THE ADVENTURES OF MARTIN LUTHER
by Carolyn Bergt. Great color illustrations (historically accurate) by Art Kirchhoff. Condition: NEW 1999 CPH soft cover (stapled wraps), first printing. Tiny edge wear to front cover fore edge - very tiny. Content: Reviewer: "When I searched for children's books on Martin Luther, I found only two. This book "The Adventures of Martin Luther" and "Martin Luther A Man Who Changed the World" by Paul L. Maier. Both books have their place. "The Adventures of Martin Luther" is by far the better option if you have a very young audience. It is written in rhyme with no more than two stanzas per page. The pictures are colorful and kid friendly, yet still fairly realistic. It is short enough that my preschooler can sit through it, but long enough to convey a general sense of who Martin Luther was and what he accomplished. My biggest complaint about the book is that some episodes in Luther's story were abbreviated so much that they no longer make sense...especially to a reader unfamiliar with the general story of Luther's life. We plan to use this book with our K-3rd grade Sunday School kids this fall in preparation for Reformation Day. I think the book will be quite suitable for this age group" Ages 4-8. [1 copy available]

AND GOD CREATED SQUASH: How The World Began
by Martha Whitmore Hickman. Great color illustrations by Giuliano Ferri. Condition: UNREAD, but lightly perused on the shelf, 1994 Whitman soft covr, second printing. Pale short diagonal crease bottom front cover corner. Interior clean & tight. Content: In this quietly amusing interpolation of the creation story, a childlike, mirthful God in a halcyon Garden of Eden talks himself into a magnificent world. With impish eyes surrounded by a fuzzy cloud of beard and hair, his enraptured thoughts turn, one by one, into things. Then, a peculiar infatuation, borrowed from other creation traditions, captures him: squash. "I like that name . . . I think I'll use it again. Acorn squash. Butternut squash. Even zucchini squash. I might have a game and call it squash. Or put my hand on something and press down hard and call that squash." Saving the best for last, God ends by fashioning some company for himself--something, "well, more like me." While some underwhelmed adults may not tune in to the fun of this rendition, children will delight in the endless naming of species and guess-what-comes-next descriptions. Glowing as if floodlit, Ferri's soft, sunny watercolor and colored pencil illustrations embody the utter beneficence, if not the omnipotence, of a God children may accept as their friend. [Note: While this has been called "whimsical," many people might find it a bit irreverent. I like it, but . . .you might not.] Ages 4-8. [1 copy available]

THE BOOK OF CREATION
by Georges Lemoine. Lovely soft color illustrations by Pierre-Marie Beaude. Condition: Gently prread, IF at all, 1992 Picture Book Studio hardcover (pictorial boards), first thus, first printing. The book has been perused on the shelf and it appears the first 8 pages may have been read. DJ shows light edge wear with a small "repaired" tear to the bottom back flap corner. Content: In the desert of the Holy Land, 2500 years ago, a father begins to tell his preadolescent son "what happened on the first morning of the world." His account focuses on the content and the context of creation, and on its timeless significance, rather than echoing the words of the Bible. Certain themes--like human stewardship of the earth--speak especially to us, but seem also to belong to a subsistence culture of desert nomads. Lemoine's watercolors--pure, linear, minimal, but with touches of expressionistic color--also combine the "primitive" and the contemporary. The text depends on Genesis A, omitting the B version's Eden, serpent, sin, and expulsion. Its sole borrowing from B is the creation of woman from man's rib instead of her co-creation, from clay, with man, and some readers may not feel that B's version "means that woman is the equal of man." The author has gracefully incorporated some ideas from midrashic commentaries, and the expanded story is fresh and at times poetic. It is also rather long, with a sophisticated vocabulary and concepts. Ages 10+. Excellent for Sunday School teachers. [1 copy available]

