THE BEST CHRISTIAN WRITING 2001
edited by John Wilson. Intro by Larry Woiwode. Condition: NEW 2001 HarperSanFrancisco Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: This book is a smorgasbord of goodies--some sweet, others sour, often spicy, and occasionally bland. John Wilson cuts and pastes from a variety of periodicals to show how diverse "the best" Christian writing can be. The selections range from lightly academic to everyman accessible. In "Confessions of a Reluctant Catholic," Alice McDermott offers a brief memoir about her return to faith, because "reluctantly, we submit to what it seems we have always known," while Elizabeth Fox-Genovese looks at how her adult profession of belief is received in academia in "A Conversion Story." There's understated humor in "Seminary Sanity," as Sarah Hinlicky recounts her experience with a mandated psychiatric evaluation before entering the ministry. Fatherhood scores a double with Edward Ericson Jr.'s poignant tribute to his dad, "A Father to the End," and the moving reflections of Scott Sawyer's "Earthly Fathers." Stephen L. Carter, Philip Yancey, Richard John Neuhaus, and Reynolds Price are among those who add their voices to this volume. Thoughtful readers who don't connect with all of the essays will still find enough gourmet fare here to make a satisfying meal. [1 copy available]

BLESSED CHILD: A Novel
by Bill Bright and Ted Dekker. Condition: NEW 2001 Word Publishing Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: Jason Marker, an embittered Peace Corps representative, must spirit the 10-year-old wunderkind Caleb out of Ethiopia with the help of Leiah, a Red Cross nurse who is covered with disfiguring scars. Upon their arrival in the U.S., Caleb is put in the care of the nefarious Father Nikolous at the rather stereotypically cruel Sunnyside Orphanage. Caleb's extraordinary powers manifest themselves early in the tale: raising a man from the dead, restoring sight to a blind boy, healing a paraplegic. Even as religious authorities are thrown into turmoil about the source of Caleb's amazing abilities, Father Nikolous loses no time in exploiting those powers for his own financial gain. When a powerful politician realizes that Caleb holds the key to the destruction of his presidential ambitions, he contracts for the boy's murder. The romance between Jason and Leiah follows a predictable course, although Jason's unconditional acceptance of her scarred body offers a nice touch. Caleb is satisfactorily presented as an uncorrupted innocent who finds the world a stumbling block to his childlike faith. [351 pages] Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

CATHOLICS: A Novel AND The Conflict (DVD Movie of the Book) 2 for 1
by Brian Moore. Condition: Gently pre-read 1972 McClelland & Stewart (Toronto) slim hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). The interior has no problems, but the DJ does have problems: repaired nics top edge with tanning to the edges and rubbings to the gilt lettering. Content: On a remote isle off the Kerry coast, a group of monks has decided to take a stand against its masters in Rome - contrary to modem edicts, the brethren have chosen to retain the old traditions and ceremonies of worship. Their ancient practices do not go unnoticed however, and as they start to attract crowds of curious tourists pilgrims even - someone has to stop them. But when Father James Kinsella arrives with strict orders from the Vatican, he does not find, as he anticipates, a community united in defiance, but one riven by dogma and doubt. In this masterly evocation of an island brotherhood, Brian Moore explores the subtle boundaries that shift between duty and faith, between obedience and dissent. The 1973 made-for-TV movie is called The Conflict and was directed by Jack Gold and starred a very young Martin Sheen, Trevor Howard, Cyril Cusack, and Sir Michael Gambon ("Dumbledore"). It is a thought provoking take on the Catholic Church proclaiming that Mass would be said in a country's native language and no long in Latin. This is a digitally remastered DVD. Questions welcome. FINDING GOD IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS
by Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware. Condition: NEW 2001 Tyndale small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: There's more to Middle-earth than meets the eye, argue Kurt Bruner and Jim War. J.R.R. Tolkien, a devout Christian, helped bring C.S. Lewis into the faith and met weekly with Lewis and Charles Williams at an Oxford pub for heated religious and literary discussions that informed The Lord of the Rings. Although Bruner and Ware avoid any simplistic claim that Tolkien's saga is "a covert allegory of the Gospel," the authors assert that the books have evangelistic power because they "can open the heart's back door when the front door is locked." Twenty-one short chapters describe various scenes and themes from Tolkien's work in order to illustrate truths of Christian life. For instance, Frodo and Sam's awareness that their adventures are part of a larger story "reflects the Christian understanding of providence, that we are all part of a story being written by the creator of all that is." Finding God successfully clarifies the ways that Tolkien's Christian worldview influenced the creation of his fantasy world, while respecting the artistic integrity of his achievement. THE LAST RAINBOW
by Parke Godwin. Dual cover art by Stephanie Gerber. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1995 Bantam Trade Paperback, first printing. Light edgewear to cover edges with pale hinge crease. Interior clean & tight but with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "This book is a lovely intermingling of two worlds. On the one side is Patrick, a fiery young priest enamoured with the idea of leading Ireland to the faith. On the other side is the Prydn: a nomadic people blessed with a great love of life and Earth, but slowly marginalised into the feared and hated faerie folk. Patrick is drawn into a small tribe of Prydn, most of whom shine with their own fierce diamond-bright personalities: thoughtful, determined Dorelai, gentle Drust, bold Cru, and a host of others. The interplay and exchange of knowledge between the two worlds--the world of Christianity and the world of magic -- is so gradual and sensual that it almost feels like lovemaking. Soon enough, though, we come to realise that both Patrick and the prydn queen Dorelai share a commons sin -- pride -- that draws them irresistably into the climax of the tale. Stylistic shifts abound, allowing the readers to look through the minds and eyes of all the myriad cultures displayed. The use of language is rich and deft, frequently dissolving into comedy, and just with as much mastery turning into a passionate love story and a richly wrought history. There's something for everybody at the end of this Rainbow." [1 copy available]

