THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES
by Judith Swaddling. Great detailed B&W maps and diagrams as well as photos of British Museum exhibits. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1988 UT Press soft cover, second printing. Light edgewear at corners with a very very light diagonal crease bottom front cover corner. Content: For over one thousand years between 776 B.C. and A.D. 395, princes, statesmen, and famous athletes gathered every four years at Olympia in western Greece to compete for the olive crowns of the ancient Olympic Games. Judith Swaddling traces the mythological and religious origins of the games and describes the events, religious ceremony, and celebrations that were an essential part of the Olympic festival. The book also features a large, detailed model of the site of ancient Olympia, where, alongside religious and civic buildings, there grew an elaborate sports complex with a stadium for 40,000 spectators, indoor and outdoor training facilities, hot and cold baths, a swimming pool, and a race course. For this revised edition, three new chapters have been added, covering the diet and medical treatment of athletes; sponsorship, patronage, and propaganda; and revivals of the games. Superbly illustrated with vases, sculpture, and other works of ancient art, and with new views of the site. [1 copy available]

THE ARMCHAIR ANGLER
edited by Terry Brykezynski and David Reuther. Great B&W illustrations by Bill Elliot. Condition: NEW 1994 Galahad large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Here are sixty pieces, averaging about six pages each, from the finest fishing writers from Izaak Walton through the present. Hemingway, T.H. White, Zane Gray, de Maupassant, Norman Maclean, Ed Zern, and Charles Dodgson are among the more familiar to the nonfishing audience, but the selections represent a veritable who's who of angling authors. Of course one could quibble: the poetry is insubstantial, and the most space is given to Ted Williams and Roy Blount, Jr. (16 pages each). Those objections notwithstanding, this is an excellent library acquisition. It should be appreciated by literate fishers, and the works from which the selections are taken provide a good library guide for building a fishing literature collection. Great gift book. BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE SEA: Sailing with Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses, the Vikings, and Other Explorers of the Ancient World
by Mauricio Obregon. B&W maps, wind and star charts illustrate. Condition: NEW 2001 Random House small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Content: Obregon takes his reader on a maritime adventure through time, imagining the great explorers and their journeys, from Jason and the Argonauts to early Polynesians to Odysseus and the Vikings. Sweeping in scope, this slim text touches on every aspect of ancient travel by water, offering brief lessons in astronomy, cartography, oceanography, and carpentry. Some of Obregon's attempts to draw connections between extremely diverse and distant cultures through their ocean-faring ways are quite strained, but this book offers several surprisingly provocative and plausible conclusions. Could the Polynesians have traveled to South America? Perhaps, Obregon argues, if they chose to follow extraordinary winds, rather than prevailing ones. The choppy narrative is bound to make some readers figuratively seasick, but many will want to hang on for the ride, as the fascinating history of the sea, its mythic and historical figures, and the boats that changed the world are brought into a fresh and interesting perspective. Dozens of illustrations provide helpful information for the nautically challenged. [Note: To me the question is not whether the Phoencians (or other ancient sailors) could have reached the new world - if the Atlantic was in a good mood, but whether they could have returned home.] Questions welcome. JOE DIMAGGIO: The Hero's Life
by Richard Ben Cramer (Pulitzer Prize Winner). B&W photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2001 Touchstone Trade Paperback, first thus, first printing. Content: In a stunning feat of meticulous reportage, Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ben Cramer ultimately puts to rest the "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" question with iconoclastic bravura. In Cramer's evaluation, the hero America held onto so desperately for so long was really a creation of a nation's communal imagination. The Joe DiMaggio that America tried so hard to believe in was never really here at all. There was, of course, a Joe DiMaggio, and he had a splendid career in Yankee pinstripes--once hitting safely in an unimaginable 56 consecutive games--and a troubled marriage with Marilyn Monroe, each augmenting the other in our national mythology. But myths tend to be skin-deep, and Cramer's biography thrives in an internal geography well below the surface. The map he charts is of a cold, small, often nasty, uncaring, resentful, self-centered man, a man of public grace and private misery who broke friendships, shunned family, and chased money with the same focused energies he once harnessed to run down fly balls. It's not a pretty picture. Scrupulously researched and elegantly written, The Hero's Life is filled with stories and reminiscences, both on and off the field, from others--not surprisingly, DiMaggio offered no cooperation--that both illumine the man and, more fascinatingly, explain our very need for him. Amid all the success and adulation, there was little joy in DiMaggio's life, and few moments--beyond the real heartache he felt over Monroe--of connection with others beyond Joe's personal need for others to serve him. Too bad. I liked having the myth. [1 copy available]

