THE ADVENTUES OF TOM THUMB
by Marianna Mayer. Fabulous, colorful illustrations by the great fantasy artists, Kinuko Craft. Condition: UNREAD 2001 SeaStar Books hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Mayer's animated retelling of Tom Thumb's adventures and Craft's affectionate portrayal of the cherubic yet impish hero make for an enjoyable read. n the time of King Arthur, Merlin uses his magic to grant Tim and Kate a son no bigger than Tim's thumb. In spite of the boy's protection by his fairy godmother, Tom Thumb endures a number of mishaps because of his size (he is swallowed three times) but survives to vanquish the fierce giant Gembo from the land. For this King Arthur knights him: "Sir Tom Thumb evermore the smallest and the boldest of the crown's protectors." Craft's renderings of architecture, dress and border art, inspired by 12th-century manuscripts and illustrations, capture both the grand and comic elements of the story. Scenes of a humiliated knight returning to the Round Table with the giant's bites taken out of his sword and shield or of Tom escaping down Gembo's mountainous shoulder will tickle the funny bones of many readers, while the diminutive fellow's reunion with his parents ends the volume on a note of happy recognition. THE AMAZING PAPER CUTTINGS OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
by Beth Wagner Brust. B&W photos-repros of Andersen's work. Condition: NEW 2003 Houghton Mifflin soft cover, 5th printing. Content: As a storyteller, Andersen relied on simple language and dramatic gestures to tap the imagination of his listeners. Sometimes, it seems, he also supplemented his tellings with the making of paper cuttings, a popular craft in the mid-19th century. Brust provides a skeleton biography of Andersen using anecdotal reports of some of the occasions when he employed his handicraft to entertain children, capture a scene during his travels, and even as a sort of universal language when in a foreign country. The more than 20 reproductions demonstrate his imaginative use of materials. While none illustrate any of his stories, many cuttings demonstrate his skill in liberating intricate shapes and in designing complex, interlocking compositions. Nevertheless, the use of "amazing" in the title is a bit of an exaggeration. Rather, the book's value is in showing a little-known facet of the man's personality. The writing is direct and informative and uses quotations from letters and diaries to spice up the simple prose; the chapter on the art of paper cutting is a useful presentation of the technical processes. An unusual book that combines biography and creativity. Grades 6 - 9. [1 copy available]