MEMOIRS OF PONTIUS PILATE: A Novel
by James R. Mills. Condition: UNREAD 2000 Revell small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Content: Thirty years after the death of Jesus of Nazareth, an exiled Pontius Pilate compiles his memoirs into a history of the Jewish faith and the rise of Christianity. He contemplates his role in sentencing Jesus to death by crucifixion and puzzles at the rapid spread of the teachings of that simple man. A true politician, he denies any blame for his part in Jesus' final hours. Instead, he lays the blame at the feet of the crowd who cried for Barabbas to be released and at the feet of the temple officials who called for his trial. Subtly, Pilate's fascination with Jesus and his teachings gives life to his recital, and glimpses of Pilate's own thoughts and feelings surface. Mills's (Gospel According to Pontius Pilate) expertise with his subject provides unexpected depth to this intriguing glimpse at a man vilified for his place in history. [1 copy available]

Light shelfwear to bottom board edges. The DJ has edgewear and rubbings along "hinge." Name plate loose endpage. Actually, better than it sounds. Content: Reviewer: "Paul Maier, a nationally recognized teacher of History broke ground with this classic historical biography of Pontius Pilate. Rejecting the carelessness that dominates the genre of historical fiction, Dr. Maier created his own genre which could be called "documented historical fiction". He adopts 3 rules, 1) He doesn't invent characters and only uses names of real people 2) He uses information in the primary sources whenever possible and only speculates on plot features where the sources are lacking. 3) He includes documented footnotes for a great number of events in the life of Pilate, these not only lead you to the primary sources, they also give the author's justification for how he interprets them and incorporates them into the story. If you want to read the Christ story from a new perspective, this book will give you an eyewitness account from the eye sockets of one of the key players in Christ' life. You will understand the political background to the New Testament and gain a new appreciation for how the miraculous events in Jesus ministry were interpreted."

ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON AND THE QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL
written & illuminated by Edward Hays (Father Hays). Great B&W drawings illustrate. Condition UNREAD 1998 Forest of Peace Trade Paperback, 11th pritning. Very light edge wear. The one drawback to this book is that the publisher has given us a weaker than normal binding. All of the copies are like this. Content: Once again, parable-man and storyteller Edward Hays opens the doors of the mind's magic theatre and provides a collection of mystic maps to guide readers on the path to the most fabulous of all hidden treasures--the Holy Grail. Reviewer: "Fr. Hays is a gifted storyteller. His parables find their way through cynicism and doubt, and work in the reader's heart at a profound level. Having read nearly all of Fr. Hays's books, I recommend this book as a starting place for his compassionate, loving, inclusive, and atavistic theology. It is the story of a man with a deep spiritual longing who is uncertain how to fulfill it. His mentor appears in the form of an ancient dragon offering assistance, guidance, and a slyly humorous wisdom. This is not a book to be read once and put aside, nor is it a book to be read quickly. It will seem new-age-y to some readers, but it isn't. It will appeal to those who are hurting, those who are young at heart, teenagers, and especially to those whose religious background includes ritual. Everyone embarking on, or already on, a spiritual journey will find something holy here." [1 copy available]

