12 MONKEYS (Movie Novelization)
by Elizabeth Hand. B&W movie stills section. Condition: NEW 1995 HarperPrism paperback, first edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: An unknown and lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Only 1% of the population has survived by the year 2035, and is forced to live underground. A convict (James Cole) reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the origin of the epidemic (who he's told was spread by a mysterious "Army of the Twelve Monkeys") and locate the virus before it mutates so that scientists can study it. Unfortunately Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990, six years earlier than expected, and is arrested and locked up in a mental institution, where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist, and Jeffrey Goines, the insane son of a famous scientist and virus expert. Movie adaptations usually seem lackluster and play-by-play to me, but Elizabeth Hand was the perfect choice for this book. Her writing style is sardonically strange, and she seems to capture the spirit of Gilliam's dark vision of the future. The 1996 movie starred Bruce Willis, Jon Seda, Brad Pitt, Vernon Campbell, and Joey Perillo. Directed by Terry Gilliam. [1 copy available]

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Movie Novelization)
by Arthur C. Clarke. Based on screenplay by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Kier Duella cover. B&W movie stills section. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1968 Signet paperback, 15th printing. Edgewear with light hinge crease. Interior clean & tight with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Clarke wrote the book based on the screenplay by Clarke and Stanley Kubrick as the film was being made. When an enigmatic monolith is found buried on the moon, scientists are amazed to discover that it's at least 3 million years old. Even more amazing, after it's unearthed the artifact releases a powerful signal aimed at Saturn. What sort of alarm has been triggered? To find out, a manned spacecraft, the Discovery, is sent to investigate. Its crew is highly trained--the best--and they are assisted by a self-aware computer, the ultra-capable HAL 9000. But HAL's programming has been patterned after the human mind a little too well. He is capable of guilt, neurosis, even murder, and he controls every single one of Discovery's components. The crew must overthrow this digital psychotic if they hope to make their rendezvous with the entities that are responsible not just for the monolith, but maybe even for human civilization. Great SciFi and great movie. The 1968 movie classic starred Duella, Gary Lockwood, Daniel Richter, and Leonard Rossiter. [1 copy available]

