AFFLICTION
by Russell Banks. Nick Nolte cover. Condition Gently pre-read 1996 HarperPerennial Trade Paperback, 16th printing. Pale tanning to page edges. Not crisp. Content: Affliction transmutes Banks's painful past into fiction. His divorced protagonist, Wade Whitehouse, 41, is imprisoned by fate in Lawford, New Hampshire, a hell frozen over. He digs wells for chump change, lives in a trailer, drinks, and alienates his daughter by dragging her to a miserable Halloween costume party. In two weeks' time, Wade demolishes his pitiable hopes of family happiness, drawn into a rigorously plausible series of disastrous deaths. In flashbacks to his Dad-abused youth, we see how Wade wound up such a Dostoyevskian clown. Banks has a mind of winter: when Wade sees his dead parent, the scene unfolds with the cold logic of ice-crystal formation. The story is narrated by Wade's kid brother, the family's sole escapee to college, in a cool, distanced way. Both brothers contain aspects of Banks, but each breaks free of autobiography. This is one haunting novel. The 1997 movie was directed by Paul Schrader and starred Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, James Coburn, Willem Dafoe and Mary Beth Hurt. [1 copy available]

ALL THE KING'S MEN (Pulitzer Prize)
by Robert Penn Warren. Condition Gently pre-read 1951 Bantam paperback, first printing. Top edge appears to have been trimmed - either during binding or, for some unknown reason, later on. Binder's glue string down spine with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: This landmark book is a loosely fictionalized account of Governor Huey Long of Louisiana, one of the nation's most astounding politicians. The book tells the story of Willie Stark, a southern-fried politician who builds support by appealing to the common man and playing dirty politics with the best of the back-room deal-makers. Though Stark quickly sheds his idealism, his right-hand man, Jack Burden -- who narrates the story -- retains it and proves to be a thorn in the new governor's side. Stark becomes a successful leader, but at a very high price, one that eventually costs him his life. The award-winning book is a play of politics, society and personal affairs, all wrapped in the cloak of history. There have been two movies made of this book, the first and best one, IMHO, was the 1949 version directed by Robert Rossen. It starred Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, John Derek, Mercedes McCambridge, and Anne Seymour. Academy Award to Crawford. The second movie was the 2006 movie directed by Steven Zaillian and starring Sean Penn (much too young for the part, IMHO), Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Clarkson, James Gandolfini, Kevin Dunn, and Frederic Forrest. AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD
by the great Peter Matthiessen. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1972 Bantam paperback, second printing. Light shelfwear hinge crease with small edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Content: Set in the South American jungle, this thriller follows the clash between two misplaced gringos--one who has come to convert the Indians to Christianity, and one who has been hired to kill them. Martin and Hazel Quarrier are small-town fundamentalist missionaries sent to the jungles of South America to convert the Indians. Their remote mission was previously run by the Catholics, before the natives murdered them all. They are sent by the pompous Leslie Huben, who runs the missionary effort in the area but who seems more concerned about competing with his Catholic 'rivals' than in the Indians themselves. Hazel is terrified of the Indians while Martin is fascinated. Soon American pilot Lewis Moon joins the Indian tribe but is attracted by Leslie's young wife, Andy. Can the interaction of these characters and cultures, and the advancing bulldozers of civilization, avoid disaster? The 1991 movie starred the wonderful Tom Berenger, John Lithgow, Daryl Hannah, Aidan Quinn, Tom Waits, & Kathy Bates. [1 copy available]

CATHOLICS: A Novel AND The Conflict (DVD Movie of the Book) 2 for 1
by Brian Moore. Condition: Gently pre-read 1972 McClelland & Stewart (Toronto) slim hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). The interior has no problems, but the DJ does have problems: repaired nics top edge with tanning to the edges and rubbings to the gilt lettering. Content: On a remote isle off the Kerry coast, a group of monks has decided to take a stand against its masters in Rome - contrary to modem edicts, the brethren have chosen to retain the old traditions and ceremonies of worship. Their ancient practices do not go unnoticed however, and as they start to attract crowds of curious tourists pilgrims even - someone has to stop them. But when Father James Kinsella arrives with strict orders from the Vatican, he does not find, as he anticipates, a community united in defiance, but one riven by dogma and doubt. In this masterly evocation of an island brotherhood, Brian Moore explores the subtle boundaries that shift between duty and faith, between obedience and dissent. The 1973 made-for-TV movie is called The Conflict and was directed by Jack Gold and starred a very young Martin Sheen, Trevor Howard, Cyril Cusack, and Sir Michael Gambon ("Dumbledore"). It is a thought provoking take on the Catholic Church proclaiming that Mass would be said in a country's native language and no long in Latin. This is a digitally remastered DVD. Questions welcome. THE CHRISTMAS SHOES