AMERICAN FAIRY TALES: From Rip Van Winkle to the Rootabaga Stories
compiled by Neil Philip. B&W illustrations by Michael McCurdy. Preface by Alison Lurie. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1996 Hyperian hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. DJ is price-clipped. Content: An impressive collection of 12 stories representing the development of the American fairy tale from 1819 to 1922. Leaving behind the gloomy atmosphere and more formal language of their European counterparts, these literary selections reflect the landscape, egalitarian philosophy, and forward-looking optimism of America. Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" is firmly placed in the Katskill Mountains, while Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Feathertop" is filled with New England superstitions. The contentment of ordinary life is emphasized in Horace E. Scudder's "The Rich Man's Place" and Laura E. Richards's "The Golden Windows." The heroine of Louisa May Alcott's "Rosy's Journey" is solidly self-reliant, and the protagonists in Howard Pyle's "The Apple of Contentment" and Ruth Plumly Thompson's "The Princess Who Could Not Dance" are cheerful and independent. L. Frank Baum's "The Glass Dog" and Carl Sandburg's "How They Broke Away to Go to the Rootabaga Country" portray inventiveness and the pioneer spirit. Sandburg's tale, as well as M.S.B.'s "What They Did Not Do on the Birthday of Jacob Abbott B., Familiarly Called Snibbuggledyboozledom," employ a unique American idiom with their zany words and phrases. Independent readers may find the archaic writing of some of these selections difficult to deal with; others are quite readable. Each story is introduced by information about the author; sources are included. McCurdy's skillfully executed black-and-white woodcuts, both full-page scenes and vignettes, illustrate each tale. This volume provides a rich read-aloud for families who like quality literature, and will also be of interest to children's-literature students and folklorists. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE BEE-MAN OF ORN
by Frank R. Stockton. Color illustration by P. J. Lynch. DVD details Lynch's artistic process in illustrating this book. Condition: NEW 2003 Candlewick large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first U. S. edition, first printing. Free DVD. Content: Stockton's classic story now appears in a large-format picture book with Lynch's dramatic illustrations. The unlikely hero is Bee-man, an old, "ugly, untidy, shriveled, and sun-burnt" figure who is contented with his life as a beekeeper until a young sorcerer informs him that he has been "transformed from something else." Seized with a determination to discover and recover his previous form, the Bee-man goes on a quest that takes him to a stately palace where he learns that noblemen sometimes act ignobly, into a cavern where he rescues a baby from a monstrous dragon, and to a village where he restores the infant to its mother and decides upon his own future. Lynch's spirited artwork, richly detailed and darkly atmospheric, provides a series of imaginative settings and creates a romantic and broadly appealing vision of this original fairy tale. Large in scale and epically cinematic in effect, the beautiful watercolor-and-gouache paintings create a mysterious "otherworld" that will remain part of children's imaginations long after they have graduated to novel-length fantasies. With pictures large enough for sharing with groups, this edition is a read-aloud treasure for good listeners. A DVD giving a behind-the-scenes look at the artist at work is included in the book. BO RABBIT SMART FOR TRUE (Tall Tales from the Gullah)
by Priscilla Jaquith. Illustrated in B&W by Ed Young. Condition: NEW 1995 Philomel hardcover & DJ. Vertical format. Content: The Gullah are probably the most interesting and most mysterious of America's people. Living on small islands off the Southeastern Coast, they speak a dialect that scholars are still trying to pinpoint the origin. This book addresses this issue and the history of the Gullah as well as some of their great "tales." Redesigned with a vertical format (it now opens at the bottom instead of on the right), this edition of a 1981 title features two additional folktales told in the Gullah dialect of South Carolina and Georgia. "Cooter's Wing" explains why the tortoise's shell is cracked and marked, and "Manners for Two" retells the old fable about the fox and the stork who invite each other to dine. Reproduced in darker tones, Young's lively black-and-white drawings are even more effective than in the original volume. A handsome new edition of a notable book of folklore. For children 5 - 8+. Younger children should have the stories read to them.

THE BUNYANS (Book and Cassette)
by Audrey Wood. Illustrated in color by David Shannon. . Condition: UNREAD 1998 Scholastic soft cover, 6th printing. Light edgewear bottom spine. Cassette is narrated by George Irving with music by Richard DeRosa. Content: K- 4. A rollicking original extension of Paul Bunyan's tale. Paul meets a gigantic woman, and he and Carrie are soon married. Two oversize children arrive and play a important role in the formation of many of America's natural wonders: Niagara Falls, Bryce Canyon, and Big Sur, among others. The Rocky Mountains are attributed to Ma Bunyan's efforts to keep the children from wandering off too far, and Old Faithful to her desire for a regular supply of hot water when they camp in Wyoming. Grown up, Little Jean gets restless and leaps up into space. Wood captures the tongue-in-cheek tone and the exaggeration bordering on the ridiculous that characterize American tall tales yet all the while making the Bunyans seem like an all-American family. The story begins in the Victorian era and ends in modern times, which reinforces its absurdity since these natural wonders are not products of recent history. Shannon's realistic, full-color paintings provide a counterpoint to the text, serving to make it seem almost believable. Read & Listen! [1 set available}

