STAR WARS: Science Fiction Movie Books

A GALAXY NOT SO FAR AWAY: Writers and Artists on Twenty-Five Years of Star Wars
edited by Glenn Kenny. Condition: NEW 2002 Henry Holt Trade Paperback, first printing. Slight lift to front cover fore edge. Content: This is a collection of essays that set out to seriously explore the vast landscape of the Star Wars cultural phenomenon. Premiere magazine editor Glenn Kenny has complied 18 well-crafted pieces from a wide array of pop culture aficionados, including ribald filmmaker Kevin Smith and Onion satirist Todd Hanson. The pieces range from serious scholarship to self-deprecating geek confessionals. Some--such as "Pale Starship, Pale Rider: The Ambiguous Appeal of Boba Fett" by Tom Bissell--tend toward the esoteric minutiae of fandom, and are sure to please the rabid devotee. But most are kindly universal and range far beyond the spacey subject matter into more human territory. Thankfully, most of the writers don't take themselves too seriously as they make the jump to hyperspace. Thus, the collection is a pleasure to read and an interesting foray into the passionate media culture surrounding the Star Wars universe. Essays: Harry Allen - On Star WArs and Hip-Hop; Dan Barden on Rites of Passage and the Empire Strikes Back; Arion Berger on Star Wars as a Cultural Virus; Kate Bernheimer on "A Star Wars Tale"; Tom Bissell on The Enduring Enigma of Boba Fett, Vile Mercenary; Tom Carson on The Politics of Star Wars; Todd Hanson on The Phantom Menace; Erika Krouse on Jedi Knights and the Martial Arts; Jonathan Lethem on Seeing Star Wars Twenty-One Times in One Summer; Lydia Millet on the Darth Vaders in Her Life - and Ours; Elvis Mitchell on Lando Calrissian; Neal Pollack on Star Wars as Catcher in the Rye; Joe Queenan on the Galactic Empire - The Galaxy's Last HOpe; Elwood Reid on Rural Ohio, May 1977; Kevin Smith on Growing Up Star Wars; Webster Younce on the Purged Star Wars Holiday Special. A Galaxy Not So Far Away

STAR WARS: EPISODE I, THE PHANTOM MENANCE (Movie novelization)
by Terry Brooks. Based on the screenplay and story by George Lucas. Movie stills front & back covers. Condition: NEW 1999 Lucas Books/Ballantine Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Brooks handles the job of modern mythmaker well. He deftly juggles a hodgepodge of characters: a young stately queen (Amidala) and her handmaidens; a pair of Jedi knights (Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn); a bumbling amphibious sidekick (Jar Jar Binks); two Sith Lords (Darths Maul and Sidious) who add more than enough menace to the mix; a couple of familiar robots (C-3P0 and R2-D2); a teeming host of Senators, Chancellors, diplomats, warrior droids, and spies; and one young slave boy who aspires to be a Jedi knight (Anakin Skywalker). With cinematic prose, Brooks brings to life a number of epic battles, skirmishes, and dogfights in space--all the elements that we've come to expect from a rousing Star Wars installment. The Phantom Menace doesn't stray far from those expectations: there is a clear division between the good guys and the bad; good things come in small (and surprising) packages; and heroes lose battles only to emerge victorious on another day. But Phantom does illuminate in ways the other installments didn't. For the first time, we get a glimpse at the whys and wherefores behind the curtain; at times the book reads almost like a sociopolitical thriller as the emerging Federation shuffles for power with the waning democracy of the Republic. The Force is also further illuminated. Turns out it has something to do with "midi-chlorians"--microscopic life forms that live in the cells of all creatures. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

STAR WARS: EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES (Movie novelization)
by R. A. Salvatore. Based on the screenplay and story by George Lucas & Jonathan Hales. Movie stills front cover. Condition: NEW 2002 Lucas Books/Ballantine Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Salvatore has done a good job of fleshing out the story of the Star Wars II movie. The book introduces Anakin's mother; her husband; and her stepson, Owen, who will raise the future Luke Skywalker, and describes her capture and the failed attempt to rescue her. If that doesn't appeal, there is always the chapter describing Amidala's family on Naboo, whom viewers never even meet in the film. Perhaps more enticing, the book treats readers to the actual scene of Anakin's vengeful destruction of the Tusken Raider encampment, an action so pivotal to his future course in the Dark Side. Additionally, the audience can easily get confused as to the sequence of events during the movie-the book can clear that up.Of course, we all know who's in the movie and who directed it - so I won't bore you.
