ARCHAIC AND CLASSICAL GREEK ART (Oxford History of Art series)
by Robin Osborne. Wonderful color photos & maps with some B&W drawings. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Oxford University Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Although very light, the book has had some "shelf wear handling." Content: This fascinating new account of what happened in Greece from c.800 to 323 bc shows how sculptors and painters responded to the challenges they faced in the extremely formidable and ambitious world of the Greek city-state. The numerous symbols and images employed by their eastern Mediterranean neighbours on the one hand, and the explorations of what it was to be human embodied in the narratives with which Greek poets worked on the other, helped produce the rich diversity of forms apparent in Greek art. The drawings and sculptures of this period referred so intimately to the human form as to lead both ancient and modern theorists to talk in terms of the 'mimetic' role of art. The importance of what occurred still affects the way we see today. Ranging widely over the fields of sculpture, vase painting and the minor arts, this book provides a clear introduction to the art of archaic and classical Greece. By looking closely at the context in which and for which sculptures and paintings were produced, Robin Osborne demonstrates how artistic developments were both a product of, and contributed to, the intensely competitive life of the Greek city. CELTIC ART: The Methods of Construction
by George Bain. B&W line drawings & photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 1973 Dover softcover edition, no printing given. I'm sure this is a much later printing thatn 1973 - the condition of the book is too good for that date. But who knows. Tiny edgewear top cover edge. Content: Reviewer: "This is a good introduction to Celtic Art and patterns, plus he covers its history and shows you how to even difficult patterns. Drawing Celtic Artwork is not easy, a gifted artist and craftsman Bain makes it look easy but its not. Howeverf if you practice the basic patterns you can get pretty good at it in a reasonable period of time. I have several of Aidan Meehan's books and this one is by far the best for beginners imho. Use Meehans works when you can replicate a good many of the patterns found here. It is also a fine resource for the more elaborate patterns which are not covered very well in other works. Many of these patterns can be transferred to leather, clay etc, you name it. Overall if you only get one book on Celtic Art get this one and with a bit of practice your effort will be rewarded." ENCHANTMENT
stories by Doris Vallejo. B&W and color illustrations by Boris Vallejo. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1984 Ballantine large soft cover, second printing. Light edgewear and shelf wear with light tanning to page edges. Content: 100 of artist Boris Vallejo's finest sensual paintings come to life with gothic stories of desire, fantasy and sensuality mingle in a journey of the senses - a showcase of Boris Vallejo's provocative paintings of men and women set against gothic tales of romance. The artist's stunning illustrations of science fiction and fantasy have appeared on the covers of books by such writers as Frederik Pohl, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Larry Niven, Lin Carter, and Alice Chetwynd Ley, as well as in such well-known series as Conan the Barbarian, Doc Savage, and Tarzan. Vallejo's interest in bodybuilding and the human form is reflected in his art. In Enchantment, he painstakingly depicts every line and muscle of perfect human specimens in sharp, smooth detail. His subjects often transcend human beauty -- they have the wings of birds, the teeth of wolves, and the tails of serpents. Coupled with mythical stories of otherworldly costume balls, voyeurism, seductive vampires, and intoxicating angels, Vallejo's art celebrates eroticism and desire. [1 copy available]

FABERGE FLOWERS
by Marilyn Pfeifer Swezey, et al. Stunning color photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2004 Harry N. Abrams hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first ediiton, fist printing. Content: Well, ok, this art isn't in the class with the Faberge Eggs, but almost. In fact, some of the jewel flowers were placed on the Eggs. At one time, the royal families in Europe and Russia were accustomed to having their every whim satisfied, even apparently impossible desires like freezing and preserving nature in its most perfect form. This collection of photographs and essays documents Carl Fabergé’s attempts to do just that for the Russian Imperial Family and other aristocrats throughout Europe. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Fabergé (who’s best known for his extravagant jeweled Easter eggs) created delicate replicas of pansies, lilies of the valley, violets and other flowers and berries that were most often destined for glass display cabinets in the royal palaces of London and Moscow. In somewhat dry terms that draw heavily on sales ledgers and collection inventories, Swezey, a noted authority on the Russian Imperial Family, and a handful of decorative arts experts chronicle the history of the sculptures, from their genesis to the disappearance of many during the outbreak of the Soviet revolution. The lush color photos allow readers to get closer to the pieces than they could ever hope to otherwise, so close that one can see the real fuzz used to augment an intricately crafted dandelion puff and get a sense of how the jars were fashioned in order to look like they were filled with water. Fascinating! [1 copy available]

THE MOONLIGHT GARDEN: New Discoveries at the Taj Mahal
edited by Elizabeth Moynihan. Beautiful color photos & charts, B&W fold-outs, B&W "blueprints." Condition: NEW 2001 Univ. of Washington State Press soft cover, assumed first printing. Content: For 350 years, the Taj Mahal in Agra has reigned luminous and splendid as perhaps the most admired monument in the world. Visitors who gazed across the Yamuna River from the Taj pavilions have viewed what appears to be little more than farmers' fields and barren ground. But historical references as well as paintings from the time of Shahjahan (r. 1628-58) reveal that it was once densely covered by rectangular walled enclosures and lush vegetation. The Mughal emperor Babur built gardens here as a way of evoking the characteristic delights of the homeland he had abandoned when he moved from Central Asia into India in 1526. Eventually, as the Mughal Empire grew more powerful, the riverbank became lined with gardens belonging not only to the imperial family but also to important nobles. This definitive volume describes the discoveries of an international project documenting the surface remains of a long-abandoned Mughal garden, spectacularly located directly across the river from the Taj Mahal. The book is illustrated with new photographs of the Taj Mahal and the garden--now identified as the Mahtab Bagh, or Moonlight Garden--as well as with paintings from Shahjahan's era. Modeled after the Persian concept of earthly paradise, the pleasure gardens of 17th-century Mughal emperors exhibited elaborate renditions of cut-stone architecture, water chutes, standing pools, flowing fountains, and plantings intended to stimulate the senses. Well-ordered oases in an otherwise hot, dusty, and chaotic environment, these gardens were places of respite and enjoyment. The authors show that in plan, proportion, and directional alignment, the Moonlight Garden is indeed an integral part of the design of the gardens at the Taj Mahal, presenting an expansive new interpretation of one of the most famous buildings in the world.