CALEB BELDRAGON'S CHRONICLE OF THE THREE COUNTIES
text & beautiful color illustrations by Paul Warren. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1996 Turner Publishing over-sized hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first US edition, first printing. Light shelf wear bottom and top spine. Interior clean & tight. Includes a self bookmark with the Gibblin alphabet. Content: Long oppressed by the ruthless Lord Mulciber, the Gibblins hope to restore their exiled king by finding a legendary stone called the Malbigon. Warren poses a challenge to readers of this book: recover the Malbigon, a magical gemstone, and return it to its rightful place in order to restore peace to a land in turmoil. An elaborately imagined kingdom, once ruled by a good king who was loved and respected by his followers, has been overthrown by his wicked brother, and evil abounds. "First, the Ids. It is true to say that these sour-faced creatures consider themselves superior to everyone else." "Next, the Urgs. These ugly, restless creatures roam the countryside on the lookout for mischief and are best described as a species of goblin whose main attributes are laziness and greed." "Lastly, the Gibblins... They are cheerful and easygoing, sharp-eyed, and nimble-fingered, with a natural affinity for the land." Intricate illustrations of the creatures, the land they inhabit, maps, calendars, and family trees help bring this fascinating mythical place to life. Budding science fiction and fantasy fans will delight in attempting to decode the secret language of the good-natured Gibblins in order to restore peace and usurp the evil ruler. Questions welcome. THE CANDLEWICK BOOK OF BEDTIME STORIES
by Various Authors. Color illustrations. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1995 Candlewick Press hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. No problems, just pre-read. Content: A collection of 17 previously published stories, reprinted with their original illustrations. All are short and suitable for quick reading. Taken individually, the selections are of equally good quality, although no one is outstanding. The problem, as with all such anthologies, is that the disparate formats and styles of illustration are wildly incompatible and result in a cluttered scrapbooklike look. The only thing that unifies the selections is their reassuring, soothing, and usually humorous tone. This volume is more like an encyclopedia of bedtime stories than a treasury. Stories: Horatio's Bed (Camilla Ashforth); A Quiet Night In (Jill Murphy); What Is the Sun (Reeve Lindbergh/Stephen Lambert); Good Night, Lily (Martha Alexander); Tom and Pippo's Day (Helen Oxenbury); The Wish Factry (Chris Riddell); The Park in the Dark (Martin Waddell/Barbara Firth); Ten in the Bed (Penny Dale); Midnight Pillo Fight (jan Ormerod); This is the Bear and the Scary Night (Sarah Hayes/Helen Craig); Bounce Bounce Bounce (Kathy Henderson/Carol Thompson); A Big Day for Little Jack (inga Moore); Can't You Sleep, Little Bear (Martin Wddell/Barbara Firth); Ten out of Bed (Penny Dale); When I'm Big (Debit Gliori); Go To Bed (Virginia Miller); and In the Middle of the NIght (Kathy Henderson/Jennifer Eachus). THE CASTLE OF PICTURES AND OTHER STORIES: A Grandmother's Tales, Volume One
by George Sand. Translated and edited by Holly Erskine Hirko. B&W illustrations and cover art by Mary Warshaw. Condition: NEW 1997 Feminist Press Trade Paperback, fourth printing. Content: A collection of fairy tales Sand wrote for her grandchildren. As products of 19th-century France, the selections are characteristically long, ornate, and didactic. They have been carefully translated for a 20th-century American audience; the long sentences have been broken up and the obscure vocabulary has been made more accessible. Sand's stories include botanical information - not surprising given her love of gardening and flowers - and some moralizing about the proper role of art in the lives of women artists. Obviously, readers' tastes in fairy tales have changed, and adults have become more sophisticated in their expectations about plot and their sense of how children intepret implied, rather than overt, messages and themes. Full-page pencil illustrations appear throughout. This volume will stand as an important contribution in preserving Sand's breadth of accomplishment. [1 copy available]

