ANSWERED PRAYERS: Miracles and Milagros Along the Border
by Eileen Oktavec. B&W photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 1998 University of Arizona Press Trade PB, third printing. Foreword by Bernard Fontana. Content: Examined here is the age-old practice of using, as a petition to the saints, tiny gold and silver figures of women, men, hearts, eyes, limbs, babies, children, cars, boats, and many other items that need fixing or healing, all of which are known as milagros. Oktavec's book provides a thorough history of milagros (the usage actually originated in Europe and was brought to the New World with the conquistadors). She talks with persons who have had their prayers answered and observes many of the faithful as they visit statues of their patron saints to request favors or blessings. Milagros are usually left as an expression of thanks for favors granted or as a tangible reminder to the saint that the favor still needs granting. However, as Oktavec discovers, they are increasingly being used in jewelry and other decorative arts. Answered Prayers is a superb look at the intensity of religious faith and a brief glimpse of the fascinating cultural traditions that support the customs and beliefs associated with milagros. ENCOUNTERS WITH MERTON (Spiritual Reflections series)
by Henri J. M. Nouwen. Condition: NEW 2004 Crossroads Trade Paperback, third printing. Content: Reviewer: "This book was written early in Nouwen's career, before he was so famous as a writer and teacher. In it, he struggles with the life and legacy of Thomas Merton, the bestselling Catholic monk and mystic. Each of the main chapters is divided into two parts. The first part offers an overview of a major theme in Merton's life and work, including the people who influenced Merton the most and Merton's encounters with other religious traditions. The second part gives excerpts from Merton's writing, which are intended for meditation and private reflection. It discusses Merton in a way that avoids the pointless controversies about his life (did he have an affair with a woman after he became a monk...) and sticks to what readers of Merton care about most, which is his insights into human life and into God. At the same time, the book reveals much about Henri Nouwen himself and the way he understands the Christian spiritual life. It's almost as though we see him most clearly in the presence of a "father" figure." [1 copy availaable]

HOLY BLOOD, HOLY GRAIL
by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. B&W photo section. Maps. Condition: 1983 Dell Paperback edition, 17th printing. Pale spine crease with small edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Content: The authors spent over 10 years on their own kind of quest for the Holy Grail, into the secretive history of early France. What they found, researched with the tenacity and attention to detail that befits any great quest, is a tangled and intricate story of politics and faith that reads like a mystery novel. It is the story of the Knights Templar, and a behind-the-scenes society called the Prieure de Sion, and its involvement in reinstating descendants of the Merovingian bloodline into political power. Why? The authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail assert that their explorations into early history ultimately reveal that Jesus may not have died on the cross, but lived to marry and father children whose bloodline continues today. The authors' point here is not to compromise or to demean Jesus, but to offer another, more complete perspective of Jesus as God's incarnation in man. The power of this secret, which has been carefully guarded for hundreds of years, has sparked much controversy. For all the sensationalism and hoopla surrounding this book and the alternate history that it outlines, the authors are careful to keep their perspective and sense of skepticism alive in its pages, explaining carefully and clearly how they came to draw such combustible conclusions. THE INQUISITION (Turning Points in World History Series)
edited by Brenda Stalcup. Condition: NEW 2001 Greenhaven Press Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: This anthology of excerpts from scholarly works opens with a brief overview of the Inquisition's 800-year history, but most of the book is made up of the 24 readings. Some are taken from standard historical works, and others feature recent scholarship and new interpretations about the complex interactions between the religious and civil forces that created and sustained the tribunal's investigations. The readings represent a wide variety of viewpoints, including those that attack and defend the motives and actions of both the Church and civil authorities. The five main chapters discuss the roots and beginning of the Inquisition, its resulting trials and punishments, the Spanish Inquisition and its aftermath, and gradual conclusion of the persecution. Several readings discuss the Inquisition's impact on national governments, Jews, and the indigenous peoples of the Spanish New World. An appendix of 26 primary-source documents supplements the readings, and the list for further reading is extensive. Although this is an informative and often fascinating book, readers will need to have considerable background knowledge about both medieval history and the Catholic Church in order to be able to understand its themes and very difficult vocabulary. Intended for Grade 10 and up, this may be a bit difficult for high school students, IMHO Questions welcome. [1 copy availaable]

THE LAST LETTERS OF THOMAS MORE
edited by Alvaro De Silva. Condition: NEW 2001 Wm. B. Eerdmans Trade Paperback, second printing. Tiny, tiny edgewear. Content: De Silva has gathered together the letters Thomas More wrote to Margaret Roper, Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Dr. Wilson, and others two years before his execution. Any More enthusiast will treasure this collection beyond measure, as it offers a clear window onto the soul of one of history's noblest figures. The statesman's plight becomes the reader's very own: confined in the Tower of London, awaiting the inevitable chopping block. What emerges most poignantly from the letters is More's selfless integrity as distinct from the stubborn individualism so often attributed to him. According to de Silva's own lucid and informative introduction, "More did not exhibit an individualism or an autonomy of the 'I' that has no room for anything else...he simply knew that to take the oath [to Henry VIII] would mean the loss of his own self, his own spiritual integrity." Endnotes elaborate on cultural, political, and religious allusions that would otherwise confuse one unfamiliar with the time period. Questions welcome. [2 copies availaable]

