ABORIGINE MYTHS & LEGENDS (originally Myths & Legends of the Australian Aboriginals (1930)
by William Ramsay Smith. B&W art reproductions and photos plus B&W artifact drawings. Cover painting by Joseph Lycett. Condition: PLEASE READ / UNREAD, BUT NOT PERFECT, 1996 Senate (UK) Trade Paperback, no printing given. Light edge wear with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: The culture of the Australian Aborigine reaches back across thousands of years to a mythic era they call the "dreamtime." The myths of the dreamtime wove an imaginatively rich world into being, filling a landscape of vast spaces with ritual and magic. With the telling of these marvellous tales, the barren world of the outback was transformed into a land in which all the elements - from animals and plants to the immensity of the night sky - realized a symbolic relation to one another. In passing on stories and legends of this wilderness, successive generations learned the skills needed for survival in this harsh world. This book places these legends in the context of the religion, kinship and social ties of this ancient people. Questions encouraged. [1 copy available]

THE DAY THE STONES WALKED (A Story of Easter Island)
by T.A. Barron. Wonderful color illustrations and cover art by William Low. Condition: NEW 2007 Philomel hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Reviewer: "In an essential Note at the end of the book T. A. Barron writes that when he visited the great carved faces of Easter Island he "had no idea that the stones themselves would tell me a story." And it is a profoundly moving story that young and old will ponder and return to. Young Pico is the child of one of the great carvers of Easter Island at the height of its former glory. Pico's father believes that the gigantic heads--the moai--can come to life and help people in time of trouble. Pico does not take this seriously until he is caught by a huge wave--larger than a mountain. Overwhelmed by the power of the ocean, Pico becomes aware of voices "deeper than the sea itself" while the wave displaces even the great carved stones. In this moment the boy discovers his spiritual connection to his people--and survives. But in many ways, his island is already declining, even without the "help" of the violent wave. The tsunami is a matter of archeological record, one still remembered by present-day spirit-singers of Easter Island. But there is more to the story than this--at one time, Easter Island was covered with subtropical forest that supported a much more complex culture than it does nowadays. The people used the forest for everything, and in time it was exhausted, along with the plants and animals that lived there. Without the forests, the Easter Islanders and their achievements dwindled as well. Barron rightly hopes that readers can learn from the experience of Easter Island. "Kids need to know the truth," he remarks. Indeed, this book makes the truth very compelling, although for me, the spiritual connection with the great carvings may be the most enduring impression." DISCOVERY: The Quest for the Great South Land
by Miriam Estensen. Wonderful B&W photos, maps, and art reproductions. Condition: NEW 1999 Conway maritime (UK) hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Content: Estensen, who lives in Australia, takes the reader on a journey of 2000 years, beginning with a description of the geology and life of the last unknown continent. Estensen delivers a memorable book that seamlessly melds history, geopolitics, adventure, travel and natural history to tell of civilization's imaginative and physical forays into the mapmakers' southern Terra Incognita. For centuries, explorers and kings believed in a Great South Land, a fabled continent full of gold that reputedly encircled the lower reaches of the Southern Hemisphere and joined Africa's tip. Estensen tells the stirring story of how this myth propelled Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Arab and English seafarers vying for maritime supremacy and led to the discovery of Australia and Antarctica. Some elements of the story are well known: Portuguese explorers rounding Africa and reaching India; the forging of a mercantile empire from Goa to Indonesia by Afonso de Albuquerque, Portuguese governor of India; Magellan's 1519-1522 voyage around the world for Spain; Dutch navigator Abel Tasman's wide-arced circumnavigation of Australia in 1642; and, finally, Englishman James Cook's expedition to Tahiti in 1768-1770, during which he charted Australia's east coast. Chicago-born Estensen, who lives in Australia, draws on archival research and archeological finds in her zestful account of this historic quest, a remarkable tale of derring-do, incredible blunders, persistence, greed, mutiny and devotion to a mirage. Particularly exciting passages concern the medieval underground trade in precious maps and stolen information. Estensen's seaworthy narrative is intriguingly illustrated with maps, engravings, paintings and woodcuts. [1 copy available]

