BRIGID'S CLOAK: An Ancient Irish Story
by Bryce Milligan. Beautifully illustrated by Helen Cann. Condition: NEW 2002 Eerdmans hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Tiny edge wear to DJ top edge. Content: Milligan's folktale-flavored telling, which incorporates elements of Druidic and early Christian beliefs, introduces Brigid, one of Ireland's favorite saints, in a story that reveals the origin of her reputation for generosity. Borders of Celtic designs frame Cann's mixed-media pictures and add both authenticity and wonder to the tale, which begins with her birth and goes on to tell of a vision in which she is transplanted to Jerusalem at the time of Jesus' birth, welcomes Mary and Joseph, and helps care for the newborn baby Jesus. A full-page close-up of a Druid wizard holding the infant Brigid, wrapped in the blue cloak he gave her, is particularly impressive; his light-green eyes exude wisdom as his white hair flows around his face. Just as good is the portrait of the Holy Family, with Brigid in their midst, which evokes the peace and happiness Brigid feels at Mary's kind words, "Thank you, child of the West. Your generosity will be remembered always." An author's note explains more about Brigid and the stories surrounding her cloak. Grades 1 - 4. [1 copy left]

CONFUCIUS: The Golden Rule
by Russell Freedman (Newbery Medal Winner). Color illustrations by Frederic Clement. Condition: UNREAD 2002 Arthur A. Levine Books (Scholastic) hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. PROBLEM: Top book & DJ spine are damaged - most likely in shipping - DJ has been "repaired" but the book cannot be repaired. The interior is perfect with beautiful illustrations. Content: This is an intelligent, comprehensive biography of the 5th-century B.C. philosopher Confucius, whose teachings have influenced the development of modern government and education in both China and the West. Freedman draws on stories, legends and collected dialogues from The Analects of Confucius, written by his students, to reveal a man of deep perceptions as well as great humor. Clement's moody, ethereal illustrations complement the thoughtful text yet play up the mystery of Confucius's life. Like worn pages ripped from an ancient tome, the rubbed, faded images strewn with photorealistic fruits, petals and berries plunge readers into otherworldly scenes. For today's students, this portrait is a comprehensible introduction to Eastern thought. Just as Confucius "prodded [his students] to think in new ways," it will open new doors for young readers. Ages 8-12. Questions welcome.

THE FRIENDLY SNOWFLAKE: A Fable of Faith, Love and Family
by M. Scott Peck, M.D. Wonderfully sweet color illustrtions by Christopher Scott Peck. Condition: Gently pre-read, IF at all, 1992 Turner Publishing hardcover (pictorial boards) and DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first pritning. Content: Reviewer: "This book is an adorable story about a young girls "friendship" with a snowflake & what she ultimately learned about life because of it. The types of spiritual issues brought up in this book definitely follow Mr. Peck's previous adult books, therefore, it may not be right for everyone. Some of the types of "issues"/"lessons" that are discussed include: reincarnation, the underlying connection of us to each other & ultimately to all things, and choosing to find your own answers to lifes' mysteries. Overall, I found this to be a cute way to discuss such ideas with children. As such, I would highly recommend it for those who would like to begin teaching their children about such things as connection, reincarnation, and searching for their own answers. Questions welcome. JESUS (Based on the King James Version of the Holy Bible)
text & beautiful color illustrations by Demi. Condition: NEW 2005 Margaret McElderry Books over-sized hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first printing. Remainder mark. Content: [One of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I have seen.] Demi has used her considerable artistic talents in books about many great religious figures. Now, she turns her attention to Jesus, using as her text pieces from the four gospels, and lacing them into a touching narrative of life, death, and resurrection. Anyone familiar with children's books will immediately recognize Demi's style. All of the hallmarks of her art are here: striking design, diminutive figures, jewel-tone colors, intricate borders, and brilliant streaks of gold signifying holiness. Jesus is something of a disappointment--a blond, wispy Lord, whose strength comes from the golden rays that surround him and are emitted from him. But the scenes, each a small play of its own, are thoughtful and often moving. The text does not use the exact language of the King James Version of the New Testament, but the simplified presentation adds to the child appeal. Using the most vivid sections from the different gospels, Demi creates a brisk yet profound rendition of the greatest story ever told. Grades 4+. [1 copy available]

