ABRAHAM ON TRIAL: The Social Legacy of Biblical Myth
by Carol Delaney. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Princeton Univ. Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: The story of the sacrifice of Isaac is at the heart of the three monotheistic religions that see Abraham as their father in faith: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Writing from a feminist perspective, Delaney considers the traditional interpretation, i.e., that Abraham's faith is proved by his willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command. Delaney then examines the role this story has played in modern ideas of paternal authority, taking as an example the case of a father who killed his daughter and claimed at his trial a few years ago that he did it because God told him to. Delaney examines the role the story plays in the psychological literature as well as in religion and argues against its perpetuation. While not all readers will agree with her interpretations, she certainly offers a thought-provoking argument. Questions welcome. [1 copy availaable]

ACRES OF DIAMONDS
by Russell H. Conwell. Condition: UNREAD 1972 Spire Books paperback (no edition or printing given). Interior clean & tight - no tanning. Tiny rubbing spots bottom black cover. Tiny edgewear. Content: This book is small, eloquent, and easy to understand. It is about life, success, money, and priorities, what these things are and aren't, and will continue to challenge the way most of us choose to live our lives for years. Acres of Diamonds is a lecture that Russell Conwell, founder of Temple University, delivered more than 6,000 times across the country. Through this lecture, Conwell debunks the idea that it is noble to be poor, an idea that far too many Christians share. He illustrates that it is our duty as Christians to use our gifts to honestly earn riches, because you can do more good with riches than without. Christian classic literature. [1 copy availaable]

by Max Heindel. Condition: NEW 1986 Rosicrucian Fellowship small soft cover, fifth edition. Content: 1931. Within the pages of this little volume are found some of the most priceless gems belonging to the deepest phases of the Christian religion. The various important steps in the life of Christ Jesus which are outlined here form the general plan of Initiation for humanity. Heindel gives a deeper and more mystic insight into this alchemical process as it takes place in the body of man. THE BIRTH OF CHRISTIANITY: Reality and Myth
by Joel Carmichael. Condition: UNREAD 1992 Dorset Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Light edgewear to DJ plus a light crease front panel. Content: Reviewer: "Carmichael presents a most compelling argument for the evolution of the Christian paradigm from Jesus being one of many "End of the World" zealot agitators, to becoming the Son of God, to becoming "Lord." He paints an historical picture of Palestine (and the rest of the Roman empire) during the period immediately preceeding the life of Jesus until a century afterward that changes the way most of us will think of that place and time again. Furthermore, he helps explain the critical role of Paul and the pagan "gentiles" (with their own mythology) in creating the mystery of Jesus out of the Man Jesus. Students of systems, complexity theory and chaos theory will recognize the forces at play in the evolving nature of Jesus, an evolution that continues to the present day. Just like the study of paleontology, however, it is impossible to understand the systems we witness today without a thorough understanding of the context in which they evolved. This book attempts (rather well) to do just that. There are many devout Christians who decry the need for understanding the context because they believe the scriptures to be perfect as they are, preserved by the very hand of God. Yet to study their context causes you to see immediately the flaw in that line of reasoning. Carmichael helps us see the scriptures from the point of view in which they were written, not from a 21st century point of view, and the difference is not insignificant!" Questions welcome. BREAKING & MENDING: Divoce and God's Grace
by Mary Lou Redding. Condition: NEW 2000 Upper Room Books Trade Paperback, second printing. Content: In struggling to make sense of her own painful divorce, Mary Lou Redding looked to the Bible where she found guidance and hope. Her intimate book weaves her personal story with those from scripture to help other Christians who are facing divorce find God's grace in the midst of pain. Breaking and Mending looks at the spiritual issues of divorce, rather than the sociological ones, and allows the scriptures to illuminate and heal those who are facing this difficult transition. For example, chapter one deals with broken dreams and uses the story of Hosea and Gomer. Later chapters focus on forgiveness, breaking old patterns, forging a new identity as a single person, and searching for healthy relationships. Honest and straightforward, Redding has written a book which addresses the hard issues of divorce, but always with hope in God's unfolding grace. [1 copy availaable]