THE SHEPHERD (Illustrated Novel)
by Frederick Forsyth. B&W illustrations by Robert Hunt. Condition: UNREAD 1992 Bantam hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Problem: Gift inscription loose end page. Content: "It's Christmas Eve 1957, and an English pilot is flying his Vampire from Germany, on his way home for Christmas. But when the electrical circuits fail, he is suddenly on his own in a lonely sky, unable to contact the men below who alone can guide him home through the foggy skies. With fuel running out, radio contact gone, and navigation impossible, and when it seems that he's destined to ditch only to freeze to death in a deserted sea, a miraculous saviour appears. A World War II style plane appears out of the gloom, and its brave pilot "shepherds" the helpless flyer down through the frosty night sky towards safety. Will he succeed? And why does the airport seem deserted? And who is the mysterious shepherd? Although "The Shepherd" is a very short novel that can easily be read in under an hour, it doesn't hinder Forsyth from capturing your attention. He cleverly heightens the intensity of the action and suspense by using the first person point of view. The stricken pilot's fears and bewilderment quickly become your own, until they are resolved in a spine-chilling last-page climax that raises as many questions as it answers. Has the feel of the great "A Guy Named Joe." [1 copy available]

THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN
by Morris L. West. Movie art cover (Anthony Quinn). Condition: UNREAD 1969 Dell paperback second printing. Tiny tiny edgewear. Two small spots on fore edges. Interior clean & tight. Content: This story takes place during the height of the Cold War. Archbishop Kiril Lakato, longtime political prisoner of the Soviet Union, is released by his long-time captors. He is released to Rome, where he is installed as a cardinal for his faithfulness to the church. In quick succession after this, the pope dies, and an election takes place. Remarkably, Kiril the Russian is elected pope, after giving a moving account of his time in captivity to assembled cardinals weary of the election process, and shortly thereafter commits the church to a risky idea of intervention between the major powers, to the dismay of many of the fellow cardinals, who believe the new pope is following a dangerous path. With a few changes, we could be talking about Pope John Paul II. The book is better than the movie, but the movie is good. Non-Catholics could get a bit lost in the theology and terminology. A TIME FOR JUDAS
by Morley Callaghan. Condition: UNREAD (but not perfect) Avon Canada paperback, first printing. Binding glue wrinkles down spine with small edgewear. Interior clean & tight with light tanning to page edges. Content: Callaghan has been called the "Lloyd C. Douglas of Canada," and this book will leave no doubt that he should have been a bigger name in literature. This book presents a dramatic new interpretation of the final days of Christ on earth. Seen through the eyes of Philo, a corrupt and sensual Greek scribe working for Pontius Pilate, here is all the intrigue and passion of a Jerusalem divided between swaggering Romans and rebelious Jews, seething with prostitutes and bandits, and rocked by the arrival of a man claiming to be the Messiah, the Son of God. Callaghan recounts a very different story of Judas the betrayer, one that is fascinating, psychologically complex, and ultimately a tale of love that will linger long after the final line has been read. Worth the read. [1 copy available]

UPON THIS ROCK: The Life of St. Peter
by Walter F. Murphy, the author of The Vicar of Christ. Condition: UNREAD but not perfect. 1987 Ballantine Books paperback with tiny edgewear and a diagonal crease front and back cover. Interior clean & tight with light tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "Murphy's Peter is not the perfect first pope of legend, but a man driven by the shame of denying Christ. He is afflicted by jealosy of John and an all too active sex drive. Still, he perserveres to lead the early church as he hopes Christ would want. Many Biblical and historic figures play a part in this painstakingly detailed piece of historical fiction. A darn good read!" Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