FORWARD MOTION: Horse, Humans, and the Competitive Enterprise
by Holly Menino. Jose Molina Photo (Cover). Condition: NEW 1996 North Point Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition. Content: Menino introduces us here to the arcane sport of show jumping. It is a costly operation that requires constant professional care, perhaps $50,000 a year per horse. Menino points out that while the horses are owned by the very wealthy, most of the top riders come from the middle class; at the peak of their careers, they earn less than top golf or tennis players. She focuses on three leading American rider/trainers and their horses: Lendon Grey, one of the most successful practitioners of dressage, and Last Scene; Keith Taylor and Play Me as they compete in combined training; Anne Kurinski, doyenne of show jumping, with Eros and Dynamite (she trains horses for the Olympics). LAZARUS AND THE HURRICANE & DVD [2 for 1]
by Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton. B&W photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1999 St. Martin's hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Content: In 1979, Lesra, a 16-year-old African American boy from an impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood, befriended three thirtysomething Canadians in the borough on business. The boy, whom the Canadians flew to Toronto to visit them, had led a life so far from the comforts of nature that he stumbled trying to walking on a lawn. Charmed by the exuberant and obviously intelligent Lesra (Lazarus), and aware that without decent health care, a safe environment, or an education he would have little or no hope of success in his dangerous neighborhood, this exceptional group of people invited him to live with and be educated by them. Lesra thrived under their watch--but the story of Lazarus and the Hurricane is only beginning. After finally being taught to read, at age 16, Lesra immerses himself in The Sixteenth Round, the autobiography of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. The African American prizefighter was tried and convicted in 1966 for murders he didn't commit (the book's title refers to his bouts with the legal system as he tries to get himself exonerated). Lesra and his Canadian "family" pursued both a cause and a friendship with Carter that would transform all of their lives. The Canadians are active but not particularly distinct personalities in this book--a group of do-gooders who don't want too much credit. And Lesra, though he is finely described in early chapters, also falls away from the center of the story once Carter comes into view, for the Hurricane is a centrifugal force that cannot be ignored. Widely read and sensitive, but also pleasure-loving and intensely vital, Carter is the reason readers will be unable to forget this story. And they shouldn't. As Carter revives his fight with the support of his new friends and generous lawyers, working through a byzantine maze of court rulings and appeals, the shortcomings of America's legal and prison systems are made painfully clear. The compelling, bittersweet story in Lazarus and the Hurricane should be a call to action. Additional: Written by two Canadians who, despite no formal legal training, joined the legal battle to free Carter, it has the advantage of an unusual inside perspective. Imprisoned in 1967 for the slaying of two white men and a white woman the previous year, Carter had already published a memoir, become a cause celebre and inspired the Bob Dylan song "Hurricane" when Chaiton and Swinton stumbled upon his story in the late 1970s. The 1999 movie was directed by Norman Jewison and starred the great Denzel Washington, Vicellous Reon Shannon, Liev Schreiber, John Hannah, Dan Hedaya, Debbi Morgan, David Paymer, Harris Yulin, and Rod Steiger. GEORGE MALLORY
by David Robertson. Three B&W photo sections. Foreword by Joe Simpson. Condition: NEW 1999 Faber & Faber Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: On 1 May 1999 an American expedition, searching on Everest for the bodies of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine, found Mallory's body on a ledge at approximately 27,000 feet. The climbers carefully buried it, with appropriate ceremony, under large rocks at an undisclosed spot. They continued, without success, their search for Irvine's body and for the vest-pocket Kodak camera that might have yielded evidence that Mallory and Irvine attained the summit. George Mallory's disappearance on Everest in 1924 secured a place for him as one of the accepted heroes of the 20th century: it tended, at the same time, to overshadow the course of his life as a whole and to obscure the shape and complexity of his personality. In this first full biography, David Robertson - who has had access to all the family papers - follows Mallory's life from boyhood in Cheshire and at Winchester, through the years from 1905 to 1909 at Cambridge and the years of school mastering at Charterhouse. Then on to a happy marriage, service in the First World War, and participation in the Everest Expeditions of the Twenties. Two deep devotions - to the spirit of adventure and to his family and personal friends - were the mainsprings of his life. This book, first published in 1969, shows him not only as a mountaineer of extraordinary skill and action. It portraits a man who developed lively interests in the fields of literature, the arts and the main social and political controversies of his day, and one whose circle of friends included some of his most brilliant contemporaries. Above all, it succeeds in conveying Mallory's immense but unselfconscious charm, enhanced by transparent determination to find out what was right - a charm captivating to so many, and so very different people. NEGRO LEAGUES: All-Black Baseball
by Laura Driscoll. Narrated by Emily Brooks. B&W era photos and color illustrations by Tracy Mitchell. Condition: NEW 2002 Grosset & Dunlap hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first edition. Great B&W era photos of the players plus color illustrations by Mitchell. Content: "I love baseball. I know a lot about it. But before last fall, I had never heard of the Negro Leagues," begins Emily Brooks, who, as Driscoll's narrator, relates what she learned in Cooperstown in a report for class. The enthusiastic, clear delivery makes this entry in the Smart about History series a solid choice for middle-graders. Emily takes readers back to the late 1800s when Bud Fowler (credited with inventing shin guards because white players kept spiking him) played on a pro team and then follows the history through the creation of the Negro Leagues in the 1920s to the 1969 election of Satchel Paige to the Baseball Hall of Fame. There's nothing about current black players, but Emily certainly gives kids a clear view of the racism that marked the past and introduces them to a few of the great African American players of their day. The vintage black-and-white photos are fascinating, and the lively artwork keeps to the spirit of the game without trivializing the racial inequity. Grades 3 - 5. [1copy available]

