by Bob Gale. Based on Screenplay by Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale. Movie poster art cover. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1979 Ballantine paperback, first printing. Problems: edge ear with diagonal crease top back cover corner. Content: One of the funniest films ever made - AND one of the best jitterbug scenes ever put on film. "It's been six days since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Panic grips California, supposedly the next target of the Japanese forces. Everywhere in California, people are suffering from war nerves. Chaos erupts all over the state. An Army Air Corps Captain, a civilian with a deranged sense of Nationalism, civilian defenders, and a Motor Pool crew all end up on the trail of a lost Japanese sub that has picked Hollywood as their own target. THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (Movie novelization)
by Terry Gilliam and Charles McKeown. Based on their screenplay. B&W illustrations by James Victore & Joyce Houlihan. Condition: UNREAD 1989 Applause Theatre Books Trade Paperback, first printing. Light edgewear top front cover corner. Content: Reviewer: "Usually known for his dark fantasy for adults, here Gilliam made a light-hearted fantasy for children, which truly is endearing. Now, Gilliam, with the help of Charles McKeown, has turned the film into a novel. One thing I liked best about the film is that it was visually beautiful. Obviously, that is missing from the book. But still, the book is written with humor and intelligence, which makes it a good read, even if you've never seen the film. It can be read both by children (who will like the adventure), and by adults (who will respect the wit). Overall, this is a warmhearted tribute to fantasy, and is recommended whether or not you've seen the film." The 1989 movie was directed by Gillam and starred John Neville, Eric Idle, Sarah Polley, Oliver Reed, Charles McKeown, Uma Thurman, Jonathan Pryce, Sting, Robin Williams, and Andrew MacLachlan. AMERICAN SPLENDOR (DVD & Limited Edition Comic Book)
directed by Shari Springer Berman. Includes a limited edition comic book in the box. Condition: NEW (still shrink-wrapped) 2004 HBO DVD, 101 minutes. Content: One of the most acclaimed films of 2003, this is also one of the most audaciously creative biographical movies ever made. Blending fact, fiction, and personal perspective from the comic books that inspired it, this marvelous portrait of Harvey Pekar--scowling curmudgeon, brow-beaten everyman, insightful chronicler of his own life, and frustrated file clerk at a Cleveland V.A. hospital--is an inspired amalgam of the media (comic books, TV, and film) that lifted Pekar from obscurity to the status of a pop-cultural icon. As played by Paul Giamatti in a master-stroke of casting, we see Pekar and his understanding wife (played by Hope Davis) as underdogs in a world full of obstacles, yet also infused with subtle hope and (gasp!) heartwarming perseverance. We also see the real Pekar, and this multifaceted commingling of "reel" and "real" turns American Splendor into a uniquely cinematic celebration of Pekar's life and, by extension, the tenacity of an unlikely American hero. The 2003 movie also starred Joey Krajcar, Daniel Tay, Chris Ambrose, Josh Hutcherson, and Vivienne Benesch. A great dark comedy. [1 copy available]

COLD SASSY TREE
by Olive Ann Burns. Cover painting The Feed Store by Janis Price. Condition: UNREAD 1994 Delta Trade Paperback, 25th printing (c. 1999). Small edgewear with light tanning to page edges. Content: Not really a comedy and not really a drama - but still a great book and a great movie. This book is told by Willy Tweedy, a fourteen-year-old boy living in a small, turn-of-the-century Georgia town. Will's hero is his Grandpa Rucker, who runs the town's general store, carrying all the power and privilege thereof. When Grandpa Rucker suddenly marries his store's young milliner barely three weeks after his wife's death, the town is set on its ear. Will Tweedy matures as he watches his family's reaction and adjustment to the news. He is trapped in the awkward phase of rising to adult expectations - driving the first cars in town - while still orchestrating wild pranks and starting scandalous gossip through his childish bragging. He seeks the wisdom of his grandpa and has his eyes opened to southern "ways" under the tutelage of Grandpa's new Yankee wife, Miss Love. Still, Will "couldn't figure out...why in the heck she would marry the old man." But Miss Love's influence seems to be transforming Grandpa into a younger man, and the answer unfolds slowly and sweetly as Will Tweedy becomes the confidante and staunch defender of this unlikely couple. The lessons of life and death, of piousness and irreverence, form the basis of memorable characters and a story that is both difficult to put down and hard to leave. This 1989 made-for-TV (Turner) movie was directed by Joan Tewkesbury and starred Faye Dunaway, the fabulous Richard Widmark (in his last movie, I believe), Frances Fisher, Lee Garlington, John M. Jackson, and Neil Patrick Harris as Will Tweedy. Absolutely wonderful! Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

A DELICATE BALANCE (The Play - Pulitzer Price)
by Edward Albee. Content: UNREAD, but sure not perfect, 1968 Pocket paperback, third printing. Light edge wear with tanning to front cover edges and moerate tanning to page edges. Very readable. Content: Reviewer: "Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play--winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. A dark comedy about unfulfilled lives, broken promises, and family jealousies. A tragedy at times hilarious, the stylized piece is an examination of friendship contrasted with family, in which the playwright creates six delicous characters--roles actors especially love and often perform brilliantly. Katherine Hepburn's filmed version comes to mind--a near perfect expression of the matriarch Agnes, who has several problems: her alcoholic sister is drinking in the living room, her daughter is coming home after a failed 4th marriage, and her friends Edna and Harry have decided to move in because they are "afraid" of something. Agnes's husband Tobias is polite, detached, and reasonable. Against bristling tension, the author uses drunken Claire as comic counterpoint to brilliant effect, giving her an accordion (of all things) as prop with which to accent and poke fun. (There's a wonderful sight gag near the end where this character, who isn't supposed to have one drink, is discovered holding two.) We also smile when mousy Edna tries to re-decorate Agnes's home and speaks to the divorcing Julia as if she were her own daughter. (How easily shyness moves to assertiveness, then imperceptibly to cruelty.) So we laugh to keep from crying--but laugh we do! And although Agnes is unforgettable, nevertheless it is Tobias who gets the climactic "aria," an attempt to put his house in order. The dramatist calls our bluff on what we mean by "friends," fusing big ideas in three elegant acts, crystallizing mysterious beauty from carefully chosen words. The result is a theatrical touchstone, one of Edward Albee's many masterpieces, a magnificent gem of a play." The 1974 movie was direted by Tony Richardson and starred Hepburn, Betsy Blair, Paul Scofield, Lee Remick, Joseph Cotton, and Kate Reid. [1 copy available]

DOC HOLLYWOOD (DVD) [1991]
directed by Condition: NEW (still shink-wrapped) Warner DVD. Remainder mark top back box. Content: At first glance, this 1991 comedy looks like another formulaic fluff-piece with a standard fish-out-of-water scenario--in this case a hotshot young doctor (Michael J. Fox) whose cross-country drive to become a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon is interrupted when he crashes in the rural hamlet of Grady, South Carolina. But as Fox's character is urged by the folksy locals to stay--an offer made tempting by his romance with a law student (Julie Warner)--this unassuming little movie just gets better and better thanks to a sharp script and a splendid supporting cast. Well, okay ... maybe Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda aren't used to the fullest of their abilities, but for the most part this is a charming and surprisingly intelligent comedy that's good enough to compare favorably to My Cousin Vinny, a film with which it shares much in common. Fox has all the right moves to make his character both bullish and ultimately agreeable, and Julie Warner's performance may leave you wondering why this fine actress didn't immediately rise to stardom. Other stars: David Ogden Stiers, Frances Sternhagen (The Closer), and William Cowart. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

DOGMA (DVD)
