wrottem & illustrated by James Gurney. Beautiful color illustrations. Condition: NEW 1998 HarperCollins hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 7th printing. Content: Arthur Denison, a Victorian scientist, and his son Will are shipwrecked on an amazing island . Here, dinosaurs live in harmony with a colony of humans, made up of other marooned travelers and their descendants. Will and his father are fascinated by the technology of their new home. They visit a hatchery, a blacksmith in Volcaneum, and a city built on waterfalls. The boy is most impressed by the Skybax Riders, people who are trained to fly on winged reptiles. Deciding to join them, he goes through their rigorous training program. In the meantime, his father finds a route to the dinosaur underground, a mythic place referred to in old dinosaur tales. He returns to find his son has ``earned his wings,'' but his discoveries are saved for (one assumes) another book. Younger readers, too, will be enticed by the dramatic, full-color illustrations, which include both panoramic sweeps of the utopian cities and detailed sketches of Dinotopian contraptions. While the women are more active than their Victorian counterparts, the adventurers here are still Will and Dad. There was a TV mini-series made of Dinotopia in 2002 (?) directed by Marco Brambilla and starring David Thewlis, Tyron Leitso, Wentworth Miller, Katie Carr, and Jim Carter. [1copy available]

ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS
by Scott O'Dell. Winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. Condition: UNREAD 1978 Dell paperback edition, 57th printing (c. 1990+). Tiny edge wear. Content: O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for this book in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years. O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. The 1964 movie was directed by James B. Clark and starred Celia Kaye, Larry Domasin, Ann Daniel, George Kennedy, and Carlos Romero. Sinply wonderful. Ages 10 +. [1 copy available]

Van Buuren's graphic watercolors skillfully portray both the humorous Icabod with his pointed nose and long feet, and the gothic underworld of the haunted forest where even the horses become demonic. There are at least a dozen "Sleepy Hollow" movies, both animated and "real." but the version most popular right now is the 1999 movie directed by Tim Burton and starring the great Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, and Christopher Walken. MY DOG SKIP (Movie Edition)
by Willie Morris. Frankie Muniz and Skip movie still cover art. Condition: NEW 1996 Vintage Books softcover, no printing given. Light tanning to white cover edges. Content: This book is for anyone - male or female - who was ever owned by a dog and will never forget it. This is a true story. In 1943, nine-year-old Morris first met Skip, an English smooth-haired fox terrier puppy who immediately went to sleep in his arms. From that magical moment of connection ("I was an only child, and he now was an only dog") until Morris left home to go to college, boy and dog were inseparable companions. In this sweetly sentimental memoir, the author recalls growing up with Skip in the small, sleepy town of Yazoo, Mississippi. Unlike the other dogs Morris's family had owned, Skip was special. He could play football, running the "Statue of Liberty" play, much to the amazement of spectators ("Look at that dog playin' football!"). With a little assistance from Morris, Skip could drive a car ("Look at that ol' dog drivin' a car!"). He could run the 100-yard dash in 7.8 seconds, a world record for fox terriers. For anyone who has ever loved a dog, Morris's loving tribute will be a delightful read. [1 copy available]

THE OUTSIDERS
by S. E. Hinton. Movie art cover art. Movie still photos back cover. Condition: Good+, 1983 Dell Publishing paperback, 8th printing. Interior clean & tight but tanning. Shelfwear creases bottom front cover. Content: According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers--until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy's skin, causing his bifurcated world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser. This classic, written by S. E. Hinton when she was 16 years old, is as profound today as it was when it was first published in 1967. This moving story is excellent for all ages and perfect to illustrate both sides of bullying. The movie starred pracatically everyone in Hollywood who was an "up-and-comer": C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Leif Garrett, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It's wonderful - don't miss it. THE POLAR EXPRESS [Caldecott Medal winner]
text and color illustations by Chris Van Allsburg. Condition: NEW 1985 Houghton Mifflin hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 38th printing. Beautiful illustrations. Content: One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder. The 2004 movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Tom Hanks, Leslie Harter Zemeckis, Eddie Deezen, Nona Gaye, and Peter Scolari. RAYMOND BRIGGS' THE SNOWMAN (VHS movie)
by Raymond Briggs. Condition: NEW (still shrink-wrapped) 1982 edition VHS by Columbia Tristar Home Video. 29 minutes. Content: This charming British animated short film is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn i llustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. An Academy Award nominee. Directred by Diane Jackson with the voices of Peter Autry and/or Aled Jones with David Bowie as the narrator. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