ENCOUNTERS WITH MERTON (Spiritual Reflections series)
by Henri J. M. Nouwen. Condition: NEW 2004 Crossroads Trade Paperback, third printing. Content: Reviewer: "This book was written early in Nouwen's career, before he was so famous as a writer and teacher. In it, he struggles with the life and legacy of Thomas Merton, the bestselling Catholic monk and mystic. Each of the main chapters is divided into two parts. The first part offers an overview of a major theme in Merton's life and work, including the people who influenced Merton the most and Merton's encounters with other religious traditions. The second part gives excerpts from Merton's writing, which are intended for meditation and private reflection. It discusses Merton in a way that avoids the pointless controversies about his life (did he have an affair with a woman after he became a monk...) and sticks to what readers of Merton care about most, which is his insights into human life and into God. At the same time, the book reveals much about Henri Nouwen himself and the way he understands the Christian spiritual life. It's almost as though we see him most clearly in the presence of a "father" figure." [1 copy availaable]

GENESIS AND THE BIG BANG: The Discovery of Harmony Between Modern Science and the Bible
by Gerald L. Schroeder, Ph.D. B&W charts illustrate. Condition: Gently pre-read 1992 Bantam Trade Paperback, 9th printing. Light edgewear with a pale diagonal crease bottom front cover corner. Interior clean & tight. Content: When Torah and natural science seem to conflict, one or the other is being incorrectly interpreted. That's the principle Gerald Schroeder propounds and defends in this remarkable volume. And one can only think that Moses Maimonides would have been delighted. What Schroeder argues, basically, is that the biblical account of creation in six days can be read as taking place over six literal days -- and that not only does this reading fail to conflict with modern science, indeed science itself supports that reading. The solution? The six days are "God's time," reckoned from within one frame of reference, and the millions of years with which science deals are "earth time," reckoned from within another. The two are reconciled by the theory of relativity. Moreover, this reading is firmly grounded in traditional Jewish texts that predated the theory of relativity by one or two thousand years. GOD'S LEADING LADY: Out of the Shadows and into the Light
by T. J. Jakes. Condition: Very gently pre-read, if at all, 2002 G. P. Putnam's hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), Crossings Book Club Edition. Name "plate" top front end page. Content: Bishop Jakes continues to uplift Christian women with this charge for them to step out of the shadows and take their positions onstage as God's leading ladies. The stage metaphor is carried throughout; Jakes encourages women to master the art of improvisation (to put aside pre-arranged scripts... and go with what works in the moment) and to transcend life's outtakes (embarrassing failures). The writing style is vintage Jakes: he poses rhetorical but energetic questions to the reader, shares personal examples from his own life and draws upon the models other women have provided for success. He profiles several biblical women who knew how to step into the limelight: Deborah, Jael, Mary the mother of Jesus, Ruth, Sarah, Tamar and Eve all get juicy roles in Jakes's production. He deals with some sticky biblical passages, arguing, for example, that the let-wives-be-subject-to-their-husbands verse in Ephesians has too often been taken out of context and used to suppress women and rob them of their voices. Jakes also points to modern-day leading ladies, such as radio magnate Cathy Hughes, television icon Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as role models. Some of his self-help advice is cliched; readers are asked to decide, for example, whether their trials will make them bitter or better. Overall, however, Jakes offers a fresh and compassionate summons for women to recognize their divine worth. [1 copy availaable]