DEAR MILI
by Wilhelm Grimm. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Wonderful soft illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Condition: UNREAD 1988 Farrar Straus hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, assumed first printing. The DJ has tiny edgewear with light pencil marks - I'm working on that. Content: Preserved in a letter written to a young girl, Mili, in 1816 and not discovered until 1983, the Grimm story is prefaced by a tender address in which he underscores the story's message: although there are many obstacles that can prevent people from being together, "one human heart can go out to another, undeterred by what lies between." The story that follows implies that love transcends even death. Like many fairy tales, this one deals with extraordinary events. A widow sends her child into the forest to protect her from an approaching war. The girl is led by her guardian angel past menacing cliffs and chasms to the house of Saint Joseph with whom she lives for three days. Before she goes back to the village, Saint Joseph gives her a rosebud as a symbol of her return to paradise; when the girl reaches her home, she finds that the three days have been in reality 30 years. "God has granted the widow's last wish" to see her daughter once again. In the morning, mother and child are found dead, with Saint Joseph's rose "in full bloom." Sendak's haunting interpretation of this stark tale is often more emotionally compelling than the story itself. Dear Mili is a variation on the themes of loss, separation and love that Sendak has explored before. In the tradition of 19th century Sunday school literature, the plot and language of the text are often predictable and obviously preachy. For example, after Mili's long journey and prayer, a cleansing rain falls: "God and my heart are weeping together," she says. In an attempt to transcend the limitations of the religious story, Sendak infuses it with images that are both nonsectarian and universal. This is NOT one of those sweet, re-written-by-Disney Grimm fairy tales. Best left for older children although it is clearly intended for early readers. IMHO. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

DRAGON KITES AND DRAGONFLIES
text adapted by and color illustrations by Demi. Condition: Good 1986 Harcourt Brace large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. EX-LIBRARY with all markings. Content: Adapting and illustrating this collection of 22 Chinese nursery rhymes, Demi has turned out a joy-filled labor of love. Her interest in Asia has been apparent in the style of her previous work, and here it's in full blossom. Diminutive black-haired characters scamper across camelback bridges, dance beneath the robes of a dragon, fly kites several times their own size, and sing through the process of silk-making (it begins with the harvest of mulberry leaves for the silk worms). The book will take readers through chants that beg to be sung to the beat of a jump rope, or spoken more gently at day's end. The delicate watercolors show architecture, plants and animals, perhaps of the past, but the nursery rhymes will easily be snapped up by contemporary readers. [1 copy available]

THE EGYPTIAN CINDERELLA
by Shirley Climo. Beautiful & historically accurate color illustrations by Ruth Heller. Condition: NEW 1992 HarperTrophy soft cover, first printing. Content: A stunning combination of fluent prose and exquisitely wrought illustrations. Climo has woven this ancient tale, a mixture of fact and myth, with clarity and eloquence. The beauty of the language is set off to perfection by Heller's arresting full-color illustrations. The story of Rhodopis, a Greek slave girl in ancient Egypt, is an interesting variant of the traditional Cinderella legend. Because of her rosy complexion and fair hair, Rhodopis is scorned and teased by the Egyptian servant girls who work for her kind but disinterested master. Rhodopis' happy fate, becoming the wife of Pharaoh Amasis (570-526 B.C.E., Dynasty XXVI), is accomplished through the intercession of the great falcon, symbol of the god Horus. When the majestic bird deposits one of Rhodopis' rosy-gold slippers, a gift from her master, in the lap of the Pharaoh, he determines this to be a signal from the gods to marry the maiden whose foot it fits. Powerful visual presentations reminiscent of the figures on Egyptian frieze paintings and carvings, colorful birds and animals that pulse with life, and information about Egyptian mythology and civilization are subtly interwoven into the traditional folktale. There is a page dedicated to the history of the "real" Rhodopis at the end of the story. Excellent! Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE EGYPTIAN MYTHS
retold by Jacqueline Morley. Beautiful, powerful color illustrations by Giovanni Caselli. Condition: NEW 1999 MacDonald Young Books (London) hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first impression. Content: A remarkably readable collection of 11 stories based on ancient temple inscriptions, hieroglyphic texts, and tomb paintings. Morley's introduction prepares readers for a journey through Egypt's land of myth. The creation tale of Ra, explanations of the moon's phases and of how mummies came to be, and the story of the first pyramid are just some of the stories included. Details of Egyptian life are carefully woven into the tales without becoming burdensome. The style is engaging, leading readers through deserts and mysterious waters. Each spread is bordered by decoratively painted Egyptian columns; tiny, boxed pictures of people appear at the top of each page. In addition, there is at least one full-color illustration per spread. One minor quibble-the Egyptians on these pages are surprisingly light skinned. Easy reading. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE FORTUNE-TELLERS
by Lloyd Alexander. Vivid, color illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman. Condition: NEW 1994 Dutton hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Content: The hands of fate deftly propel this original folktale. A seedy fortune-teller profits from gullible and sometimes desperate villagers who seek predictions for a rosier future. One unhappy carpenter takes to heart the seer's hardly helpful advice--"Rich you will surely be, on one condition: that you earn large sums of money"--and looks forward to a prosperous life. Most surprising to the craftsman, he ends up in the right place at the right time and the prediction comes true. Alexander's chipper text has a jaunty and infectious "just so" tone. Amazing coincidences fuse the plot elements, but the story's logic remains intact, successfully suspending the reader's disbelief. Hyman's acrylic, ink and crayon illustrations capture the landscape and people of West Africa in vivid detail. Indigenous plants and animals--including comically placed lizards--dot each scene, and the villagers' lushly textured apparel is spectacular. Especially opulent are spreads featuring the fortune-teller's cluttered quarters and the market stalls with their baskets and pottery. Ages 5-8. Questions welcome. [1 copy only]