KING SOLOMON AND THE QUEEN OF SHEBA (Storytelling World Honor)
by Blu Greenberg & Linda Tarry. Color illustrations by Avi Katz. Condition: NEW 1997 Pitspopany Press large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), assuming first edition, but no edition given. Content: This version of the story has exciting original material - fresh new tales and riddles, an equal relationship, and a naturally multicultural, as well as slightly feminist, bias. Beginning like a fairy tale, it introduces the precocious African princess Makeda of Sheba, a child whose wisdom, fame as a riddler, and kindness prompts her elderly father to name her, rather than either of her brothers, his heir. And she becomes Queen. (This is the first time that the Queen of Sheba has been given a history, a family, and aggada [legends] of her own, or that she has been shown to be of the African race.) Meanwhile, "In a land far away" lives a wise Jewish King, named Solomon, who had also manifested great wisdom as a child. Inevitably, traders bring news of the other to their rulers. Queen Makeda accepts King Solomon's invitation to visit. The two quietly earn each other's respect and love while also discussing the other's country and religious beliefs. They marry; she conceives his child and returns to Sheba. When their son reaches the age of 13, he returns to his father. There the story ends, but the legend continues in an afterword that explains the prevailing desire of today's Ethiopian Jews to return to Jerusalem. While the writing is graceful and dignified, the art accomplished and charming with valid ethnic representation, and the book design elegant, the real importance of this title is its more accurate portrayal of the Queen of Sheba. THE LADY IN THE BLUE CLOAK: Legends from the Texas Missions
by Eric A. Kimmel. Beautiful soft color illustrations by Susan Guevara. Condition: NEW 2006 Holiday hardacover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Each of these six selections opens with a full-page illustration that captures the heart of its story. The gorgeous oil paintings are filled with light and religious imagery befitting the legends. In this picture book, Kimmel collects stories from the Texas missions that were built during Spain's colonial rule. In the title tale, a Spanish nun appears in realistic visions to a group of Tejas Indians; in "Rosa's Window," a Spanish artisan leaves his sweetheart behind to travel to Texas, where he will help build mission churches; and in "The Christmas Vine," a priest helps a young boy choose an offering for Jesus. The short stories flow easily, but they present a mostly uncritical picture of the Christian mission experience (bringing "these new Christians closer to God"), and the narrow viewpoint may jar readers seeking a more balanced portrayal of colonists and indigenous people. However, there are very few collections of these stories available for the age group, and the mysticism, faith, and magic--captured in reverential oil paintings bordered with angels, saints, and other religious imagery--will resonate with some children, particularly Catholics and Texans, for whom the symbolism and history may be more familiar. An introduction offers more background, and an afterword cites sources. Wonderful! [1 copy available.]

THE LIFE OF OUR LORD
by Charles Dickens. Color illustrations by Sally Holmes. Condition: Very good, gently pre-read 1987 Silver Burdett hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). Tiny edgewear to the DJ bottom edge. Content: Until 1934, when the last of Dickens' children died, this remained a private document, unpublished at the author's wish. It was written for his own children as a simple introduction to Jesus Christ. Always a rebel against religious pomposity and high-flown theology, Dickens intended his family to learn about the human Christ who served the poor, loved children, and lived a beautiful and blameless life. He seldom alludes to Christ's divinity. Since this is a father's personal statement and not a faithful version of Gospels and Acts, perhaps he can be forgiven the condescensions and discrepancies appearing in the manuscript. The format is handsome. Each page of text is framed with a decorative border. The full-page illustrations, done in warm soft colors, are crisp and solid. There are no references to specific New Testament sources. Foreward, afterward, facsimiles of pages from the manuscript, and several prayers of the Dickens family are also included.

THE LITTLE WING GIVER
text by Jacques Taravant. Translated from the French by Nina Ignatowicz. Lovely, soft pastel color illustrations by Peter Sis. Condition: NEW 1997 Barron's Juvenile kits, no printing given. Still shrink-wrapped. Content: Caldecott Honor artist Sis (Tibet Through the Red Box) provides fittingly wispy, ethereal art for this allegorical tale about the first angel. The late Taravant, a French diplomat, penned the lyrical story for his son (it first appeared posthumously in Le Monde). Long ago, when no creatures had wings, there lived a Little Wing Giver whose origins were unknown: "Perhaps he was born inside a flower one morning. Or perhaps he slid down to earth on a moonbeam one summer night. Or perhaps God had realized He'd forgotten to give out wings and sent the little boy to complete His creation." In full-page and vignette illustrations, Sis follows the cheerful youngster as he traverses the land, handing out wings to birds, bugs and butterflies, until "all the creatures you can think of had the wings they now have." One dramatic scene depicts the boy riding on a stork high above the ocean; another shows the climax, in which the lad lies down to rest and the jealous wind, whirling around the frame of the picture, hurls his wings in its wake. The hero performs one last act of kindness before falling into a deep slumber then his winged pals find a way to repay him. A penultimate view of the hero's ascension and the following scene featuring a parade of flying birds, rendered in soft pastel shades, close the volume on an uplifting note. This book can be a gentle touching-off point for parents and kids to discuss spirituality, selflessness, and even death. (Ages 4 to 8) Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