HAS GOD ONLY ONE BLESSING?: Judaism as a Source of Christian Self-Understanding
by Mary C. Boys. B&W maps & photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2000 Paulist Press Trade Paperback, no printing given. Content: Desiring to improve Jewish-Christian relations, Boys provides both an ideological foundation for dialog and suggestions for church practice, emphasizing the Catholic experience. Notably, she offers a schematic description of how Christianity became distinct from Judaism and makes suggestions for Catholic liturgy about bridging the gap by changing how certain scriptures are read during the church calendar. Uniquely offering scholarship on many complex questions in one source, Boys also provides a valuable collocation of church policies. Books like Philip A. Cunningham's Education for Shalom (Liturgical Pr., 1995) or Helen P. Fry's Christian-Jewish Dialogue (Exeter Univ., 1996) focus on practical or theoretical discussion, respectively. Boys successfully marries the two, digging deep to propose applications of theological ideas. Though she builds her points well, she struggles with the broad spectrum of scholarly views or ideological backgrounds needed to explain them. Scholars will likely agree with her ideas while sensing that that they don't require the comprehensive scholarly underpinnings she attempts to supply. With lengthy endnotes and a bibliography. HOLY BLOOD, HOLY GRAIL
by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. B&W photo section. Maps. Condition: 1983 Dell Paperback edition, 17th printing. Pale spine crease with small edgewear. Interior clean & tight. Content: The authors spent over 10 years on their own kind of quest for the Holy Grail, into the secretive history of early France. What they found, researched with the tenacity and attention to detail that befits any great quest, is a tangled and intricate story of politics and faith that reads like a mystery novel. It is the story of the Knights Templar, and a behind-the-scenes society called the Prieure de Sion, and its involvement in reinstating descendants of the Merovingian bloodline into political power. Why? The authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail assert that their explorations into early history ultimately reveal that Jesus may not have died on the cross, but lived to marry and father children whose bloodline continues today. The authors' point here is not to compromise or to demean Jesus, but to offer another, more complete perspective of Jesus as God's incarnation in man. The power of this secret, which has been carefully guarded for hundreds of years, has sparked much controversy. For all the sensationalism and hoopla surrounding this book and the alternate history that it outlines, the authors are careful to keep their perspective and sense of skepticism alive in its pages, explaining carefully and clearly how they came to draw such combustible conclusions. JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS: A Jewish Life and the Emergence of Christianity
by Paula Fredriksen. B&W photos illustrate. Decorated end pages (maps). Condition: NEW 2000 Knopf hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), fourth printing. Content: This is scholarly without being pedantic, insightful without being revolutionary. Yet the central question it asks - "Why did Jesus die the way he did?" - strikes to the very core of the debate over the Historical Jesus. Fredriksen, Aurelio Professor of Scripture at Boston University, brings to this question enormous erudition drawn from the rabbinic writings, opening fresh ways of looking at the well-trodden Historical Jesus material. Her careful working through the serious historical issues surrounding the definition of "Gospel Truth," the nature of God and Israel in Roman antiquity - as well as the problem of Paul's renovation of the first Christians' view of Jesus - are important contributions to our understanding of Jesus' life. Unlike some other new biographies of Jesus emerging from the trade press, the scholarly apparatus for this text was not shed in the hopes of making it more acceptable to the general reader. The author's notes, far from merely documenting sources, contain interesting and useful augmentations. There is much new here, something that seems unusual for territory so heavily mined. Fredriksen's Jesus of Nazareth is one of those enviable scholarly works that is both a credible scholarly effort and a very good read. Questions welcome. [1 copy availaable]