BRIGID'S CLOAK: An Ancient Irish Story
by Bryce Milligan. Beautifully illustrated by Helen Cann. Condition: NEW 2002 Eerdmans hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Tiny edge wear to DJ top edge. Content: Milligan's folktale-flavored telling, which incorporates elements of Druidic and early Christian beliefs, introduces Brigid, one of Ireland's favorite saints, in a story that reveals the origin of her reputation for generosity. Borders of Celtic designs frame Cann's mixed-media pictures and add both authenticity and wonder to the tale, which begins with her birth and goes on to tell of a vision in which she is transplanted to Jerusalem at the time of Jesus' birth, welcomes Mary and Joseph, and helps care for the newborn baby Jesus. A full-page close-up of a Druid wizard holding the infant Brigid, wrapped in the blue cloak he gave her, is particularly impressive; his light-green eyes exude wisdom as his white hair flows around his face. Just as good is the portrait of the Holy Family, with Brigid in their midst, which evokes the peace and happiness Brigid feels at Mary's kind words, "Thank you, child of the West. Your generosity will be remembered always." An author's note explains more about Brigid and the stories surrounding her cloak. Grades 1 - 4. [1 copy left]

BROTHER WOLF, SISTER SPARROW: Stories About Saints and Animals
retold by Eric A. Kimmel. Delightful color illustrations by John Winch. Condition: NEW 2002 Holiday House hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, no printing. Content: Kimmel provides glimpses at the lives of 12 saints, each of whom has been linked to an animal in some way. In short expository essays, no more than three pages each, he presents the legends and gives the chronological and geographical context for each individual. His superb storytelling allows readers to come away with a clear sense of why these people are honored above others. Mention is made of the saints' feast days, their emblems and their meanings, and the particular groups over which they are considered patrons. Kimmel recounts how Francis of Assisi brokered a bargain between a menacing wolf and the community that agreed to feed it meat in exchange for peace. In another story, angels assist Ireland's Saint Brigid when her father demands that she replace the milk and butter that she has already given away to the poor. Winch's dramatic, full-page paintings are filled with deep colors and images that highlight each saint's identity and significance. An author's note describes the process of canonization. For collections where saints are important, this is a rich treasure, but it could bring understanding and tolerance of differing traditions to any reader. There are many lessons here on the kind treatment of animals. Grades 2 - 4 and great for read aloud to younger children. [2 copies left]

THE CHRISTMAS SKY
by Franklyn M. Branley. Beautiful warm color illustrations by Stephen Fieser. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1990 Thomas Crowell hardcover & DJ (in mylar jackaet), revised & newly illustrated, first printing. DJ has been price-clipped. Blank bookplate loose end page. Content: This is a remarkable book for kids! An astronomical exploration of the Star of Bethlehem against a background of the Christmas story. A newly illustrated version of a 1966 title that is a fascinating example of the scientific mind at work. Branley asks what might have caused the star the Wise Men followed to appear in the heavens. He discusses theories and rules out by evidence shooting stars, (too short a duration) comets, and novas (none visible around the time of Jesus' birth). Branley then deduces the year and season of Jesus' birth through a series of old tax records, facts of Herod's rule and death, and the times when desert people grazed sheep. Fieser's use of rich colors and rounded shapes give the illustrations a substantial firmness and authority that suit the narrative perfectly. This book is not only seasonally remarkable, but pictures and text glow in this carefully reasoned and fully probable explanation of a phenomenon once observed. AGes 9 - 12. [1 copy available]

Content: Reviewer: "Dickinson has written a wonderful little book which takes a look at over thirty Old Testament stories or characters as seen through different eyes. A particular favorite of mine is a Babylonian drill sergeant using the David and Goliath story to tell young recruits how do deal with the threats posed by a slingshot to an armored infantryman. All of the stories take a different viewpoint than is used in the Bible and cast new light on the characters and situations. Quite enjoyable." Questions welcome [1 copy available]

CONFUCIUS: The Golden Rule
by Russell Freedman (Newbery Medal Winner). Color illustrations by Frederic Clement. Condition: UNREAD 2002 Arthur A. Levine Books (Scholastic) hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. PROBLEM: Top book & DJ spine are damaged - most likely in shipping - DJ has been "repaired" but the book cannot be repaired. The interior is perfect with beautiful illustrations. Content: This is an intelligent, comprehensive biography of the 5th-century B.C. philosopher Confucius, whose teachings have influenced the development of modern government and education in both China and the West. Freedman draws on stories, legends and collected dialogues from The Analects of Confucius, written by his students, to reveal a man of deep perceptions as well as great humor. Clement's moody, ethereal illustrations complement the thoughtful text yet play up the mystery of Confucius's life. Like worn pages ripped from an ancient tome, the rubbed, faded images strewn with photorealistic fruits, petals and berries plunge readers into otherworldly scenes. For today's students, this portrait is a comprehensible introduction to Eastern thought. Just as Confucius "prodded [his students] to think in new ways," it will open new doors for young readers. Ages 8-12. Questions welcome.

