COOKERY AND DINING IN IMPERIAL ROME: A Bibliography, Critical Review and Translation of the Ancient Book Known as Apicus de re Coquinaria
by Apicius. Edited & translated by Joseph Dommers Vehling. 49 B&W illustrations. Condition: NEW 1997 Dover Trade Paper edition, no printing given . Most likely printed in c. late 1990s or early 2000s. Tiny edge wear. Content: Oldest known cookbook in existence offers readers a clear picture of what foods Romans ate, how they prepared them. Actual recipes—from fig fed pork and salt fish balls in wine sauce to pumpkin Alexander style, nut custard turnovers and rose pie. Reviewer: "What I find most praiseworthy about this book is Dommers Vehling's obvious interest in gastronomy in general and in ancient cookery in particular. He makes a fairly honest attempt to fill in some of the background for the reader. And although he may be guilty of having his own point of view, we must remember that he was writing over sixty years ago. Dommers also gives the Latin names of the recipes, makes comments on many of them and makes references to other translations." [1 copy available]

THE FRUGAL GOURMET ON OUR IMMIGRANT ANCESTORS: Recipes you should have gotten from your grandmother
by Jeff Smith. B&W illustrations and decorations. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1991 William Morrow large hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Problem: Gift inscription top loose end page and the DJ has been price-clipped. Content: If ever a book needed to be on the shelves of libraries serving YAs, this is it. It's a treasure trove of information for those who enjoy cooking, who are interested in ethnic studies of the U. S., or who long for a deeper connection with their heritage. Smith shares with readers recipes of immigrants who are often overlooked--Basques, Ethiopians, Jamaicans, Latvians, Scottish, Saudi Arabians, and many more. Each chapter begins with an illustration of the people, a map, and a few pages of introduction, including history and food customs. The recipes are clearly written and easy to follow. Hints and equipment lists are thorough. A cookbook bibliography, immigrant history bibliography, source list for unusual ingredients, and an index complete the package. Celebrate America's melting pot with a cookbook that honors our diversity. [One of my favorite sections is "Hawaiian" chapter.] [1 copy available]