LITTLE SAINT
by Hannah Green. Condition: Very Good, gently pre-read Random House hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). Content: Green became entranced and eventually dedicated to a 12-year-old girl, who was known as Saint Foy. Betrayed by her father in 303 A.D., the French girl called Faith was tortured and beheaded for her refusal to worship the pagan goddess Diana and renounce her devotion to Christ. Green narrates in the first person, recounting her reaction and fascination when she first traveled to Conques, France, and saw the golden statue of Saint Foy (with the girl's bones embedded in the statue's heart). Although pilgrims from all centuries and all parts of the world have paid homage to Saint Foy's statue, Green had not anticipated the deep visceral reaction she would have when she first beheld the little saint. "It is a shrine," she writes. "And in some mystic way it suggests to the mind's eye more strongly than any imagined likeness could the presence of Saint Foy herself as she was, with her young fresh skin and the radiance, the life, in her face, the light, and as she is: bone and spirit come to God." This is a three-layered, masterful piece in which Green offers a biography of this young saint and the influence she's had over the centuries, a profile of the highly unique village that hosts her statue, and finally a memoir of Green's own spiritual epiphanies born from this saintly encounter. PILATE: The Biography of an Invented Man
by Ann Wroe. Condition: NEW 1999 Jonathan Cape (London) Trade paperback. Tiny "ding" top front corner - otherwise perfect. Content: This book offers a reconstructed life of the Roman official who, by ordering the execution of Jesus of Nazareth but otherwise serving with little distinction, managed to become simultaneously famous and obscure. Outside the Gospels, which each bring the governor on stage for a brief if highly charged cameo appearance, there are only a few references to Pilate in contemporary sources. Where other biographers would see a historical desert, Wroe sees the tantalizing mirages that have sprung up over the centuries, from the fourth-century Acta Pilati to medieval mystery plays. She weaves these nonhistorical speculations together with well-researched accounts of first-century Roman lives, producing a shifting but suggestive portrait of an ultimately very human functionary. The writing is both precise and rich (as one might expect from the American editor of the Economist), and the insights into human character ring consistently true, but Wroe's bibliography is alarmingly scant when it comes to historical research on Jesus (who, after all, presents similar problems to biographers). PRACTICAL MYSTICISM
by Evelyn Underhill. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 1970-80 Dutton paperback, no edition given. Pale diagonal crease top front cover corner, tiny edgewear, & moderate tanning to interior pages. Better than it sounds. Content: First written in 1915, this is a classic gem on Western mysticism. What makes this book valuable is that it cuts to the essence of what mysticism is and how it is relevant to everyday people living in the world. It is written in a lyrical almost poetical style, which is to say that the author has the power to make difficult concepts come alive with great impact and beauty. There are many books on Western Mysticism, but this one is very concise and delivers the essentials in an easy to digest manner. While some of the language is outdated and the world has changed in many ways, the underpinning of man and the world have changed very little. Practical Mysticism reviews the works of the greatest Western mystics, including Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, and Thomas ŕ Kempis. Underhill’s goal is to guide her readers on a journey toward mystical consciousness, to teach them to see the “eternal beauty beyond and beneath apparent ruthlessness.” [1 copy availaable]

THE SEVEN MOUNTAINS OF THOMAS MERTON
by Michael Mott. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 1985 Houghton Mifflin large soft cover (690 pages), assumed first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: While many biographies and studies of the writer and monk Thomas Merton have been published over the years, this remains the official biography sanctioned by the Thomas Merton Legacy Trust. Mott was given access to all of the private journals that, according to Merton's legacy, were not to be made public for 25 years after his death. Mott's goal in this work was to approach the writer in a balanced manner--to correct the record where Merton himself may have had the facts wrong (early childhood material, for example), and to offer a different interpretation at times from the one Merton himself comes to in his own autobiographical writings. Above all Mott is not writing hagiography: this is no life of a saint, at least not in the stereotyped sense. But it is clearly the life of a real 20th-century man who, along with the expected dead ends and blind alleys, did find himself listening to a real call and following it as deeply and as passionately as his life would allow. WHO WAS SAINT PATRICK?
by E. A. Thompson. Condition: NEW 1999 Boydell Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), reprint. Content: E.A. Thompson, emeritus professor of classics at Nottingham University, holds that absolutely all we know about St. Patrick comes from his Confession and Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. His analysis of these documents gives many details of life in 5th-century Britain and Ireland, debunks medieval lives of Patrick and much modern scholarship, and shows that Patrick was not Ireland's first bishop, did not work miracles, and did not drive the snakes from Ireland. What he did do was decide, against much opposition, to devote his old age to converting Irish pagans, and thus he became the first Western bishop to evangelize outside the boundaries of the Roman Empire.