GIANT BONES
by Peter S. Beagle. Tony DiTerlizza B&W illustrations and cover art. Condition: Gently pre-read, IF at all, 1997 ROC hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first pritning. DJ shows light edgewear top edge. Content: The title story here concerns a modest man who sets off on a perilous journey across high mountains and is rescued from fearsome rock-targs by a race of gentle giants. He lives among them, novel as Gulliver, for 18 years, learning of their curious funeral rite: eating their dead. In the long romance "The Last Song of Sirit Byar," a traveling bard works magic with his songs, saving his last and greatest song to bring an old love back from madness, dying as he sings it. In "The Magician of Karakosk," a country-bumpkin wizard foils an evil queen by leaving out just one step in the incantation he teaches her, so that she turns herself into nothing more than wind. One of these six stories, "Lal and Soukyan," uses characters from The Innkeeper's Song (1993), and all are set in its milieu. Gentle yet biting, far-fetched and altogether common, Beagle's fairy tales invoke comparison with those associated with yet another great name, the Brothers Grimm. [1 copy available]

THE GLASS BIRD
by Enid Richemont. Beautiful cover art & B&W illustrations by Caroline Anstey. Condition: NEW 1993 Candlewick Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first U.S. edition, first printing. Content: When eight-year-old Adam finds a perfect chestnut and wishes for a friend, he doesn't expect his wish to come true. Wishes never do. But this time something wonderful does happen: he finds an amazingly beautiful, live glass bird that seems to need him. Classmates who regularly tease him make fun of the picture of the bird he creates in art class, but he also earns unexpected compliments. Gary even walks home with him. Adam's decision to trust Gary enough to show him the bird is not an easy one, but Adam knows very little about birds, and Gary's father raises them. The bird becomes a secret the boys share, and their friendship extends to school, with Gary including Adam in games and defending him. Both boys are devastated when the bird appears to be dying, but the alien creature tells Adam that it is simply changing, and it soon departs in a burst of fireworks and rocket flare. It leaves Adam behind, but with a new friend and the knowledge that magic does happen. The black-and-white drawings accompanying the text have an old-fashioned look that complements the quiet story. Young readers will understand Adam's fears about making friends and share his delight when he realizes that he can also be a good friend. Ages 9 - 12. [1copy available]

