. Science is the art of the doable, and the science of evolutionary biology has changed our view of the world. It is important to remember that natural selection is not a perfecting principle, but a means of making sense of our earth as we find it today. [1 copy available]

HIGGLETY PIGGLETY POP! Or There Must Be More to Life
text & illustrations by Maurice Sendak. B&W illustrations are pen & ink Condition: Unread 1979 Harper & Row softcover, first PB printing. Small edgewear-shelfwear. Content: Weird and original and delightful. As a tribute to his dearly departed pooch, Maurice Sendak wrote this odd little tale in 1967 about Jennie, a Sealyham terrier who is not content with having everything but must go out in the world to find something she doesn't have. Right off the bat, she comes across a pig wearing sandwich boards advertising the need for a leading lady in the World Mother Goose Theatre. Jennie leaps at the opportunity. Unfortunately, the position requires someone with experience, so she sets off to find it. One hungry lion and a stubborn un-hungry baby later, Jennie definitely has experience, if nothing else anymore, and off she goes to play the leading role in a nursery-rhyme-turned-theatrical-production: Higglety-pigglety pop! The dog has eaten the mop!, The pig's in a hurry. The cat's in a flurry. Higglety-pigglety pop! This dreamy, slightly dark story, illustrated in Sendak's renowned pen-and-ink style, tells of a gluttonous dog's transformation from someone who cares only about her next salami sandwich to one who would risk her life for a weaker being (while still wondering where that next sandwich is coming from). (Ages 5 to 9). Don't let the age designation fool you. This is for everyone who loves dogs - especially terriers. Great book! [1 copy available]

LAST CHANCE TO SEE
by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. Color photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Ballantine Trade Paperback edition, 19th printing. Pale tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "Douglas Adams' sense of humour is so strong, it could inject a bucketful of laughs into an obituary. Needless to say I wasn't surprised when this book, his elegy for endangered species, turned out to have a welcome balance between laughter and melancholy. Adams is joined by zoologist Mark Carwardine, as they use their last chance to see a variety of animals on the brink of extinction, such as the Komodo Dragon, the White Rhinos of Zaire, New Zealand kakapos, and Yangtze river dolphins. Adams, amateur wildlife lover, is wise enough to know the purpose of his journey: to shine some of the glare from his celebrity as a "science-fiction comedy novelist" on the issue of global extinction. He does wisely not to downplay the plight of these animals in the favour of commerciality, but manages to produce an entertaining work nonetheless. Carwardine, and the other people we encounter, sometimes come off as little more than characters in a Douglas Adams novel. Nonetheless, the characters' eccentricities further shed light on the kinds of people who are willing to undertake the monumental task of saving these beautiful beasts. It is not work for the dispassionate." Think of this as the Hitchhiker's Guide to Endangered Species. [1 copy available]

LOOKING FOR SEABIRDS: Journal from an Alaskan Voyage
text & illustrations by Sophie Webb. Beautiful color maps and watercolor graphics of the birds. Condition: NEW 2004 Houghton Mifflin hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: The natural history diarist who earned a Sibert Honor for My Season with Penguins: An Antarctic Journal now invites readers to join her aboard the Alpha Helix, a research vessel, on a month-long expedition to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. She is there to count seabirds, whose population density can help researchers gauge the ocean's health. The birds involved here probably won't garner the same instant enthusiasm among young children as waddling, tuxedoed penguins, and Webb's shipboard vantage point precludes the hands-on interactions that enlivened her first book. However, the text and accompanying watercolors are just as brimming with gritty details (it's wise not to serve spherical foods on a boat, because they roll off the plate), and children will feel Webb's delight in the moments that make the rigors of field research worth it: a glimpse of Crested Auklets "like something out of Dr. Seuss' imagination" or an albatross that commutes from Hawaii to Alaska to collect food, then backtracks 5,600 miles to nourish its waiting chicks. THE RAPTOR AND THE LAMB: Predators and Prey in the Living World
by Christopher McGowan. Great B&W drawings by Abigail Rorer. Condition: NEW 1998 Henry Holt & Company hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). Perfect condition. Content: "Most animals are either eaten or eat other animals," writes zoologist Christopher McGowan. "Plants, t oo, are often consumed by animals. Consequently the chances of being devoured, or of eating some other organism in order to survive, are exceedingly high." McGowan looks at several kinds of predator-prey relationships, examining such creatures as the supposedly rapacious crocodile (a surprisingly light eater, when all the facts are in), the big cats (whose prey usually outweighs them but cannot compete with a lion's or tiger's explosive force), and a host of snakes, spiders, and insects. THE SOUL OF THE WOLF
by Michael W. Fox. B&W photos througout. Condition: UNREAD 1980 Little, Brown hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. DJ shows light edge wear. Content: A beautiful look at the wolf and his life style from a man who lived with them in the wild. Reviewer: "In contrast to the average unthinking selfish denizen of the modern world, who tacitly agrees to the prevailing evil, and who seemingly couldn't care less about the sufferings of animals, Fox comes over not merely as a concerned and compassionate figure, but as a truly saintly person. He has lived with wolves. He has seen very deeply into their nature. He respects them as fellow creatures with whom we have many things in common, but who at the same time are vastly superior to us in many respects. And he has understood, of course, that they too have a soul. His book is at one and the same time both inspiring and profoundly saddening. We are inspired by the marvel that is the wolf; we are sickened at modern man's treatment of this fellow creature." Stop the slaughter! Make a little room for wolves. [1 copy available]
