THE BEWITCHING OF ANNE GUNTER: A horrible and true story of deception, witchcraft, murder and the King of England
by James Sharpe. Condition: UNREAD 2000 Routledge hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacaket), first printing. Content: British historian Sharpe's meticulously detailed reconstruction of a sensational English witchcraft case resonates with the modern era and throws a floodlight on the psychology of fear, gullibility, scapegoating, conformity and self-delusion. In 1604, 20-year-old Anne Gunter, during fits and trances in which she writhed, seemed to vomit and void such foreign objects as pins, accused three local women of bewitching her. Anne's supposed tormentors went on trial for witchcraft in 1605 (and were eventually acquitted). The trial was a dramatic affair, with Anne running through her repertoire of fits and symptoms, lying prostrate on the courtroom floor. Then Anne came under the personal scrutiny of notorious witch-hunter King James I, the king's physicians and Archbishop of Canterbury Richard Bancroft. She confessed that, under pressure from her father, gentry farmer Brian Gunter, she had faked her bewitchment to further his feud with the family of one of the accused witches, Elizabeth Gregory--a feud that began in 1598 at a football match. In 1606, father and daughter went on trial for false accusations of witchcraft before the infamous Star Chamber; regrettably, the disposition of the case is unknown. Sharpe views Anne's charade as a desperate attempt by an unloved, coerced child to gain her father's attention. His absorbing study is crammed with lore about demonic possession and the politics of exorcism, the European witch persecution craze, the bubonic plague of 1603 (which killed off one-fifth of London's population), demonological literature, Oxford (still a walled medieval city in 1600), daily life in English villages and the haphazard free-for-all of the early English criminal justice system. CANDLEMAS: Feast of Flames (Brigit's Festival of Light & Life)
by Amber K ^ Azrael Arynn K. Cover art by Hrana Janto. Interior illustrations by Carrie Westfall. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Llewellyn soft cover, first printing. Light turn-up front cover fore edge. Interior perfect. Content: Reviewer: "There is very little padding here. February festivals from various cultures are reviewed, and the information given is well researched and accurate. Many of the customs and folkways described cry out for adoption into one's own seasonal routine. There is an enormous amount of material of the Celtic goddess Brigid (pronounced Bree-id), later identified with a 5th-century Irish saint, a rough contemprorary of St. Patrick. After reading the material collected here, the goddess comes alive as something much more than a symbol of smithcraft, poetry, and healing. She emerges as a powerful personality, central to the land, its people, and their identity. The cross-quarter days are all associated with divination magick, and this book offers some fine, original suggestions suited to the season. I particularly appreciated the instructions for scrying with fire. This is such a primal magickal operation, accessible to human beings thousands of generations before the first tarot card saw the light of day. The ritual suggestions (for solitaries, families, and groups) are thorough and carefully thought out, and will carry significant personal meaning when performed. There is, naturally, a section on candle-making and candle magick, which gets into the details of traditional methods and materials, not often encountered in other books. The table of correspondences for candle magick also displays the authors' characteristic attention to detail and thoroughness. The book winds down with a fascinating selection of recipes appropriate to the ancient and medieval Irish roots of the Imbolc festival. The practice in other books in this series has been to feature mostly "fun" recipes that somehow carry out the theme of the holiday, in color, decoration, or sometimes just name. There's a place for this, but it was a delight to open this book and find something more-an attempt to make some kind of connection with the original people for whom this festival was an important milestone in the passage through winter. THE DEVIL IN MASSACHUSETTS: A Modern Enquiry into the Salem Witch Trials
by Marion L. Starkey. Condition: 1969 Anchor paperback reprint of the original 1949 edition. Pale spine crease with light tanning to white cover edges. Interior clean & tight. Content: Interesting presentation - historical narrative is a bit tough on categorization. "This historical narrative of the Salem witch trials takes its dialogue from actual trial records but applies modern psychiatric knowledge to the witchcraft hysteria. Starkey's sense of drama also vividly recreates the atmosphere of pity and terror that fostered the evil and suffering of this human tragedy." Very good basics here. [1 copy available]

