BLACKBIRD SINGING: Poems and Lyrics, 1965 - 1999
by Sir Paul McCartney. Condition: NEW 2001 W. W. Norton hardcover & DJ (n mylar jacket), first American edition, first printing. This first collection brings together early and late poems, along with some of Sir Paul's greatest hits (including the words to "Yesterday," "Lady Madonna," "Penny Lane," and "Hey Jude.") CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL: Songs of the West Indies
by Irving Burgie. Beautiful vibrant color illustrations by Frane Lessac. Afterword by Rosa Gary. Condition: NEW 1992 Tambourine hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Thirteen popular calypso songs are featured in this colorful collection. Traditional chants and ballads from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and elsewhere as well as Burgie's original compositions, which were popularized by singer Harry Belafonte, appear. Such selections as ``Day-O,'' ``Michael Row the Boat,'' ``Yellow Bird,'' and ``Que bonita bandera'' are included. The lyrics of the latter have been translated into English at the bottom of the page. Accompanying the arrangements are full- or double-page paintings and a title bar in Lessac's characteristic, primitive style. Her bright colors and lively scenes will attract young readers to the work, and she does a good job of showing the multiethnic heritage--African, Indian, European-- of the residents of the region. An informative afterword by Rosa Guy, which is written for adults but may be read and understood by older children, traces the origins of the songs in African tradition and in the experience of African-descended peoples in the West Indies. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED (MTV's Behind The Music Series)
by Martin Huxley and Quinton Skinner. B&W era photos illustrate. Buddy Holly cover. Condition: NEW 2001 Pocket Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: Their lives were cut brutally short...yet the legacy has on lived on for four decades. They were three of rock 'n' roll's brightest stars, touring together in a music revue that was as grueling as it was magical. Dilapidated school buses that frequently broke down and rarely had heat carried them hundreds of miles across the Midwest with its unforgiving cold. Hoping to get a decent night's sleep, a hot meal, and a chance to clean the clothes they'd been wearing for weeks, Buddy Holly chartered a plane. On February 3, 1959, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly boarded a small plane bound for rock 'n' roll heaven. This is their story, told by the family members, bandmates, and witnesses who lived it. Including material not seen in the original VH1 broadcast, Behind the Music: the Day the Music Died is a compelling record of one of rock 'n' roll's defining moments. Especially fascinating to me: the late great Waylon Jennings's interviews - Jennings was bumped from the flight. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Here he concentrates on the careers of Garth Brooks, Wynonna Judd, and Wade Hayes to show what it takes to get to the top in Nashville's country music world. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

GOD BLESS THE CHILD
words & music by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr. Warm, appropriate color illustrations by Jerry Pinkney. Condition: NEW 2000 HarperCollins large soft cover, first printing. Content: A moving visual interpretation of Holiday and Herzog's swing spiritual based on the proverb, "God blessed the child that's got his own." The song serves as the inspiration for Pinkney's depiction of the Great Migration of the 1930s. Through evocative images, the artist tells the story of one family's move north. The warm and sweeping illustrations are masterful, completely filling each spread. Although the pages are rich in detail, the well-composed paintings never seem cluttered or overwhelming. There is something new to attract readers, even after several readings. The sense of the family members as a unit, as well as their emotions of hope, anxiety, and relief, are all beautifully conveyed. While a fine choice for independent reading, this title is particularly poignant when shared with a group. An author's note provides background about Pinkney's inspirations and research. This offering makes an excellent tie-in to units on African-American history. [2 copies available]

GOIN' BACK TO MEMPHIS: A Century of Blues, Rock 'N' Roll and Glorious Soul
by James Dickerson. B&W era photo section plus B&W photos througout. Condition: NEW 1997 Shirmer Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Musical Memphis defined the blues, rechanneled it into rhythm and blues, invented rock and roll, then bastardized it into pop. This infectious blend of history, anecdote, reportage and gossip begins with wild, woolly, turn-of-the-century Beale Street, which attracted blues bandleader W.C. Handy. The 1920s Memphis music scene was dominated by bluesman Walter "Furry" Lewis, fiery ex-prostitute Memphis Minnie (Lizzie Douglas) and "Fiddling Abe" Fortas (who later became a Supreme Court Justice). The 1930s and '40s brought forth swing arranger Jimmie Lunceford and harmonica wizard Sonny Boy Williamson, but the narrative really gets going in 1950 when Elvis Presley, a 15-year-old from Mississippi, began hanging out on Beale Street, eventually recording hits with Sam Phillips's Sun Record. Otis Redding helped define soul in Memphis in the '60s. Dickerson, a freelance music journalist who has long covered the Memphis scene, seemingly drags in every artist who has recorded in Memphis, from Petula Clark to Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and ZZ Top. His engaging chronicle sizzles with the energies that transformed American music and popular culture. Questions welcome. [2 copies available]