HAWAIIAN ANTIQUITIES
by David Malo. Translated from the Hawaiian by Dr. Nathaniel B. Emerson. B&W drawings illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read 1980 Bishop Museum Press Trade Paperback, second edition, 4th printing. Light series of small rubbings along front cover fore edge and the lower third of the front spine. Interior clean & tight. Content: This is a classic work in Hawaiian literature. Written approx in 1840, the author bridges an ancient, pagan, pre-Cook Hawaiian world; and a new world of foreigners, private property, diseases, Christianity, and a struggle to maintain a Hawaiian identity. Malo describes many aspects of ancient Hawaiian life and culture, including tools and technology, land tenure, religious practices, politics, agriculture, medicine, games and amusements, marriage and family life, etc. This text is still considered a primary source for knowledge of Hawaiian culture in the era before Captain Cook sailed into Kealakekua Bay. Malo never quite mastered the English language, so Hawaiian Antiquities was written in Hawaiian. It is one of the few books in the canon of texts written in Hawaiian. It is especially valuable to linguists to have been written by a native speaker, and is essential to the modern study of Hawaiian grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Of particular interest are the many "mele" (songs) quoted. Malo believed, as many people still do, that the "mele" was the highest Hawaiian art form, integrating music, poetry, and hula, often in a religious context. Malo himself seems a somewhat dispeptic sort. A Christian minister in the rigid mold of the Protestant missionaries, he disdained many of the customs and practices he describes. He occasionally disparages the primitive technology and culture of his people. Yet for all his prejudice, Malo's tone is usually dispassionate and objective. He gets a few facts wrong. (Hawaiian surfboards may have been long, but they were never 30-40 feet long.) Modern cultural anthropologists must surely cringe at his omissions and technique. And modern Hawaiian language teachers are still sorting out his spelling and grammatical errors (hey, do you speak perfect English?)But nobody disagrees that we are very lucky to have this book." There are also a few misspellings in this edition. [1 copy available]

by Ion Idriess. B&W illustrations by Tony Pyrzakpwski. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, ex-library book. 1994 Bookworld hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), second printing. Light tanning to page edges. Content: Stories (some fiction, some non-fiction) of Australia and her people. From his late teens, Idriess worked in rural New South Wales, particularly in the Narrabri and Moree districts. He travelled extensively around the state, working in a variety of itinerant jobs including employment as a rabbit poisoner, boundary rider, drover, prospecting for gold as well as harvesting sandalwood. He also worked as a shearer and dingo shooter. While working as an opal miner at Lightning Ridge in about 1910, he wrote short pieces for The Bulletin about life on the opal fields. He later headed north, working in several tin mines around Cairns and Cooktown including his own claim. In 1913 he moved to Cape York where he lived with an aboriginal tribe, learning their customs and lifestyle. With the outbreak of war, in 1914 he returned to Townsville and enlisted in the 5th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, as a trooper. He saw action in Palestine, Sinai and Turkey, being wounded at Beersheba and Gallipoli - where he acted as spotter for noted sniper Billy Sing. After returning to Australia and recuperating from his wounds, he travelled to remote Cape York, and worked with pearlers and missionaries in the Torres Strait islands and Papua New Guinea where he worked as a gold miner. Other ventures included buffalo shooting in the Northern Territory, and journeys to Central and Western Australia. In 1928 Idriess settled in Sydney where he wrote as a freelance writer. His writing style drew on his experiences as a soldier, prospector, and bushman. He wrote on a multitude of topics, including travel, recollection, biography, history, anthropology and his own ideas on possible future events. His books were generally non-fiction, but written in a narrative, story style. Idriess wrote from real life experiences using knowledge he had personally gained by travelling extensively and working at a variety of occupations. (From wikipedia,. [1 copy available]