HISTORY OF WITCHCRAFT
by Montague Summers. Condition: Good+, UNREAD 1994 Senate (UK) Trade Paperback, reprint. Problems: 2 diagonal creases front cover corners. Interior clean & tight but tanning to edges. Content: Reviewer: "This is a lengthy and exhaustive history of witchcraft and the occult written by the eccentric occult historian Montague Summers in 1927. Summers was well known for his many books on witchcraft, vampires, werewolves, and the history of the occult in general. He was generally considered The Expert on the history of witchcraft in the early 20th century and was filled with little-known anecdotal tales of witches, warlocks and dark devilish conspiracies as is evidenced by the many long dry examples in this book. This work is, however, a thorough reference on a arcane subject and is valuable for its many historical accounts of witch trials and other tales of witches, devils, and their arts. Summers is often criticized for his lack of skepticism, as noted below, as well as the heaps of praise he showers on the works of the Inquisition and its supposed war on witchcraft during the height of witch hysteria. His translations of notorious books like the Malleus Maleficarum and the Compendium Maleficarum, both witch hunting manuals used for centuries to detect, judge, and execute suspected witches, are his best-knwn works. Summers appears to revel in the age-old war against witches and often seemed a man born into the wrong time. He seems to wax nostalgic on the "Burning Times" and its blatant mysoginistic undertones, and this was in our "modern" age. In fact, he seems almost like a magistrate plucked from a 17th century witch burning and transplanted into the 20th century to write about his esteemed accomplishments! Yet, all this comes from a man who went to great lengths to transcribe and republish Reginald Scots' "Discoverie of Witchcraft", a 16th century treatise DISCOUNTING the existence of witches and demons and which was banned by the Holy Office and ordered burned by King James I of England! Very interesting stuff indeed." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

NOCTURNAL WITCHCRAFT: Magick After Dark
by Konstantinos. B&W drawings & decorations. Condition: NEW 2002 Llwellyn Worldwide Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: "When the essence of the shadows and darkness empowers you, yet you don't feel evil, you are good-dark," writes Konstantinos, as he calls believers to the practice of Nocturnal Witchcraft. Konstantinos writes for people primarily within the Wiccan tradition who feel at home with the night and lunar energies. He reiterates throughout this manual, however, that to draw one's strength from the energies of the night is not at all the same as intending to do dark deeds. In fact, this guidebook might be regarded as a fundamental Wiccan primer save for the fact that Konstantinos turns to night-based rituals and primarily, but not exclusively, to the pagan pantheons of Egypt, Greece and Sumeria to harness good human desires to the yoke of such deities as Hypnos (Night Personified), Pasht (Dark Moon), Nanna (Full Moon), Kali (Protection), Persephone (Descent and Rebirth) and Annubis (Underworld and Death). His ceremonial instructions are clearly described, but the book's chief flaw is that readers must recognize themselves as "good-dark." They are imprecisely beckoned with not much more to go on than "Do you dress in black? Favor silver jewelry? Does being surrounded by the shadows, by the essence of the night, appeal to you?" For those readers self-identified with the night whatever that means his text may offer just the words they have been waiting for; others will find it as obscure as its subject matter. THE PRACTICE OF WITCHCRAFT TODAY: An Introduction to Beliefs and Rituals
by Robin Skelton. Condition: NEW 1994 Citadel Press Trade Paperback, fourth printing. Content: Reviewer: "Skelton's book is subtitled "An introduction to beliefs and rituals." As such, it's a bit of a misnomer. While the first third of the book is in a Q&A format that would be suitable - and informative - for the introduction of a neophyte to Wicca, Paganism, or Witchcraft, the second two parts of the book are anything but introductory. Part two, made up of rituals and cellebrations, cover not just the most often seen Dedications, Esbats and Sabbats that make up an introductory experience, but holy rits for so many other holy days that I'd never come across before. The Witch's calendar that Skelton has put together is the most detailed I've yet to come across, and would totally overwhelm the beginner. Part three is Skelton's "Workbook," which is quite advanced. Spell theory on such varied topics as Love Spells (of which I personally debate the ethics), Healing Rituals, Blessings, Banishments, and Talismans, among other things, is set in this third part of the book. The discussion is of a major depth, and at times would be very much over the head of a beginner." Questions welcome. [2 copies available]

SONS OF THE GODDESS: A Young Man's Guide to Wicca
by Christopher Penczak. B&W photos, drawings & charts illustrate. Condition: NEW 2005 Llewellyn Worldwide large soft cover, first printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: As women search for feminine inspiration in male-dominated religions, so Penczak seeks a place for men in Wicca, a largely female-centered tradition. Penczak, a practitioner of the craft and author of many books about Wicca and magick, explores masculine images, wisdom and practices within witchcraft to help men walk the "path toward empowerment as a son of the Goddess." Readers interested in the masculine side of Wicca will enjoy not only a succinct cataloguing of gods and male ritual but also general rituals and spells associated with witchcraft (including an intriguing spell for binding bullies) and a detailed code of Wiccan ethics. Each chapter includes helpful sidebars that detail everything from the devil to the story of the god Horus, as well as a series of practical exercises, reflections and guided meditations designed to help the reader explore and develop his identity as a witch (the term Penczak prefers to warlock or wizard). Penczak draws from his personal journey of finding Wicca to shape his discussion, sometimes successfully, and at other times reveals biases (in particular about feminism) that may be off-putting to women readers. For men already interested in Wicca, yet who associate witchcraft exclusively with women, Penczak offers answers and a new angle for men to embrace the masculine side of this tradition. It also explains about the various sects of wicca and how rituals and wording may differ from one coven to another. The book describes the garments and tools that are used in rituals. The book made me see why wicca appeals to so many people. It's very compatible with environmentalism and certain spiritual and belief systems, including animal rights. [1 copy available]