THE FRIENDLY SNOWFLAKE: A Fable of Faith, Love and Family
by M. Scott Peck, M.D. Wonderfully sweet color illustrtions by Christopher Scott Peck. Condition: Gently pre-read, IF at all, 1992 Turner Publishing hardcover (pictorial boards) and DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first pritning. Content: Reviewer: "This book is an adorable story about a young girls "friendship" with a snowflake & what she ultimately learned about life because of it. The types of spiritual issues brought up in this book definitely follow Mr. Peck's previous adult books, therefore, it may not be right for everyone. Some of the types of "issues"/"lessons" that are discussed include: reincarnation, the underlying connection of us to each other & ultimately to all things, and choosing to find your own answers to lifes' mysteries. Overall, I found this to be a cute way to discuss such ideas with children. As such, I would highly recommend it for those who would like to begin teaching their children about such things as connection, reincarnation, and searching for their own answers. Questions welcome. GRANDAD'S PRAYERS OF THE EARTH (Christopher Award)
by Douglas Wood. Lovely, soft color illustrations by P.J. Lynch. Condition: UNREAD c. 2001 Candlewick hardcover (decorated boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), 4th printing. DJ shows tiny edge wear. Interior perfect. 3 small tag removal marks bottom back DJ panel. Content: In spectacular double-page outdoor scenes shown from a variety of perspectives, a young boy and his grandfather wander along woodsy lanes, gaze up at towering pines, teeter across a rushing stream, and dream by a lake lit with sunset glow. These beautiful, meditative, realistic watercolors of nature in all seasons are interspersed with close-ups of the two as they talk about prayer. Grandad explains that all earthly beings pray: trees in reaching for heaven, rocks by being still and silent, streams while splashing and flowing, flowers by releasing their fragrance, birds in song, and so on. Human beings pray in many ways, he says, and all of the prayers are valid as long as they are true and heartfelt. When Grandad dies, the boy's prayers, no matter how fervent, can not bring him back. Consequently, he rejects the practice for some time, but eventually turns again to the natural world and begins to hear the prayers of trees, breezes, birds, and waters, just as his grandfather had said he would. The boy, now a teenager, then gives thanks for his grandfather's life, feeling that he is close and the world seems right again. Without mentioning any specific God or belief, the thoughtful text celebrates all creation and is perfectly complemented by the moving, expressive illustrations. Grades 1 - 3. [1 copy available]

Kids are encouraged to understand personal feelings and social problems as a first step in dealing with them. Written by psychotherapist and counselor Pat Thomas, these books promote positive interaction among children, parents, and teachers. The story lines are simple and direct--easily accessible to younger children. There are full-color illustrations on every page. JESUS (Based on the King James Version of the Holy Bible)
text & beautiful color illustrations by Demi. Condition: NEW 2005 Margaret McElderry Books over-sized hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first printing. Remainder mark. Content: [One of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I have seen.] Demi has used her considerable artistic talents in books about many great religious figures. Now, she turns her attention to Jesus, using as her text pieces from the four gospels, and lacing them into a touching narrative of life, death, and resurrection. Anyone familiar with children's books will immediately recognize Demi's style. All of the hallmarks of her art are here: striking design, diminutive figures, jewel-tone colors, intricate borders, and brilliant streaks of gold signifying holiness. Jesus is something of a disappointment--a blond, wispy Lord, whose strength comes from the golden rays that surround him and are emitted from him. But the scenes, each a small play of its own, are thoughtful and often moving. The text does not use the exact language of the King James Version of the New Testament, but the simplified presentation adds to the child appeal. Using the most vivid sections from the different gospels, Demi creates a brisk yet profound rendition of the greatest story ever told. Grades 4+. [1 copy available]