LAND OF PROMISES: Aborigines and Development in the East Kimberley
edited by H. C. Coombs; H. McCann, H. Ross, & N. M Williams. B&W photos, maps, charts, & drawings illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read 1989 Aboriginal Studies Press Trade Paperback, assumed first printing. Two pages show vertical pen marks at single paragraphs - the remainder perfect. Content: This is the report of the East Kimberley Impact Assessment Project which was conducted between 1985 and 1988 in response to requests from local Aboriginal communities for assistance in dealing with economic and social change arising from resource development - Pastoral settlement, the 1880s gold rush, the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, the Argyle diamond mine and tourism all promised riches to the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, and to the Australian economy. This book presents a strong case for questioning belief in that promise and calls for new directions in national policies in Aboriginal affairs. It argues that development should be based on Aboriginal people, and on principles of sustainability to maintain the quality of the environment and the continuance of its resources. MARGARET MEAD AND SAMOA: The Making and Unmaking of an Anthropological Myth
by Derek Freeman. B&W era photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1983 Harvard hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket0, no printing given. Very light edge wear to DJ corners, top & bottom spine. Content: In 1928 Margaret Mead announced her stunning discovery of a culture in which the storm and stress of adolescence didn't exist. The resulting book, "Coming of Age in Samoa" has since become a classic - and the best-selling anthropology book of all time. Within the nature-nurture controversy that still divides scientists, Mead's evidence has long been a crucial "negative instance", an apparent proof of the sovereignty of culture over biology. In this book, the author presents startling but wholly convincing evidence that Mead's proof is false. On the basis of years of patient fieldwork and historical research, Freeman refutes Mead's characterization of Samoan society and adolescence point for point. Far from the relaxed transition to adulthood that Mead ascribed to permissive child-bearing and restrictive regulations against premarital sex. Reviewer: "The is a most important book because it sets the record straign about Margaret Mead. Her book on Samoa created a false understanding of primitive peoples. She went to Samoa to do her PhD dissertation and came back with a myth that supported the prejudices and biases of her graduate advisor, Franz Boas. She purportedly discovered that the Samoans were the personification of Jean Jacque Roussoue's "Noble Savage." There were unspoiled by the vices of Western Civilization. The biggest vice was supposedly the West's repressive sexuality that gave rise to social aggression of various kinds. Derek Freeman blows all of this out of the water. He points out among other things that Mean [sic] did not know the language and stayed there only a few weeks. This does not come up to the standards of methodology that anthropologists have come to accept to accurately understand and describe a culture." [1 copy available]

ONCE WERE WARRIORS (VHS Movie)
directed by Lee Tamahori. Movie stills both covers. 105 minutes run time. Condition: Used, but good, 1994 Communicado (New Zealand Film Commission) VHS movie. Most likely this is a former rental movie, although there are no overt signs. The tape itself is in excellent condition, but the box shows wear in the form of edgewear and rubbings along the hinges. Content: New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. The film pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride. POEMS OF BANJO PATERSON
by A. B. Paterson. Beautifully illustrated in color by Pro Hart. Condition: Gently pre-read 1982 Lansdowne Press (Sydney) hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), no printing given. Very light shelf wear. Interior clean. No major problems; just pre-read. Content: Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson may fairly be regarded as Australia's national poet. Waltzing Matilda, Clancy of the Overflow and The Man from the Snowy River still strike a chord in the hearts of Australians wherever they may be, evoking, as they do, the rough life and values of the outback. The apparent simplicity of the ballad form which 'Banjo' embraced so wholeheartedly is balanced by many syllabic irregularities and considerable ingenuity of stress and internal rhyme. This harks back to the old ballads of the English and Scottish borders, as well as the heroic songs of Ireland. Banjo Paterson s poetry is the authentic voice of a frontier society in which song and campfire recitation were the only entertainment open to tired stockmen and drovers Questions welcome [1 copy available]

TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG (A Novel)
by Peter Carey. Winner of the Booker Prize. Condition: NEW 2002 Vintage International Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: "What is it about we Australians, eh?" demands a schoolteacher near the end of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. "Do we not have a Jefferson? A Disraeli? Might not we find someone better to admire than a horse-thief and a murderer?" It's the author's sole nod to the contradictory feelings Ned Kelly continues to evoke today, more than a century after his death. A psychopathic killer to some, a crusading folk hero to others, Kelly was a sharpshooting outlaw who eluded a brutal police manhunt for nearly two years. For better or worse, he's now a part of the Australian national myth. [1 copy available]

The differences between the various island groups visited by the English are well delineated by Withey, biographer of Abigail Adams ( Dearest Friend) .