by Lions Gate Films. Condition: NEW (still shink-wrapped) 2001 Lions Gate DVD. Includes a Bonus Digital copy for PC & PSP. Content: [One of the best movies ever made, IMHO.] WARNING: Language, language, language - wow! Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they'd destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It's up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith's cast is exceptional--with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael--and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly... subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE: A Novel
by Fannie Flagg. Condition: UNREAD 1998 McGraw-Hill Trade Paperback, second printing, movie edition. Tiny edgewear with pale tanning to page edges. Content: Set in a small Alabama train stop town in the 1930s, this gem of a book almost could have been shelved as just another light romantic comedy. Various women's voices tell anecdotes of Whistle Stop, as the chapters jump back and forth through time. We hear from Mrs. Threadgoode, reminiscing fondly from her nursing home in the 1980s, and the chatty Dot Weems, editor of the gossipy town newsletter (1929-1969), and then listen in on spirited dialogue set in the town of Whistle Stop itself. The storytellers never find use for the label "lesbian," nor do they see fit to take us behind closed doors, but this is nevertheless the irresistible story of a fierce and true love between two women, Idgie and Ruth. After Idgie saves Ruth from an abusive marriage, these two friends become partners in running the Whistle Stop Cafe, where no one, "not even hobos and colored," is turned away for inability to pay. Readers are set down in the corner booth to eavesdrop on the comings and goings of an array of eccentric, ragtag characters who drop in for buttermilk biscuits, Big George's barbecue, and, eventually, news about their own hometown murder mystery. The 1991 movie was directed by Jon Avnet and starred Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Jessica Tandy, Cicely Tyson, Chris O'Donnell, Stan Shaw, and Fannie Flagg (in a small part). The ultimate chick-flick, IMHO. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE FULL MONTY (Movie Novelization)
by Wendy Holden. Based on a Screenplay by Simon Beaufoy. Movie cover. Condition: NEW 1998 HarperCollins Trade Paperback, second printing. Movie stills back cover. Content: The Full Monty is a brilliant and original comedy about six men driven to face their fears of inadequacy and loss in hard times. Broke, out of work and on the verge of losing their wives and children, they come up with a desperate, brilliant plan: Make like Chippendale dancers and strip for cash! This is the story of a last-ditch attempt by a group of working-class men to redeem themselves as reliable in the eyes of their community. In scenes as hysterical as they are tender, they discover that "the full monty" requires more than dexterity, a fit body and the right moves; and that the confidence they need can only come from stripping bare the deeper issues that trouble their individual lives. HANGING UP
by Delia Ephron. Movie still cover. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 2000 Ballantine paperback, first printing. Tiny edge wear. There is a pale spine crease but the book is so tight, I'm not sure it has been read. Content: The telephone plays an integral part in screenwriter and nonfiction author Ephron's (How to Eat Like a Child) humorous, if somewhat uncomfortable, look at the senility and death of a parent. Narrator Eve Mozell loves to chat on the phone, playing out nearly all of her relationships by talking into a plastic mouthpiece. Now 44 but still in the role of the unremarkable, overcompensating middle daughter, Eve finds the care of her elderly, alcoholic father foisted upon her by her sisters Georgia, an overbearing magazine editor, and Madeline, a dippy soap opera actress. With little support from either her work-absorbed husband, a public radio commentator, or her teenaged son, Eve struggles to understand the Mozell family neuroses. Flashbacks highlight her parents' scotch-soaked divorce, her mother's subsequent abandonment of the family and her father's descent into alcoholism and general obnoxiousness. Appropriately, a telephone relationship with a stranger helps Eve come to terms with the simultaneous love and disgust she feels for her father. All the phone talk makes the narrative dialogue-heavy, and most of Ephron's characters are gratingly self-absorbed. However, Eve's wry humor and gentle tolerance for these eccentrics and the foibles of life leaven the proceedings nicely. The 2000 movie was directed by Diane Keaton and starred Keaton, Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, Walter Matthau, Adam Arkin and Cloris Leachman. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

