AIR FORCE ONE (Movie Novelization)
by Max Allan Collins. Based on Screenplay by Andrew W. Marlowe. Harrison Ford movie art cover. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Ballantine paperback, 4th printing. Tiny edgewear at corners & bottom spine. Interior clean & tight. Content: Reviewer: "Air Force One is the book the movie should have been based on. I really enjoyed the film, but, having read this fine book, I think I would have believed the film more if it was, I don't know, more like the novel! As you read the book, you'll discover there are scenes and dialogue you wish were in the film (the sequence where President James Marshall drinks a beer before takeoff becomes a funny discourse with his aides over the political mileage the President could get from drinking Russian beer as opposed to Heineken), and best of all, the characters and there motivations are a good deal more believable, somehow, on the printed page than on the silver screen, maybe because a writer can just write things as exposition that a screenwriter can't put effectively into dialogue. Better than the movie." The 1997 movie was a slam-bang thriller starring Harrison Ford, Glenn Close, and Gary Oldman. Directed by the great Wolfgang Petersen. [1 copy available]

Content: "1943 -- the Year of the Ram. In the Temple of Sublime Truth, high in the Himalayas, a master monk prepares to transfer an ancient scroll to his young protégé. The scroll holds the key to an unspeakable power, one which in the wrong hands could destroy the world. According to prophecy, the young monk will become the steward of the scroll for the next sixty years -- five times the Year of the Ram. But to do so, he must sacrifice everything he has -- including his name. Present day -- the Year of the Ram. It is time to pass the scroll and its secrets on to a new guardian, one chosen by destiny and revealed through the fulfillment of the three Noble Prophecies. But the bulletproof monk has no students. He's far from home, in another world, another time, and an old adversary from one of history's most evil chapters is closing in. Though he is hunted and alone, fate throws the monk together with a very talented but undisciplined -- and unorthodox -- young pickpocket named Kar. Could this be the disciple he's been searching for? Could Kar possibly have the strength and the will to be entrusted with this task? Can a common thief possibly be enlightened? Maybe -- but they may not survive long enough to find out. " The 2003 movie was directed by Paul Hunter and starred the ever wonderful Chow Yun-Fat, Seann William Scott, Jaime King, Karel Roden, and Victoria Smurfit. Great fun! Great fantasy. CASINO ROYALE (James Bond in Casino Royale)
by Ian Fleming. Condition: UNREAD 1982 Berkley paperback, second printing. Tiny edgewear. Light tanning to page edges. Content: "The location of the story is Royale-les-Eaux and casino, situated as a resort in N.E. France. Since the book was first published in 1953 that may be an approximate time for the action, and it most certainly has to be a few years after WWII from references made by Bond. Quite a bit of the story is set at the card tables within the casino involving the card game baccarat. Other than 'M' there are only 5 main characters: James Bond, Vesper Lynd, Rene Mathis, Felix Leiter, and one of Fleming's most interesting creations: Le Chiffre or the cypher. And had it not been for the intervention of SMERSH, Le Chiffre had the best of Bond and would have killed Bond in this first novel; Le Chiffre certainly came close enough. Sub characters concern a group of Bulgars or Bulgarians who are hired hit men trying to use several camera bombs to blow James into tiny, little pieces. The reader's interest is held to all of this as the story unfolds, what could have happened 50 years back is quite plausible yet today, too." The 1967 movie was directed by Ken Hughes and starred Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, David Niven (as James Bond), Orson Welles (Le Chiffre), Joanna Pettet, the great William Holden, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Peter O'Toole, Charles Boyer, and Deborah Kerr. Fabulous cast and great fun. [1 copy available]

THE FOUR FEATHERS
by A. E. W. Mason. Cover art by Edwin Herder. Condition: NEW 2002 TOR paperback, firt printing. Tiny edgewear with very pale impression front cover. Interior clean & tight. Very thin binder's glue string down spine. Content: How far must a man go to prove he is not a coward? British guardsman Harry Feversham stuns his friends when, just before he is scheduled to ship off to the Sudan, he quits his regiment. In shocked retaliation for this dastardly act of cowardice, Harry is presented with four feathers: one from each of his three closest regimental friends and the fourth-and the most devastating-from his fiancée. Determined to prove his bravery-and to clear his name, Harry embarks for the Sudan. In search of service . . . and of honor. This is one of the most filmed of all English novels: 1915 (Howard Estabrook as Harry); 1921 (Harry Ham as Harry); 1929 (Richard Arlen [Harry], Fay Wray, & the great William Powell); 1939 (John Clements as Harry); 1977 TV movie (Beau Bridges & Jane Seymour); and 2002 (Heath Ledger & Kate Hudson). Of all of them, I like the 1939 and 1977 versions best. I believe all of them are now available on DVD. [1 copy available]