by Donna VanLiere. Wrap-around cover art by Anne Twomey. Condition: NEW 2001 St. Martin's small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Content: Based on a song ("The Christmas Shoes") by NewSong, this book introduces us to Robert Layton, an ambitious lawyer who sacrifices his youthful idealism to become a partner and specialize in bankruptcy law. His ambition backfires, though, when his wife, Kate, announces that she wants a divorce from her often absent husband, throwing family life into chaos right before the holidays. Meanwhile, on the other side of the tracks, another couple anticipates impending tragedy as young mechanic Robert Andrews tries to prepare his family for the coming death of his attractive wife, Maggie, from ovarian cancer. The two families' lives critically intersect when Layton goes Christmas shopping and encounters Andrews's young son, Nathan, trying to buy a pair of shoes for his mother as a going-away present. When the hard-hearted lawyer sees that the boy is short of cash, he ponies up for the purchase. The transformation that follows makes for a heartwarming story, and VanLiere writes some affecting family scenes that contrast the material poverty of the Andrewses with the spiritual poverty of the Laytons. This was made into a CBS TV movie (2002) starring Rob Lowe, Kimberly Williams, Max Morrow, Maria del Mar, Hugh Thompson, and Dorian Harewood. Directed by Andy Wolk. Viewers give the movie 5 stars and the book 4 stars. [1 copy available]

FOUR SCREENPLAYS OF INGMAR BERGMAN
translated from the Swedish by Lars Malmstrom and David Kushner. Three B&W movie stills & photos section. Condition: Gently pre-read 1960 Simon & Schuster hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. While the book is in very good condition, the DJ shows significant edge wear and one medium chip top edge. Content: Reviewer: The four screenplays are: Smiles of a Summer Night; The Seventh Seal; Wild Strawberries; and The Magician. Reviewer: "What strikes me most about Bergman's screenplays is the tremendous literary value of them, aside from their being an invaluable supplementary resource to the films. Reading the screenplays, one learns to catch the more subtle pieces of the films, sees the parts that were meant to be emphasized, the parts left out, and can examine closer the dialogue and events to extract their meanings. The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, of course, are universally regarded as milestones and alone make the book a worthy purchase; but I find most refreshing the addition of the Magician, an overlooked favorite of mine that has always seemed to me a great precursor to Tarkovsky. Even if you don't have the films or haven't seen them, however, Bergman's screenplays stand well enough on their own and deserve to be in any library of literature." [1 copy available]

GIANT
by Edna Ferber. Condition UNREAD 1970 Fawcett Crest paperback, first printing. Tiny edgewear with moderate tanning to interior page edges. Content: It is almost impossible to discuss this book without discussing the great move made from it. Reviewer: "Ferber painstickingly tells the story of Texas, from its very beginnings to the oil boom. Altogether, the book spans about three decades, from the years after WW1 to the industrial boom of the 1950's, but several interludes give you an insight about the history of the state. One can only be surprised, how true the movie is to the novel. Although some scene settings have been changed to fit with the length of the movie, the film captures almost every single dialogue contained in the book. One can arguably say, that Ferber needs many pages to deal with a single problem (and she has already dealt with this one in other works like "Show Boat"), racism, but hey, it has taken a long time and it will take some time until this problem is finally solved. The novel (and the film) do not always portray a sunny side of the Texian population of that period, but somehow the whole story got a landmark of the state and Dimtri Tiomkin's music for the movie is a kind of a Texian hymn. In my mind, this is one of the true highlights of 20TH century literature. The 1956 movie (directed by George Stevens) starred Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, and a host of new comers (Sal Mineo, Dennis Hopper) and older character actors. This is a movie that still holds up today. [1 copy available]