JOSEPH'S STORY: The Birth of Jesus
by Patricia A. Pingry. Beautiful color paintings by George Hinke. Condition: NEW c. 2000 CandyCane Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Content: A traditional version of the story of Jesus's birth from the point of view of Joseph, the man who "provided the earthly needs for the Baby and His mother." Told in dialogue with a you-are-there insight into Joseph's motivation, the story introduces a gentle man who, though visited frequently by angels who advise him about where to go and what to do, is just trying to supply the best shelter and care for his pregnant wife. Shepherds and kings admire the baby before Joseph takes his family to safety in Egypt where they live for several years until it is safe to return to Nazareth. The illustrations, done before the artist's death in 1953, have the quality of children's illustrated Bibles of that period. Glowing and idealized oil paintings portray a very traditional view of the people and places. [1 copy available]

KING SOLOMON AND THE QUEEN OF SHEBA (Storytelling World Honor)
by Blu Greenberg & Linda Tarry. Color illustrations by Avi Katz. Condition: NEW 1997 Pitspopany Press large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), assuming first edition, but no edition given. Content: This version of the story has exciting original material - fresh new tales and riddles, an equal relationship, and a naturally multicultural, as well as slightly feminist, bias. Beginning like a fairy tale, it introduces the precocious African princess Makeda of Sheba, a child whose wisdom, fame as a riddler, and kindness prompts her elderly father to name her, rather than either of her brothers, his heir. And she becomes Queen. (This is the first time that the Queen of Sheba has been given a history, a family, and aggada [legends] of her own, or that she has been shown to be of the African race.) Meanwhile, "In a land far away" lives a wise Jewish King, named Solomon, who had also manifested great wisdom as a child. Inevitably, traders bring news of the other to their rulers. Queen Makeda accepts King Solomon's invitation to visit. The two quietly earn each other's respect and love while also discussing the other's country and religious beliefs. They marry; she conceives his child and returns to Sheba. When their son reaches the age of 13, he returns to his father. There the story ends, but the legend continues in an afterword that explains the prevailing desire of today's Ethiopian Jews to return to Jerusalem. While the writing is graceful and dignified, the art accomplished and charming with valid ethnic representation, and the book design elegant, the real importance of this title is its more accurate portrayal of the Queen of Sheba. KINGS AND QUEENS OF THE BIBLE
by Mary Hoffman. Bright color illustrations by Christina Balit. Condition: NEW 2008 Henry Holt hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Seven Old Testament tales featuring kings and queens are retold here, representing the cruel (such as Pharaoh and Jezebel) and the kind (such as Solomon and Esther). While the plotlines have been simplified and the telling is clear, some familiarity with the original stories will aid understanding. Readers will be reminded that the Bible can be filled with romance, violence, and death. The offerings do not combine into a single coherent narrative, but do evoke common themes of wealth, wisdom, prophecy, and power. An introduction provides a contextual overview, and endnotes refer to the biblical sources for each selection. The author describes the tales as coming from the "Old Testament," rather than the "Hebrew Bible," revealing a Christian point of view. The flowing, jewel-toned, stylized illustrations appear to support a Eurocentric perspective: each beautiful picture depicts the Middle Eastern and African characters with pale skin and blue-green eyes. This quibble aside, the illustrations do succeed in creating a fairy-tale atmosphere that supports the text's focus on royalty. This is an attractive volume. However, it should be noted that while "adult" material has been expunged from the stories, the violence remains. If, for example, Queen Jezebel being eaten by dogs will upset your young readers, use with caution. [1 copy available]