ARMAGEDDON (Movie Novelization) & The CD
by M. C. Bolin. Based on screenplay by Jonathan Hensleigh. B&W movie stills section. Condition: NEW 1998 Hyperion paperback, first edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: An asteroid the size of Texas is heading directly toward Earth at 22,000 mph. NASA;s director has only one option - to send a crew up to destroy the asteroid. He enlists the help of Harry Stamper, the world's foremost deep core oil driller - and his roughneck team of drillers to land on the asteroid, drill into its surface, and drop a nuclear device into it's core. Co-stars: Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, Liv Tyler, and the always strange Steve Buscemi. This is not a politically correct movie! However the CD is definitely "correct": I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith; Remember Me - Journey; What Kind Of Love Are You On - Aerosmith; La Grange - ZZ Top; Roll Me Away - Bob Seger; When The Rainbow Comes - Shawn Colvin; Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith; Mister Big Time - Jon Bon Jovi; Come Together - Aerosmith; Wish I Were You - Patty Smyth; Starseed - Our Lady Peace; Leaving On A Jet Plane - Chantal Kreviazuk; Theme From Armageddon - Trevor Rabin; Animal Crackers - Steven Tyler. so you can now read and listen to Armageddon at the same time. by David Gerrold. Based on screenplay by John William Corrington and Joyce Hooper Corrington. Dedicated to Harlan Ellison. Condition: NEW 1998 Hyperion paperback, first edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: The city of the apes was a quiet, peaceful city and was ruled by apes and served by men. The 1973 movie starred Roddy McDowall, Claude Akins, Natalie Trundy, Lew Ayres and John Huston. BLADE RUNNER (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) (Movie Edition)
by Philip K. Dick. Movie art cover. Movie stills back cover. Condition: UNREAD 1982 Ballantine books paperback edition, 34th printing. Pale shelfwear hinge crease with tiny edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Content: It was January 2021, and Rick Deckard had a license to kill. Somewhere among the hordes of humans out there, lurked several rogue androids. Deckard's assignment - find them and then . . "retire" them. Trouble was, the androids all looked and acted exactly like humans, and they didn't want to be found. The 1982 movie starred Harrison Ford, the fabulous Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. Directed by Ridley Scott. [Note: Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner took a lot from the original novel, and threw a lot away. Wonderful in itself, the film is a flash thriller, whereas Dick's novel is a sober meditation. THE CREATION OF DINO DE LAURENTIIS' KING KONG
by Bruce Bahrenburg. 50+ B&W movie stills. Condition: UNREAD 1976 Pocket paperback, first printing. Small edgewear with moderate tanning to interior page edges. Tons of B&W movie stills illustrate. Content: In light of the new rendition of Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005), this book may fall a little short technically, but it's still worth the read. "Is this the best King Kong movie - heavens no! Probably the worst. The magic of the book is in the behind-the-scenes stories about making a big budget flop with special effects. Reviewer: "How to make a 40 foot flop! This is the making of the 1976 remake of the 1933 classic King Kong. A monumental, money-eating flop, maybe, but an interesting "making of" all the same. From malfunctioning mechanics to illiterate Italians bound on squandering as much of the green as possible to make their vision a reality, this book has it all. Why remake a classic (though in modern terms a little cheesy looking) that has spanned decades and stood the test of time, at least in the eyes of movie buffs? Who knows, but this book is an excellent insight into the behind-the-scenes of the film making process, and should satisfy anyone after a glimpse into the realms of epic Hollywood." DRAGONHEART (Movie Novelization)
by Charles Edward Pogue - based on his screenplay. Story by Patrick Read JOhnson & Charles Edwarad Pogue. Condition: NEW 1996 Boulevard paperback, first printing. Dragon and Quaid movie stills front cover. Content: There's not much to be said about this movie - one of the most beloved of all fantasy movies. Bowen, an old-world knight who would train a future king; Kara, a peasant girl who mortally wounded the young prince; and Draco, a noble dragon who healed him, come together in an unlikely alliance against a tyrannical ruler. The book delves into character more than the movie and is darker - most likely Pogue's original concept. The 1996 movie was directed by Rob Cohen and starred Dennis Quaid, David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, Dina Meyer, Jason Isaacs, Julie Christie, John Gielgud, and Sean Connery as the voice of Draco. FANTASY AND THE CINEMA
edited by James Donald. B&W movie stills illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1989 BFI Trade Paperback, first printing. Pale, short shelf wear hinge crease with light edge wear. Interior clean & tight. Content: This book revitalises the study of film by suggesting a provocative new perspective that draws on aspects of contemporary cultural theory. The articles turn a sophisticated, scholarly but often irreverent eye on material that ranges from modernist classics like "Vampyr" and "India Song" to Hollywood sci-fi, from the alchemical animation of Jan Svankmajer and the witty feminist videos of Cecelia Condit to the gut-churning horrors of "Motel Hell." GREEN MANSIONS
by W. H. Hudson. Condition: UNREAD1989 Dover Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: Modern classic tells the compelling story of Rima, a strange birdlike girl of the jungle, and Abel, the European who falls in love with her. The book owes much of its popularity to the mystic, near-religious feeling that pervades the story and the beauty of Rima's halting, poetic expressions. The 1959 movie was directed by Mel Ferrer and starred Audrey Hepburn (Ferrer's wife at the time), Tony Perkins, Anthony Perkins, Lee J. Cobb, Sessue Hayakawa, and Nehemiah Persoff. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (The Novel)