Content: "This 1932 Pulitzer Prize winning novel is still a standout today. Deceptive in its simplicity, it is a story built around a flawed human being and a teetering socio-economic system, as well as one that is layered with profound themes. This is the story of peasant Wang Lung - of the family he founded that would one day become a powerful dynasty; of the gods he implored, sometimes with humility, sometimes with anger; and, above all, of the earth that sustained him. Interior quote from Jennifer Jones (movie Miss Dove). Content: This is the warm, wonderful story of an extraordinary schoolteacher and her impact on a small town. "The story is well-written, depicting a dedicated teacher who truly cares about her children but is not sentimental about them. Instead, she instills values and behaviors that will serve them well all through their lives. Her own behavior is impeccable, and she is a moral touchstone to the entire town and the several generations whom she has taught." GOOD WILL HUNTING: A Screenplay
by Matt Damon & Ben Affleck. Intro by Gus Van Sant. B&W movie stills illustrate. Condition NEW 1997 Hyperion/Miramax Trade Paperback, 6th printing. Very slight "lift" to front cover fore edge. Content: The story of an angry genius who works as a janitor at MIT, his friends, his therapist, and how he turns his life around. As director Gus Van Sant observes in the introduction to Matt Damon's and Ben Affleck's screenplay Good Will Hunting, the two young actors somewhat resemble the characters they play in the film: they're best friends, and Affleck (who plays Chuckie) habitually chauffeurs Damon (Will), who doesn't drive. Van Sant says we can see how badly Damon drives by watching the film's last scene, in which he is actually driving the car with the camera mounted on it. But Damon and company write better than he drives; this script contains some of the boldest, best monologues since Pulp Fiction. Van Sant and cast member Robin Williams helped the young actors tame the tigers in their cranial tanks, trimming the script into a precision instrument. Though the stills from the film are not perfectly matched to their places in the script, this story remains as much a joy to read as it is towatch on the big screen. Academy Awards for Damon & Affleck and Robin Williams. The 1997 also starred the wonderful Minnie Driver. [1 copy available]

HOWARDS END
by E. M. Forster. Movie still cover art. Condition Gently pre-read 1992 Signet paperback, 6th printing. Spine creases with small edgewear. Interior clean with light tanning to page edges. Good reading copy. Content: Like all of Forster's work, this book concerns itself with class, nationality, economic status, and how each of these affects personal relationships. It follows the intertwined fortunes of the Schlegel sisters, Margaret and Helen, and the Wilcox family over the course of several years. The Schlegels are intellectuals, devotees of art and literature. The Wilcoxes, on the other hand, can't be bothered with the life of the mind or the heart, leading, instead, outer lives of "telegrams and anger" that foster "such virtues as neatness, decision, and obedience, virtues of the second rank, no doubt, but they have formed our civilization." Helen, after a brief flirtation with one of the Wilcox sons, has developed an antipathy for the family; Margaret, however, forms a brief but intense friendship with Mrs. Wilcox, which is cut short by the older woman's death. When her family discovers a scrap of paper requesting that Henry give their home, Howards End, to Margaret, it precipitates a spiritual crisis among them that will take years to resolve. The 1992 movie was directed by James Ivory and starred Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Emmma Thompson, and Helena Bonham-Carter. Academy Award for the screenplay. [1 copy available]

Content: A bestseller in 1933, and subsequently adapted into two beloved and controversial films, Imitation of Life has played a vital role in ongoing conversations about race, femininity, and the American Dream. He declines at first, but then his companion, Bagger Vance, offers to caddy for him. It becomes apparent that Vance is more than a companion; he is the man's mentor and spiritual advisor. Although looked upon with disdain by the golfers and spectators, Vance, who is black, counsels Junah to look for his Authentic Swing. The symbolism is apparent; Junah finds not only his golf swing, but also himself. Pressfield's story will be of interest to students. Its mysticism promotes thought, and golf references are simple enough for nonplayers. This one of my favorite movies! This 2000 film, directed by Robert Redford, starred Will Smith, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron (who steals the movie, IMHO), the great Bruce McGill, Joel Gretsch, and J. Michael Moncrief as the young Hardy Greaves. Redford knows how to spin a story. The movie is a bit different from the book, but close enough. Don't miss the book or the movie. [1 copy available]