HANNAH AND HER SISTERS (Screenplay & DVD - 2 for 1)
by Woody Allen. Farrow, Hershey, and Wiest cover. B&W movie stills illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1987 Vintage original Trade Paperback, first printing. Name inside front cover. The DVD is new & shrink-wrapped. Content: Hannah and Her Sisters follows a multitude of characters: Hannah (Mia Farrow), who plays den mother to her extended family; her sister Lee (Barbara Hershey), emotional and a bit of a flake, who's involved with a much older artist (Max Von Sydow), who treats her like a child; and Hannah's other sister, Holly (Dianne Wiest), a neurotic who feels incapable of managing her life. Hannah's husband Elliot (Michael Caine) falls in love with Lee, which sets off a series of upheavals. Allen gives one of his best performances as Hannah's ex-husband Mickey, who--much like Allen himself--is obsessed with death and unhappiness. But a simple summary doesn't begin to capture the warmth and intimacy of this movie; though the story follows a capsizing family, the outcome is surprising, joyous, and richly human. The 1986 movie was directed by and written by, of course, Woody Allen, and also starred Lewis Black, Carrie Fisher, Maureen O'Sullivan (Farrow's mom), Lloyd Nolan, Daniel Stern, Julie Kavner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and a cameo by the great Bobby Short. LE DIVORCE
by Diane Johnson. Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts movie cover art. Condition: NEW 2003 Plume Trade Paperback, movie edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: Diane Johnson updates the transatlantic novel so gorgeously rendered by Henry James, Edith Wharton, William Dean Howells, and Nathaniel Hawthorne; evokes the spirit of such expatriates sojourning in Paris as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald; and mines the pathos of modern fiction in creating this wonderful and important novel. Isabel Walker, eerily reminiscent of James's Isabel Archer, is a young film-school dropout who travels to Paris to aid her stepsister, who is going through a divorce. Isabel's California cool, American freedoms, and feminist slants comingle, successfully and fractiously, with the customs, biases, and complex sexuality of modern Europe. The result modulates between introspection and hilarity, and a quick, Hollywood-inspired sweep of violent action in the end doesn't undermine the author's mastery of Old World vs. New -- in fact, it provides an ironic scrim. The 2003 film was directed by James Ivory and starred kate Hudson, Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, the wonderful Leslie Caron, and a cast of interesting French actors. [1 copy available]

LIVING IN OBLIVION (Screenplay)
by Tom DiCillo. B&W movie stills & photos illustrate. Condition: Used 1995 Plune Trade Paperback, first pritning. Edge wear, hinge crease, with gift inscription inside front cover. This book has been read, re-read, and passed on. Tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "This is the screenplay for a highly entertaining, if little known independent film - is a pleasure to read. In Tom DiCillo's economic prose, the joys, frustrations and occasionally maddening incivilities of making a low-budget film come vibrantly to life. What's more, the unique, and complex structure (switching from color to black-and-white film stock, clearly indicated as part of the script; and a surprising use of dream-sequences throughout) add a textured layer to the story. I don't think it's necessary to see the film before reading the screenplay (though it can't hurt!) because the characters come to life through their individual foibles, ambitions and unexpected emotional entanglements. The story never bogs down in filmmaking minutiae but you still get a vivid sense of what it's like to stagger onto a make-shift film set at 4 a.m., drinking bad coffee and having trouble getting into character. It's also enormously sympathetic towards and forgiving of each individual character, from the macho cinematographer to the egomaniacal leading man, and most especially, the erstwhile director trying somehow to hold everything together. Highly recommended!" The 1995 movie was written and directed by Tom DiCillo and starred the always strange, always fascinating Steve Buscemi, Dermot Mulroney, Catherine Keener, Danielle von Zerneck, and Kevin Corrigan. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (Movie companion)