by Pete Hamill. Condition: Gently pre-read 1992 Little, Brown hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. No major flaws or problems - does have tiny crinkle top DJ at hinge. Content: This is a wonderful novel with the movie being very faithful to the written text. In exchange for lessons in English and baseball, Rabbi Hirsch teaches him Yiddish and tells him of Jewish life in old Prague and of the mysteries of the Kabbalah. Anti-Semitism soon rears its head in the form of a gang of young Irish toughs out to rule the neighborhood. As the gang escalates its violence, it seems that only being as miraculously powerful as Captain Marvel - or a golem - could stop them. Strongly evoking time and place, Hamill editor of New York's Daily News, serves up a coming-of-age tale with a hearty dose of magical realism mixed in. Not to be missed. [1 copy available]

SOUNDER (Winner of the Newbery Medal)
by William H. Armstrong. Winfield and Hooks movie still cover. B&W movie stills section. Condition: UNREAD 1973 Scholastic paperback, first printing. Light tanning to white cover edges and interior page edges. Content: Sounder is no beauty. But as a coon dog, this loyal mongrel with his cavernous bark is unmatched. When the African American sharecropper who has raised Sounder from a pup is hauled off to jail for stealing a hog, his family must suffer their humiliation and crushing loss with no recourse. To make matters worse, in the fracas, Sounder is shot and disappears. The eventual return of a tattered and emaciated Sounder doesn't change the fact that the sharecropper's oldest son is forced to take on man's work to help support the family. His transition to adulthood is paved by the rocks and taunts hurled at him by convicts and guards as he searches for his father. But along this rough road he ultimately finds salvation as well. Armstrong's Newbery Award-winning novel quickly became a classic as a moving portrayal of resilience and hope in the face of profound human tragedy. Decades later, the bittersweet story still rings true, as strong-spirited individuals continue to battle the evil of prejudice. THE WHALE RIDER (Movie Edition)
by Witi Ihimaera. Movie stills both covers. Condition: NEW 2003 Harcourt Trade Paperback, first thus, second printing. Tiny, tiny edgewear. Content: "A poetic blend of reality and myth provides a riveting tale of adventure and passion. An ancient whale ridden by a mystical man rises from the sea, the rider throwing spears that blossom like seeds into gifts of nature. One last spear "-flew across a thousand years. When it hit the earth, it did not change but waited for another hundred and fifty years to pass until it was needed." It sprouts when Kahu, a girl child, is born to the eldest grandson of the chief of the Maori in Whangara, New Zealand. Koro Apirana is disgusted; he needs a male child to continue the line of descent in the tribe. The years that follow further harden his heart toward his great-granddaughter in spite of the bottomless love and respect she showers upon him. The child's great-grandmother, the irreverent Nanny Flowers, proves to be the strength of this family; she nurtures the girl whom she knows holds the key to the future. The complex mixture of archetypal characters and cultural troubles make this novel appropriate for mature readers. Overt and sometimes violent racism is encountered and the tragic and bloody death of hundreds of beached whales may disturb younger readers. This story, originally published in New Zealand in 1987, is the basis of the recently released film by the same name. It's a tale rich in intense drama and sociological and cultural information. A Maori glossary is appended" Grades 5-8. [1 copy available]