by Jack Finney. Condition: NEW 1998 Scribner Trade Paperback, 4th printing. Content: On a quiet fall evening in the small, peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovered an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms were taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, his friends, his family, the woman he loved-- the world as he knew it. First published in 1955, this classic thriller of the ultimate alien invasion and the triumph of the human spirit over an invisible enemy inspired three major motion pictures. The first movie was made in 1956, directed by Don Sigel, and starred Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan, and Carolyn Jones. [Still the best one, IMHO.] The second movie was made in 1978 and was directed by Philip Kaufman and starred Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy and cameos by Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy. The last movie was made in 2007 (The Invasion) and was directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and starred the wonderful Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Northam, Daniel Craig, Jackson Bond, Roger Rees, and Veronica Cartwright. JUST LIKE HEAVEN (AKA If Only It Were True)
by Marc Levy. Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo cover. Condition: NEW 2005 Atria Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: What do you do when you find a stranger in your closet, particularly when she's surprised that you can even see her -- and she can disappear and reappear at whim? What if she then tells you that her body is actually in a coma on the other side of town? Should you have her see a psychiatrist or should you consult one yourself? Or do you take a chance and believe in her, and allow yourself to be swept up in an extraordinary adventure? This is the beginning of the dilemma Arthur, a young San Francisco architect, is facing when he discovers Lauren in his apartment. Arthur is the only man who can share Lauren's secret, the only one who can see her, hear her, and talk to her when no one else so much as senses her presence. LOST HORIZON
by James Hilton. Condition: NEW 1988 Pocket paperback (first edition 1939), reprint. Content: Four kidnapped survivors of a plane crash are rescued and taken to the Valley of the Blue Moon in Tibetan mountains where they discover peace, fantasy, and a great secret. Lost Horizon is less about its characters and their siutation--interesting though those elements may be--than it is about their thoughts and ideas. Written as it was on eve of World War II, these thoughts and ideas center upon developing a way of life that preserves, rather than destroys, that which is finest in both humanity and the world in general. The 1937 movie was directed (of course) by Frank Capra and starred Jane Wyatt, Ronald Coleman, Edward Everett Horton, John Howard, Sam Jaffe, Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Stone, & H. B. Warner. A perfect movie. [Note: if you buy a copy of the movie, my suggestion is not to get the "restored" version where the movie is stopped periodically and movie stills are shown while "lost" dialogue is spoken. THE LOST WORLD (A&E/BBC Miniseries/TV Movie)
by Arthur Conan Doyle. BBC cover artwork. Edited with notes by Philip Gooden. Condition: NEW 2002 Penguin Trade Paperback, first printing. Movie Edition. Remainder. Content: Since this is a story we all know, I'll concentrate on the TV movie. Professor Challenger reveals the existence of a remote plateau in the Amazon jungle where dinosaurs have survived. He returns there leading an expedition. Not only are dinosaurs found and confronted, but also highly evolved apes, Amazonian Indians who think Challenger a god, and, on the way, the attractive orphaned niece of a lonely missionary. Theology intervenes in this exercise in vindicating Darwin and the missionary twice attempts to sabotage the mission. After much excitement, love is found in unexpected places, and, confronted by civilization, as represented by the Royal Society in London, Challenger changes his story. THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (Or Jurassic Park, Part 2)
by Michael Crichton. Condition: NEW 1996 Ballantine paperback, 9th printing. Hologram cover art. Content: Since this book is mostly about another movie, I'll just give you the movie blurb. Four years after the failure of Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar, John Hammond reveals to Ian Malcolm that there was another island ("Site B") on which dinosaurs were bred before being transported to Isla Nublar. Left alone since the disaster, the dinosaurs have flourished, and Hammond is anxious that the world see them in their "natural" environment before they are exploited. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Attenborough, Vince Vaughn (Vince Vaughn???), and the great character actor, Peter Stormare as Dieter Stark. THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH
by Walter Tevis. David Bowie cover. Condition: UNREAD 1976 Pan Books (London) paperback, first British printing. Tiny edgewear with light to moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "This book works on many levels: it's a perfect metaphor on the lonliness of Tevis' life and his battle with booze; the novel also works as an internalized view of any one that has ever felt alienated and apart from society; Man also works as a straight ahead science fiction narrative. Although there are holes in the novel (wouldn't any society advanced enough to send someone across the stars and come up with marvelous inventions be able to create the resources necessary to sustain it's society?). The plot acts as little more than a narrative device in this character study. Like much of Tevis' other works, the story really is about an outsider's attempts to fit in with an uncaring society. The novel compliments Nicholas Roeg's classic film and vice versa. It isn't necessarily important to read the novel prior to the film but it will add an extra dimension to the experience." The 1976 movie starred David Bowie, Rip Torn, Candy Clark, and Buck Henry. Directed by Nicolas Roeg. Music by David Bowie. Both the book and the move are worth the time. [1 copy available]