by Michael Hoffman (Director). Wonderful color movie stills illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1999 HarperEntertainment soft cover, first priting. Light edge wear. Content: This glossy companion to Michael Hoffman's film adaptation of Shakespeare's classic romance is not merely the text of a screenplay. While it does contain Hoffman's complete script, which radically reworks Shakespeare's play for the modern screen, it also limns the flourishes and creativity of his personal vision. The book is filled with the director's commentary on the play's events and the reasons behind his arresting choices. Readers are afforded the rare opportunity to see production designers' drawings of sets and costumes and to peruse art by Moreau, Waterhouse, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the ancient Etruscans alongside shots from the film that these pieces inspired. Scores of sumptuous photographs accompany the text. Sidebars include commentary by actors Rupert Everett, Calista Flockhart, Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Stanley Tucci, who portray the chief characters. Hoffman's fascinating introduction relates how he chose his cast, how he imagines Shakespeare's magical world, and why he decided to set the drama in the 19th century: "[The play's] issues of conditioning and subversion led me naturally to the late Victorian setting. In a world dominated by convention, but poised on the verge of a dramatic shift, there seemed no better visual metaphor for the representation of Self than stiff collars, high necklines, tight corsets, and silly accessories. (And then to lose it all in the dark, elemental night)." Additional cast of the 1999 movie are: Christian Bale, Anna Friel, the great David Strathairn, Roger Rees, Sophie Marceau, and Bernard Hill. MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR
by John Nichols. B&W illustrations by Rini Templeton. Condition: UNREAD 1966 Ballantine paperback, first printing. Light shelf wear with pale tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "When Joe Mondragon illegally irrigates a puny beanfield, he starts WWIII (New Mexico style) and becomes the unwitting, reluctant symbol of this battle between the haves and the have nots. The book is absolutely hilarious with its wry yet rich descriptions of the people and the cultures clashing in Milagro, NM. But underneath, the end is near and everyone knows it, is resigned to it, but will fight to hold on for as long as possible. What could have been a dull exercise in race relations, regional history, and economic theory, is instead brought to wonderful, earthy life in this charming novel that will make you think, laugh, and perhaps even shed a tear or two." The 1988 movie was directed by Robert Redford and the screenplay was by John Nichols. The wonderful cast (primarily Latino actors): Ruben Blades, Sonja Braga, Julie Carmen, Chick Vennera, Carlos Riquelme (who steals the movie as Amarante), Fredy Fender, and Tony Genaro. They had only 2 things in common. Their hatred for Captain Morton, the scrawny, incompetent, palm-tree-loving Popeye who made their lives a living hell - and their love for Mister Roberts, the idealistic second-in-command who fought their battles and shared their zany antics, but who secretly dreamed only of the glory and bravery of war." MYRA BRECKINRIDGE
by Gore Vidal. Condition: Good only, 1968 Bantam paperback, first printing. Hinge & spine crease with small edgewear. Interior clean but tanning. Content: This is a genuinely radical and subversive novel that strikes forcibly at the very heart of traditional American values, particularly at the country's conservative sexual mores, though most readers seem to miss the 'unacceptable truth' that the book shrewdly exposes. Oddly, the disastrous film version of 1970, presently in constant rotation on multiple cable channels, made the same point more clearly, which was perhaps somewhat responsible for its critical and box office failure. The movie plot: Myron Breckinridge goes to Europe to have a sex change, and comes back to America as the sexy, man-hating Myra. She enrolls at the acting school of her uncle, conservative Western star Buck Loner, insisting that she is Myron's widow. The movie was directed by Michael Sarne and starred Rex Reed, Raquel Welch, Mae West, John Huston, and a very young Tom Selleck and Farrah Fawcett. Read the book; skip the movie. [1 copy available]

POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE
by Carrie Fisher. Condition: UNREAD 1988 Pocket paperback, first printing. Bookstore embossed stamp bottom title page. Content: Reviewer: "Carrie Fisher's debut novel is a hoot. The language is very fluid, seeping straight into my imagination with ease; the scenes are sometimes hilarious and other times scary but masterfully written, very impressive for a first book! For those who know anything about Carrie Fisher, they will see that the book is semi-autobiographical; sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I loved the myriad of original analogies and wonderful sentences, the book might be small and a fast read but fun and meaningful at the same time. At one time Carrie compares Suzanne's life to bread in a bakery with her nose stuck on the wrong side of the window, watching life pass by. Few passages really jolted me with wisdom and hilarious comparison to inanimate objects added certain amount of depth to the all ready semi serious book." The 1990 movie was directed by Mike Nichols and the screenplay by Fisher. THE ROACHES HAVE NO KING
by Daniel Evan Weiss. Condition: NEW 1994 High Risk Trade paperback, second US printing. Content: 'Woody Allen meets Kafka in this wlidly original and funny account of a cockroach consplracy...A novel to make you laugh and squirm' Observer 'The most imaginative and complex novel since Patrick Suskind's Perfume...an implausible, hilarious and beautifully written tale' Vox 'A daring original. A nasty, arch and occasionally funny novel about cockroaches. In an unnamed city (seems like New York), Ira Fishblatt, a bleeding-heart liberal Legal Aid lawyer, is rejected by his live-in lover, The Gypsy. This is much to the dismay of the other inhabitants of Ira's place: hundreds of cockroaches with names like Bismarck, Rosa Luxemburg, and Julia Child (they were born in bookshelves), who enjoyed The Gypsy's messiness and food-throwing. After a brief despondent period, Ira meets the overweight, matronly Ruth Grubstein. Cosseted into the role of good Jewish boy, Ira goes to such lengths to please Ruth that he renovates the kitchen, forcing the kibitzing circle of Blattelae Germanicae out of their homes. The roaches, led by their ringleader Numbers, who's also the book's narrator, swear vengeance. They disrupt a dinner party of Ira and Ruth and their neighbors, the Wainscotts, by causing a blackout that, in a good bit of screwball writing, forces Ira and Elizabeth Wainscott into close quarters in the dark. But Plan A fails, and thus begins Numbers's long journey of the soul to find a more effective revenge on humankind. What follows are comically gruesome scenes described from Numbers's roachy point of view: from toilets, in Ira and Ruth's bed, in the hair of a coke dealer named Rufus, in the sewer system. Weiss's broad ethnic comedy--in dialogue between Jewish Ira, black Rufus, and old-money racist Wainscott--is bracing at first, then flattens. A well-modulated comic novel (one hesitates to say ``picaresque''), only for those with really, really wicked sensibilities. This book was most likely the inspiration for the 1996 movie Joe's Apartment. It was directed by John Payson and starred Jerry O'Connell, Megan Ward, Billy West, Don Ho, David Huddleston, and Robert Vaughn. Sick but cute! Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

by Tom Stoppard. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1968 Grove Press edition, 13th printing. Edge wear with tanning to page edges. Content: Two minor characters from the play, "Hamlet" stumble around unaware of their scripted lives and unable to deviate from them. SKIPPING CHRISTMAS: A Novel
by John Grisham. Cover art by Andrew Davidson. Condition: NEW 2001 Doubleday small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, second printing. Perfect. Content: John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25. Grisham's story revolves around a typical middle-aged American couple, Luther and Nora Krank. On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that they are alone for the holiday. So Luther makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision. Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how this tight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. The 2004 movie starred Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd, M. Emmet Walsh, Elizabeth Franz, Cheech Marin, & the wonderful character actor, Austin Pendleton. Book is much better than the movie. [1 copy available.]

Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). by Irvine Welsh. Movie stills front cover. Condition: Gently pre-read, 1996 Norton Trade Paperback, third printing. Problems: edge wear with light diagonal creases front cover corners; edge wear; light foxing fore edges. Interoir clean. Content: Welsh's controversial first novel, set on the heroin-addicted fringe of working-class youth in Edinburgh, is yet another exploration of the dark side of Scottishness. The main character, Mark Renton, is at the center of a clique of nihilistic slacker junkies with no hopes and no possibilities, and only "mind-numbing and spirit-crushing" alternatives in the straight world they despise. This particular slice of humanity has nothing left but the blackest of humor and a sharpness of wit. American readers can use the glossary in the back to translate the slang and dialect--essential, since the dialogue makes the book. This is a bleak vision sung as musical comedy. THE WAR OF THE ROSES
by Warren Adler. Cover art by Marvin Mattelson. . Condition: Gently pre-read, ex-library book - 1981 Warner Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Has few library markings. Content: In 1989, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito reunited for a third time to fabulous effect in this dark, disturbing comedy of martial trauma and revenge. Douglas and Turner, in career-best performances, are the materialistic, consumer-driven Roses of the title (Oliver and Barbara) whose seemingly perfect marriage has soured beyond repair; their only point of contact, aside from their two college-bound kids (Heather Fairfield & Sean Astin) , is their meticulously maintained dream house, which Douglas bought and Turner decorated to perfection. When Turner gets a taste of financial independence, she asks Douglas for divorce -- all she wants is the house and everything in it. He laughs at her and she punches him in the face. Things only get worse from there, as nasty divorce proceedings (with DeVito as Douglas's lawyer) give way to insults, threats, ruined dinner parties, and pet abuse. And through it all, the Roses begin destroying their beloved home and its contents, just to spite each other. DeVito, who also directed, takes Michael Leeson's blacker-than-black screenplay and gives it a hyperstylized spin, complete with skewed camera angles and wonderfully expressionistic cinematography (by Stephen Burum) as Douglas and Turner barricade themselves in their house, both refusing to give an inch. Shocking for a mainstream studio picture, with its unsympathetic protagonists, escalating bitterness, and disturbing finale, Roses is a poisonously funny valentine to both marriage and '80s materialism, tempered only by its framing device as a cautionary tale. While the book is somewhat different, as is the ending, don't miss either the book or the movie. If you don't like dark comedy, skip it.

Problems: hinge creases with edge wear and rubbings back cover. While the book is clean & tight, the pages show light tanning. Good+. Content: One of the funniest movies ever made, IMHO. Reviewer: "Mild mannered Dr. Howard Bannister is a professor of musicology at the Ames Conservatory of Music in Ames, Iowa. With his straight laced and controlling fiancée Eunice Burns, Howard is in San Francisco to attend the Congress of American Musicologists convention hosted by Frederick Larrabee. The Larrabee Foundation has shortlisted two finalists for the $20,000 Larrabee Grant, the two being pompous Hugh Simon and Howard, whose research involves prehistoric man making music with igneous rocks. Howard's life in San Francisco is turned upside down when he meets Judy Maxwell, a klutzy, directionless but brilliant young woman whose life is spent studying at one educational institution after another, her stint at each being until she's kicked out. Further complications ensue as Howard, Judy, wealthy Mrs. Van Hoskins and reporter Mr. Smith - the latter two who are staying at the same hotel as Howard - all have the identical red plaid overnight bag respectively carrying Howard's igneous rocks, Judy's clothes, Mrs. Van Hoskins jewels and top secret government documents, the latter two which are eyed by others who are trying to get their hands on the contents. Written by Huggo" The 1972 movie starred Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, Sorrell Brooke, Michael Murphy, and in her first movie, the great Madeline Kahn. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Don't miss it.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (Movie Screenplay)
by Nora Ephron. Movie still front cover. Condition: NEW 1992 Knopf Trade Paperback, third printing. Content: You haven't seen "Harry & Sally?" Well, here's a quick review: " Screwball comedy is dead. At least it was after motion pictures became colored, and more and more expensive, filled with action and meaningless special effects. "When Harry Met Sally...", however, marks the rebirth of that genre long forgotten. And just like Rob Reiner's 1989 film, Nora Ephron's screenplay transports the charm, the wit and likeability of characters that are not heroic stereotypes or unreal personalities, but everyday people with everyday problems, striving for a not so everyday happy-ending. Featuring the hilarious fake-orgasm scene that easily found its place in movie history, and one of the most touching declarations of love ever written, "When Harry Met Sally..." is a modern classic, a must-read for future screenwriters and playwrights, just as well as for everyone with a sense of humor and a romantic core." Starring: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher (my favorite), the late, great Bruno Kirby, Steven Ford (the President's son) and Harley Jane Kozak. Great movie! Don't miss it. [1 copy available]