ONLY WITH PASSION: Figure Skating's Most Winning Champion on Competition and Life
by Katarina Witt with E. M. Sweet. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 2005 Public Affairs hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Two-time Olympic figure skating gold medalist Witt offers advice to a young skater (a composite character) on love, career and succeeding as an athlete. Using this platform, Witt discusses her training, competitions and business decisions (including her Playboy layout), and while she claims to discuss her relationships, too, she's quite vague on that front. Despite Swift's help, the writing is stilted and stiff. The glimpses into Witt's life in the Communist former German Democratic Republic are too infrequent; the few tidbits she offers, though, are fascinating. For example, she discovered by reading her Stasi file that the government had arranged for her boyfriend to be stationed in the army far away from her, so as not to distract her from her skating. Witt relates the incident with amusement; she's proud of the GDR and unafraid to defend it. The opinionated Witt deserves credit for being an inspiration to young female athletes and, perhaps, to all young women as they try to get ahead. She's unapologetic in her desire for success, even in sacrificing having a family, which she argues, refreshingly, isn't a sacrifice at all. Athletes, and figure skaters specifically, will most appreciate the lessons Witt shares. [1 copy available]

THE QUEEN OF THE RING: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend (Mildred Burke)
by Jeff Leen. B&W era photo section. Condition: NEW 2009 Atlantic Monthly Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: OK, so it's not the WWE, but it's fascinating history! In this intriguing biography, Leen (Kings of Cocaine) chronicles the life of the queen of the mat, Mildred Burke, women's wrestling champion and pioneer of the sport. Burke (1915–1989), along with her husband and manager, Billy Wolfe, are credited with having invented professional women's wrestling and bringing it to prominence: Her muscles and his mind had made the industry of women's professional wrestling in America. Their rise, fall and resurrection is a story as bizarre and titillating as wrestling's own carnival roots. The king and queen of lady rassling broke barriers despite a ban on women's wrestling in many states. Leen, managing editor for the Washington Post's investigations unit, deftly guides the reader through well-documented and researched accounts, which are culled from Burke's unpublished autobiography, interviews and numerous newspaper records. Leen writes: Her speed and skill made her wrestling a thing of beauty in the ring, full of careful shifts of balance and swift and surprising combinations that turned the straining of muscle and limb into a ballet of grace and power. Flavored with authentic speech and dedicated to accuracy, this biography is the tale of an underdog who triumphed. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE SECRET POWER WITHIN: Zen Solutions to Real Problems
by Chuck Norris. Condition: UNREAD 1996 Little Brown hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Small shelf wear to DJ front fold. Content: Chuck Norris, martial-arts movie hero and television star, offers his thoughts on martial-arts training and the Zen philosophy behind the kicks and punches. In his own life, Norris has found that applying Zen helped him succeed in both business and acting. The discipline and structure of martial-arts training, he argues, can provide one with focus, self-confidence, and determination. Norris peppers his discourse with illustrative anecdotes, such as the story of the wounded marine who--despite the loss of both legs--studied martial arts under a visionary master and learned to use his wheelchair as a weapon. Norris also champions Zen as a path to self-awareness whereby followers learn how to reward, motivate, and respect themselves. One could easily dismiss this book as a superficial presentation of a complex philosophy by a pretentious showbiz dilettante, but that would be an error. View it rather as a primer presented sincerely by a famous practitioner. Norris' fame may help him connect with younger readers, who are often most in need of his message. [1 copy availaable]

ZEN IN THE ART OF ARCHERY
by Eugen Herrigel. Condition: Good + condition, 1971 Vintage paperback. Tiny peeling bottom spine with pale, short crease at hinge, interior clean & tight. Content: So many books have been written about the meditation side of Zen and the everyday, chop wood/carry water side of Zen. But few books have approached Zen the way that most Japanese actually do -- through ritualized arts of discipline and beauty--and perhaps that is why Herrigel's book is still popular so long after it first publication in 1953. Herrigel, a philosophy professor, spent six years studying archery and flower-arranging in Japan, practicing every day, and struggling with foreign notions such as "eyes that hear and ears that see." In a short, pithy narrative, he brings the heart of Zen to perfect clarity--intuition, imitation, practice, practice, practice, then, boom, wondrous spontaneity fusing self and art, mind, body, and spirit. Herrigel writes with an attention to subtle profundity and relates it with a simple artistry that itself carries the signature of Zen. [1 copy available]