LEGENDS OF THE FALL (Movie Edition)
by Jim Harrison. Pitt, Hopkins, Quinn movie still front cover. Condition UNREAD 1994 Delta Trade paperback, 16th printing. Light rubbings hinges. Interior clean & tight with light tanning to page edges. Content: The publication of this magnificent trilogy of short novels — Legends Of The Fall, Revenge, and The Man Who Gave Up His Name — confirmed Jim Harrison's reputation as one of the finest American writers of his generation. These absorbing novellas explore the theme of revenge and the actions to which people resort when their lives or goals are threatened, adding up to an extraordinary vision of the twentieth-century man. Reviewer: "While the movie's most notable qualities are a breath of story and an epic scope, the book is beautiful for its economy of words and distant style. Written in the third person, as opposed to the film's heavy handed first person, the perspective is all knowing, yet reveals few details. The author brings the characters to life to some degree, but what is amazing is that they are interesting given their one dimensionality. The story, short as it is, contains much less of the deep intertwined relations of the movie, but I believe that makes it much improved over the screen version. While everyone focuses on the title story, the other two that are included are also enjoyable. As a read, each of the stories is quite quick and complete." [1 copy available]

MADE FOR EACH OTHER (DVD)
by MGM / Selznick Studio. Condition NEW (shrink-wrapped) 2004 DVD release of the 1939 Black & White movie. Content: Produced in a time when films were both literally and figuratively black and white, this movie was unique in its effective blending of the comedic, the dramatic, and, as perhaps some would insensitively say, the melodramatic. Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry, and quickly have a baby. But while they--and the audience--are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness. Lombard and Stewart--and the genuinely good people they portray--are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition, but the Masons' is a path many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell's universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It's an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit, but its ultimate sentiment--one that celebrates the kindness of strangers--is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine. The movie was directed by John Cromwell and also stars Charles Coburn, Lucille Watson, and Eddie Quillan. [1 copy available]

THE MAJESTIC (DVD)
directed by Frank Darabont. 152 minutes. Condition NEW (still shrink-wrapped) 2002 Warner DVD with remainder mark top back box cover. Content: This is an old-fashioned throwback replete with a 1950s B-script and halcyon values like patriotism, true love, and clean fun. Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a Hollywood scriptwriter with a sexy gal, a screenplay under his belt, and his big break on the horizon. But when his name is mistakenly given to the House Un-American Activities Committee, Appleton's dreams of success in the biz quickly unravel. An ensuing car accident leaves him without a memory but a great opportunity--as a small town's Luke Trimble, war hero and all-around swell guy, with whom he happens to bear an uncanny physical resemblance. Of course, there's a beautiful woman (Sandra Sinclair) who waited for his return from the war, an endearing old dad (Martin Landau), and the magical Majestic movie house to renovate and reopen. As Appleton's memory eventually catches up to him, however, The Majestic veers off toward Mr. Smith Goes to Washington territory, complete with a monologue on the First Amendment. This is a beautiful, Capra-esque movie! Don't miss it. In addition to Carrey and Landau, there is a very talented supporting cast: Laurie Holden, David Ogden Stiers, James Whitmore, Allen Garfield, Jeffrey DeMunn, Bob Balaban, Hal Holbrook, and Karl Bury. The cover shows edge wear with rubbings and creases. The interior pages havae notes and underlining with page tanning. The value of the book is in the movie stills. Content: This is the complete and unabridged play. Reviewer: "[This] is a Tennessee Williams play unlike any other. Set at a Mexican hotel in the early 1940's, the drama presents several character portraits of searing intensity. The minister Shannon -- tortured with self-loathing over his inability to control his sexual appetite -- has abandoned a tour bus he has been leading and has come to stay with an old friend, Maxine. Shannon is suffering a nervous breakdown, and it is only through the near-angelic presence of Hannah Jelkes, a