ROLLIN' AND TUMBLIN': The Postwar Blues Guitarists
edited by Jas Obrecht. B&W photos throughout. Condition: NEW 2000 Miller Freeman Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Reviewer: "By "postwar blues", we mean the upbeat, amplified, often aggressive material that many popologists see simply as the roots of rock'n'roll. But for blues fans, the muscular power and driving passion of the bluesmen is enough by itself, and this collection of articles and interviews profiling many of the genre's greatest players, is manna from heaven for the folks who could care less what happened after Elvis shook his little heinie on the Ed Sullivan show. This is a classicist's view of the blues -- standardbearers such as Otis Rush, Muddy Waters and BB King get multiple entries, wild West Coast and Texas bluesmen like T-Bone Walker and Clarence Gatemouth Brown also get their propers, and while the main emphasis is on the dudes who plugged in, acoustic players such as Fred McDowell also get a nod or two. The book draws on a variety of writers, and reflects a variety of interviewing and narrative styles -- most of the material originally appeared in "Guitar Player" magazine, but while some technical points are investigated, the book is an even better source of information about the players themselves -- their personalities, their stories, their world view. A true blues fan should enjoy this book quite a bit!" [1 copy available]

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: LED ZEPPELIN UNCENSORED
by Richard Cole with Richard Trubo. 16 page B&W photo section. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1993 Harper paperback, first printing. Although unread, it has had some shelf wear handling at the photo section - not bad, but there. Content: Cole, tour manager to maestros of metal music Led Zeppelin throughout the band's 12-year existence, collaborates with Trubo, a syndicated journalist, on this sordid tell-all. Alcohol, cocaine and heroin abuse, shameless groupies and perverse pranks figure largely in the saga. Cole boasts of his and the band's phenomenal appetites for liquor, drugs and sex while denouncing those who say Led Zeppelin harmed the international legions of teenage girls who routinely sought rock-star notches in their bedposts. He clearly enjoyed the company of drummer John Bonham, who died of alcohol-related causes in 1980; many trashy tales of "Bonzo's" booze-soaked shenanigans appear here. Conversely, guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page, who never confided details of his occult interests, remains an enigma. Vocalist Robert Plant is generally portrayed as hostile and arrogant, and bassist John Paul Jones receives the least mention, perhaps due to his down-to-earth, less excessive behavior. Fans who don't mind a roadie's braggadocio and sexism will find many an explicit anecdote in these pages. Questions welcome [1 copy available]

THIS IS OURS: Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors
by Tim McGraw with Martin Huxley. Color & B&W photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 2002 Atria hardcover (coffee-table book) & DJ (in mylar jacket) first edition, first printing. DJ has light edgewear top edge. Content: This is McGraw's story of the making of his album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors. To hear the singer and country music stalwarts tell it, McGraw broke all the rules on his latest outing: rather than record in Nashville with technically brilliant session players, McGraw decided to have his buddies from his road band, the Dancehall Doctors, back him in an upstate New York farmhouse-cum-studio. From the project's initial planning and reception to its ultimate realization, this volume presents a view of McGraw and his band that's as slick and upbeat as the best PR material. McGraw loves and respects his long-time band members (they're the "guys who knew you when you were borrowing money from them," he says affectionately); and they, in turn, seem deeply fond and admiring of him. In first-person snippets that dot the text, musicians, producers, engineers and techies wax poetic about McGraw's artistic integrity, his intuitiveness, his desire to please fans, his ability to pick songs (he doesn't write his own) and his refusal to do easy hits - even how much women appreciate his posterior. There are basic biographical snippets - Tim dropped out of college, taught himself how to play guitar and then moved to Nashville; even when he couldn't pay the heating bills, his friends knew he'd become a star-and lots of pictures of McGraw and friends, as well as reasonably interesting discussions about making the album itself, which will be released simultaneously Questions welcome. WAY UP NORTH IN DIXIE: A Black Family's Claim to the Confederate Anthem
by Howard L. Sacks and Judith Rose Sacks. B&W era photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2000 Smithsonian Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: Relying on family and public records and oral history, the authors (Howard Sacks is chair of the Department of Sociology/Anthropology at Kenyon College; Judith Sacks is an editor and researcher) present a credible and carefully researched case which attributes authorship of the Confederal anthem Dixie to an African American family of musicians. Thomas and Ellen Snowden, liberated from slavery and having moved to the Ohio frontier, formed the Snowden Family Band; they and then their children performed banjo and fiddle music for black and white audiences from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Dan Emmett, a white minstrel performer, claimed to have written Dixie in 1859; but the authors argue that the Snowdens, who swapped songs with Emmett, either wrote the song or coauthored it. The Sacks's analysis of 18th-century African American musical culture documents the ways in which this music was appropriated by white performers. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

WONDERLAND AVENUE: Tales of Glamour and Excess
by Danny Sugerman. Condition: Gently pre-read to page 103, 1990 Plume Trade Paperback, 4th printing. Short diagonal crease bottom front cover corner with light to moderate tanning to page edges. Content: At age 13, the author of No One Gets Out of Here Alive was given a job opening The Doors's fan mail and was on his way to becoming a successful rock music promoter. This book is the story of the next eight years of Sugerman's life, a time in which alcohol, parties, "the usual gaggle of weirdos andparade of girls, druggies, roadies, musicians, music-industry types, and fans" all contributed to a life-threatening drug problem and admission to a mental hospital. Sugerman maintains the innocence of youth in his dialogue, but his excellent descriptions are seasoned with the insight of a man who has lived for over a decade after having made the decision to live rather than give into drugs and dying.