THE FOURTH PROTOCOL
by Frederick Forsyth. Michael Caine movie still cover. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1987 Bantam paperback, 4th printing. Interior clean & tight with light tanning to page edges, but there is a medium-size "chunk" out of the top back cover edge along with 2 short diagonal creases. Content: Reviewer: "Frederick Forsyth's "The Fourth Protocol" written in 1984 before the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. is a classic offering in the political thriller and espionage genre. A by product of a jewel theft in London is the discovery that sensitive clandestine information has been traitorously pilfered by George Berenson, a member of the British Ministery of Defense. High ranking agent of the British Secret Service, M15, John Preston has been assigned to plug the leak and evaluate the damage. Exhaustive investigation unearths a plot nurtured through a South African source and eminating from the very top of the Soviet government. British traitor, Harold Philby, now a colonel in the KGB, has inspired a plot approved by the Soviet Secretary General created to topple the reigning British government. A pact to avoid broaching the "fourth protocol" would be violated resulting in the establishment of the hard left, Communist sympathetic Labour Party as the rulers of the British government. The fourth protocol was part of a treaty signed by nuclear powers is avoid certain types of nuclear proliferation." The 1987 movie was directed by John Mackenzie and starred Michael Caine, Pierce Brosnan, Ned Beatty, Joanna Cassidy, Julian Glover, and Matt Frewer. Forsyth has a bit part - see if you can find him. by James Kahn. Screenplay by Willard Huyck & Gloria Katz. Story by George Lucas. Color movie stills insert. Condition: UNREAD 1984 Ballantinie Books paperback, first edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear with pale tanning to page edges. Content: Generally considered to be the weakest link in a great movie series, the novelization for "Doom" is probably the best of the series. It is much closer to the finished film, adding to it by way of thoughts and motivations for the characters but thankfully avoiding the trap of getting mired down in efforts to produce a "serious" work. Fast paced action. The 1984 movie starred Harrison Ford (of course) and Kate Capshaw (now Mrs. Spielberg). Read the book; skip the movie. [1 copy available]

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
by Richard Condon. Condition: NEW 2004 Quality Paperback Book Club Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Originally published in 1959 during the height of the Cold War and in the wake of McCarthy, this book scared heck out of America - and then with the 1962 Sinatra movie, the fear was renewed. Sgt Raymond Shaw is a hero of the first order. He's an ex-prisoner of war who saved the life of his entire outfit, a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the stepson of an influential senator ... and the perfect assassin. Brainwashed during his time as a POW he is a "sleeper", a living weapon to be triggered by a secret signal. He will act without question, no matter what order he is made to carry out. To stop Shaw, his former commanding officer must uncover the truth behind a twisted conspiracy of torture, betrayal and power that will lead to the highest levels of the government. There have been two movies of this book. The first (and the best IMHO) was the 1962 John Frankenheimer directed classic with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury (who steals the movie), Henry Silva, and a riviting performance by James Gregory. The 2004 remake was directed by Jonathan Demme and placed during the Gulf War, starred the great Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, and Liev Schreiber. A note: After JFK was assassinated, this movie was pulled by Sinatra and was not released again for about 20 years. [2 copies available]

MICHAEL CRICHTON: 3 Novels in 1 Book: The Andromeda Strain; The Terminal Man, & The Great Train Robbery
by of course, Michael Crichton. Condition: UNREAD 1992 Wings Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket) edition, 13th printing. Light tanning to page edges. 675 pages. Content: The Andromeda Strain: A U.S. Army satellite falls to earth near Piedmont, New Mexico. The recovery team experiences difficulties as it becomes clear that the satellite has performed its intended function all too well, and has brought back something from space. A team of scientists is assembled in a high-tech, underground facility to identify and defeat the "enemy" before it is too late. The 1971 movie was directed by Robert Wise and starred Arthur Hill, David Wayne (one of my favorites), & James Olson. The Terminal Man: The premise is that a man named Harry Benson (George Segal) has suffered a brain injury that causes seizures resulting in uncontrollable violent behavior. He volunteers to undergo implantation of a "limbic pacer," which is kind of like a pacemaker but it's in the brain, controlling the seizures. Naturally the procedure (first ever in a human) doesn't work, and we see the disastrous results of said failure. The 1974 movie was directed by Mike Hodges and starred Segal, Joan Hackett, Richard Dysart, & Jill Clayburgh. The Great Train Robbery: In Victorian England, a master criminal makes elaborate plans to steal a shipment of gold from a moving train. They need wax impressions of keys, coffins, dead cats, and a great deal of planning in order to pull it off. The 1979 movie was directed by Crichton and starred Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland, & Lesley-Anne Down. [1 copy available]

MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON (AKA Burton and Speke)
by William Harrison. Condition: UNREAD 1989 Ballantine PB first printing. Renamed for the movie - this is the movie edition. Tiny edgewear with name stamped inside front cover and rubbing along back hinge. Interior perfect. Content: It was 1854 when two very different men, English aristocrat John Hanning Speke and bold adventurer Sir Richard Burton, embarked on the journey that was to alter the course of history. Their mission: to discover the true source of the Nile. They had the daring to brave the ravages of nature, vicious attacks by the Somali, and life-threatening illness. We see the recriminations that erupt in London when Speke claims (rightly but without real proof) that Victoria is the source and how Burton is sidelined and eventually is lucky to find positions in the worst jobs in the foreign service. A sad end for one of the worlds greatest explorers. Read the book; see the movie. Both are worth the time. [1 copy available]

MR. AND MRS. SMITH
by Jane and John Smith as told to Dr. Mark Wexler. (Actually written by Cathy East Dubowski.) Screenplay by Simon Kinberg. Color movie stills section. Condition: NEW 2005 HarperCollins Trade Paperback, fist edition, first printing. Neat cover approach with Pitt on the front cover and Jolie on the back (depending on how you look at the covers). The cover is also it's own DJ. Content: Jane Smith is charming, sexy, successful, and intelligent, a rare combination of domestic goddess and savvy businesswoman. John Smith is wealthy, daring, athletic, and smart, a guy who drinks his scotch the way he's climbed to the top of the construction business: straight up. Although he and his equally perfect wife seem to be the ideal couple, the spark has faded from their marriage. That is, until they win free sessions with a counselor. What they keep hidden from their therapist and each other, they confide in the journals they've been coaxed to keep. Jane and John Smith are actually hired assassins working for rival organizations -- and their next assignments are ... each other! And so begins the kind of cat-and-mouse game that attracted Jane to John in the first place -- a roulette dangereuse that will either lead to a rekindled passion most married couples can only dream about ... or to cold-blooded murder. If you missed the hype for this movie, well, you must have been serving in Iraq. This 2005 movie was directed by Doug Liman and starred, of course, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Vince Vaughn [a neat acting turn for an actor I don't care much for], Adam Brody, Kerry Washington, & Chris Weitz. THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY
by C. J. Koch. Condition: Gently pre-read, good only, 1981 Sphere (London) paperback, first printing. Edgewear with pale spine & hinge creases. Interior clean & tight with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: One of the greatest of the political-adventure genre books & movies. Reviewer: "Intriguing thriller set in one of Indonesia's most turbulent times (c. 1965) follows the basic plot of most of that country's shadow puppet fables. Viz: The earthly balance of good and evil has lapsed, and the clueless but good-hearted hero finds himself aided by the unexpected attentions of a bold dwarf. There is so much going on, it's to be enjoyed on several levels. Innocence lost, cloak and daggery, true political intrigue, guy meets girl, expatriate sleaze, lessons in Indonesian culture: it's all there. Very nicely written with a perfect pace and memorable characters; Koch seems to be a great observer and decent researcher. So nicely composed was this book, the subsequent film in 1983 (featuring breathtakingly fresh performances by youngsters Sigourney Weaver and Mel Gibson) captured the best dialogue and the steamy atmosphere with apparent ease. Destined to be a classic, YLD is a story that takes hold and stays with you a long time." The 20-year ban on this book in Indonesia has recently been lifted. The movie was directed by Peter Weir (the golden age of Oz movies) and starred Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hunt (stunning Academy Award winning performance as Billy Kwan), Michael Murphy, Bill Kerr, and Bembol Roco. I know I've said it before, but if you haven't seen this one, dash - don't tarry - to your local Blockbuster and rent it. [1 copy available]