THE LADY IN THE BLUE CLOAK: Legends from the Texas Missions
by Eric A. Kimmel. Beautiful soft color illustrations by Susan Guevara. Condition: NEW 2006 Holiday hardacover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Each of these six selections opens with a full-page illustration that captures the heart of its story. The gorgeous oil paintings are filled with light and religious imagery befitting the legends. In this picture book, Kimmel collects stories from the Texas missions that were built during Spain's colonial rule. In the title tale, a Spanish nun appears in realistic visions to a group of Tejas Indians; in "Rosa's Window," a Spanish artisan leaves his sweetheart behind to travel to Texas, where he will help build mission churches; and in "The Christmas Vine," a priest helps a young boy choose an offering for Jesus. The short stories flow easily, but they present a mostly uncritical picture of the Christian mission experience (bringing "these new Christians closer to God"), and the narrow viewpoint may jar readers seeking a more balanced portrayal of colonists and indigenous people. However, there are very few collections of these stories available for the age group, and the mysticism, faith, and magic--captured in reverential oil paintings bordered with angels, saints, and other religious imagery--will resonate with some children, particularly Catholics and Texans, for whom the symbolism and history may be more familiar. An introduction offers more background, and an afterword cites sources. Wonderful! [3 copies available.]

THE LIFE OF OUR LORD
by Charles Dickens. Color illustrations by Sally Holmes. Condition: Very good, gently pre-read 1987 Silver Burdett hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). Tiny edgewear to the DJ bottom edge. Content: Until 1934, when the last of Dickens' children died, this remained a private document, unpublished at the author's wish. It was written for his own children as a simple introduction to Jesus Christ. Always a rebel against religious pomposity and high-flown theology, Dickens intended his family to learn about the human Christ who served the poor, loved children, and lived a beautiful and blameless life. He seldom alludes to Christ's divinity. Since this is a father's personal statement and not a faithful version of Gospels and Acts, perhaps he can be forgiven the condescensions and discrepancies appearing in the manuscript. The format is handsome. Each page of text is framed with a decorative border. The full-page illustrations, done in warm soft colors, are crisp and solid. There are no references to specific New Testament sources. Foreward, afterward, facsimiles of pages from the manuscript, and several prayers of the Dickens family are also included.

LIFETIMES: The beautiful way to explain death to children
by Bryan Mellonie and Robert Ingpen. Beautiful color illustrations by Ingpen. Condition: NEW 1983 Bantam soft cover edition, 25th printing. Easy-to-read with larger print for young eyes. Content: A pet . . . a friend . . . or a relative dies, and it must be explained to a child. This sensitive book is a useful tool in explaining to children that death is a part of life and that, eventually, all living things reach the end of their own special lifetimes. Reviewer: "The "de-personalized" way it talks about death, the universality of its text combined with soft drawings and repetition are very soothing. This is NOT a book about emotions or stages of death. This is a book about the rhythm of life and death for all creatures, for everything that is born. One of the best parts of the book is its emphasis on what a lifetime is, and how it is framed by birth and death, and that inbetween those "markers" is what is important. It explains that different creatures have different life spans, and that this aspect of nature is neither fair nor unfair. It simply is." Preschool and up. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE LITTLE WING GIVER
text by Jacques Taravant. Translated from the French by Nina Ignatowicz. Lovely, soft pastel color illustrations by Peter Sis. Condition: NEW 1997 Barron's Juvenile kits, no printing given. Still shrink-wrapped. Content: Caldecott Honor artist Sis (Tibet Through the Red Box) provides fittingly wispy, ethereal art for this allegorical tale about the first angel. The late Taravant, a French diplomat, penned the lyrical story for his son (it first appeared posthumously in Le Monde). Long ago, when no creatures had wings, there lived a Little Wing Giver whose origins were unknown: "Perhaps he was born inside a flower one morning. Or perhaps he slid down to earth on a moonbeam one summer night. Or perhaps God had realized He'd forgotten to give out wings and sent the little boy to complete His creation." In full-page and vignette illustrations, Sis follows the cheerful youngster as he traverses the land, handing out wings to birds, bugs and butterflies, until "all the creatures you can think of had the wings they now have." One dramatic scene depicts the boy riding on a stork high above the ocean; another shows the climax, in which the lad lies down to rest and the jealous wind, whirling around the frame of the picture, hurls his wings in its wake. The hero performs one last act of kindness before falling into a deep slumber then his winged pals find a way to repay him. A penultimate view of the hero's ascension and the following scene featuring a parade of flying birds, rendered in soft pastel shades, close the volume on an uplifting note. This book can be a gentle touching-off point for parents and kids to discuss spirituality, selflessness, and even death. (Ages 4 to 8) Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