WICCA FOR COUPLES: Making Magick Together
by A. J. Drew. Condition: NEW 2002 New Page Books Trade Paperback, no printing given. Content: In a world where Wicca is something one does as a solitary or with his or her coven, this book demonstrates how Wicca is something one experiences with kith and kin. It focuses on a modern context for pre-Christian fertility religions and examines such issues as Archetype vs. Stereotype, Real Ritual vs. Real Life, Clergy vs. Guru, and as its title implies Couple vs. Coven. In so doing, this book gives us the foundation for rethinking the focus of our involvement with this religion in the context of our own deeply felt needs and desires. The book focuses on a Wicca where the structure is founded on the natural bonding of a couple. It includes rituals for Hand Fasting, Wiccaning, and Hand Parting with a discussion of how these sacred rituals have been almost trivialized in Wiccan culture and what steps we can take to return their sanctity. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE WICCAN MYSTERIES: Ancient Origins & Teachings
by Raven Grimassi. B&W illustrations. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Llewellyn Trade Paperback, 4th printing. Content: Grimassi searches out Pagan origins and traces them back to the Old Religion of Europe. The book begins with an actual tracing of the Wiccan Mysteries from Celtic Britain, back to ancient Gaul, to the Romans, the Etruscans, the Greeks, to the ancient Minoans, and finally to the far south of Europe. It was here, during the Neolithic Period of Old Europe where Wicca had it religious origins. The book analyzes, in-depth, the Old Ways from a variety of different angles, looking into basic principles and beliefs, sacred texts, Wiccan deities, the Watchers, cycles of rebirth, planes of existence, psychic centers, magical arts, rites, the Celts, Mystery traditions, and more. Often Grimassi shows us the Neo-Wiccan belief or practice alongside the Old belief or practice and carefully analyzes the similarities and changes and possible reasons for them. Questions welcome. WITCHCRAFT: Theory and Practice (Rituals, Spellcasting, & Sorcery)
by Ly de Angeles. B&W decorations illustrate. Condition: NEW 2004 Llewellyn Worldwide Trade Paperback, 9th printing. Content: The "thinking-prson's" guide to Witchcraft. Reviewer: This book is actually an expanded version of a book the author wrote as a primer over a decade ago. The author stresses the seriousnes of comitting oneself to the Old Religion in a way that makes you understand that this is not a game. There is an entire section devoted to self exploration, including a Book of Elements to help you find an order in those sometimes chaotic personality traits. The work serves as a caveat that the first step taken on the Path is one you can never take back. The first section of the book focuses on fundamentals: self exploration, meditation and visualisation skills, and basic grounding in the thought process of an occultist and Witch. Section two is ritual and religious instruction, and the third part is a collection of unique spells. Kabbalah informs much of the work, although I'm certain many Kabbalists would object to the author's interpretation. There is a series of guided journeys designed to open up understanding of the Spheres for the reader. Finally, the most impressive aspect of this book is its poetic nature. Angeles clearly has the soul of a poet in her, which is far more important, in my opinion, than endless lists of tools and correspondences. Her language drips with imagery, and takes the reader into the realm of the Witch the way few books do. Questions welcome [1 copy available]

WITCHCRAZE: A New History of the European Witch Hunts
by Anne Llewellyn Barstow. B&W photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD 1993 Pandora Trade Paperback, firt printing. Light tanning to page edges. Beautiful wrap-around color cover but no credit given. Content: A definitive portrait of the witch-hunts that terrorized European women during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Though the persecution, torture, and execution of more than seven million women suspected of being witches during this period has been documented in other historical sources, Barstow is the first scholar to offer a convincing gender analysis of the Reformation-era witch craze. According to Barstow, independent and intelligent women often proved to be convenient targets for misogynists seeking scapegoats for every conceivable social ill. Most interesting is the author's credible assertion that the witch-hunts not only paralleled the emergence of a more patriarchal society, but also heralded the disturbing decline in the status of women that continued over the course of the next several centuries. A fascinating historical treatise that provides an evolutionary context for the contemporary proliferation and escalation of violence toward women. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
