THE AMAZING PAPER CUTTINGS OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
by Beth Wagner Brust. B&W photos-repros of Andersen's work. Condition: NEW 2003 Houghton Mifflin soft cover, 5th printing. Content: As a storyteller, Andersen relied on simple language and dramatic gestures to tap the imagination of his listeners. Sometimes, it seems, he also supplemented his tellings with the making of paper cuttings, a popular craft in the mid-19th century. Brust provides a skeleton biography of Andersen using anecdotal reports of some of the occasions when he employed his handicraft to entertain children, capture a scene during his travels, and even as a sort of universal language when in a foreign country. The more than 20 reproductions demonstrate his imaginative use of materials. While none illustrate any of his stories, many cuttings demonstrate his skill in liberating intricate shapes and in designing complex, interlocking compositions. Nevertheless, the use of "amazing" in the title is a bit of an exaggeration. Rather, the book's value is in showing a little-known facet of the man's personality. The writing is direct and informative and uses quotations from letters and diaries to spice up the simple prose; the chapter on the art of paper cutting is a useful presentation of the technical processes. An unusual book that combines biography and creativity. Grades 6 - 9. [1 copy available]

FINDING GOD IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS
by Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware. Condition: NEW 2001 Tyndale small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: There's more to Middle-earth than meets the eye, argue Kurt Bruner and Jim War. J.R.R. Tolkien, a devout Christian, helped bring C.S. Lewis into the faith and met weekly with Lewis and Charles Williams at an Oxford pub for heated religious and literary discussions that informed The Lord of the Rings. Although Bruner and Ware avoid any simplistic claim that Tolkien's saga is "a covert allegory of the Gospel," the authors assert that the books have evangelistic power because they "can open the heart's back door when the front door is locked." Twenty-one short chapters describe various scenes and themes from Tolkien's work in order to illustrate truths of Christian life. For instance, Frodo and Sam's awareness that their adventures are part of a larger story "reflects the Christian understanding of providence, that we are all part of a story being written by the creator of all that is." Finding God successfully clarifies the ways that Tolkien's Christian worldview influenced the creation of his fantasy world, while respecting the artistic integrity of his achievement. Finding God in The Lord of the Rings

FLOWERS FROM HELL: A Satanic Reader
edited by Nikolas Schreck. Condition: NEW 2001 Creation Books, first edition. Content: Reviewer: This is an anthology tracing the development of Satan as a literary character in fiction and poetry. Most selections are excerpts from longer works (novels, plays, epic poems), beginning with Dante's Inferno and culminating in Michael A. Aquino's The Diabolicon (1970). Short stories and poems are reprinted in their entirety. As an anthology of old classics (Aquino is the only living contributor), the sole original content is Schreck's lengthy Introduction, which is instructive, if opinionated. Schreck provides historical context for each selection, but also critiques them from an iconoclastic perspective. One senses that Schreck admires Satan -- or at least the Satan concept. Schreck views Satan as a celebration of rebellion, individual liberation, courage, inspiration to artistic creation. And he argues that many authors and artists, throughout the centuries, have had "sympathy for the Devil." [1 copy available]

GENTLEMAN BEAR
by William Pene Du Bois. Adorable color illustations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1985 Farrar, Straus soft cover, stated first edition (but I 'm not sure about that). The covers have been laminated and reinforced. Several pages show water mark at bottom corner tip. Content: According to this spoof on British upper-class eccentricities, there are plenty of closet Teddy bear lovers among the bluebloods. Bayard has been Sir Billy Browne-Browne's bosom bear since toddler days, and readers follow them through public school, World War II and Bayard's kidnapping and ransom. Du Bois's focus on small and large events creates intimacy, and the events are well-accompanied by ample full-page color illustrations of roly-poly Bayard and rosy Billy being fitted for identical suits, at school with five other boys and bears (the soon-to-be-famous Teddy-Bear Six) or pole-vaulting at the Olympics. Dry humor adds interest: "Bayard was difficult to see because he was tucked under Billy's blazer. This made Billy look curiously lumpy for an athlete. . . ." This silliness is justified in the final chapter, when Sir Billy (now ancient and lethargic) takes a vigorous stand on Bayard's worth as friend, matchmaker, companion and financial wizard. All told, this is rarified stuff. The type of humor, built largely on the contrast between what one expects and what one sees, it's a witty, gives us a droll book. This is recommended for ages 4 to 8, but boy is that off the mark. Perhaps sophisticated junior high school readers or even high school students could enjoy it, but I think at least 16 + is the right age level. [1 copy available]