THE GOLDEN BIRD
retold from the Brothers Grimm by Neil Philip. Beautiful, detailed color illustrations by Isabelle Brent. Condition: Gently pre-read 1998 Little, Brown hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first U.S. edition, first printing. No real problems, just pre-read. Tiny shelfwear to book bottom corners. Content: Three princes take turns trying to find out who is stealing golden apples from their father's tree. The eldest and middle ones fall asleep, but the youngest stays awake and sees a golden bird. He shoots an arrow at it, but only dislodges a single feather. The king sends his sons out one at a time to find the bird. The older brothers disregard the advice of a friendly fox and fall under a spell, but the youngest is attentive and escapes the enchantment. The fox continues to help him find the bird, as well as a golden horse and a beautiful princess, even though he demonstrates a consistent inability to follow instructions. After an unpleasant brush with the now disenchanted brothers, the youngest prince and the princess live happily ever after and the fox is restored to human form. Philip is a skillful storyteller with a good ear for pace and rhythm. The narrative is crisp and smooth, without unnecessary embellishments, and serves as a solid foundation for Brent's glowing illustrations. The jewel-toned, beautifully detailed paintings with their patterned borders and gold-leaf highlights are rich but not gaudy. The text is incorporated into the pictures through matching borders on the pages facing the artwork. Another successful collaboration from Philip and Brent that will be a welcome addition to folklore collections. [1 copy available.]

JEREMY: The Tale of an Honest Bunny
by Jan Karon. Wonderful color illustrations by Teri Weidner. Condition: NEW 2000 Viking small hardcover & DJ (I will enclose a mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Blue ribbon place-holder. Perfect. The DJ has a round cut-out through which a color illustration of Jeremy can been seen. I'm sure a mylar jacket could be crafted for this book, but I simply don't have the ability to do it. Content: Part Peter Rabbit, part Velveteen Rabbit, Jeremy is a gentle little tale of a handmade bunny with honesty sewn right in. Lovingly crafted by a young woman in England, Jeremy knows he is destined for America. But rather than be shipped off in a cardboard box, he decides to make the journey himself. With the help of a lonely old man named Mr. Pruneholt, a sea captain and his noisy parrot, and a sweet but slightly barmy old woman called the Village Dear, Jeremy makes his way across the sea and into North Carolina. Along the way he dodges grabby children, a hungry fox, and finds an unlikely friend in an owl. Written as a kind of allegory for a favorite psalm (Psalm 91) of the author's, the tale is also a mini-Odyssey, complete with a sea crossing, beastly obstacles, and the promise of home at the end of the peregrinations. THE LION'S WHISKERS: An Ethiopian Folktale
by Nancy Raines Day. Wonderful warm color illustrations by Ann Grifalconi. Condition: UNREAD 1995 Scholastic hardcvoer & DJ (in mylar jacket), fourth printing. Content: Day retells a folktale of Ethiopia's Amhara people in a readable manner that will appeal to both children and adults. A woman seeking the advice of a medicine man on how to win the love of her young stepson is told that she must pluck three whiskers from the chin of a fierce old lion. As she slowly earns the beast's trust, she learns the way to the boy's heart, as well. Day has elaborated upon the ending of the story as told in Russell Davis and Brent Ashabranner's The Lion's Whiskers (Little, 1959; o.p.), giving more life to the characters. Grifalconi's earth-toned collages provide a perfect window to the tale. Her careful use of plain and patterned papers of various textures, both cut and torn, results in an effective portrait of the desert?its ever-changing sands, oases, dunes, and rock formations. Pieces of fabric, parts of photographs (sometimes just a head, arm, hand, or leg attached to a body made of paper and cloth with face and hair drawn in), and tiny twigs, moss, and other natural materials add both artistic appeal and ethnic veracity. A surefire read-aloud and discussion-starter, accompanied by masterful artistic expression. Questions welcome. [1 copy available.]

MANGABOOM
by Charlotte Pomerantz.. Wonderful color illustrations by Anita Lobel. Condition: Very gently pre-read 1997 Greenwillow large hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first edition, first printing. Content: An original and entertaining story with a traditional fairy-tale flavor. Even before the title page, readers encounter a young lad (Daniel) beholding a rather unusual sight: a very big pink slipper with a bright yellow bow that serves as a tree-house mail box. By the second page of illustration, the boy steps into the shoe, takes the letters in hand, and is hauled up into a mango tree. As the boldly colored paintings indicate, the recipient of the letters is indeed larger than life, a Latino lady giant named Mangaboom who stands 19-feet tall, weighs 600 punds, and is very congenial. She likes to climb trees and skinny-dip and turn cartwheels on the beach. She takes Daniel to tea with her auntie, who wants Mangaboom to meet three eligible suitors; but they believe a woman should do what she's told and stay in the house, and Mangaboom will have none of that. Kids will enjoy the parody of fairy tale traditions and the exuberance of Lobel's watercolor and gouache pictures. Mangaboom is so big and beautiful she is bursting out of the large-size pages with her purple high-heeled shoes, her thick red hair, her flowing flowered dress, and her spectacles. When she does find a man who loves her for herself, he looks a lot like an adult Daniel, and the final scene is an Edenic view of the beach. Questions welcome. [1 copy available.]

