EASTER ISLAND: Mystery of the Stone Giants (Discoveries series)
by Catherine & Michael Orliac. Wonderful original color illustrations with color photos. Condition: NEW 1995 Abrams small (but packed) soft cover, no printing given. Content: Reviewer: "This is a translation of Des dieux regardent les etoiles -- Les derniers secrets de l'Ile de Paques ("Gods gaze at the stars -- The last secrets of Easter Island"), Catherine and Michel Orliac's excellent little book about Easter Island. Easter Island and its mysteries -- from its huge statues to its strange hieroglyphics -- have been a magnet for crankery of all types, from the benign to the outrageous. How refreshing, then, it is to see such a delicious book, factual and balanced, with high-quality authentic illustrations on every page, every one of them well chosen and to the point. Almost everything you may ever want to know about Easter Island -- short of a tourist guide -- is there, with full sources and references. How so much information could have been packed in so few pages is a wonder. Complete, attractive and scholarly, this little book will appeal to all, even to the specialists. The illustrations alone are a never-ending source of wonder and delight. Highly recommended." Questions welcome. [2 copies available]

THE FATAL SHORE: The epic of Australia's founding

His sister Laenihi, an expert in magic and healing, tells him who his love is, and how he can win her. She is Kama, who is lives a secluded life on the big island, promised in marriage to either the king of Puna or the king of Hilo. Hale-Mano's quest for Kama's love takes him through learning to be a farmer, learning to be a chanter, and learning to please a wife. LAND OF PROMISES: Aborigines and Development in the East Kimberley
edited by H. C. Coombs; H. McCann, H. Ross, & N. M Williams. B&W photos, maps, charts, & drawings illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read 1989 Aboriginal Studies Press Trade Paperback, assumed first printing. Two pages show vertical pen marks at single paragraphs - the remainder perfect. Content: This is the report of the East Kimberley Impact Assessment Project which was conducted between 1985 and 1988 in response to requests from local Aboriginal communities for assistance in dealing with economic and social change arising from resource development - Pastoral settlement, the 1880s gold rush, the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, the Argyle diamond mine and tourism all promised riches to the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, and to the Australian economy. This book presents a strong case for questioning belief in that promise and calls for new directions in national policies in Aboriginal affairs. It argues that development should be based on Aboriginal people, and on principles of sustainability to maintain the quality of the environment and the continuance of its resources. This is not a land of promise but a land of promises, broken and forgotten. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

ONCE WERE WARRIORS (VHS Movie)
directed by Lee Tamahori. Movie stills both covers. 105 minutes run time. Condition: Used, but good, 1994 Communicado (New Zealand Film Commission) VHS movie. Most likely this is a former rental movie, although there are no overt signs. The tape itself is in excellent condition, but the box shows wear in the form of edgewear and rubbings along the hinges. Content: New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. The film pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride.