visitor at Maxine's, that he is able to understand himself and the actions which have brought him to this state. While so many of Williams' characters (including Shannon) feel shamefully about love and sex, in Hannah Jelkes he has created a character entirely without shame. Hannah is Williams' ideal -- a person living living free of societal mores, who (like Blanche DuBois) is offended only by deliberate cruelty and unkindness. The third act, in particular, is transfiguring; had Williams written nothing else, this act alone would guarantee him his place among the greats." The 1961 Broadway play starred Bette Davis, James Farentino, Patrick O'Neal, and Margaret Leighton as Hannah. THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA
by Ernest Hemingway. Cover art by Kris Wiltse. Condition: NEW 1995 Scribner Trade Paperback, 8th printing. Content: This is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal -- a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. There have been several movies made of this book, but the gold standard is the 1958 movie directed by John Sturges and starring Spencer Tracy and Felipe Pazos as The Boy. ONCE WERE WARRIORS (VHS Movie)
directed by Lee Tamahori. Movie stills both covers. 105 minutes run time. Condition: Used, but good, 1994 Communicado (New Zealand Film Commission) VHS movie. Most likely this is a former rental movie, although there are no overt signs. The tape itself is in excellent condition, but the box shows wear in the form of edgewear and rubbings along the hinges. Content: New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. The film pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride. As they travel together, Butch and Philip discover common bonds and suffer the abuses of the outside "Perfect World." In pursuit is Texas Ranger "Red" Garnett and criminologist Sally Gerber. Reviewer: This movie "touches you from the bottom of your heart. It is a story about a man and a boy. A man escapes from a prison with his partner who he does not like. After escaping, they kidnap a little boy. It is not a simple kidnapping story as people expect with violence and blood. This man, as he describes himself, is not a good guy, but not the worst either. The boy, living with his mom and two sisters, follows their familyˇŻs religion, which forbids him from celebrating Halloween, celebrating Christmas, participating in parties, and pretty much any fun common for children of his age. The man gives the boy opportunities to play the games that he wants to, tells him what is wrong and what is right, and asks him to be independent and make his own choices." PORTRAIT OF JENNIE
by Robert Nathan. Condition UNREAD, but not perfect, 1981 Laurel Leaf paperback, 6th printing. Although the interior is clean and tight (with light tanning to page edges), the cover has a very pale near-crease top front cover and tiny edgewear. Bookstore stamp inside front cover - why do they do that? Better than it sounds. Content: This story of strange young girl from out of the past who brings inspiration to an artist down on his luck exhibits the kind of full on romanticism one rarely encounters these days. This is a novel of pure mysticism, yet you needn't be a mystic to thoroughly enjoy it. One winter night in 1938, a down and out Eben is in Central Park, having been unsuccessful in selling his paintings. There, he encounters a very young girl named Jennie Appleton, who is mysteriously in the park by herself, playing hopscotch. Thus, begins Eben's acquaintance with Jennie. Eben sketches a picture of Jennie, which to his surprise, he is able to sell. Periodically, Jennie begins appearing in his life at odd times, always swathed in mystery as to her origins and always appearing somehow older than expected each time he sees her. Eben continues to sketch her, finding that he can sell those sketches with ease. Inspired by his muse, he paints her portrait, a masterpiece that eventually lands in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is puzzled, nonetheless, by the anomaly and mystery that surrounds Jennie, who has an air of being from another time. Yet, an unusual bond is developing between them, one that not even the vagaries of time can break. It is also one that becomes increasingly romantic over time, as Jennie quickly grows into womanhood. The fates, however, Eben finds, can be cruel. The 1948 movie was directed by William Dieterle and has an all-star cast: Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Cecil Kellaway, and the wonderful David Wayne. A PRIVATE MATTER (DVD) [1992 TV Movie]