MISTER KING (Bratislava Grand Prix Winner)
by Raija Siekkinen. Wonderful color illustrations by Hannu Taina. Translated from the Finnish by Tim Steffa. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1995 Harcourt Brace hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), fourth printing. Intended as a school supplemental book, there is a written note on the inside cover re classroom assignment (2 words). Content: A fairy tale from Finland. A king lives alone in a majestic house with a glass dome. He reads in his library books about other kings, but unlike them, he doesn't have "subjects." His aloneness is immense, and he can only dream of people shouting "hurrah" for their king. One morning a huge, furry talking cat arrives and identifies herself as a "tiger." The king welcomes his first subject and does his best to serve the cat. Gradually, he begins to rediscover his world, seeing everything anew through the cat's eyes. When the king passes a mirror, he says "hurrah" and salutes. Soon another house is built nearby, then a whole town, and all the people salute him as he passes, calling him "Mister King," for that's what he has written on his mailbox. The author's captivating tale thrusts readers' imaginations onto that distant shore where anything can happen. The relative absence of perspective in the artist's exultant watercolors adds to the quaint nature and mystery of Mister King's palace, adding an extra dimension to what the text already offers. Ages 5-9. [1 copy available]

ONCE UPON A TIME: A Treasury of Modern Fairy Tales (Adult & Children's Tales)
edited by Lester Del Rey and Rita Kessler. Beautiful color illustrations by Michael Pangrazio. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Del Rey hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: These stories are hard to categorize - some are appropriate for children and many are for adults. This collection of 10 well written stories nicely illustrates the concept that fairy tale themes are universal, and that modern fantasy writers can give them a sophisticated, psychological and realistic approach while still providing a sense of wonder for all ages. In Barbara Hambly's Changeling, a hard-working Marchlord slays the dragon devastating his countryside and brings home to his wife and children what he finds in its lair: a mute child with two unusual companions. Anne McCaffrey's "The Quest of a Sensible Man" features a prince who seeks a suitable mate for his flying horse. The eponymous "Thistledown" in Susan Dexter's tale is a unicorn colt saved from from predatory hounds by a mute boy suspected of witchcraft. The spoiled princess in "The Fairy Godmother," by Lester del Rey, learns the rudiments of wise rule when she is taken in by an old couple after an attempted abduction. In Wayland Drew's "The Old Soul," an old woman's tale of the fall of a powerful city jolts three travelers out of their self-important lives. Questions welcome. [1copy available]