NOAH AND THE DEVIL: A Legend of Noah's Ark form Romania
retold by Neil Philip. Beautifully illustrated in color by Isabelle Brent. Condition: NEW 2001 Clarion Books hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket). first edition, first printing. Content: In this version of the familiar story, the Devil seizes the chance to board the ark when Noah impatiently exhorts his wife to hurry by calling, "Oh, you devil, come in!" Determined to sink the ship, the Devil, now in the form of a mouse, gnaws a hole in a plank. A cat catches the mouse, but the two land in the sea and the Devil escapes. As water rushes in, Noah makes a deal with a snake, which cuts off its tail to plug the hole in return for "a human being every day, for me and my children to eat." After the animals disembark, Noah realizes that if he fulfills his part of the bargain, humans will be extinct. So he throws the snake into the fire, and its scattered ashes turn to fleas. Those tiny creatures continue to get their daily quota of blood. Philip provides extensive source notes for various aspects of his tale. Done in watercolor and gold leaf, the art is similar in motif and design to Brent's illuminated Noah's Ark. Here, she has widened the borders and enlarged the inset paintings on the pages with text. This book will interest those searching for variants of the familiar Noah story, but even readers unfamiliar with Genesis can enjoy the twists and turns of this account. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. Ages 6 +. [1 copy available]

OLD TURTLE
by Douglas Wood. Beautiful, soft watercolors by Cheng-Khee Chee. Condition: UNREAD 2003 Scholastic softcover, .first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: When all of creation--trees, stones, ants, the sky, fish—-begins arguing over who or what God is, quiet Old Turtle is the only one who has the wisdom and ability to see beyond herself to capture the essence. The debate escalates until Old Turtle finally speaks: "STOP!" She accepts and incorporates the beliefs of all the creatures: "God is indeed deep," she says to the fish in the sea, "and much higher than high," she tells the mountains. "God is gentle and powerful. Above all things and within all things... God IS." Old Turtle, after silencing the crowds with her understanding, makes a prediction about the appearance of a new "family of beings" in the world. These beings, human beings, do appear, and soon are fighting among themselves over the nature of God. It is only when people start listening to the mountains and winds and stones and stars that they actually begin to hear--and to heal the earth. A graceful fable, with elegant, dreamlike watercolors by illustrator Cheng-Khee Chee, Douglas Wood's modern-day classic makes a hushed but strong environmental statement, as well as a plea for universal acceptance. ONE DAY IN PARADISE
retold by and illustrations by Helme Heine. Beautiful, soft color rt work. . Condition: UNREAD Ex-Library book but with all markings. Unread 191986 Margaret McElderry (Athennum) hardcover (library binding - pictorial boards), first American edition. Content: In this original interpretation of the biblical creation story, Heine casts God as a human male artist. Singlehandedly, he takes on the task of creating the universe, dons a white beard and white suit, and uses modern equipment and techniques. On the sixth day, he sits at his easel sketching human forms in his own image. Finally, he molds Adam and Eve, his boy and girl children, from clay; he gives them life, immortal souls and paradise as a gift, then watches over them like a proud father. Happy with his work, he rests. Heine handles the story with dignity and imagination, and the final spreads of the children playing in their lush tropical paradise are evocative. Reviewer: "I truly and deeply love this book. In just a few sentences, Helme Heine tells the Biblical story of Creation. But it is the illustrations that make it a treasure. His watercolors are gentle, peaceful images of jungles and plains, icebergs and waterfalls, and all the creatures of the earth. But best of all is his portrait of God as a creator with a Santa Claus-like beard, a gentle, intelligent face and mud all over his jacket from all his hard work. He's an artist, a sculptor, a gardener, a scientist, a tinkerer, and a thinker. My favorite picture in the book is of God gazing lovingly out his window at Adam and Eve (who look like they are four or five years old) as they play a game of chase. It is such a wonderful image of God I can't imagine any child not loving the image they find in this book. This is one of the very best Bible stories for children I have ever seen." PASCUAL AND THE KITCHEN ANGELS
text and color illustrations by Tomie DePaola. Condition: NEW 2006 Puffin soft cover, first printing. Content: DePaola brews up a delightful retelling of the life of the patron saint of cooks and the kitchen. On the day of Pascual's birth, angels sing in the trees, and his father realizes that "God must surely love him." Acrylic illustrations with soft pastel backgrounds show Pascual as a little boy, frolicking joyfully with animals and hanging garlands of flowers around the necks of sheep. The winsome paintings capture his serene spirituality as he and the creatures lift their voices toward heaven. Simple, well-chosen words reflect the youngster's sincere love for God and all of His creatures. When Pascual is older, he goes to the monastery of Saint Francis, hoping to become a friar and help the hungry. However, the friars ask him to make their meals. Knowing nothing about cooking, Pascual bows his head and prays. Suddenly, apron-wearing angelic visitors "swoosh in the air above him" and then descend to concoct a feast. Curious about the delicious meals coming from the kitchen, the friars spy on the dinner preparations and learn the truth. Realizing how much God values him, they decide to take a joyful Pascual with them to feed the hungry. Framed by light peach watercolors splashed with rainbow-colored droplets, the illustrations beautifully complement the celestial mood. An author's note provides some background about this humble man. Grades 1 - 4. [1 copy available]