MEGIDDO: The Omega Code 2 (Movie novelization)
by Paul Crouch with Cynthia Cirile. Screenplay by John Fasano & Steven Blinn. Cover art by P.O.V. Design. Condition: NEW 2001 Charisma House Trade Paperback, first printing. Small edgewear. Content: I have to admit I am not familar with this work, but the books says it is a movie novelization and the blurb for the movie says it is based on the book. Hmmm. Megiddo is a supernatural ride into a world teetering on the edge of the Apocalypse. It follows the rise of a Machiavellian leader bent on amassing the armies of the world for the battle of Armageddon while calamities of Biblical proportions pummel the Earth. Though both prequel and sequel to The Omega Code, Megiddo works also as a stand alone story for anyone who missed its predecessor. For at its emotional core, Megiddo is the Caine and Abel story of the two men enamoured with the same woman, raised as brothers, who grew up to find themselves pitted against each other over the fate and souls of the entire world. The 2001 movie was directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and starred Michael York, the great, under appreciated Michael Biehn, Joseph Makkar, Guy Siner, Diane Venora, Franco Nero, and Michael Paul Chan (The Closer). I have no idea if this is a good book or movie. [1 copy available]

PLANET OF THE APES (Cinema Classics series)
by Pierre Boulle. Translation from the French by Xan Fielding. Condition: Gently pre-read 2000 Gramercy Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Content: If you've seen the progressively cheesier Planet of the Apes movies of 1968-1973, you may be shocked to learn the first movie was adapted from an intelligent, ironic, and literate novel. You'll be less surprised when you learn the original novel Planet of the Apes was written by Pierre Boulle, author of The Bridge over the River Kwai In the novel, the three Frenchmen making the first interstellar journey discover a remarkably Earth-like world orbiting Betelgeuse -- Earth-like, with one crucial difference: The humans are dumb beasts, and the apes are intelligent. Captured during a terrifying manhunt, locked in a cage, and ignorant of the simian language, Ulysse Merou struggles to convince the apes that he possesses intelligence and reason. But if he proves he is not an animal, he may seal his own doom. Like the first movie, the novel has a twist ending, but a twist of a different--yet equally shocking--sort. The 1968 movie featured, of course, American astronauts, and was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. It starred Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly, & Linda Harrison. [1 copy available]

PRACTICAL MAGIC
by Alice HOffman. Condition: UNREAD 1995 G. P. Putnam's Trade Paperback, second printing. Small edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Content: The real and the magical worlds are almost seamlessly mixed here, the humor is sharper than in previous books, the characters' eccentricities grow credibly out of their past experiences and the poignant lessons they learn reverberate against the reader's heartstrings, stroked by Hoffman's lyrical prose. The Owens women have been witches for several generations. Orphaned Sally and Gillian Owens, raised by their spinster aunts in a spooky old house, grow up observing desperate women buying love potions in the kitchen and vow never to commit their hearts to passion. Fate, of course, intervenes. Steady, conscientious Sally marries, has two daughters and is widowed early. Impulsive, seductive Gillian goes through three divorces before she arrives at Sally's house with a dead body in her car. Meanwhile, Sally's daughters, replicas of their mother and their aunt, experience their own sexual awakenings. The inevitability of love and the torment and bliss of men and women gripped by desire is Hoffman's theme here, and she plays those variations with a new emphasis on sex scenes - there's plenty of steamy detail and a pervasive use of the f-word. The dialogue is always on target, particularly the squabbling between siblings, and, as usual, weather plays a portentous role. Readers will relish this magical tale. The delightful 1998 movie was directed by Griffin Dunne and starred Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Goran Visnjic, Evan Rachel Wood, and the fabulous Aidan Quinn. You'll love it. [1 copy available]

SNOW IN AUGUST
by Pete Hamill. Condition: Gently pre-read 1992 Little, Brown hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. No major flaws or problems - does have tiny crinkle top DJ at hinge. Content: This is a wonderful novel with the movie being very faithful to the written text. In Brooklyn in 1947, Michael Devlin, an 11-year-old Irish kid who spends his days reading Captain Marvel and anticipating the arrival of Jackie Robinson, makes the acquaintance of a recently emigrated Orthodox rabbi. In exchange for lessons in English and baseball, Rabbi Hirsch teaches him Yiddish and tells him of Jewish life in old Prague and of the mysteries of the Kabbalah. Anti-Semitism soon rears its head in the form of a gang of young Irish toughs out to rule the neighborhood. As the gang escalates its violence, it seems that only being as miraculously powerful as Captain Marvel - or a golem - could stop them. Strongly evoking time and place, Hamill editor of New York's Daily News, serves up a coming-of-age tale with a hearty dose of magical realism mixed in. Not to be missed. [1 copy available]