PETROSINELLA: A Neapolitan Rapunzel
retold & illustrated by Diane Stanley. Soft, lovely color illustrations. Condition: NEW 1997 Puffin soft cover, first printing. Content: Stanley offers a Neapolitan version of Rapunzel that predates the Grimms by 200 years. Petrosinella ("parsley" in Italian) is similar in many ways to the more familiar Grimm tale, but here the women play a more active part in the plot. It is Petrosinella's pregnant mother (not her father) who steals the parsley from the ogress - the event that leads to the girl's imprisonment. Likewise, it is the girl who discovers the secret to her release (three hidden acorns) and who implements the steps that cause the destruction of the enchantress. Stanley's watercolors and colored inks are rendered in royal blues and verdant greens - a fitting backdrop for the young woman and the prince with whom she falls in love, and an effective contrast to the ugly hag. Visual parallels, however, abound; note the folds in the cliffs, the ogress's face, and the bulldog's jowls in the scene with the first acorn. The illustrations have been published before but now Stanley's own narrative spin replaces John Edward Taylor's 1847 translation, used in the book's 1981 publication. Questions welcome. SIR GAWAIN & THE GREEN KNIGHT
retold by Michael Morpurgo. Beautiful color illustrations by Michael Foreman. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 2004 Candlewick Press hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Content: In the vibrant and compelling voice of a storyteller, Morpurgo retells this classic tale. With a lively, page-turning style, he sets the scene as a crude, gigantic stranger rides into King Arthur's hall. Sir Gawain accepts the challenge of the monstrous man and beheads the Green Knight with a single swing of his battle-ax. But then the enchanted knight picks up his severed head and announces that Gawain must, on his honor, meet his dreadful opponent on the next New Year's Day to receive the same blow. Gawain's travels to the Green Chapel at the end of the year, and the temptations he encounters along the way, are the stuff of legend and, like all folklore, are rich in metaphorical meaning about what it means to be human. Morpurgo's sprightly writing brings out all the humor as well as the horror of the original tale, and Foreman's profuse, evocative watercolor-and-pastel illustrations highlight the drama in each scene so that this version can easily be read on two levels–as a rollicking adventure tale or an allegorical saga, depending on the age and inclination of the reader. Morpurgo's version is notable for including every nuance of this complex and compelling tale. Grades 5 - 8+. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SLEEPING BUNNY
retold by Emily Snowell Keller. Stunningly beautiful & detailed color illustrations by Pamela Silin-Palmer. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 2003 Random House hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: This lavishly illustrated version of "Sleeping Beauty" features a straightforward retelling spiced with a few amusing surprises, a cast of animal characters dressed in full medieval regalia, and sumptuous paintings that strike just the right balance between romance and humor. Silin-Palmer once again casts long-legged rabbits dressed in billowing raiment in the starring roles; the gift-giving fairies are winged pigs, while a red-eyed, green-skinned rat takes the role of the excluded vengeful fairy, Mildew. Keller, the illustrator's daughter, alters the traditional plot only slightly. She throws in some groaners (everyone lives "hoppily ever after") but also supplies an imaginative and witty twist at the end. Most of the comic relief comes in the elegantly elaborate paintings, both from the incongruousness of Silin-Palmer's majestically bedecked animals and from the occasional joke (a coat of arms features crossed carrots and bears the inscription "carpe carotae"). The sustained whimsy of the artwork, from the sumptuous settings to the lush floral borders dotted with birds and butterflies, will please readers who like their fairy tales served up with all the trimmings. THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE
text and color illustrations by Inga Moore. Condition: UNREAD c. 1989 Macmillian hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Moore serves up a fresh and thoroughly enchanting version of the timeless story of the sorcerer's overeager helper, Franz, and the mayhem that ensues when he unleashes magic he imperfectly understands. Her telling is brisk and nimble, and her illustrations capture both the mystical and comical aspects of the tale. They offer dizzying views of the castle's turrets and its seemingly bottomless ravine, an unforgettable panorama of the single-minded army of broom-servants which Franz--hair standing on end--has unwittingly created, and many strange and wondrous details. And Franz himself is portrayed engagingly, his irrepressible--and winning--inquisitiveness evident on almost every page. Ages 5-8. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

STORY OF THE CHINESE ZODIAC (Bilingual - Chinese/English)
retold by Monica Chang. Wonderful color illustrations by Arthur Lee. English translation by Rick Charette. Condition: Gently pre-read Yuan-Liou 1991 hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), no printing given. Content: Reviewer: "The book tells the story of a great race which determines which animals get to be part of the Chinese zodiac. A central character in the tale is the Rat, who hatches a cunning plot. The illustrations really make this book special. The pictures appear to be photographs of intricate, beautifully colored paper sculptures. There are some really memorable scenes: the cat and rat lounging together; the majestic Heavenly God consulting with the Earth God; the arrival of the majestic, multicolored dragon; and more. Some scenes are rendered very cleverly; I especially loved an aerial view of the animals running through the trees. Overall, a great book for children (and adults!) who have an interest in myth and folklore, or who just love innovative artwork. Ages 5-8. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