JESUS SON OF MAN: Studies Contributory to a Modern Portrait
by George S. Duncan. Condition: Good+, 1949 Macmillan hardcover (only a panel of the DJ survives), first printing. Pale tanning to page edges and a "spot" on the fore edges. Interior clean & tight. Content: Can modern scholarship take us back, behind all credal statements, to the historical truth aboaut Jesus? This challenging volume, by one of the foremost British New Testament scholars, surveys the evidence and reaches many important conclusions. This book is not another life of Jesus but an acceptable modern portrait of the Man. Dr. Duncan's main thesis is that the terms used by Jesus and about Jesus cannot be understood from a technical analysis of their origin, but only in the light of the tremendous spiritual vision and consecretation of Jesus Himself, which gave to all these terms nw significance. THE LIFE OF MARY BAKER EDDY AND THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
by Willa Cather & Georgine Milmine. Introduction & afterword by David Stouck. B&W photos. Condition: NEW 1993 Univ. of Nebraska Press Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: The reissue of this 1909 biography, originally attributed to Milmine but actually written by Cather, will most interest Cather scholars. Although much of the work is rendered in pedestrian prose, academics can search its pages for evidence of the author's developing style and, as Stouck points out in his introduction, elements of Eddy's character that seem to surface in Cather's later fictional creations. When it was first published, near the end of Eddy's life, the book caused a ripple in the Christian Science community--and no wonder, since it methodically and convincingly portrays their church's founder, a shrewd and forceful woman, as temperamental, greedy, vindictive and genuinely eccentric. Discussed are Eddy's early years in New Hampshire, her tutelage under Phineas P. Quimby, who had never studied medicine and who "professed to make his patients well and happy purely by the benevolent power of mind," her work as a "teacher of moral science," the evolution of her book Science and Health and Christian Science's development from a handful of enthusiastic healers to a full-grown institution with its "Mother Church" in Boston. MEMORIS OF THE SPIRIT
edited by Edwin S. Gaustad. B&W photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 1999 Eerdmans hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: There are many rooms in the Father's mansion, we're told, and this collection of American religious autobiographies is beautiful proof of that truth. Arranged chronologically, the collection takes us from the 17th-century captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson to another kind of captivity in the contemporary story of Barbara Harrison, who lived with and ultimately left the Jehovah's Witnesses. Along the way we get glimpses of familiar faces (Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jimmy Carter, Billy Graham), and some that are likely to be less familiar: Orestes Brownson, Mary Antin, Virginia Sorenson. Mostly Christian, but including a few representatives of other faith traditions (Isaac Wise, Alan Watts, Paramahansa Yogananda, Black Elk), the editor has selected and edited well, providing useful single-page introductions to each selection. PILATE: The Biography of an Invented Man
by Ann Wroe. Condition: NEW 1999 Jonathan Cape (London) Trade paperback. Tiny "ding" top front corner - otherwise perfect. Content: This book offers a reconstructed life of the Roman official who, by ordering the execution of Jesus of Nazareth but otherwise serving with little distinction, managed to become simultaneously famous and obscure. Outside the Gospels, which each bring the governor on stage for a brief if highly charged cameo appearance, there are only a few references to Pilate in contemporary sources. Where other biographers would see a historical desert, Wroe sees the tantalizing mirages that have sprung up over the centuries, from the fourth-century Acta Pilati to medieval mystery plays. She weaves these nonhistorical speculations together with well-researched accounts of first-century Roman lives, producing a shifting but suggestive portrait of an ultimately very human functionary. The writing is both precise and rich (as one might expect from the American editor of the Economist), and the insights into human character ring consistently true, but Wroe's bibliography is alarmingly scant when it comes to historical research on Jesus (who, after all, presents similar problems to biographers). POLITICS, RELIGION AND THE COMMON GOOD: Advancing a Distinctly American Conversation About Religion's Role in Our Shared Life
by Martin E. Marty with Jonathan Moore. Condition: NEW 2000 Jossey Bass hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Ordained minister and esteemed author Martin E. Marty examines the sensitive role of religion in contemporary U.S. government and politics in this slender but brave book. Marty has never been afraid of controversy or dialog, and this book is guaranteed to spark both. In his opening chapter Marty explains the perils of integrating religion into the fray of politics--such as the potential for fundamental extremism and religious violence. But in his second chapter, "Worth the Risk," he delves into a persuasive argument for blending church and state, with assertions such as "religion can combat apathy" and "religious people can provide a voice for the voiceless." In follow-up chapters Marty discusses ways that religion can meld with government and how it could actually improve the quality of civic representation. The writing style is smooth and journalistic in tone (Marty is also a senior editor at Christian Century), yet the material represents an expansive vision and shows an obvious depth. PRACTICAL MYSTICISM
by Evelyn Underhill. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 1970-80 Dutton paperback, no edition given. Pale diagonal crease top front cover corner, tiny edgewear, & moderate tanning to interior pages. Better than it sounds. Content: First written in 1915, this is a classic gem on Western mysticism. What makes this book valuable is that it cuts to the essence of what mysticism is and how it is relevant to everyday people living in the world. It is written in a lyrical almost poetical style, which is to say that the author has the power to make difficult concepts come alive with great impact and beauty. There are many books on Western Mysticism, but this one is very concise and delivers the essentials in an easy to digest manner. While some of the language is outdated and the world has changed in many ways, the underpinning of man and the world have changed very little. Practical Mysticism reviews the works of the greatest Western mystics, including Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, and Thomas à Kempis. Underhill’s goal is to guide her readers on a journey toward mystical consciousness, to teach them to see the “eternal beauty beyond and beneath apparent ruthlessness.” [1 copy availaable]

by Dennis Covington. B&W photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1996 Penguin Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edgeewear with light rubbing bottom front hinge.