SUPERMAN: Last Son of Krypton
by Elliot S. Maggin. 16 pages of B&W movie stills. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1978 Warner Books paperback, first printing. Tiny edgewear with pale tanning to interior pages. Small "scuff" mark front cover. Interior clean & tight. Content: Reviewer: "If anyone needs to know how to write a comic-book novel, remain faithful to the spirit and mythology of the series and yet take make it solid enough for a text-based medium, this is it. I read this novel as a teenager and was enthralled by its depictions of Superman and his supporting cast. Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Steve Lombard and especially Lex Luthor are painted with good humour and with a three-dimensionality they never truly achieved in the comics. Maggin takes the threads of Superman's history and the DC Universe, binding them together in a coherent narrative that gives us new insights into the psyche of the Man of Steel and his greatest foe. The 1978 movie was directed by Richard Donner and starred, of course, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Margot Kidder, Maria Schell, Terrance Stamp, Glenn Ford (my favorite), Susannah York, and Rex Reed (as himself). SUPERTOYS LAST ALL SUMMER LONG And Other Stories of Future Time (Basis for the movie A.I.)
by Brian Aldiss. New foreword by the author. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2001 St. Martin's Griffin Trade Paperback, first printing. pale shelfwear diagonal crease front and back cover - you kow when people just jam a book back on the shelf causing damage. Interior clean & tight. Content: Blame it on taxes. According to SFWA Grand Master Brian Aldiss, that's the main reason he sold the movie rights to the Pinocchio-android tale to Stanley Kubrick back in 1982. Bound here along with two followup short stories and nine unrelated short pieces from more recent years, "Supertoys" was to be the source material for Kubrick's last movie. Of course, Kubrick died, and then Steven Spielberg inherited the rights, intending to follow through on Kubrick's original vision. These three excellent stories occupy just the first 35 pages of this compilation, but they accurately capture one of the great voices of British SF at his prime, with a plaintive, thoughtfully nuanced story about existence and the meaning of being human. The remaining tales range from intriguing to distractingly strident to borderline mawkish, but make no mistake about what's the main attraction here. In fact, the foreword alone, with Kubrick exposed at his curmudgeonly worst ("[To Aldiss:] You seem to have two modes of writing--brilliant and not so damned good"), makes this a collection worth picking up. The 2001 Spielberg movie (A. I. Artificial Intelligence) had as its "hero" a highly advanced robotic boy who longs to become "real" so that he can regain the love of his human mother. The movie starred Haley Joel Osment, Frances O'Connor, Sam Robards, Jake Thomas, Jude Law, & William Hurt. [1 copy available]

SWORD AND THE SORCERER (Movie Novelization)
by Norman Winski. Based on the screenplay by Tom Karnowski, John Stuckmeyer, and Albert Pyun. Movie art front cover. Movie stills back cover. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1982 Pinnacle Books paperback, first printing. Shelfwear hinge crease with small edgewear. Interior pages show moderate tanning to edges. Content: In a medieval world of wicked kings and soldiers who rape and pillage, it is the sorcerer who is the most powerful of all. Cromwell of Aragon sailed to the far edge of the world to raise the powerful and evil sorcerer, Xusia, from his thousand year sleep, only to use him and then betray him. But Xusia has made a vow to get even - in his own time, in his own manner, and in a new disguise. The 1982 movie, directed by Albert Pyun, starred an unlikely cast for a medieval fantasy movie, IMHO: Lee Horsley (a Texas boy), Kathleen Beller, Simon MacCorkindale, George Maharis, and Richard Lynch. It seems to be enjoying a revival this year. [1 copy available]

TIMELINE
by Michael Crichton. Condition: Very good, gently pre-read 2000 Ballantine paperback, first domestic edition, first printing. Tiny edgewear & pale spine crease. Interior clean & tight. Content: This book is about historians in 1999 employed by a tech billionaire-genius with more than a few of Bill Gates's most unlovable quirks. Like the entrepreneur in Crichton's Jurassic Park, Doniger plans a theme park featuring artifacts from a lost world revived via cutting-edge science. When the project's chief historian sends a distress call to 1999 from 1357, the boss man doesn't tell the younger historians the risks they'll face trying to save him. At first, the interplay between eras is clever, but Timeline swiftly becomes a swashbuckling old-fashioned adventure, with just a dash of science and time paradox in the mix. Most of the cool facts are about the Middle Ages, and Crichton marvelously brings the past to life without ever letting the pulse-pounding action slow down. The 2003 movie of the same name starred Paul Walker, Gerard Butler, Frances O'Connor, and David Thewlis (pre-Professor Lupin). Directed by Richard Donner. [1 copy available]