SAINTS AMONG THE ANIMALS
by Cynthia Zarin. Wonderful B&W charcoal illustrations by Leonid Gore. Condition: NEW 2006 Richard Jackson hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Zarin, captivated by a 1905 book entitled Saints among the Animals, used that book and others as the basis for these stories of 10 saints, most living in the Dark Ages, and their often miraculous relationship with animals. The most famous is Saint Francis and the oft-told tale of how he dealt with the wolf of Gubbio. There are also stories of Saint Werburge, an English abbess who takes on troublesome geese; Saint Kenneth, a misshapen young man saved by birds; and Saint Hilda, who tames an infestation of snakes. Like many stories of saints, these tales contain elements that are not particularly child-friendly. For instance, the story of Saint Colman turns on the fact that the popular monk is a happy man, but to properly serve the Lord, he must live in isolation. Still, readers drawn to these tales will probably accept their quirks. The tales are neatly told, and the book's effective format--tall, with handsome charcoal artwork--is a pleasure to hold in hand. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Paul Gallico's THE SMALL MIRACLE
retold by Bob Barton. Lovely soft color illustrations by Carolyn Croll. Condition: NEW 2003 Henry Holt hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. Content: Retold in simple sentences, this is the story of a young Italian orphan whose faith is rewarded. When Pepino's beloved donkey falls ill, the boy must travel from his home in Assisi to Rome in order to ask the Pope for special permission to bring the animal into the crypt of Saint Francis, with the hope that she will be cured. The original tale has more detailed, descriptive language and a more deeply layered plot. Still, this abridged version succeeds in a quiet way since the journey of faith remains. Done in watercolors and colored pencils, Croll's illustrations nicely convey the emotions of the characters and the events they experience. The colors are soft and details well chosen. Some pictures are full page, while others are sectioned into four panels, making for effective visual variety. Ages 6+. [1 copy available]

THE TRELLIS AND THE SEED: A Book of Encouragement for All Ages
by Jan Karon. Beautiful soft & warm color paintings by Robert Gantt Steele. Condition: NEW 2003 Viking Juvenile hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first ediiton, first printing. Content: Subtitled a "Story of Encouragement for All Ages," this book tells the story of how "God has planned something beautiful" for even the tiniest, most unassuming little seed. The tiny seed begins its mysterious journey in the hands of the seemingly omnipotent "Nice Lady," who predicts -- much to the seed's disbelief -- that it will make a "beautiful vine with sweet-smelling blossoms." Even as the Nice Lady plants the seed, erects an ambitious trellis, waits for rain, adds fertilizer, and performs all her other nurserial oblations, the seed continues to be baffled by its caretaker's faith. ("It was only a seed, and very, very small. How could it ever be a beautiful vine with blossoms?") How indeed? Suffice it to say, God doesn't send a crafty bird to eat the seed in a harrowing third-act changeup. Jan Karon's story of patience and faith shows the same folksy charm that infuses her Mitford Years series, and her gentle words find a soothing complement in the skilled, muted watercolors of Robert Gantt Steele Dog-loving children will appreciate the presence of an adorable West Highland White Terrier - well, I do anyway.