THE INCREDIBLE BRAZILIAN
by Zulfikar Ghose. Condition: UNREAD 1973 Bantam paperback, no printing given. Tiny edgewear & binder's glue sttring top spine. Interior perfect - not even any light tanning. Content: Reviewer: "Zulfikar Ghose is without question the greatest Pakistani Latin American magical realist. This is probably the reason he is not better known, and the reason that this, his masterpiece, is sadly out of print. He is too hard to categorize. Set in 16th century Brazil, the novel is a brilliant exploration of ambition, greed, deception and lust. Lust perhaps being the most important of these, as the desire to possess a new and virgin continent is conflated with, and sometimes identical to, sexual desire. The language is beautiful, precise, sometimes arcane and always compelling. And although this novel contains serious reflections on important philosophical themes, the narrative drive never flags. As you read the ending, you will want to flip to Page One and begin again." Fascinating! [1 copy available]

IN A PERSIAN MIRROR: Images of the West and Westerners in Iranian Fiction
by M. R. Ghanoonparvar. Condition: NEW 1993 University of Texas Press Trade Paperback, stated first edition, first printing. Content: The extreme anti-Western actions and attitudes of Iranians in the past decade have astonished and dismayed the West, which has characterized the Iranian positions as irrational and inexplicable. In this groundbreaking study of images of the West in Iranian literature, however, M. R. Ghanoonparvar reveals that these attitudes did not develop suddenly or inexplicably but rather evolved over more than two centuries of Persian-Western contact. Notable among the authors whose works Ghanoonparvar discusses are Sadeq Hedayat, M. A. Jamalzadeh, Hushang Golshiri, Gholamhoseyn Sa'edi, Simin Daneshvar, Moniru Ravanipur, Sadeq Chubak, and Jalal Al-e Ahmad. This survey significantly illuminates the sources of Iranian attitudes toward the West and offers many surprising discoveries for Western readers, not least of which is the fact that Iranians have often found Westerners to be as enigmatic and incomprehensible as we have believed them to be. SHADOW SONG (INSCRIBED COPY)
by Terry Kay. Condition: Inscribed on flyleaf by Kay dated 10/10/96. New but does have very very pale shelfwear diagonal crease bottom back corner. Pale tanning to page edges. Content: In the summer of 1955, Madison Lee "Bobo" Murphy was a waiter at the Catskills' Pine Hill Inn. A rural Southerner, he had never heard the word meshugge until Avrum Feldman -- a retired New York City furrier -- became his unlikely friend. For Bobo, nothing about that special time and place ever lost its glow: Avrum's obsession with the haunting voice of a famous opera diva, music that no one else could hear; the exotic mingling of Yiddish and German in the dining room; and the girl he met and loved. In everyone's life, Avrum claimed, there is one grand, undeniable moment that never stops mattering. For Bobo, it was his first glimpse of beautiful Amy Lourie. But, for a wealthy Jewish girl and a Georgia farm boy, the summer had to end, leaving Bobo with the pain of lost love. Nearly forty years later, his children grown and marriage comfortably routine, Bobo comes north once more; there, amidst the haunting hints of Amy's presence, she unexpectedly appears. Nothing has dimmed the passion of their youth, yet two lifetimes and a thousand Catskills sunsets stand between who they were and who they have become. The barriers between them are different now. But mysteriously, miraculously, Bobo reawakens the dream of a love larger than himself. [1 copy available]

SHAKESPEARE: HIS WORK & HIS WORLD
by Michael Rosen. Wonderful detailed color illustrations by Robert Ingpen. Condition: NEW 2006 Candlewick large soft cover, no printing given. Content: Rosen's compelling text and Ingpen's dramatic paintings invite readers into the "extraordinary and dangerous times" in which the Bard wrote his famous plays. The narrative and design divide into distinct sections ideal for browsing. To set the stage, Rosen introduces "A Plot!" and details how, in 1598, to avoid paying their landlord, actors covertly pulled down the timber from the Curtain theater to reconstruct the Globe (a portion of which Shakespeare owned) on the opposite side of the Thames. Most chapters begin with engaging, chatty rhetorical questions (relayed, however, in a sometimes distracting typeface) such as "What's So Special About Shakespeare?" and "So How Does Someone Stay That Famous?" Some metaphors, such as comparing Shakespeare's plays to a "house full of many amazing rooms," become a bit strained, but the narrative benefits from liberal quotation of Shakespeare's plays. Rosen effectively sets the historical context and reconstructs and imagines the events and circumstances of Shakespeare's life, while also demonstrating the surprising and pervasive extent of his linguistic legacy. Ingpen's atmospheric paintings evoke the romance of the era and capture the pageantry of the plays. A strong and worthy companion for readers exploring Shakespeare. Ages 12-15. Questions welcome.