directed by Joan Micklin Silver. Condition: NEW (still shrink-wrapped) HBO DVD. Content: Before there was Roe V. Wade, there was Sherri Finkbine. Finkbine was known as Miss Sherri on the local Phoenix, Arizona, version of the franchised children's show, Romper Room. The Finkbine Case began in London, England in 1961, when her husband was chaperoning sixty-four high school students on a European tour. He obtained some Thalidomide and carried the remainder home. Finkbine took thirty-six of the pills in the early stages of her pregnancy. Neither she nor her husband was aware, until July 1962, that the pills contained Thalidomide. In 1962, when Finkbine was pregnant with her fifth child, she had been taking Thalidomide, a drug which if taken by a pregnant woman, causes the fetus(es) within her to become deformed while in utero. Finkbine's physician strongly recommended that she obtain a therapeutic abortion, the only type of abortion that was permitted in Arizona at the time. Finkbine contacted a friend at a local newspaper to tell the friend her story, so that other women who were taking Thalidomide would be warned. Following the paper's publication of Finkbine's story, her scheduled abortion was canceled. When Finkbine's physician asked for a court order to proceed with the abortion, Finkbine and her husband became public figures, receiving letters and phone calls in opposition to her requested abortion. A few letters included death threats, and the FBI was brought in to protect her. She finally obtained the abortion in Sweden (the fetus had no legs and only 1 arm and would not have long survived). Later she had healthy fifth child. She lost her job with PBS and her husband was fired from his teaching job over the abortion. Lovely, eh? This movie is the story of Sherri and her husband Bob. Still relevant. The 1992 movie was directed by Joan Micklin Silver and starred Sissy Spacek, Aidan Quinn, Estelle Parsons, Xander Berkeley, and Sheila McCarthy. [1 copy available]

Interior clean & tight with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "Hansberry creates the story of the Youngers, a struggling African-American family whose members deal with poverty, racism, and painful conflict among themselves as they reach for a better life. The Youngers are, in my opinion, one of the most unforgettable families in United States literature. Hansberry balances grim drama, comic moments, and redemptive love as the play unfolds." The play was first produced in New York in 1959 and starred Ruby Dee, Glynn Turman, Poitier, Louis Gossett, Jr., Diana Sands, & Ivan Dixon. The 1961 movie was directed by Daniel Petrie, screenplay by Lorraine Hansberry, and starred Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ruby Dee, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Ivan Dixon. THE READER: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club edition)
by Bernhard Schlink. Condition NEW 1997 Vintage International Trade Paperback, no printing given. Tiny edge wear. Content: Michael Berg, 15, is on his way home from high school in post-World War II Germany when he becomes ill and is befriended by a woman who takes him home. When he recovers from hepatitis many weeks later, he dutifully takes the 40-year-old Hanna flowers in appreciation, and the two become lovers. The relationship, at first purely physical, deepens when Hanna takes an interest in the young man's education, insisting that he study hard and attend classes. Soon, meetings take on a more meaningful routine in which after lovemaking Michael reads aloud from the German classics. There are hints of Hanna's darker side: one inexplicable moment of violence over a minor misunderstanding, and the fact that the boy knows nothing of her life other than that she collects tickets on the streetcar. Content with their arrangement, Michael is only too willing to overlook Hanna's secrets. She leaves the city abruptly and mysteriously, and he does not see her again until, as a law student, he sits in on her case when she is being tried as a Nazi criminal. The theme of good versus evil and the question of moral responsibility are eloquently presented in this spare coming-of-age story that's sure to inspire questions and passionate discussion. THE REMAINS OF THE DAY (Winner - Booker Prize)
by Kazuo Ishiguro. Hopkins & Thompson movie still cover art. Condition NEW 1993 Vintage International Trade Paperback, fifth printing. Light tanning to page edges. Content: This book is both a compelling psychological study and a portrait of a vanished social order. Stevens, an elderly butler who has spent 30 years in the service of Lord Darlington, ruminates on the past and inadvertently slackens his rigid grip on his emotions to confront the central issues of his life. Glacially reserved, snobbish and humorless, Stevens has devoted his life to his concept of duty and responsibility, hoping to reach the pinnacle of his profession through totally selfless dedication and a ruthless suppression of sentiment. Having made a virtue of stoic dignity, he is proud of his impassive response to his father's death and his "correct" behavior with the spunky former housekeeper, Miss Kenton. Ishiguro builds Stevens's character with precisely controlled details, creating irony as the butler unwittingly reveals his pathetic self-deception. In the poignant denouement, Stevens belatedly realizes that he has wasted his life in blind service to a foolish man [& Nazi sympathizer] and that he has never discovered "the key to human warmth." The 1993 movie was directed by James Ivory and starred Christopher Reeve, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, the great James Fox, John Haycraft, and Hugh Grant. [1 copy available]

THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS
by Harold Bell Wright. B&W photos of dramatization. Condition UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 1987 Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), no printing given. Problem: Gift inscription on the loose end page. Otherwise perfect and very clean & tight. Light edge wear. Content: Reviewer: "My only knowledge of this book prior to reading it was that Branson, MO hosts an outdoor drama of this story. Since reading it and doing some research I learned that the author was the best selling author of the first quarter of the 20th century. Published in 1907 The Shepherd of the Hills is one of his most well known books. Set in the Ozarks where Wright lived for some years, the plot begins with an educated man visiting the area for unknown reasons. Quickly one learns that there is some mystery involved. Memorable characters come alive as the contrast between rural and urban cultures are explored. Using the visiting stranger as one who settles among the people, the author leads the reader to understand that developing integrity is the greater good rather than the typical successful urban stereotype. The book includes intertwined families, attempted hangings, romance, fights, revenue men, ghosts and secrets discovered. The physical landscape of the Ozarks is another character as it plays a part in the conflicts and resolutions. I was drawn into the story, getting a vivid image of the Ozarks at the time of the writing. I would recommend the book, especially to those interested in applied Christianity. While the author was not critically acclaimed by academia, he certainly was successful in communicating with the common people for whom buying books was still rare. The book needs to be considered by the time period of its writing, rather than current criticism. The author's life is as interesting as his book. More can be found about him on the Harold Bell Wright website." The 1941 movie was directed by Henry Hathaway and starred John Wayne, Harry Carey, Betty Field, Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond, Marjorie Main, and Fuzzy Knight. Worth renting or buying it! THE STERILE CUCKOO
by John Nichols. Movie stills illustrate front and back covers. Condition: Good only 1971 Avon paperback, 10th printing. Pale creases top and bottom front cover corners. Heavy tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "John Nichols' 1965 novel "The Sterile Cuckoo" is a universal tale about the pangs of first love during the important coming-of-age years of college. While the story is almost 40 years old, most readers should be able to relate to the awkward romance of protagonist Jerry Payne, an 18-year-old introvert, and the free-spirited and eccentric Pookie Adams, an extraordinarily complex, if not lovable character. Jerry fatefully meets Pookie one fternoon at an Oklahoma bus stop, and both eventually embark on a year-long romance during their underclassmen years at neighboring universities in the east. While much of the youthful slang is dated by today's standards, readers will recognize the multiple college roommates, impulsive road trips, sweaty make-out pits and trashed hotel rooms. The early years of college life have been almost perfectly recreated by Nichols, and several situations should immediately strike a chord in most readers who have lived on a college campus." The 1969 movie starred Liza Minnelli and Wendell Burton and lives up to it's billing as a "bittersweet love story." [1 copy available]

THIS BOY'S LIFE: A Memoir [Winner Pen Faulkner Award]
by Tobias Wolff. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 1992 Grove Press Trade Paperback, 5th printing. Light shelf war to 3-4 page corners - poor shelving. Content: Fiction writer Tobias Wolff electrified critics with his scarifying 1989 memoir, which many deemed as notable for its artful structure and finely wrought prose as for the events it describes. The story is pretty grim: Teenaged Wolff moves with his divorced mother from Florida to Utah to Washington State to escape her violent boyfriend. When she remarries, Wolff finds himself in a bitter battle of wills with his abusive stepfather, a contest in which the two prove to be more evenly matched than might have been supposed. Deception, disguise, and illusion are the weapons the young man learns to employ as he grows up--not bad training for a writer-to-be. Somber though this tale of family strife is, it is also darkly funny and so artistically satisfying that most readers come away exhilarated rather than depressed. WHERE THE HEART IS
by Billie Letts. Natalie iPortman, Ashley Judd movie cover. Condition: UNREAD 2000 Warner Books Trade Paperback, 28thh printing. Tiny edge wear with light tanning to page edges. Thin, short binder's glue string bottom spine. Content: Readers immersed in the offbeat world of Letts's lively, affecting first novel will forgive its occasional forced quirkiness. For 17-year-old Novalee Nation, seven months pregnant, the phrase "home is where your history begins" has a special meaning. Leaving behind a trail of foster homes in Tennessee trailer parks to live in a real house with her boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens, Novalee instead finds herself abandoned in front of a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Okla. With nowhere to turn, she cleverly conceals herself within the store, keeping careful accounts until giving birth to the "Wal-Mart baby" turns her into a local celebrity. Happily, the community reaches out to Novalee and baby Americus. Sequoyah's one-woman welcoming committee, Sister Husband, takes them in; cultured librarian Forney Hull takes a shine to them; photographer Moses Whitecotton encourages Novalee's raw talent for photography by teaching her all he knows; Lexie Coop, who has a huge appetite for food, diet fads and the wrong men, befriends her; and legendary Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton gives her a job. Meanwhile, Willy Jack, an aspiring musician, gets a shot at the big time before hitting bottom and realizing what he's left behind. Letts's wacky characters are depicted with humor and hope, as well as an earnestness that rises above the story's uneven conceits, resulting in a heartfelt and gratifying read. WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? [DVD]
written by Ernest Lehman, Edward Albee. Directed by Mike Nichols. Condition: NEW (shrink-wrapped) 1997 Warner DVD release of the 1996 movie. Content: A word of advice: If George (Richard Burton) and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) ever ask you over for late-night cocktails--pass. On the other hand, if you have the opportunity to see Mike Nichols's scorching film version of Edward Albee's sensational play, don't miss it! Elegantly photographed in crisp black and white by the great Haskell Wexler, the play has been "opened up" for the screen by director Nichols without diluting its concentrated, claustrophobic power. Taylor has never been better or brasher as Martha, letting loose with all the fury of a drunken, frustrated academic's wife on one crazy Walpurgisnacht bender. Burton plays her husband, George, the ineffectual history prof married to the college president's daughter. And George Segal and Sandy Dennis are young, callow Nick and Honey, who have no idea what sort of mind-warping psychological games they're being drawn into. Among the most successful theatrical adaptations (artistically and popularly) ever brought to the screen. The entire principal cast was nominated for Oscars--and Taylor, Dennis, and cinematographer Wexler won. Excellent! [1 copy available]

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP
by John Irving. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1979 Pocket paperback, fourth printing. Light edge wear with light rubbings along hinges. Content: "Garp was a natural storyteller," says the narrator of John Irving's incandescent novel, referring to the book's hero, the novelist Garp, who has much in common with Irving himself. "He could make things up one right after the other, and they seemed to fit." Irving packs wild characters and weird events into his classic--officially recognized as such in a Modern Library edition with a new introduction by the author--while amazingly maintaining the rough feel of realism in every scene and the pulse of life in every heart. Many novelists of his time might have populated a novel with a novelist protagonist whose life and books comment on each other and the novel we're reading. Transsexual football players, ball turret gunners lobotomized in battle, multiple adultery, unicycling bears, mad feminists who amputate their tongues in sympathy with the celebrated victim of a horrifying rape--Irving made them all people. Even the bear is a fitting character. How does he get away with his killer cocktail of slapstick and horror? Because it's simply what we all face daily, rearranged into soul-satisfying art. "Life is an X-rated soap opera," according to Garp, and who can contradict him? The 1982 movie was directed by George Roy Hill and starred Robin Williams, the divine John Lithgow, Glenn Close, Mary Beth Hurt, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, and Swoosie Kurtz. Part comedy; part tragedy; all enjoyable. [1 copy available]
